(This story kind of takes a bit of the sting out of this post ? a bit, anyway.)The ?E&P Pub? of Editor and Publisher Online tells us here that parody copies of the New York Times were distributed all over the place today, including in ?The Big Apple? (in the spirit of this, of course). However, in a nod to reality, the work of Ben Stein was reproduced word for word (more here).

Well look who landed at the Weekly Standard: Obama Reinforces McCain Campaign Talking Points The campaign should really start sending out carbon-offset and organic soap gift baskets because every time a Democrat talks, things seem to get a little brighter for them. Earlier this week, it was Joe Biden admitting Hillary might have been a better VP pick than him. Today, it’s Obama denigrating his all-talk service in the Senate so others don’t have to. Here he is responding to a reporter question about whether Dems have belittled small-town mayors in going after Palin’s service: “We’ve had an awful lot of small town mayors at the Democratic Convention, I assure you,” Obama said. “I meet them all the time. The mayors have some of the toughest jobs in the country because that’s where the rubber hits the road. You know, we yak in the Senate. They actually have to fill potholes and trim trees and make sure the garbage is taken away.” Pos...

?Supporting The Troops? On Kristol Mess Monday
2008-06-23 10:42:00
The New York Times conservative quota hire columnist attacks the ?Not Alex? MoveOn ad below (from here)? The ad is simple. A mother speaks as she holds her baby boy:?Hi, John McCain. This is Alex. And he?s my first. So far his talents include trying any new food and chasing after our dog. That, and making my heart pound every time I look at him. And so, John McCain, when you say you would stay in Iraq for 100 years, were you counting on Alex? Because if you were, you can?t have him.?Take that, warmonger!?The MoveOn ad is unapologetic in its selfishness, and barely disguised in its disdain for those who have chosen to serve ? and its contempt for those parents who might be proud of sons and daughters who are serving. The ad boldly embraces a vision of a selfish and infantilized America, suggesting that military service and sacrifice are unnecessary and deplorable relics of the past.If that were true about MoveOn, then I would hardly think they?d enjoy the popularity that they do among...

Weekly Standard Editor: President Bush Will Attack Iran Without Authorization From Congress If Barack Obama Begins To Smoke Señor Panama John McCain In The Polls Well, to be honest, Bill Kristol didn’t exactly admit the fact that should President “Surge” W. Bush choose to attack Iran at his own discretion minus the (so-called) “New Democratic” Congress’ consent, it would be yet another felony; perhaps even prosecutable as a “war crime”. Not a “small fact”, that one, by the way. Yep, good ole’ “Billy Boy” just skipped over that part; just hinted that his fellow neoconservative pals in the White House might just be prone to asserting those “Kingly Executive” powers to wage a war against Iran if it were to look “bad” for the ONLY Panamanian-born U.S. Senator and/or presidential “wannabe” in the history of the United States of America — Señor McCain. (Pushing it with that pic, I know?).The New York Times? conservative quota hire columnist tried to spin a scenario whereby, even if congressional Repugs get trounced in the fall, that ?straight-talking maverick? could still win the presidential election (here). There is probably much more right-wing mythology that could be exploded in this drivel, but here are three obvious points? The crucial swing states of Ohio and Pennsylvania (whose primaries Obama also lost to Hillary Clinton) have a fair number of West Virginia-type working-class, culturally conservative voters. The Obama campaign can?t be confident about his prospects there in the fall.Yeah, I know Kristol and his ilk are going to be perpetually spinning this tale of how Obama supposedly can?t win white, working-class voters (I would argue that, yes, that?s true for a small percentage, but overwhelmingly not as a group), but funny thing; this Quinnipiac University poll taken on May 1st shows Obama losing by a single percentage...

