"Kyoto Trough" solar cooker, will it catch on?
2009-05-02 07:54:00
I thought of it a week ago and modeled it in art of illusion and it seems to work as intended. The name is inspired by the "Kyoto box" solar cooker that netted thousands of dollars for its "inventor". In this case, I think it IS a bone fida new type of solar cooker. Check it out http://www.instr

...The device, which cost Bøhner $5 to make, would decrease pollution, deforestation, energy costs, and about 1.3 million deaths a year in Africa alone caused by wood-burning related respiratory illnesses. The life-saving estimate does not even include the number of deaths resulting from contaminated water.

LET?S BEGIN WITH WHAT WE CAN DO!????????? P.T.O. (PEOPLE TOGETHER FOR MT. OGURA), a new citizens? environmental and cultural action group, founded in Kyoto, March 2008Ogurayama, the beautiful dome-shaped mountain rising on the northern side of the Hozu Gorge as viewed from Arashiyama. A mountain quite unique in its literary associations ? from the courtier poets and poetesses of Heian through Priest Saigyo (who had his first hermitage there), Fujiwara Teika (who compiled the karuta collection of 100 Poems by 100 Poets there) right down to Basho (who wrote his Saga Diary there), Kyorai and later haiku poets. To Mount Ogurathat morning has comeof early winter showers;when, only yesterday, all four directions dimly glowedwith red and yellow leaves. On the one hand, it has become a storehouse of wildlife ? kingfishers, little cuckoos, deer, wild rabbits, monkeys and so forth ? for its varied forests comprise both broadleaf deciduous and...
Gothic Lolita (gosu-loli)
2008-09-22 10:05:00
??????????????"Gothic Lolita" is a fashion style, born in Japan, that blends the dark, brooding gothic and the light, frilly Lolita looks. To see is to believe. In other countries, the gothic look is an expression of alienation, teen anger, even anarchy. Piercing and aggressive tattoing are often part of the package.Lolita is of course the young woman and title of the great Vladimir Nabokov novel. In Japan, she has been appropriated in the "Lolita complex" (rori-con). This is the phenomenon describing Japanese men who are obsessed with very young--very young--girls.In terms of fashion, Lolita refers to hyper-cute girls in frilly pink and white outfits.Young Japanese women have melded these different forms of alienation and created a bizarre sub-category fashion look. In highly detailed outfits, complete in many cases with Little Bo Peep umbrellas, they parade in groups in city centers.Disclaimer: The author is not an expert on gothic, Lolita, or gothic Lolita fashion. Shibuya 109
2008-09-20 02:02:00
?????Shibuya 109, or just 109 (ichi-maru-kyu, in Japanese), is a landmark for women between the ages of 10 and 30.The cylindrical building stands at a fork in the road just up a slope from the scramble intersection in front of Shibuya Station, in Tokyo.Within its eight above-ground and two underground floors one can find the latest fashions in Japan. In addition, it is a sociologists dream. On each floor, you will find many boutiques, each offering a very defined fashion look. The women who work as clerks in these shops wear the clothes of the shop--and the attitude appropriate to the look. The pinker the fashion, the cuter the look and behavior of the clerks. In the hip-hop influenced shops, the attitude was considerably cooler. In one boutique, the two women clerks flew around the tiny shop screaming "irashaimase" (welcome). They both were deeply tanned, short, cute, and were sporting completely blonde hair, short cotton skirts, and lots of bangles. Across the hall, in a much more su...
Japanese Fashion: Legs and Tattoos
2008-09-17 06:13:00
?????????????On a recent trip to Tokyo, I wandered around Shinjuku, Daikanyama, and the Harajuku/Omotesando areas and was struck by many things. One surprise for someone coming up from Kyoto was the number of tattoos, especially on women. In Kansai, tattoos are still a bit rare. Mobsters, of course, and the occasional college student or artist have tattoos. In Tokyo, however, tattoos were everywhere. And on all parts of the body.We saw countless tattoos high up on the thigh just barely visible under a skirt or hot pants, just next to cleavage, on the back of the neck, the side of the ankle, the shoulder blade, etc.The woman with the Mickey Mouse tattoo--it's real--on her calf was waiting for a train at Shibuya Station. Her exposed shoulders featured elaborate dragons. One sign that tattoos may even be a bit passe was that we spied a woman, in her late 20s, who had the telltale scars on her left arm of tattoo removal. She was feeding a baby in an Italian coffee shop.Another, more attrac...
Japanese Women Shopping
2008-09-08 03:05:00
??????????These two women are heading towards the Keihan Line in Yodoyabashi Station, in Osaka, on their way home after a day of shopping. The women on the left, three bags, is clearly the daughter; the woman on the right, two bags, is her mother. This is a common site in Japan, the mother-daughter shopping date. The daughter is dressed in low-cut, high-heel boots. She is wearing denim short shorts, ripped and or frayed in tactical places. Her top shows off a brown midriff and petite belly button, and is cut to expose her shoulders.O-ka-san is dressed more conservatively in white capri pants, low-heel pumps without a back, and a brown top with the collar turned up. She has the de rigueur Vuitton bag. Both women have dyed their hair to a similar degree. The younger woman is taller, which is common in Japan.Daddy is no doubt at work, and his credit card took a hit today. Including lunch, the ladies look as they have made quite a day off it.Yahoo Japan Auction ServiceBook a hotel in Japan ...
Japanese Language Lesson: Janglish
2008-06-05 13:26:00
??????????Japanese freely borrows from English and other foreign languages. Many common foreign words have been incorporated--with a slightly different pronunciation--into Japanese.Along the way, though, meaning sometimes gets altered. Here then is a short list of some "English" (and non-English) words often used in Japan that may cause misunderstanding.????? Kyoto's Only Remaining Aristocratic Home: Reizeike
2008-06-03 11:27:00
???Already in decline, Japan's aristocracy met its end when American forces formally abolished it following World War II.Prior to that, in the 1860s, the Kyoto aristocracy was badly wounded by the relocation of the Imperial Family from Kyoto to Tokyo.Without its privileges and perquisites, the remaining and now former aristocratic families struggled to maintain their grand homes in the decades after the War. In many cases, this meant the wrecking ball--selling the land and building smaller homes or apartment blocks on the same lot.One such home however has avoided that fate and remains in Kyoto.Reizeikei is located behind walls on the grounds of Doshisha University, just across from the Imperial Palace. It has been designated a Valuable Cultural Asset. The home is not normally open to the public, but on occasion the family throws open its doors to allow a glimpse at a lifestyle long since gone. The structure is huge and deep. The front of the house--behind an imposing wooden gate and ...

