Classic Video: Kris Benson vs. Kosuke Fukudome
2008-05-15 09:16:00 It’s crazy how much things can change in 12 years.. In the summer of 1996 Kris Benson was the first overall pick in the MLB draft and stud pitcher for the U.S. Olympic team, while Kosuke Fukudome was just some over matched 19-year-old. Now, in 2008, Benson’s pitching in the Phillies minor league system while ...

Lou Piniella settles on Chicago Cubs? opening lineup, Kosuke Fukudome stays
2008-03-22 21:57:00 So much for tinkering with the batting order. Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Saturday that Kosuke Fukudome will bat fifth, Alfonso Soriano will remain in the second spot and, barring a trade, the opening day lineup is set. Those comments came a day after the manager said he might try batting the struggling Fukudome ...

2008 Fantasy Baseball Sleepers: Kosuke Fukudome
2008-03-07 00:00:00 As an unknown commodity, Kosuke Fukudome is not getting enough respect in fantasy leagues in my opinion. He's being drafted around the 14th round, but looks like a poor man's Bobby Abreu to me. And Abreu goes in the fourth...

Cubs introduce new right fielder, Kosuke Fukudome (AP)

Kosuke Fukudome Projections
2007-12-12 20:56:00 For all you fantasy geeks out there, I compiled projections from three sources to try to get a read on Kosuke Fukudome will do in his first season with the Cubs. The Cubs care most about his OBP, and the consensus is that it'll be at least .370. His stolen base total will be of interest to fantasy owners, and that's anyone's guess. showad();

Cubs Willing To Offer $50MM For Fukudome?
2007-12-11 17:50:00 UPDATE, 12-11-07 at 10:48am: Just talked to a good source on this stuff. He told me Fukudome wants five years, despite what we've read. The Cubs don't expect he'll sign for $50MM for five years, and are offering that amount over four. They're having an internal debate about stretching it to a five-year, $65MM offer. Jim Hendry wants to stop at four years though. FROM 12-11-07 at 10:03am: Interesting piece of information from Tom Krasovic today - he says the Cubs are willing to offer close to $50MM for Kosuke Fukudome. They really want this guy and have built their offseason plan around him. It's hard to believe the Cubs would offer that amount for three years; that would be $16.6MM annually to someone who's never played in the Majors. I could definitely see the Cubs putting out a four-year, $50MM offer though. Who knows how much validity there is to the idea that Fukudome wants three years and only three years. The Padres have gone at ...

Rangers Like Patterson, Ethier, Hamilton, Fukudome
2007-12-08 03:38:00 According to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan, the Rangers are targeting various young outfielders. Corey Patterson, 28, is a free agent and Scott Boras client. He's looking for multiple years while the Rangers only want to give one. His talent might tantalize somebody, though he hit just .269/.304/.386 this year. He's shown in the past that he can hit like a league average CF and play plus defense, so he could be a bargain. Patterson reversed his platoon split this year, hitting lefties pretty well. He's an Atlanta native; maybe the Braves would be a match. Andre Ethier, 26 in April, is expendable now that the Dodgers have four outfielders. His career line of .295/.357/.464 is solid, though that is average for an AL right fielder. The Dodgers may opt to move Juan Pierre instead, if they can find a taker. The Dodgers previously had interest in Rangers reliever Joaquin Benoit, according to Sullivan. The Rangers would have competition f...

Kosuke Fukudome Still Deciding
2007-12-08 03:10:00 UPDATE, 12-7-07 at 8:08pm: Just listened to Dave Kaplan talking to Fukudome's agent, Joe Urbon, on Sports Central/WGN 720. Urbon says Fukudome may decide whether to play in the U.S. on Monday. The process would move "very quickly" soon after that for Fukudome to decide on a team. UPDATE, 12-7-07 at 8:03pm: Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times spoke to Fukudome's agent. He hasn't decided yet. He will make a choice Monday or Tuesday, and would let the interested Japanese teams know first. FROM 12-7-07 at 2:40pm: In case there was any question, Ken Rosenthal reports that Kosuke Fukudome will announce that he's leaving Japan for an MLB team. Rosenthal says it's down to the Cubs, Padres, and what I like to call a Mystery Team. The Rangers, Giants, and White Sox are candidates. And although Rosenthal doesn't mention them, the Royals could be in the mix. Ken Davidoff reported on Wednesday that Fukudome had narrowed his choices...

