Chechen War is Over?
2008-07-06 02:57:00
The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here. The famous Russian neo-Nazi video is on this blog here.Updated July 12:A Norwegian Russophile of unknown motivations came to the blog to comment on the post about the execution of six Russian conscripts. He repeated the usual pro-Russian propaganda about the crazy Chechen War.I don't know about the Norwegians, but the truth is that almost all Greeks, Serbs, Montenegrins and Macedonians will always line up with Russia. I'm not sure about Bulgarians. Also you are going to see this to some extent in Romania, especially in Moldova. It's not so much Pan-Slavism (which doesn't really exist in a rational form), but more Pan-Orthodoxism.For instance, the Poles, Czechs and Ukrainians are all Slavs, but you don't necessarily see pan-Slavism with them. In the Poles, it is almost nonexistent. This is due to the Catholicism of the Poles. In the 20th Century, there were horrible wars waged with Polish Cat...

The gamble of nationalism
2008-05-01 21:20:00
Gambling has never tempted me. The thought of losing money for the slim chance of winning a greater amount fills me with dread, rather than anticipation.I feel the same way about nationalism, because its effects are also unpredictable. It can lead to stirring music, family picnics and fireworks displays or genocide and mass expulsions ? sometimes both. After the United States affirmed Kosovo?s declaration of independence and I saw the Serb hooligans subsequently trashing the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade last month, my first thought was, ?Well, at least they?re not attacking defenseless civilians this time.? I then reflected that I have never known nationalism to make anyone kinder, more just or compassionate. Indeed, far more examples exist of nationalism leading to human rights abuses. But I also wondered what separated the nationalism of Kosovar Albanians from the nationalism of the Serbs, or the nationalism of the Croats who had also committed atrocities for patriotic reasons during t...

On Tuesday, March 18th - exactly one month to the day that President George W. Bush announced that the United States will recognize Kosovo as independent of Serbia - Canada did the same. Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier reported to CBC News that Canada officially recognized Kosovo as a new state. Dusan Batakovic, Serbia's ambassador to Canada, expressed his unhappiness with the decision by calling Belgrade for a consultation. Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper told reporters yesterday that Kosovo's situation is very unique, and unlike the situation in Quebec.

Serb Riot In Kosovo Against UN Forces
2008-03-17 14:22:00
Serbs living in northern areas of Kosovo rioted against western peacekeepers in the worst unrest since the Muslim dominated government of Kosovo declared its independence. UN riot police backed by NATO helicopters and armored vehicles used stun grenades and teargas to restore control of a court-building occpied by Serb activists in the Serb controlled town of Mitrovica. Dozens of people were hurt in explosions and clashes after riot police stormed the building at dawn. Most of Mitrovica’s 40,000 people are Serbs who oppose the Muslim decision to make Kosovo an independent nation and break away from control by Serbia. There is little question the 300 Serbs who took over the court house were being supported by Serbian officials. The protestors raised Serbian flags over the building and indicated they want to remain part of Serbia. Milan Ivanovie, the Serbian leader claimed the Kosovo govenment had ordered NATO forces to drive out the protestors. There is fear Serbia wants to cr...

FINDING JELENA: Albanians and Serbs in Kosovo
2008-03-09 12:32:00
by Jen Marlowe On February 17, Kosovo declared independence. The declaration was unilateral; Belgrade, which ruled the province until NATO air strikes in 1999 brought it under UN administration, refuses to consider anything other than a status of autonomy for Kosovo. Kosovo, Belgrade insists, remains the cradle of the Serbian nation. Modern Serbs still commemorate the 1389 Battle of Kosovo Polje; its key to their sense of national identity. The US recognized the newly declared state; Russia has not. Tensions have erupted once again, though at the moment most of the violence has been directed towards the US Embassy and international troops, it could spill over into new violence between the communities. As Albanians in Kosovo celebrate their new independence, and Serbs in Kosovo pointedly dont, I thought about a bitter cold day I spent criss-crossing Kosovo, trying to track down the whereabouts of Jelena Trajkovic, a Serb in Kosovo. In this search for one young woman, I tast...

