??????????Japanese freely borrows from English and other foreign languages. Many common foreign words have been incorporated--with a slightly different pronunciation--into Japanese.Along the way, though, meaning sometimes gets altered. Here then is a short list of some "English" (and non-English) words often used in Japan that may cause misunderstanding.????? (freeter) = someone who works several different jobs, who moves from job to job without a full-time position??? (baito) = a part-time job???? (risutora) = restructuring, to be fired from a job?????? (wan pattan, "one pattern") = to do things in the same way, in one pattern, over and over again????? (my pace) = to do things at one's on speed, way????? (goal in) = to get married??????? (bajin roado, "virgin road") = wedding aisle, down which the bride will walk to the altar???? (rabu rabu) = to be deeply in love????? (no touch) = to be purposely uninvolved in or with?????? Kumogahata, Kyoto
2008-04-08 13:25:00
??????In the mountains of far north Kyoto, a small village lies at the end of a narrow road that snakes its way up from the Kamo River: Kumogahata.Hard as it is to believe, you are still within the city limits of Kyoto. For a tourist, there is little to see. It is however a step back in time, and the area is popular with hikers, cyclists, and campers. The road follows a narrow, fast-flowing river that feeds into the larger Kamo River. In spite of recent road work, in many places only one car can pass at a time. The buildings in the village have tiled roofs, white plaster walls, and an engawa porch. Our purpose was to clean my wife's family's ancestral grave. My father-in-law brought flowers, incense, and matches. We cleaned the sticks and leaves that had fallen on the plot. Then he placed flowers on either side of the headstone. Finally, each of us put a lit stick of incense into the altar on the headstone. We placed our hands together briefly and prayed. The area was in the past the ma...

A's, Red Sox get MLB show on the road
2008-03-28 10:05:00
Major League Baseball created a lot of buzz in Japan when it opened its 2008 season in Tokyo with two games between the World Series champion Boston Red Sox and the Oakland Athletics on March 25 and 26.The teams split the series, Boston winning a dramatic encounter on opening day 6-5 in 10 innings and the A?s holding on to win Game 2 by a score of 5-1. Both games were played at Tokyo Dome.Former Seibu Lion right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka became just the second Japanese native to start a season opener following Hideo Nomo, who did it three times, once for the Detroit Tigers in 2000 and twice for the Los Angeles Dodgers (2003-2004).Matsuzaka was also making his first appearance in Japan since joining Boston for 51 million dollars at the end of the 2006 season. Dice-K, as he is known stateside, went 15-12 with a 4.40 ERA in his rookie MLB season and topped that off with a World Series ring.Matsuzaka?s homecoming was a bit of a letdown, however, as he struggled with his control early on ...

Chubu International Airport Shopping
2008-02-28 03:45:00
??????Chubu International Airport or Centrair is Japan's third largest airport after Tokyo's Narita Airport and Kansai International Airport near Osaka.Located on a man-made island off the west coast of the Chita Peninsula to the south of Nagoya, Centrair is only 25 minutes away from Kanayama Station and 30 minutes from Nagoya Station by express train.Centrair is yet to take off as a real Asian hub but if you do find yourself waiting for a flight or an onward connection be sure to visit the Sky Town shopping and dining center on the 4th floor of the airport.Unlike shopping at Narita, Centrair has not really gone down the international brand name route and its shops and restaurants are meant to represent the best of the Chubu area of central Japan. As you ascend the escalator to Sky Town, on your left is a recreation of a number of Meiji-era buildings - Renga Dori (Brick Road) - housing up-market shops, restaurants and cafes. To your right is the faux Edo-Period Chochin Yokocho (Lan...
Kyushu Ramen- VAN NUYS, CALIFORNIA
2008-02-26 18:54:00
(See, it's in Kanji, not English)Los Angelenos know that if they want to find the best places for Ramen (Japanese Noodles) that they can go to either Little Tokyo, West LA, or Gardena/Torrance. But what is the average Valley-ite to do when they crave these delicious noodles soaked in warm sumptuous broth. Look no further than Kyushu Ramen in Van Nuys. This is a restaurant located in a small mini-mall surrounded by a Japanese Video Shop, a Donut Shop, a Starbucks (of course), and an Italian Restaurant. It might be hard to locate as the main store signage is in Japanese. The Mini-mall sign though has it all in the good old-fashioned English alphabet.Kyushu Ramen previously had a very unremarkable interior, which consisted of fold out tables and chairs in a stark all white room, with little if any decor. When it was like this you would be hard pressed not to believe that it was closing down or the owners didn't much care. It didn't even have a restaurant feel, but more of a ...

88 Temple Pilgrimage - Kyoto
2008-01-04 09:19:00
????????Japan's most famous pilgrimage route is on the southern island of Shikoku. The 1,200 km route consists of 88 shrines, and is thus called "The 88 Temple Pilgrimage."Many of the temples along the route were founded by Kukai, the monk and scholar better known as Kobo Daishi.Today's pilgrim is more likely to do the Shikoku route in his own car, or a tour bus. Some however still don the white jackets of the pilgrim and walk it. Walking the route takes roughly two months to complete, and many of the temples offer low-priced accommodation. There are however other less arduous pilgrimage routes. Among them is "Hachi-ju Haka-sho" (88 Temple Pilgrimage), a short hike in the hills behind Ninnaji Temple that is modeled on the Shikoku route. Located in northwest Kyoto, Ninnaji is a World Heritage Site and is well worth a visit, but for locals the mountains behind it are perhaps even more inviting. In imitation of the more famous route in Shikoku, there are 88 mini-temples. These temples ...

