I apologize for not posting more this week. I've been a little strapped for cash and have had to pick up a part time job, so it's taking me longer to do research. This is a lazy post, I'm aware, but while I work on my next post (which will be a summary of the Don Siegelman situation), I thought you guys might enjoy this article that I found which was published in In These Times in May 2004 by the late Kurt Vonnegut. It's a much needed affirmation that we are not the ones who are insane. Many years ago, I was so innocent I still considered it possible that we could become. the humane and reasonable America so many members of my generation used to dream of. We dreamed of such an America during the Great Depression, when there were no jobs. And then we fought and often died for that dream during the Second World War, when there was no peace. But I know now that there is not a chance in hell of America’s becoming humane and reasonable. Because power corrupts us, and absolute power ...

Slapstick - Kurt Vonnegut
2007-09-14 18:01:00
A few days ago I finished reading, Slapstick by Kurt Vonnegut. Supposedly, the book got poor reviews, but I actually found it to be a great and quick read. I'm not big into science fiction and even though a lot of Vonnegut's books are fantasy, I enjoy the creative leaps he takes with in the novels. I've only read two of his books, Slaughterhouse V and Slapstick, but it's enough to know I want to read more of his work.Yesterday when I was doing my laundry I started reading Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell. Even though I don't necessarily find his work as interesting as Vonnegut's, the writing is worlds apart. Orwell is an amazing writer. The way he points out facts and the smallest possible observations make the reader feel like they are right there in the midst of action. Hopefully I'll remember some of the techniques they both used when writing because, in my opinion, both of them are geniuses. While reading up on George Orwell I came across his, "Rules for Writer...
Seeking Book Suggestions
2007-08-23 13:13:00
Every few months, I ask for new book suggestions since I tend to go through books rather quickly during my bus and Metro commute. Today is one of those days. If you have any suggestions, please leave a comment or e-mail me at seanramblings at yahoo [dot] com.Of course, asking for book suggestions can be vague since you probably have no idea what I like to read. Therefore, here is a list of books I have read over the past few months, which I hope will help:- The Harry Potter series- ?Can I Keep My Jersey? 11 Teams, 5 Countries, and 4 Years in My Life as a Basketball Vagabond? by Paul Shirley- "Chuck Klosterman IV: A Decade of Curious People and Dangerous Ideas" by Chuck KlostermanActually, I can't remember what I read before I started to re-read the Harry Potter series. I'm also a big fan of David Halberstam, Kurt Vonnegut and Nick Hornby. Thanks for your help!

Yankees Quick Check: Pitching + Run Support + Defense=Win
2007-05-29 22:54:00
Tyler Clippard came through for his seasoned, big league teammates Tuesday night against the White Sox. In return, the defense and the offense chipped in to help him out. This Yankees' season could have been scripted by the late, great, Kurt Vonnegut himself, as this cosmically challenged team found itself fraught with a plague of injuries, poor plays, and silent bats in the lineup. If momentum ends with the next day's starter, the Yankees have stumbled every fifth day with a new, unproven arm sent out to the mound to earn his first major-league win and to keep the team from slipping further down the greased pole that is the AL East standings. Tuesday night's game represented the prototype game which the Yankees need if they are to get back to .500 and then mount some sort of run at either a wild card berth, or, dare I say it, the division title. There's been a lot written about the talent that's on this team and how eventually these players will begin to play better baseball b...

A writing hero of mine, Kurt Vonnegut passed away. His books filled my teen years with enjoyment and wonder. I hang my head low, for the kids today will need him now as much as I did then. ?And I say to Sam now: ?Sam?here?s the book.? It?s so short and jumbled and jangled, Sam, because there is nothing intelligent to say about a massacre. Everybody is supposed to be dead, to never say anything or want anything ever again. Everything is supposed to be very quiet after a massacre, and it always is, except for the birds. And what do the birds say? All there is to say about a massacre, things like ?Poo-tee-weet?? ?Billy and the rest wandered out onto the shady street. The trees were leafing out. There was nothing going on out there, no traffic of any kind. There was only one vehicle, an abandoned wagon drawn by two horses. The wagon was green and coffin shaped. Birds were talking. One bird said to Billy Pilgrim. ?Poo-tee-weet???
David Halberstam and Kurt Vonnegut
2007-04-26 03:21:00
In just the past few weeks, two of my favorite authors passed away. I was first introduced to both David Halberstam and Kurt Vonnegut in college. Although I do not remember the specific class (one was for a history course, the other politics), I certainly remember reading both Vonnegut?s ?Player Piano? and ?Galapagos.? I liked Vonnegut?s style of writing and the ideas presented in his books. Over the years, I?ve probably read another half dozen of his books. I don?t exactly know how to describe his books, but there were always parts that made me smile and parts that made me think. So it goes. By the way, Vonnegut has a terrific cameo in ?Back to School? starring Rodney Dangerfield.I read Halberstam?s ?The Fifties? in one of my favorite college classes, a senior level history class about United States history in the 1950s. What struck me most about the book was the way Halberstam took nearly every part of the decade and wrote in-depth chapters for each topic. There was such ...