Today's "Kristol Mess" Moment
2008-04-28 19:39:00
The New York Times’ quota hire opines as follows on Barack Obama today (from here)…On Friday in Indiana, Obama talked tough in response to a question: “I get pretty fed up with people questioning my patriotism.” And, he continued, “I am happy to have that debate with them any place, anytime.” He’s happy to have fantasy debates with unnamed people who are allegedly challenging his patriotism. But he’s not willing to have a real debate with the real person he’s competing against for the nomination. From here, dated last February (God, this was easy)…But Obama chose to present his flag-pin removal as a principled gesture. "You know, the truth is that right after 9/11, I had a pin. Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we’re talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security, I decided I won’t wear that pin on my chest."Leave aside the claim that "s...

Buchanan, Kristol, Hannity and those ungrateful negroes: a banner month in
2008-03-25 16:50:00
I guess there’s probably nothing Earth-shattering about revelations that FOX News “journalist” Sean Hannity was BFFs with a white supremacist. I mean, even if you don’t expect it, it’s not the sort of information that’s going to turn your whole worldview upside-down, you know? But the latest screed from Pat Buchanan almost buckles the knees. We don’t exactly look to Pat for enlightened thinking on race or, well, on anything. But even by his standards these March 21 comments are barely to be believed. Barack says we need to have a conversation about race in America. Fair enough. But this time, it has to be a two-way conversation. White America needs to be heard from, not just lectured to. This time, the Silent Majority needs to have its convictions, grievances and demands heard. And among them are these: First, America has been the best country on earth for black folks. It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships...

2008-03-20 19:57:00
by Walter C. Uhler Below is the letter I just sent to Bill Keller, Managing Editor of the New York Times. I was especially influenced by David Bromwich's conclusion that the Times consistently has attempted to "shift legitimate opinion toward acceptance of a large and permanent American force in the Middle East." Dear Mr. Keller: I was one of the individuals who canceled my [sic] subscription (of more than thirty years), when the Times decided to hire William Kristol as a columnist. Not a dime of my money will go to the Times as long as it pays that scoundrel, who I call the "effete warmonger," to write his neocon trash. But I take great delight in the knowledge that the effete warmonger committed an egregious error in his Times' column today, an "error" reminiscent of those committed by Jayson Blair. While waxing accusatory about Barack Obama, the Times' effete warmonger incorrectly placed Senator Obama in Reverend Wright's church on July ...

Well, we now understand why William Kristol got hired at the leftist rag, called the New York Times He seems willing to tow their party line… and their endorsements. This is an important moment for the conservative movement. Not because conservatives have some sort of obligation to fall in behind John McCain. They don’t. Those conservatives who can’t abide McCain are free to rally around Mitt Romney. And if McCain does prevail for the nomination, conservatives are free to sit out the election. But I’d say this to them: When the primaries are over, if McCain has won the day, don’t sulk and don’t sit it out. Don’t pretend there’s no difference between a candidate who’s committed to winning in Iraq and a Democratic nominee who embraces defeat. Don’t tell us that it doesn’t matter if the next president voted to confirm John Roberts and Samuel Alito for the Supreme Court, or opposed them. Don’t close your eyes to t...

Bill Kristol is now an editorialist for The New York Times. While this may be the greatest business decision by the Times in the last decade, it still demonstrates how one-sided the Times? is. The only way to describe the Times is that its staff appears to write articles and editorials for themselves rather than the people actually reading the paper. Bill Kristol: President Mike Huckabee?
2008-01-07 17:10:00
Thank you, Senator Obama. You?ve defeated Senator Clinton in Iowa. It looks as if you?re about to beat her in New Hampshire. There will be no Clinton Restoration. A nation turns its grateful eyes to you. But gratitude for sparing us a third Clinton term only goes so far. Who, inquiring minds want to know, is going to spare us a first Obama term? After all, for all his ability and charm, Barack Obama is still a liberal Democrat. Some of us would much prefer a non-liberal and non-Democratic administration. We don?t want to increase the scope of the nanny state, we don?t want to undo the good done by the appointments of John Roberts and Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court, and we really don?t want to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory in Iraq. For me, therefore, the most interesting moment in Saturday night?s Republican debate at St. Anselm College was when the candidates were asked what arguments they would make if they found themselves running against Obama in the general elec...