Maiko Sighting in Kyoto
2008-05-21 02:41:00
?????On a sultry spring day in Kyoto, there was a large crowd gathered outside of the Kaburenjo Theater (pictured below) on Pontocho. This is the narrow street on which there are many bars, restaurants, and tea houses. That could mean only one thing: Maiko were nearby.Sure enough, under a makeshift tent two were sitting surrounded by a camera-toting mob.Middle-aged Japanese men jostled for position next to the two women as their pals snapped photos on cell phones and tiny digital cameras."O-nee-san, o-nee-san (sister, sister), look this way!" called out other older people with rural accents and red badges marking them as being part of a tour group from central Japan.French tourists in t-shirts and sunglasses held their cameras aloft, snapped, checked the photo, frowned, and reshot. Then, without a word, the two maiko stood up and left. The crowd silently parted, then scrambled after them clicking away. The woman pictured above right is named Ichiraku, and is a Pontocho maiko. And a vis...

The View From China: As it Continues to Change, China Offers a Growing Numb

IN THE AIR, ENROUTE FROM HONG KONG TO JAPAN - The fiery orange sunrise I see out my window is mesmerizing. I?m always filled with awe over the dawn of a new day, especially during those long trips when sunrise jolts me awake from the kind of cramped, restless sleep familiar to travelers the world over. On this day, however, I?m wide-awake. It?s the start of the newest leg of my Asian adventure. I?m tucked into seat 11A, and am quickly lost in thought. So countries that signed Kyoto have increased their gas emissions 3 times as fast as the United States. So when they claim that they were prevented from solving a problem by somebody... In group, out group Japanese terms
2008-04-10 05:21:00
????????As has often been noted, in Japanese society much is made of the in/out group distinction. The way you relate to, talk to, and consider people depends to a great extent on whether that person is part of your group or, conversely, outside of your group. These groups can be as simple as your family, but also your college club, a company, etc.Today we will look briefly at the appropriate way to describe someone. This depends on your relationship to the person you are talking about. If, for example, you are talking about your own mother to a neighbor, you would use the word ?? (haha), which means "mother." If the neighbor was talking about the same person--your mom--he would would say ???? (oka-a-san). You are talking about a person in your group; he is talking about a person not in his group.Below is a list of terms for various people, and which to use depending on the relationship of the person you are referring to. The first example, on the left, is how you describe a person in...

Kumogahata, Kyoto
2008-04-08 13:25:00
??????In the mountains of far north Kyoto, a small village lies at the end of a narrow road that snakes its way up from the Kamo River: Kumogahata.Hard as it is to believe, you are still within the city limits of Kyoto. For a tourist, there is little to see. It is however a step back in time, and the area is popular with hikers, cyclists, and campers. The road follows a narrow, fast-flowing river that feeds into the larger Kamo River. In spite of recent road work, in many places only one car can pass at a time. The buildings in the village have tiled roofs, white plaster walls, and an engawa porch. Our purpose was to clean my wife's family's ancestral grave. My father-in-law brought flowers, incense, and matches. We cleaned the sticks and leaves that had fallen on the plot. Then he placed flowers on either side of the headstone. Finally, each of us put a lit stick of incense into the altar on the headstone. We placed our hands together briefly and prayed. The area was in the past the ma...