Novelist Kurt Vonnegut dies at age 84
2007-04-14 20:47:00
By CHRISTIAN SALAZAR,Associated Press WriterNEW YORK - Kurt Vonnegut, the satirical novelist who captured the absurdity of war and questioned the advances of science in darkly humorous works such as "Slaughterhouse- Five" and "Cat's Cradle," died Wednesday. He was 84. Vonnegut, who often marveled that he had lived so long despite his lifelong smoking habit, had suffered brain injuries after a fall at his Manhattan home weeks ago, said his wife, photographer Jill Krementz. The author of at least 19 novels, many of them best-sellers, as well as dozens of short stories, essays and plays, Vonnegut relished the role of a social critic. He lectured regularly, exhorting audiences to think for themselves and delighting in barbed commentary against the institutions he felt were dehumanizing people."I will say anything to be funny, often in the most horrible situations," Vonnegut, whose watery, heavy-lidded eyes and unruly hair made him seem to be in existential pain, once told a gathering of...
Kurt Vonnegut is dead
2007-04-14 12:39:00
Just a brief stopgap post today, and I assure you a longer piece will be along shortly as time and energy permit. I just wanted to say I was deeply saddened to hear about the death of Kurt Vonnegut, whose novels I used to devour on a regular basis. He was a standing example of what was good about American culture, and American socialists aren?t so thick on the ground that the loss of an articulate radical is easily missed.I expect there will now be something of a run on sales of Slaughterhouse Five, and rightly so. But do yourself a favour and dig a little deeper. Check out Mother Night or Cat?s Cradle. Maybe even Bluebeard. But certainly don?t miss Mother Night.Rud eile: From What Next?, this sterling defence of James Connolly by Rayner Lysaght may be of interest to regular readers.

2007-04-12 14:20:00
NEW YORK —  In books such as “Slaughterhouse-Five,&rdq-uo; “Cat’s Cradle,” and “Hocus Pocus,” Kurt Vonnegut mixed the bitter and funny with a touch of the profound. Vonnegut, regarded by many critics as a key influence in shaping 20th-century American literature, died Wednesday at 84. He had suffered brain injuries after a recent fall at his Manhattan home, said his wife, photographer Jill Krementz. I never really got into reading him. From a distance, a talented writer he may have been, and by that I mean talented at writing what he was envisioning.. but what he envisioned was at the high end of the weird scale, certainly. The man was a prisoner in WWII, and as a result was in Dresden when they firebombed the place. He always claimed that that incident didn’t have anything to do with the weirdness factor that always followed him around.   If that’s true, then the event causing the behavior …if there was one…I would ...

Novelist Kurt Vonnegut diesBy Dinitia SmithNew York Times News ServicePublished April 11, 2007, 10:49 PM CDTNEW YORK -- Kurt Vonnegut, whose dark comic talent and urgent moral vision in novels like "Slaughterhouse-Five," "Cat's Cradle" and "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater" caught the temper of his times and the imagination of a generation, died Wednesday night in Manhattan. He was 84 and had homes in Manhattan and in Sagaponack on Long Island. His death was reported by Morgan Entrekin, a longtime family friend, who said Vonnegut suffered brain injuries as a result of a fall several weeks ago. Vonnegut wrote plays, essays and short fiction. But it was his novels that became classics of the American counterculture, making him a literary idol, particularly to students in the 1960s and '70s. Dog-eared paperback copies of his books could be found in the back pockets of blue jeans and in dorm rooms on campuses throughout the United States.Like Mark Twain, Vonnegut used humor to tackle the b...

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/-11/books/11cnd-vonnegut.html?_r-=1&hp&oref=slogin Kurt Vonnegut has left us. He passed away Wednesday night in Manhattan; the link in the title has the New York times report. My first Vonnegut book was at the age of 12, when I read "Cat's Cradle". I was too young to understand it well then, but I was intrigued and entertained. Next at about 13, I read "Slaghterhouse Five", and it was then that I first fully appreciated his literary genius. I've since read all except (about three?) of his books, and still own some today. He has always been one of my few must-have authors, present on every bookshelf I have owned. Probably my favorite of his, what I consider his defining work, is "Hocus Pocus". Listen: I was never lucky enough to go to a school that was open-minded enough to teach Vonnegut in class, but we junior high boys read him anyway, dodging the principal because of the naughty words. We would stand around in a circle and read "God Bless You Mr, ...