Cubs Rumors: Fukudome, Prior, Roberts
2007-12-07 18:48:00 Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago-Sun Times checks in with the latest Cubs buzz. The Cubs, Padres, and White Sox are in on Kosuke Fukudome. It seems that both Chicago teams are willing to spend big bucks. Wittenmyer's source indicates sparse interest in Mark Prior, though the Cubs have been shopping him. The Cubs could still choose to non-tender him on Wednesday rather than pay $3MM+. Seems like a reasonable gamble though. The Orioles want to figure out their plans with Erik Bedard and Miguel Tejada before making a move with Brian Roberts, so talks with the Cubs have cooled. The O's want Sean Gallagher and a outfield prospect, but not Matt Murton. Could 22 year-old Tyler Colvin be involved? Felix Pie is said to be off-limits. Colvin has drawn Steve Finley/Shawn Green comparisons from Baseball America. showad();

Cubs Willing To Pay $12-15MM Per Year For Fukudome?
2007-12-07 02:41:00 UPDATE, 12-6-07 at 7:39pm: Sandy Alderson was on 1090 AM XX Sports Radio tonight. He said the Padres gave Fukudome one of the top two or three offers the team ever proposed. An answer from Fukudome is expected tonight or tomorrow. FROM 12-6-07 at 2:23pm: According to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune, it "sounds like the Cubs might go as high as $12-15MM per year" for outfielder Kosuke Fukudome. He adds that Fukudome would have to be willing to take less money to play on the West Coast if he is to become a Padre. Many players have before, so don't go buying those Fukudome Cubs jerseys just yet. Krasovic also has a note on Andruw Jones. Apparently the only other concrete offer outside of the Dodgers was a two-year, $22MM one from the Royals. showad();

Kosuke Fukudome Rumors: Wednesday
2007-12-06 00:10:00 UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 5:09pm: In a Baseball Prospectus chat today, Will Carroll said "Fukudome will decide today. Someone made a big offer." By that, Carroll means Fukudome will sign today. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 1:17pm: Jon Heyman suggests the Red Sox could get involved on Fukudome. Where to put him? FROM 12-5-07 at 8:43am: Let's start a thread just for Kosuke Fukudome. The prevailing sentiment is that the Cubs are the frontrunners for his services. Cubs Rumors: Fukudome, Prior
2007-12-04 19:21:00 UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 12:20pm: Some new stuff from ESPN Radio 1000's Bruce Levine. The Cubs have talked to the Royals about Mark Teahen; the Royals like Matt Murton. Levine says there's nothing to the Hamiton rumors. FROM 12-4-07 at 12:11pm: Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times discusses the rumors around the Cubs. Wittenmyer implies that Kosuke Fukudome could get a deal similar to Torii Hunter's - five years, $90MM. That's not in line with what's been said so far, plus Fukudome has said he wants three years and not more. The Padres are the frontrunner to acquire Mark Prior, but Dusty Baker's Reds are also interested. The Reds idea first surfaced here. The Padres, though, have made many deals with the Cubs over the past few years as Jim Hendry and Kevin Towers work well together. showad();

Rios For Franklin Gutierrez and Cliff Lee?
2007-12-04 17:03:00 UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 10:03am: Per Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun: no match for the Indians and Jays on Rios. I knew Gutierrez/Lee didn't sound right. FROM 12-4-07 at 9:46am: Joel Sherman has a new column up with some fresh rumors. The Indians and Blue Jays are reportedly talking about a swap that would send Alex Rios to the Tribe for Franklin Gutierrez and Cliff Lee. Seriously? That seems like a lousy deal for the Jays. How long until a debunking on this one? The Jake Peavy signing is a cause for optimism as the Indians seek to re-sign C.C. Sabathia. As you know, the Cubs are all about getting a left-handed hitting right fielder, and Kosuke Fukudome is the best available. Adam Dunn was also on their radar (in right field??) but those talks died. Sherman says if the Cubs don't get Fukudome they could move on to Johnny Damon (in right field??). showad();