The NY Times Hires Bill Kristol And The Left Goes Wild

2007-12-31 20:33:00
by Walter C. Uhler It was an offhand remark, in 1971, by a Penn State professor to his political science students, that prompted me to become a devoted reader, then decades-long subscriber, to the New York Times: "If you don't read the New York Times, you can't begin to know what's occurring in the U.S. and the world." Over the years, I found overwhelming evidence — much of it amusing and delightful — to support his claim, even as I suppressed my suspicions that the "Old Grey Lady" was pimping for a muscular U.S. presence around the world. For years I lived with the conceit that sophisticated people spent much of their weekend mornings reading Sunday's Times But, my-oh-my, how "Times" have changed! First, copy-cat journalism by Times' "wannabes" undermined the paper's claim to be the "paper of record." Subsequently, that reputation was further eroded - as was the general appeal of newspapers - by the emergenc...

Recently the Puffington Post published this item: The Huffington Post has learned that, in a move bound to create controversy, the New York Times is set to announce that Bill Kristol will become a weekly columnist in 2008. Kristol, a prominent neo-conservative who recently departed Time magazine in what was reported as a “mutual” decision, has close ties to the White House and is a well-known proponent of the war in Iraq. Kristol also is a regular contributor to Fox News’ Special Report with Brit Hume. Judging by the reaction in the Leftosphere, you’d have thought that Pinch Sutzberger just announced higher subscription rates for women, children and subscribers of color. The alternate universe of Bill Kristol
2007-11-13 05:59:00
Just how strange is the alternate universe of Bill Kristol? He thinks that Joe Lieberman as the Vice Presidential Candidate would save the Republicans is 2008. Eunomia explains just how idiotic this is. What Kristol proposes is that nominating Lieberman would create the conditions for such a massive victory for the Republicans, when the woes of the latter are closely tied to the foreign policy decisions that constitute the chief reason why Kristol admires Lieberman and thinks he should be a VP nominee. In short, the very things that make Lieberman attractive to interventionists in the GOP are the things that make the rest of us want to run screaming from the room. Adding Lieberman to a ticket that already included a candidate who blathers about ?Islamofascism? or takes an ueber-hawkish line on Iran would be the closest thing to a deliberate act of self-destruction by a party that we would have ever seen.