Feather Museum Seki
2007-12-29 06:42:00
?????????Listen to the sounds of the Feather MuseumJapan has some bizarre and quirky museums: a sex museum, a ninja museum and even a sand museum. The Feather Museum in Seki, north of Inuyama in Gifu Prefecture, has nothing to do with feathers or birds. The museum is sponsored by the Feather Company that makes razors, shaving and hairdressing equipment as well as surgical scalpels. The whole area of Seki is known as one of Japan's top locations for the manufacture of high quality steel knives, swords and blades. Sword-making in the area began in the Kamakura Period (1192-1333) and has been going strong ever since. The modern, two-storey Feather Museum - a "razor memorial facility" - is dedicated to the history of shaving, beards and hairdressing both in Japan and the rest of the world. There are interesting dioramas and computer-generated exhibits on men's and women's shaving through the ages, a collection of razors and razor blades from around the world, recreations of historical b...

Not completed until 1903, but it has two nice gardens.Kazan-ji Temple (Tel: 0832 45 0258) was built in 1321, though much restoration was carried out in the 17th Century. Trendiest Expressions of 2007
2007-12-05 12:56:00
????????The annual list of the trendiest words was announced in Tokyo yesterday.Topping the list for 2007 was an expression from a local dialect from Miyazaki Prefecture: ?????????? (Do gen ka sen to ikan). Meaning "I/we/somebody have/has to do something (to solve a problem)," it was popularized by former tv talent and current Miyazaki governor Sonomama Higashi (ne Hideo Higashi).Number two was ?????? (hanikami oji). This refers to the embarrassed smiles of teenage golfer and serious heartthrob Ryo Ishikawa. He is enormously popular among women. "Oji" means prince, "hanikami" bashful. Thus, the image is of an attractive, humble young man not sure how to respond to the attention of many women fans.3. ??? (o gui). Literally, this means "big eater" or "eat a lot." This was made popular by the tv idol Gyaru (gal) Sone, who is of a normal build but can eat with the best of them. She is alleged to have downed 70 plates of sushi in one go.4. ????? (kieta nenkin). 2007-11-04 09:49:00
100%??????Today was the last day of Tokyo Designer's Week 2007, an event running from October 31 to November 4th that enveloped the whole of Tokyo and saw business, local government, and academia collaborating. Its reach went beyond the domestic, even, and involved hundreds of overseas design-related companies and individuals. The centerpiece of the week was the big exhibition, 100% Design Tokyo, that took place on the grounds of the Meiji Jingu Mae Art Gallery, staged mainly in a series of massive white tents. The sun was shining in an almost cloudless blue sky as we lined up for entry which, at 2,000 yen, turned out to be well worth it in both fun, gasp-factor, and the chance to meet people. The tent nearest the entrance, Blickfang, featured design work from Europe, mainly Germany. It was every bit as chic and imaginative as you would expect. The Czech glass was probably the most impressive in its perfection, simplicity, and unerring modernity. The Japan Brand Exhibition was a bit of...

Hip Harajuku hounds
2007-09-25 04:03:00
????????Yesterday was Autumn Equinox Day (Shuubun no Hi), officially the first day of fall, when, in theory, the last muggy days of summer give way to autumn breezes. It was Japan's second Monday off in a row, last Monday having been Respect for the Aged Day (Keiro no Hi).I spent the day enjoying what has become the very slightly cooler weather of the past few days, walking through Tokyo's Shinjuku and Yoyogi down to Harajuku. Harajuku, one of Tokyo's hubs of street culture, was as packed as ever on a holiday and also, as ever, full of as many fashion permutations as you can imagine. It wasn't exactly fashion, and it wasn't tradition, either ? a middle aged guy sitting on the edge of a flower bed on Omotesando Avenue in ripped jeans and sunglasses with his four dogs, all of them coolly decked out, if not in ripped jeans, then in sunglasses, too!Book a hotel in Japan with BookingsJapanese FictionJapan Book Shop Amazon UKHappi CoatsTagsJapan Tokyo Kyoto Nagoya Kyushu

Japan in San Francisco
2007-08-23 13:37:00
?????????????Unlike other American cities, signs of Japan can be found everywhere in San Francisco. In other cities, "Japan" tends to be confined to sushi bars and the occasional manga shop. In San Francisco, Japan is a part of the every day; it is ingrained in the city's soul. From the neighborhood 7-11--stocked with "gummy" sweets and green peas snacks, Calbee BBQ corn chips and high chew gum (pictured at right)--to Japan Town, Japanese culture is ubiquitous.Though the number of nissei continues to decline, and Japan Town has seen better days, Japan's influence remains strong.Catering to the many tourists from Japan, Japanese hotels such as Hotel Nikko are well represented. Moreover, a short ride from Union Square on a Muni light rail train, the Japanese tea garden in Golden Gate Park could be in Kyoto. Getting off at 9th street, you walk down past the Hotei restaurant and Honda service garage and into the park. The Japanese Tea Garden dates to 1894 and is the oldest public Japanes...
Nagasaki atomic Bombing 62 Years On
2007-08-09 07:02:00
??,????? It is 62 years to the day that Nagasaki was devastated by the second atomic bomb to be dropped on Japan just three days after the first bomb attack on Hiroshima.Around 70,000 people were killed and a further 70,000 later died of subsequent radioactivity-related illnesses.Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue delivered this year's Peace Declaration and paid tribute to his predecessor, Itcho Ito, who was shot and killed in April this year. The attack in 1945 from the US B-29 bomber Bockscar occurred at 11.02am with the "Fat Man" bomb exploding at a height of around 500 meters above the historic port city.Book a hotel in Japan with BookingsJapanese FictionHappi CoatsTagsJapan Nagasaki Kyushu