Carl Crawford Not Available
2007-12-03 05:08:00 Not a huge surprise, since Carl Crawford's availability was questionable in the first place. But Dave van Dyck of the Chicago Tribune affirms that Crawford can't be had now that the Rays have dealt Delmon Young. The Cubs' focus remains a left-handed hitting outfielder. Their top priority is Kosuke Fukudome, who is very likely to try his hand at MLB. Who else might the Cubs consider? Reasonable options in my estimation include Raul Ibanez, Ryan Church, Milton Bradley, Randy Winn, Gary Matthews Jr., Luke Scott, Geoff Jenkins, David Dellucci, and Shawn Green. showad();

White Sox Looking At Fukudome, Bay
2007-11-30 15:34:00 According to Ken Rosenthal, the White Sox have cooled on Aaron Rowand as they do not want to give him a five-year contract. Instead, they've set their sights on Kosuke Fukudome and Jason Bay. This isn't the first time they've been linked to Fukudome; Dan Graziano noted back in August that the Sox had scouted him. The White Sox could entertain using Fukudome in any of the three outfield positions. He could easily handle left field if Joe Crede is traded and Josh Fields plays third. He could probably get by in center. And he's probably better than Jermaine Dye in right, so maybe it would be Dye switching to left. New Pirates GM Neal Huntington perhaps hasn't made an impression on the team's fans yet. A Bay trade this winter will be big for him in terms of PR. It'd be a sell-low move, however. I do think the White Sox could throw something together to make it work. Meanwhile Mark Gonzales says the Sox still like Coco Crisp as a cen...

Kosuke Fukudome Update
2007-11-28 05:03:00 The Hanshin Tigers offered free agent outfielder Kosuke Fukudome roughly $18.5MM over four years. They've now withdrawn their offer, leaving the Yomiuri Giants as his only Japanese suitor. I'm assuming that means Fukudome's former team, the Chunichi Dragons, is also out of the running. (By the way, the Hanshin Tigers have switched their attention to signing Lew Ford). Fukudome should make at least $30MM over three years in the United States. The Rangers, Mets, Cubs, Giants, White Sox, and Padres may all have interest. showad();

Rangers Rumors
2007-11-25 21:29:00 T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com has some Rangers notes. Of course, much of it revolves around the outfield, since they missed out on Torii Hunter. On that front, they're exploring Kosuke Fukudome, who is reportedly seeking three years and $30 million. Add the Rangers to the Cubs, the Phillies, the Yomiuri Giants and his former team, the Chunichi Dragons. I would toss the Nats and possibly the Twins in that group, and there are probably other teams where Fukudome would fit. The Rangers have a level of interest in both Aaron Rowand and Andruw Jones, but not nearly to the level that they were interested in Hunter. They won't go five years at $75 million for Rowand like they did Hunter, and are concerned with Jones's 2007 drop-off. Mike Cameron is also mentioned, but Jon Daniels has said that "we would like to find a long-term fit for us." Cameron would be little more than a stopgap. Jose Guillen is also mentioned, though there is little elaboration. I'd bet that many teams are going to w...

Molony's Latest: Glavine, Fukudome, Percival
2007-11-12 23:45:00 MLB.com's Jim Molony has a new column up with some solid info. Molony says Tom Glavine will wait about a week and then announce he'll pitch for the Braves in '08. It would probably be for $8-9MM for '08 with a mutual option for '09. Molony suggests that the Phillies might go after Kosuke Fukudome, or lesser options like Brad Wilkerson or Trot Nixon. Eight teams are after Troy Percival, four of which consider him an option at closer. The Tigers aren't involved as of yet. Maybe the Cubs are in the mix? Also a reader just emailed me to tell me that 790 The Sports Animal in Houston says the Astros are in on Percival. showad();

Rangers Rumors: Kinsler, Laird, Padilla
2007-11-08 20:15:00 Here's the latest hot stove buzz surrounding the Rangers. The team will try again to lock up second baseman Ian Kinsler long-term. It would be a five-year deal, buying out one year of free agency. Kinsler had an inconsistent 2007. He hit .298/.375/.667 with 9 HR in April and .256/.351/.393 thereafter. Nice to see him draw 62 walks though. Jon Daniels has had several teams ask him about Gerald Laird and Hank Blalock. He's not likely to sell low on Blalock. But Laird is getting more costly and the Rangers want to use Jarrod Saltalamacchia full-time behind the plate. He's only 28 - young in catcher years - and has a cannon for an arm. And while he didn't hit much in '07, he's shown flashes of potential. The Red Sox have checked in on him. Daniels admitted publicly admitted that he's open to trading Vicente Padilla. Might as well not hide it. This could be a fine buy-low opportunity for some team, if they can keep ...

