Knighthood - the title of 'Sir'
2007-06-29 17:06:00
Salman Rushdie, the controversial author, had been knighted earlier this month. This decision had incited protests in some parts of Muslim world but the judges of the Man Booker International Prize have condemned this attack. They have said that the "appalling reaction" has threatened "the principle of freedom of expression as a basic tenet of justice".The concept of knighthood goes back to the Middle Ages. Today the designation of 'Sir' is conferred upon the person who is knighted. The French use the title "Chevalier" and the German "Ritter" .
Salman Rushdie?s Controversial Knighthood
2007-06-24 05:00:00
Raza Rumi The current controversy on Rushdie?s knighthood has several dimensions. Amid the knee-jerk reactions alluding to the grand-conspiracy-against-Islam,- it brings out various layers and levels of literature?s role and position in societies and now in the globalized world. I was once a fan of Rushdie and avidly devoured his books with great admiration. From Grimus to ...
Importance of knighthood & Muslim world's response
2007-06-23 20:47:00
The photograph on the left shows Muslims in Lucknow, registering their protest against knighthood to Salman Rushdie. Is it an attempt to provoke Muslims? And is knighthood important enough for people to get angry. It is an outdated concept. Britain, a former imperial power, is also neither an important nation, nor the honours given by the 'Queen'.Neither it is the Nobel prize nor any honour given by an international platform or organisation like United Nations.Meanwhile, why can't Muslim nations start some really good awards and titles for writers, activists, academicians, scientists and pioneers in other fields, and honour deserving persons both from West and the East, which would be a much better way to tackle such situations. More than 50 Muslim nations, many of them quite rich, but none seems to have an idea about what good PR is. I really don't understand this outrage over the outdated 'Sir', this colonial hangover. yeh angrez maai-baap hain kyaa hamaare!Still, if you are ...

Salman Rushdie knighthood : A provocative move by Britain
2007-06-22 12:08:00
In my opinion Britain's decision to award writer Salman Rushdie a knighthood is provocative move. It has hurt the feelings of the world's 1.5 billion Muslims. Those who had chosen to honor Rushdie - the Indian Muslim author of The Satanic Verses, which many Muslims deemed blasphemous for insulting the Prophet Mohammed and his wives - were either naive and stupid, or had just wanted to provoke Muslims worldwide.Honoring Rushdie came at the wrong time and by the wrong country. It will hurt Britain's national security, interests. and endanger the lives of its citizen.Muslims countries should recall their ambassadors from Britain and ask her to tender an apology.

Salman Rushdie's knighthood will help rally the forces of extremism
2007-06-20 21:09:00
Britain has committed a folly by bestowing knighthood on Salman Rushdie. This folly  will strengthen the hands of Islamic militants and forces of extremism in today's unstable world. It is likely to reignite the frenzy that followed the publication of The Satanic Verses in 1988, Ayatollah Khomeini's subsequent Fatwa against the writer and the celebratory orgy of western self righteousness that ensued in its wake. Across the Muslim world, there have been predictable howls of outrage which, one can only fervently hope, will remain limited to angry protests against a decision deemed spectacularly ill-timed and insensitive.

"Knighthood to Salman Rushdi"
2007-06-20 08:55:00
We as Muslim cannot even think a word of disgrace against any prophet of the Almighty. Reason is we believe that every prophet of God is innocent, pious, example of character for the whole humanity from the creation of the universe upto the Jugdement Day. We believe that each of the prophet was sent by the God to convey His message to the humanity. The role of each of the prophet was to convey His message and to teach the mankind on the lines set by the God. We also believe that all of the prophet carried the same message and teaching, because the only religion sent by the God to the Universe is Islam. From Prophet Adam upto The Last Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) the teachings were the same. Because it started from the first prophet and during transition it took many faces and completed on prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H). Respect of every prophet of God is in our belief. Therefore, we respect The Holy Christ (not to tell the Christians that we respect him), we believe in the inno...

If there's anyone most deserving of knighthood in the UK, it's Salman Rushd
2007-06-19 10:44:00
Unfortunately, Islamofascists worldwide don't think so. Worse, they're using this now as a justification for suicide bombings, and worse: Britain's decision to award Salman Rushdie a knighthood set off a storm of protest in the Islamic world today, with a Pakistani government minister giving warning that it could provide justification for suicide bomb attacks.Rushdie was awarded the title in the Queen's Birthday Honours on Saturday. He has lived under police protection since the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini of Iran pronounced a fatwa (death sentence) on him over alleged blasphemies against Islam in his 1988 novel The Satanic Verses.Today, Pakistan's religious affairs minister suggested that the knighthood was so grave an offence that any Muslim anywhere in the world would be justified in taking violent action."If somebody has to attack by strapping bombs to his body to protect the honour of the Prophet then it is justified," Mr ul-Haq told the National Assembly.I hope the B...
