Kumi Koda Is Bringing Sexy Back
2007-01-03 15:39:03 It?s official: Kumi Koda is Japan’s biggest pop icon last year, selling more albums than reigning J-pop queen Ayumi Hamasaki. Kumi, who prides herself on being a modern-day sex goddess, has reportedly amassed an amazing $163.8 million in sales from releasing 12 singles, a greatest hits album and a DVD last year. Last week, she received a trophy from Oricon (Japan’s Billboard) for her ero-kakkoii (Japanese for erotic cool) power. The timing could not be better. In a stagnating J-pop scene dominated by familiar names who keep churning out familiar tunes, flamboyant Kumi, 25, has been a breath of fresh air. Instead of taking a back seat while watching the Korean Wave soar, it seems Japan has finally decided to rejoin the race for the Asian dollar.