GOP Nomination Race: Bill Kristol Thinks it's Breaking in the Direction of
2007-11-04 23:24:00
The editor of Weekly Standard William Kristol thinks the GOP nomination race might be breaking in the direction of Mike Huckabee and John McCain. A week ago I suggested the Republican presidential contest could legitimately be considered a five-way race. Now a new Washington Post/ABC national poll has Giuliani at 33 percent (down 1 point from a month ago), McCain at 19 percent (up 7), Thompson at 16 percent (down 1), Romney at 11 percent (unchanged), and Huckabee at 9 percent (up 1). The Rasmussen tracking poll, which has a much tighter screen for GOP primary voters (and is probably more meaningful), has Giuliani at 21 percent (down 2 from a month-ago), Thompson at 17 percent (down 5), McCain at 15 percent (up 3), Romney at 12 percent (down 2), and Huckabee at 12 percent (up 7). In both polls, the "second tier" candidates, McCain and Huckabee, are gaining, and the "first tier" candidates aren't. What's more, in Iowa Huckabee is now in a tie for second place (in the RealClearPo...
Noam Chomsky is as Jewish as Irving Kristol
2007-11-02 04:01:00
It seems at times that AIPAC is in control of US foreign policy. The neocon movement was fathered by Irving Kristol and a large percentage of the neocon movement still consists of Jews. Those of us who have Jewish friends know that AIPAC and the neocons don't represent the American Jewish community. Murray Polner explains just how unrepresentative AIPAC and the neocons are in:We Aren?t One: American Jewish Voices for Peace Back in the 1980s the major American Jewish welfare organization adopted as its fundraising slogan "We are One." The implication was that American Jews were a united bloc. But we are not "one" and never have been. Ideologically, we are everything from anarchists to Zionists, working people to the gilded rich. Noam Chomsky is as Jewish as Irving Kristol, and Norman Finkelstein as Jewish as Alan Dershowitz. We are neither angels nor saints. And we are certainly not monolithic, despite perennial efforts to paint anyone critical of various aspects of Israeli policies...
GOP Race: Two-Way or Five-Way?
2007-10-30 04:16:00
Fred Barnes's piece in the new issue of The Weekly Standard ("The Two-Man Race") is particularly useful for its reminder that a helpful way to think about a presidential election--or any election--is to consider the "scenario" each candidate has for winning. When I was in politics, we used to call this "the theory of the campaign." A political strategist has to have such a theory (and some backup theories). It allows him to makes decisions about resources, to figure out which rivals are a threat and which aren't (or when and where they're a threat), to focus on key inflection points, and ultimately to figure out what discrete events have to be made to happen to create a path to victory. It's clear Giuliani and Romney have credible paths to victory, ones that Fred lays out. But so, I think, do McCain, Huckabee, and especially Thompson. As Fred emphasizes, the primaries are a dynamic process. And dynamism, I suspect, trumps money. Or, to put it another way: An early caucus or pri...
Bill Kristol: Despite the Gloom and Doom Predictions, Republicans Will Win
2007-10-13 20:29:00
Republicans are downcast, depressed, and demoralized. Bush is unpopular. Cheney is even more unpopular. Scandals continue to bedevil congressional Republicans, and it's hard to see the GOP taking back either the House or Senate in 2008. History suggests it's not easy to retain the White House after eight years in power (viz. the elections of 1960, 1968, 1976, and 2000). And the Republican presidential candidates seem problematic, each in his own way. Meanwhile, the Clinton coronation proceeds apace. Normally sensible commentators discourse on her Hamiltonian qualities and on today's liberals' Burkean ways. (If Hamilton and Burke weren't so used to having their memories misappropriated, they'd be spinning in their graves.) The American people, it's presumed, are too befogged by the mainstream media to see through pathetic Democratic stunts like rolling out a not-poor 12-year-old to read a radio script making the case for government-provided health insurance for allegedly p...
Bill Kristol at the Ass Rodeo
2007-10-12 04:39:00
Is it time yet?In March of 2003, highly paid stuffed suit Bill Kristol puffed important when he solemnly declared,A time will come to scrutinize our government's management of the war's aftermath, its equivocations on democracy in Iraq, its inadequate defense budget, and much else. But for now, at this moment of historic opportunity and national resolve, we simply pray for the president, his advisers, and our brave men and women in uniform. June 2003, Bill Kristol,For that matter, the notion that the Bush administration really, really, in its heart of hearts, had other, preferred reasons for taking out Saddam Hussein--particularly, that it did so to justify removing its troops from Saudi Arabia--and that the entire war was therefore a fraud . . . well, this idea, too, is crackpot. In May, 2004, it was this,We do not know how close the American effort in Iraq may be to irrecoverable failure. We are inclined to believe, however, that the current Washington wisdom—that the United S...
Kristol: Is Rudy the most electable Republican?
2007-10-08 02:53:00
Last week Rudy Giuliani said this: "Every poll shows that I would be, by far, the strongest candidate against Hillary Clinton. There hasn't been one taken in the last six or seven months that shows anything other than I'm the Republican that has the best chance to beat her." If you take out the "by far," Rudy is basically right. In the most recent polls matching up the leading GOP candidates against Clinton, Rudy loses in the Rasmussen survey by 48 to 43, while Fred Thompson (for example) trails by 49 to 41. In the Fox News survey, Rudy is behind 46 to 39, while Thompson faces a larger deficit, 48 to 35. So Rudy does better. On the other hand: 1. The difference in Rudy's relative performance and Thompson's really isn't that great. And it's not as if Rudy is defeating Hillary while everyone else is losing. They're all losing, in accord with the current generic gap between the parties. Indeed, six months ago Rudy was running 4 points ahead of Clinton (in the Real Clear Polit...