Fukudome Receives Two Offers From Chunichi Dragons
2007-11-06 03:59:00 We have to consider the possibility that Kosuke Fukudome will remain in Japan. He's not committed to MLB in any way. In fact, he recently received two offers from his current team, the Chunichi Dragons. One was a one-year deal, and the other a multiyear deal. Fukudome said that he will think about these offers carefully over the next week and would like to receive offers from other teams for comparison. Don't expect any kind of official decision on whether he'll stay in Japan until next week. If Fukudome does stay in Japan, Jose Guillen probably becomes the best available free agent right fielder. showad();

Fukudome, Kuroda, Kobayashi Rumors
2007-11-04 04:59:00 Here's a link chock full of rumors involving Japanese ballplayers who might come over to MLB. It's also loaded with links most of you will not be able to read. Masahide Kobayashi, the 33 year-old righthanded closer, will be represented by SFX. Fellow free agents Kerry Wood and Jorge Julio are also using that agency, as far as I can tell. Hiroki Kuroda is expected to fill for free agency on Monday. Since there's no posting fee involved, some have speculated his salary could exceed Daisuke Matsuzaka's. Matsuzaka will earn an average of $8.66MM per season during his six-year deal, and he also has a full no-trade clause. The idea of Kuroda earning around $10MM per year jives with earlier remarks from Jason Churchill of Prospect Insider. The deadline to fill for free agency in Japan is November 12th. Kosuke Fukudome is still undecided about whether to jump over to MLB. He'll meet with his current team, the Chunichi Dragons, on Monday. ...

Cubs Targeting A Right Fielder
2007-10-30 20:51:00 According to Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald, the Cubs have a lefthanded-hitting right fielder with power atop their offseason wish list. The name that comes to mind: Kosuke Fukudome. Is it possible that Fukudome gets lost in the winter shuffle a bit and becomes a mild bargain? Something like three years, $30MM? Problem is that if he's only going to be a 15 HR guy, he needs to compensate for that by playing strong defense and posting a .380 OBP. In terms of left-handed hitting right fielders with power, the Cubs could also consider Luke Scott, Ken Griffey Jr., and maybe Bobby Abreu if the Yanks cut him loose. The first two would involve intra-division trades though. Hopefully the Cubs don't go for Shawn Green. The Cubs could double-dip in the Japanese market, as Miles says they'll look to add starting pitching depth. Hiroki Kuroda has been the starter connected to the Cubs thus far this offseason. Miles adds that Jim Hendry is satisfied with Ry...

Giants Interested In Kosuke Fukudome
2007-10-26 20:21:00 According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants are "seriously interested" in Kosuke Fukudome. The Padres will be in on him as well. Shea picked up this chatter from Japanese media at the World Series. McCovey Chronicles is cautiously intrigued, but only around a 3/24 level. Mike Plugh has speculated that Fukudome could cost $12-15MM over three or four years, but that was written in May. Fukudome saw his power production decline and finished the year with elbow surgery. Still, .294/.443/.520 is a great baseline even if it translates to 15 HR power. This isn't the first time the Giants have been linked to Fukudome. Susan Slusser mentioned the possibility in early September. Other teams said to be in the mix: the Red Sox, Yankees, Cubs, White Sox, and Padres. I'm sure that list will continue to grow. Perhaps the Yanks will exit the picture since they plan to exercise Bobby Abreu's option.