Manga in San Francisco

Time constraints notwithstanding, manga was easy to find.A book store on Union Square had an entire section, shelf after shelf, devoted to Japanese manga in English translation. Not far away, south of Market Street, the Cartoon Museum has a large collection of work. While it is not specifically devoted to Japanese graphic art, hardcore fans of manga will still find something of interest.I had time to take in an exhibit of Mary Blair, who designed "Alice in Wonderland" and did early work in anime. A's, Red Sox get MLB show on the road
2008-03-28 10:05:00
Major League Baseball created a lot of buzz in Japan when it opened its 2008 season in Tokyo with two games between the World Series champion Boston Red Sox and the Oakland Athletics on March 25 and 26.The teams split the series, Boston winning a dramatic encounter on opening day 6-5 in 10 innings and the A?s holding on to win Game 2 by a score of 5-1. Both games were played at Tokyo Dome.Former Seibu Lion right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka became just the second Japanese native to start a season opener following Hideo Nomo, who did it three times, once for the Detroit Tigers in 2000 and twice for the Los Angeles Dodgers (2003-2004).Matsuzaka was also making his first appearance in Japan since joining Boston for 51 million dollars at the end of the 2006 season. Dice-K, as he is known stateside, went 15-12 with a 4.40 ERA in his rookie MLB season and topped that off with a World Series ring.Matsuzaka?s homecoming was a bit of a letdown, however, as he struggled with his control early on ...

I still dig the classic "Vera Cruz" but this is an awesome tribute. Then you've got a KJM Remix to Masa Collective's "Love is Everywhere". Myoshinji Temple

???On a stroll through Myoshinji Temple in the fall, I took a picture of one of the many sub-temples whose gate happened to be open.Unless there is a special exhibit or occasion, the sub-temple gates are usually shut tight. As a working temple that is less interested in tourist lucre than in its stated mission--zen--Myoshinji manages to maintain a very other worldly feel and a very down-to-earth feel.Priests scurry about in robes while children play in the (almost) car-free paradise of the grounds.Students and older people use the temple--which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year--for walks or to cut through on the way to Hanazono Station or school. The grounds are vast, and the thrum of traffic soon recedes as you enter the gates.AccessTake the Saiin Line four stops on the local line from Kyoto Station. EU Releases Environment Scorecard Treehugger blogged this week on the self-scoring the EU released on their progress toward Kyoto emissions and energy goals. The outlook was not that great, altogether, though progress has been made in the appropriate direction, unlike the US and Japan, which also received scores, and seem to be heading in the wrong direction. Unfortunately, according to the scorecard, the EU is still not on track to meet those goals. They reproduced a chart from the report in the post, giving a clear indication of how the various initiatives are doing, as percentage changes from a baseline calculation. In fact, the chart shows the only current hope for success in the EU of meeting their goals, in greenhouse gas emission reduction. Other areas, such as electrici...

