Is Giraffe Kosher?
2008-06-11 13:12:00
According to a report in the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, vets were asked to treat an adult, female giraffe at Israel’s largest zoo, the Safari Park in Ramat Gan. The team, led by Professor Zohar Amar, took a routine sample of milk and found that it clotted in the way required by Jewish law for kosher certification. They submitted more milk for verification by the rabbinical authorities and the paper reported that a ruling was made that giraffe meat and milk are acceptable for observant Jews. “Indeed, the giraffe is kosher for eating,” Rabbi Shlomo Mahfoud, who accompanied the researchers in their work, said.

Kosher (and Vegan) for Passover

Kosher for Passover Sunscreen

It?s fun to see how people find Sean?s Ramblings through Google and Yahoo searches. While I receive dozens of hits from folks seeking information about plans for Jenna Bush?s wedding or Spider Pig lyrics, here are a few "interesting" referrals:all sunscreens kosher for PassoverAre there non-Kosher for Passover sunscreens? THANK YOU, and a Kosher and Happy Passover

by Akiva at Mystical PathsTHANK YOU !!! You, our dear readers, in responding to our Passover campaign to help the needy in Israel, donated enough to provide 30 families the means to have a family Passover seder this year! You cannot imagine the response as we handed people envelopes (of NIS 500) and their fear of an empty table for the holiday evaporated. Literally, people danced, hugged us, and tried to bestow blessings upon us. We told them it was all from YOU. They could not believe that people from all over the world would care enough to help them. Yet, you did. Kosher for Erev Pesach?
2008-04-15 18:12:00
A public service announcement from Mystical Paths...There's been a very weird kosher for Passover designation found on items in Israel...it reads:Kosher for Passover and Erev (right before) PassoverWhile I've just been scratching my head over this one, Mr. Shaul B. of Beit Shemesh, Israel researched this odd designation and has this to report:The answers I received (as to what this means) were split as follows:1. It means that the product was manufactured before Pesach, so any chometz can be batul b'shishim [nullified by 60] (IOW the designation "Erev Pesach" is lav davka; it just means "made before Pesach"); or2. It means that the product contains no matza, so it may be eaten on Erev Pesach (IOW "Erev Pesach" is davka, and it's specifically to put your mind at rest lest there should be crumbs of matza in your yogurt). Thanks to Phil R. who provided the email address of Rav Vaitman at Tnuva, we now have a definitive answer:Answer number 1: The product was made before Pesach, so y...

Not all pork is not Kosher
2008-04-06 16:28:00
The media loves controversial issues and aside from sex scandals nothing bests Washington corruption in an election year. A group who goes by the acronym CAGW who apparently believed that spelled out words are tremendous waste published last week a book called a "The Congressional Pig Book" reporting on what they call government waste through legislation. CAGW stands for Citizens Against Government Waste. I was not interested at all to learn who are these citizens but I was interested to learn what qualifies as waste for those who like acronyms, so I took the trouble, went to their web site and LQAL (learned quite a lot). The site indicates that to qualify as pork, a project must meet any one of seven criteria that were developed in 1991 by CAGW and the Congressional Porkbusters Coalition. Requested by only one chamber of Congress; Not specifically authorized; Not competitively awarded; Not requested by... Click on the article title to read the full article.

Skittles No Longer Kosher in Europe

Kosher Food Invading 2008 Olympics
2008-02-02 22:56:00
While kosher food is slowly gaining popularity in the US, it ironically is becoming quite trendy in the far east. With the 2008 Olympics being hosted in Beijing, China this year, it looks as if a new restaurant has opened its doors to welcome Jewish and "kosher eating" travelers to feast within its walls.(Israel National News) A new kosher restaurant opened within the past year in the Chinese capital, catering to foreign Jewish residents, tourists, a handful of Muslims and even a few Chinese citizens. Dini's Kosher Restaurant owner Lewis Sperber told the Associated Press this week that he might also set up a second restaurant in the northern section of Beijing, closer to the area in which the Olympic Games will be held. "If people leave the Olympics and want a kosher meal, we could have a place for them," said Sperber. The Games are expected to draw some 55,000 tourists to the city, a potential bonanza for the new kosher start-up.This is good news for Jewish travelers as it will ...

An Attempt to Understand Kosher Certification in Israel

This week, I had the unusual privilege to hear an informal lecture by a true expert, knowledgeable as he is modest, Rabbi Tzvi Liker, a kashrut consultant and a man who is