Kosovo Independence Cause For Caution, Not Celebration
2008-02-26 15:03:00
The MSM views the creation of a second Muslim state in Europe as a positive development, seeing it as a satisfyingly just conclusion to the suffering inflicted on ethnic Albanians  by Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic, whose repressive measures against the minority culminated in the Srebrenica massacre. Here are a few alternative views about this legacy of the Clinton Administration that President Bush played out to this disastrous result: † The raison d’être of an independent Kosovo – genocide of Muslim Albanians committed by Christian Serbians – is a fiction, insists Pat Buchanan (others go further, maintaining that a “myth of sympathy” has cloaked Kosovo’s Nazi war crimes against Serbs and Jews): In the spring of 1999others , the United States bombed Serbia for 78 days to force its army out of that nation’s cradle province of Kosovo. The Serbs were fighting Albanian separatists of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). And we had no more right to bomb Belg...
Russian FM warns NATO, EU mission not to use force against Serbs in Kosovo
2008-02-25 20:13:00
The Russians seem to be trying to provoke a run on the border between Kosovo and Serbia. Warning the Kosovar Serbs that NATO might block their escape will inevitably increase those seeking to escape. That can only serve a plan to start a guerrilla war. International Herald Tribune Russia's foreign minister claimed in remarks broadcast Monday that NATO and the EU have been considering using force to keep Serbs from leaving Kosovo following its declaration of independence. Sergey Lavrov, in an interview on state-run Vesti-24 television, said that would undermine security in the Balkans and Europe. Lavrov suggested that the EU's police and justice mission was seeking help from NATO forces to ease its deployment in Serb-populated northern Kosovo and to keep Serbs in the region. "We have information that the EU mission, attempting to deploy in Serb enclaves ? and the Serbs do not want this ? is trying to draw the NATO forces for Kosovo onto its side," he said. He added that "th...
Egypt and Kosovo

Unlike to what I expected the Egyptian state did not officially recognized the new independent State of Kosovo despite its support to the cause and the people of Kosovo, I thought that Egypt will immediately declare its recognition following the steps of the United States of America and EU but it did not . Some would say that Egypt is trying not to lose Russia , we still have good relations with the Russians and we are trying to keep balance between the Russians and the Americans as pole of powers..etc. Well it turned out that Egypt is heisted to declare its position from Kosovo for another reason far away from our Russian connections. This reason made respect again the Egypt regime and reconsider its foreign policies and how it still care about our national security , yes Our national security can be affected By Kosovo. Making Sense of Kosovo
2008-02-25 17:55:00
Updated February 26, 2008:Via Joachim Martillo, we have Backgrounder on Kosovo/Kosova.This is one of Martillo's pieces that I am going to support in full.Almost the entire Western Left, and part of the libertarian Right, seems to be opposed to independence for Kosovo. This is a most sorry state of affairs and has a rather shameless history. I am very happy that Martillo has come out in favor in independence for Kosovo, no matter how problematic it may be. I am afraid he did so only because he is a Muslim, but no matter.A background in the Balkan Wars of the 1990's is helpful, if not essential, in understanding the declaration of independence by Kosovo. It is also important to understand where the Workers' World Party, of which Sarah Flounders is a member, is coming from. I don't know a lot about them, but this Wikipedia article is a good primer.WWP is a Trotskyite split dating from 1958. They split from the Socialist Workers Party, a standard Trotskyite group.Their reasons were: ...

Kosovo: Islamism's New Beachhead?
2008-02-25 13:29:00
Julia Gorin - The current state of affairs is a product of a concerted, single-minded, bipartisan American effort to turn Serbs into an enemy as the U.S. tries to make friends of its enemies in the region, always at Serbian expense. “Will Russia now become the leader of the Europeans who resist the Islamization of their continent?” Thomas Landen asks in the Brussels Journal. He notes that Moscow has called on the UN to annul independence, and a UN vote may be the only thing to save us from a new world war over this Balkan province, ignored by the media and public for eight years as insignificant, despite the Balkans’ history for setting off world wars.“Indeed,” continues Landen, “what will Russia do if the 16,000 NATO ‘peacekeeping’ troops in Kosovo attack the Serbian army when it attempts to recover its breakaway province? If Russia intervenes, then 2008 might become the year that war broke out between Russia and NATO. America, the EU, Europe’s immigrant ‘youths...

President George W. Bush announced his support for Kosovo's independence this week, and Condi was on C-Span yesterday defending his decision.

There are some 50 Jews left in Kosovo. Belonging to three families, or clans, they all live in the city of Prizren, a rare gem of ancient architecture amid a landscape devastated by war, poverty and Communist-era concrete."There was not anti-Semitism in the past, but with the Saudi charities here now we are seeing a Wahabi influence for the first time," Demiri said, referring to the fundamentalist Islamic ideology Saudi Arabian clerics have tried to export, with little success, in the Balkans. "I think the newspapers these days are not portraying Jews in such a positive light.""Our spiritual life, like our economic life, is a disaster," Demiri said, pointing to his rotting roof. Sufis of Kosovo and greater Balkan Europe

Congratulations to Kosovo! now the youngest nation on earth. Last 17th February 2008 Kosovo declared its Independence from Serbia. Following the declaration by the Kosovar Assembly several countries such as United States, Turkey, Albania, Austria, Germany, Italy, France, United Kingdom, Australia, etc. announced their recognition. Kosovo is going to be a 2nd Muslim majority European nation after Turkey with more than 90% population are ethnic Albanian.Interestingly the history of Sufism in Balkan region, including that of Kosovo is very rich. The southeastern Europe under nearly six centuries of Ottoman rule brought sufi orders at the heart of Europe with the religion of islam./ Quoted from the article by Huseyin Abiva, A Glimpse at Sufism in the Balkans: Indeed, among the nations that now comprise the Balkans Peninsula (Albania, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia) the visible Muslim component to their populations are readily evident. As w...