The Unknown: Kosuke Fukudome
2007-10-10 20:00:00 While many Cubs fans ponder adding names like Abreu, A-Rod, Dunn, Rivera, Eckstein, Clement, etc., there is one name that has sparsely been mentioned, though he could be one of the more sought-after free agents this offseason. Kosuke Fukudome. The last name is pronounced "Foo-koo-doh-may," though I've read he wants to be like Ichiro and go solely by his first name, prounounced "Koh-skay." And after nine years in the Nippon League with the Chunichi Dragons, Fuku will become a free agent in August, and even better, there will be no ridiculous posting fee like the Dice-K saga last year. So, who the Fukudome is this guy? Well, the lefty is a career .305 hitter with 192 HR and 647 RBI. Came up as an infielder, but has played right field since 2001 (Hello!). Dome really broke out in 2005 and 2006 with the following lines: 2005-142 G, .328 AVG, .590 SLG, .430 OBP, 28 HR, 103 RBI, 13 SB, 169 H, 102 R 2006-130 G, .351 AVG, .653 SLG, .438 OBP, 31 HR, 104 RBI, 11 SB, 174 H, 117 R (he wa...
Padres To Push For Fukudome?
2007-10-09 04:50:00 One National League exec has indicated to a source of mine that the Padres plan to go hard for Kosuke Fukudome. Apparently, Kevin Towers nearly signed him out of high school as a shortstop. We've heard Fukudome mentioned mainly as a right fielder, but the Friars have Brian Giles signed through 2008. Perhaps they'd try him in center field for one year, where he'd probably be adequate at best. Fukudome is currently recovering from endoscopic elbow surgery, but he should be ready for spring. Previously we've seen the White Sox, Giants, Red Sox, Cubs, and Yankees linked to Fukudome at varying levels of speculation.

Kosuke Fukudome Targeted By White Sox, Giants?
2007-09-09 18:07:00 We've begun the Kosuke Fukudome Watch early here at MLBTR. A lot of good info was revealed in our May 2nd interview with Mike Plugh. A few months later Plugh wrote a more in-depth article about Fukudome at Baseball Prospectus. Fukudome will be a free agent this winter and doesn't require a posting fee. The current estimate is $12-15MM annually over three or four seasons. He's currently recovering from elbow surgery but will be ready by spring. There has been some confusion regarding Fukudome's position. While many have referred to him as a center fielder, Plugh told us he's best in right field. Plugh said Fukudome could handle center but his defense would be questionable there. A return to the infield seems highly unlikely. Fukudome's position is an important question when it comes to the White Sox. They've got Jermaine Dye locked in at right field, and there's no where else for him to go. They also want to try Josh...

Graziano's Latest: Andruw, Dunn, Fukudome
2007-08-12 18:04:00 Dan Graziano has a new article up regarding the free agent outfielder crop. He spoke to two anonymous GMs. Let's take a look at some highlights. Andruw Jones has an awful .216/.312/.418 line this year. He's been outdone by Shawn Green, Sammy Sosa, Jose Vidro, and Shannon Stewart in terms of OPS. Nonetheless, Jones isn't expected to come at a discount. Scott Boras will just play up the defense, the RBIs, the career totals, whatever. Graziano says "it's hard to see" the Reds picking up Adam Dunn's $13MM option. This would just be plain dumb on Wayne Krivsky's part. Given the $0.5MM buyout, it's basically like signing Dunn to a one-year, $12.5MM deal. How many teams would pass on a huge power bat on a no-risk one-year commitment? If the Reds don't exercise the option, it will be change for change's sake. And a bad decision. Kosuke Fukudome is the dark horse, a possible impact right fielder from Japan....

Red Sox Eyeing Kosuke Fukudome?
2007-04-29 18:31:00 Kosume Fukudome is a 30 year-old outfielder currently playing for the Chunichi Dragons. Mike Plugh praises his doubles power and has described him as an on-base machine with a rifle arm on defense. He may compare to Hideki Matsui in some ways. Should Fukudome come over to the Majors after this season, it won't involve the posting process. He'll be a free agent. According to injury guru and occasional rumormonger Will Carroll (subscription required), the Red Sox already have their eye on Fukudome. Carroll doesn't expect the Sox to acquire a long-term outfielder like Rocco Baldelli this summer because of their interest in Fukudome. I will have to find out if Fukudome could play a credible center field or return to third base. Otherwise, such a signing would only seem to make sense for Boston if they moved Manny Ramirez. They don't seem likely to try J.D. Drew as the regular CF.