Some Cities Embrace Kyoto Protocol
2008-03-02 21:54:00
Summary: Mayor John Rayson saw that provide powerful the storm winds to throw his boat in the trees. It is noted that the fish fishery are smaller and less abundant. He was concerned to be a house perched just above sea level while the ocean levels rise. And so it will go before the city commission and demand changes in the building code that would provide incentives to put up structures in the environment friendly and reduces the amount of greenhouse gases that warm this city of 100,000 emits . She is one of a number of earth-friendly measures being here, lawns and parks reused for irrigation water, a new library operated by renewable energy. As Rayson puts it: "I want to see that the city make his party." The local politicians as Rayson abound across the country, trying to embrace the measures of the Kyoto Protocol - which called for mandatory reductions of greenhouse gases hot among the nations signing - even while the federal government refuses.
Central Post Offices In Japan
2008-03-01 04:52:00
?????Japanese central post offices are a real life-saver if you need to post something out of normal office hours. Central post offices are open longer than local post offices and at weekends.Central post offices in big cities such as Tokyo, Nagoya and Kyoto are usually located near the main railway station. For example Nagoya central post office at Nagoya Station is open Monday-Friday 9am-7pm, Saturday 9am-5pm and Sunday 9am-12.30pm. Outside those hours an emergency 24 window is available until the post office reopens fully the next day.Tokyo central post office located at Tokyo Station's Marunouchi Exit is open even longer, Monday-Friday 9am-9pm, Saturday 9am-7pm and Sunday 9am-7pm. Kyoto central post office to your left as you leave the main exit at Kyoto Station has the same hours as Tokyo.District post offices, one per ward (ku), also maintain an after hours window for emergency posting. For example, my district post office in Tenpaku ward in Nagoya is open Monday-Friday 9am-7p...
Classifying When You Count in Japanese
2008-02-29 04:45:00
???????Counting in Japanese is tricky enough as it is.Making things even worse (or more fun?) is that you will need to alter the classifier depending upon what you count. In English, there are "pods" and "prides" that indicate that you are counting or talking about whales and lions. In daily life, though, one is generally spared having to know this. Not so in Japanese. This blog will go over just several of the more common ways of classifying what is being counted.Counting people, for example, you use "nin" ???. Naturally, though, there are exceptions to this rule:One person = "hitori" (???Two people= "futari" ????Three people="san nin" ????When counting non-human creatures, "hiki" ???is used. One cat/dog/insect/fish becomes: "ippiki" ????. Two are "ni hiki" ????.Books and magazines use "satsu" ???. One book or magazine is: "issatsu" ????. Two are "nisatsu" ????.For shoes and socks, one needs "soku" ???. One pair of socks = "kutsushita issoku" ??????.For flat shapes, "mai" ???is what...
Kyoto Tower
2008-02-26 07:47:00
?????Towering above nearby buildings, Kyoto Tower is a striking landmark that over the years has become something of a tourist attraction in the ancient capital. It is just north of Kyoto Station, and because of restrictions on building height in Kyoto, it dominates the skyline in a way that towers in other cities could only dream of.Built in 1964 in tandem with the Olympic Games held in Tokyo that year, it was opposed by the majority of Kyotoites. The city government however forced through its construction in the name of appearing "modern."For younger residents of Kyoto, it is just one part of the modern cityscape; for older people, and many foreigners, it remains a symbol of a construction industry gone wild--and terrible taste. Noted critic Alex Kerr famously called it a "stake through the heart of the city."The Tower is built on the roof of a building--the Kyoto Tower Hotel--in front of the Station building. The first floor of that building has a gift shop which swarms with juni...
Quintessentially Kyoto
2008-02-25 13:35:00
This morning, I randomly found myself in Kyoto. It dawned on me that living in the heart Osaka can sometimes deprive a boy of all things traditionally Japanese, so in a bid to get to the heart of the Japanese heart, I randomly found myself in a plum blossom viewing festival being held at Tenmangu Shrine. Is there some kind of ...
Kinosaki Onsen (hot spring)
2008-02-23 03:33:00
????Located near the Sea of Japan in Hyogo Prefecture, Kinosaki is a quaint town with many public baths and onsen, or hot springs. The economy of the town is devoted almost entirely to hot spring tourism and crab, which is a local delicacy.Bathing in hot springs in the area dates back 1400 years. The resort town of Kinosaki has many ryokan (Japanese inns) and seven public baths. These draw in crowds primarily from Osaka and Kyoto, from which express trains arrive frequently.Exiting the train station, the main street is a jumble of restaurants, antique shops, and fish stalls that sell freshly caught crab and squid and various types of fish. Crab can range in price from 1500 yen (about $15) per all the way up to 15,000 yen depending upon the size and type.At the end of this street is the Otani River. Willows lean over this small, tree-lined canal that feeds into the Sea of Japan. In front of you is Ichi no Yu (pictured above right), a massive public bath that features a "Cave Bath." Tu...
Hyakumanben Flea Market, Kyoto
2008-02-19 06:55:00
百万éEvery month, there are three major flea markets held at Kyoto temples: Hyakumanben on the 15th at Chion-ji, Kobo-san on the 20th at Toji Temple, and Tenjin-san on the 25th at Kita no Tenmangu.Hyakumanben is the smallest of the three but offers a wide variety of handmade jewelry, bags, clothing, and wonderful homemade breads and other food. Chion Temple is located just across the street from Kyoto University on Imadegawa Dori. The temple grounds teems with visitors and bargaining on the non-food items is half of the fun.Pictured above are handmade pouches that can be used for cell phones, a wallet, or more traditional items. Below are beads that can be strung together to create a necklace or bracelet. Most of the prices ranged from 300 - 2,000 yen. The sellers/artists tended to be young creative women, though the woman who sold me a bag of kimchi has clearly seen many years of flea markets.AccessBuses #17 and 206 from Kyoto Station, buses 201, 31, 17, 17 from Shijo Kawaramachi...
IL CONTATORE DI KYOTO
2008-02-18 05:46:00
Pe...

This Day In History - Kyoto Protocol Comes into Force
2008-02-16 21:24:00
- - The 1992 Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, produced a treaty aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in order to combat global warming, but it failed to establish mandatory limits or enforcement provisions. The Kyoto Protocol is an amendment to the agreement that establishes these limits. Countries that ratify this treaty ...
