No dijo nada.

When the Kremlin Tried a Little Openness
2008-05-18 23:18:00
Still, it is worth recalling a time when a little openness flew out of control. As a correspondent and bureau chief for The New York Times in Moscow in the late 1980s, I had a ringside seat to observe the slow disintegration of the Soviet Union under Mr. Gorbachev. The collapse of the Soviet empire and ...

But Pavel Felgenhauer, the defense correspondent at “Novaya gazeta” newspaper, says for most of the 4 million people currently employed by the armed forces, little has changed for the better. “A lot of money was supplied, but no ...

The New Cold War: How the Kremlin Menaces Both Russia and the West

No enemy is too small. In an eye-opening passage, Lucas chronicles how the Russian state has crushed aspirations towards a cultural renaissance among the tiny 600,000 Mari people in central Russia, apparently for getting too close to Estonia. He warns us in particular on the issue of gas, Russia?s main export to the rest of ...

The Kremlin Wises Up

Now, it seems, the Kremlin has learned its lesson. Vladimir Putin’s latest power plays demonstrate greater subtlety, and his new tactics-trading gas supplies and international diplomatic backing for loyalty-are proving more effective. Last week, for example, he traveled to Sofia to clinch a deal that will see a major new gas pipeline built through Bulgaria ...
Communist leader demands Kremlin ensure fair election
2008-01-26 13:51:00
By Guy Faulconbridge MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's Communist Party leader on Saturday called on the Kremlin to ensure a fair election and said President Vladimir Putin's chosen candidate was dominating air time on state television. Veteran Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov is the main opposition contender to Putin's favourite, Dmitry Medvedev, who is set to win a sweeping victory in the March 2 election. Zyuganov said Russia's main television stations, which are mostly dominated by the state, were giving too much air time to Medvedev and not enough time to discussion with other parties. But he dismissed speculation that he would pull out of the elections, a move that could leave Medvedev competing against a firebrand nationalist and another obscure candidate. "I will go to the end," Zyuganov told reporters at a party rally in Moscow. "There are forces that are trying to undermine the election campaign and push it into a dead end." "We have warn...

Kremlin Wants to Control the Blogosphere
2007-11-01 10:25:00
Don?t worry, if you are not living in Russia you have nothing to worry about, but for all of the Russians out there it might be bad news. The information came from Washington Post, so if you are interested read it for yourself from the source, but as a blogger I just want to say that I strongly believe in the right of free speech and I think that Kremlin?s behavior is unacceptable. I think that free media is very important and that other bloggers will agree with me as well. At the moment there is talk of creating a new Russian computer network - one that would be separate from the Internet at large and, potentially, much easier for the authorities to control. Well I hope that it doesn?t happen.

Kremlin faithful prepare for second coming of President Putin
2007-10-09 00:21:00
A SHADOWY group of Kremlin insiders is urging President Vladimir Putin to return to his post just one year after he steps down in March, when his second and supposedly final term ends. The siloviki, as the group of former KGB officers is known, want Putin to serve as president for at least another eight years and possibly until 2023. The constitution blocks anyone from serving more than two consecutive terms. Last week Putin took some of his closest aides by surprise when he hinted that he might become prime minister. According to the siloviki plan, he would come back as president after a short stint as prime minister. This would not require a change to the constitution because there would a brief interval between his second and third terms. Once back in the Kremlin, Putin would be legally entitled to serve two more four-year terms. “For more than two years the assumption was that Putin would bow out of Russian politics for good when his tenure ends in the spring. Now there’s be...
