Baseball’s new labor contract includes more video replay, the chance for a longer All-Star break and a small, but likely welcome perk for players: the chance to get a private room instead of a roommate during spring training. The Associated Press obtained the document that includes several changes, many starting next year.
GMs, execs weigh changes from labor deal (AP)
2011-11-23 23:35:00
Dayton Moore thought about the changes in baseball’s new labor deal and wondered how they would impact the Kansas City Royals, who spent more than $14 million this year to sign amateur talent, nearly half as much as the team’s $36 million opening-day payroll. “Obviously, we’re not going to have the luxury to do that ...

Rahm 1, Big Labor 0

Emanuel laid off 625 people.  Now, Big Labor is squawking about throwing gasoline on the fire.  They claim...
Is The NFL Labor Situation Starting To Resemble "Gridlock" In DC?
2011-04-10 01:13:00
Godell, Smith, and Gay Culverhouse Before the Senate In DCNot if Judge Susan Richard Nelson has any say about the matter.  On Wednesday (April 6th), Judge Nelson responded as any "wise" and "intelligent" person would, by giving both sides this advice "Work-Things-Out".  Tribune writer Lance Pugmire detailed the proceedings in his Wednesday night article (see article).Judge Nelson however, did state that she would render her decision in a few weeks, thus allowing time for the NFLPA & the NFL to have a chance to get back to the bargaining table.  Otherwise, Judge Nelson will be forced to make a ruling, which from most sources would most-likely go in favor of the players.During the brief proceedings, Judge Nelson had more questions...

Bears CEO Remains "Up Beat" Despite The Labor Dispute
2011-03-13 00:35:00
Today the Tribune reported that Chicago Bears CEO Ted Phillips remains "optimistic" that we will have football in 2011 despite the current "lock-out" situation.  What I also found "refreshing" was Phillips continual commitment to bringing a "championship" back to The Windy City very very soon (see article).Yes Bear Fans, these are very "trying" times (to say the least), but I have to give Phillips some "dap" for maintaining his focus on what we Bear Fans want the most, and that is to "de-throne" those "God-forsaken cheese-heads".  Phillips must be well aware of how us fans feel right now since GB took our trophy, and stunk-up the rest of the country (with Limburger) since their Super Bowl victory.  Luckily, Bill and...
Bears Front Office Addresses Current Labor Situation
2011-03-06 03:50:00
Just yesterday, the Chicago Bears Official website reported in an article that CEO Ted Phillips has ensured the organization that there will be no layoffs, furloughs, or pay-cuts to the coaching staff and the front office in the event of a "lock-out" (see article). In the article, Phillips goes on to state that the organization will proceed with a business-as-usual approach in an effort to maintain a competitive edge and have a championship season in 2011.  This to me is very encouraging news regarding our teams resolve in overtaking Green Bay, and getting to the Super Bowl.It is also further evidence that the organization is working "extremely" hard on a daily basis to get to the next level after a "surprisingly"...

Public sides with Wis. Gov. Walker in labor dispute
2011-02-21 18:02:00
According to a new Rasmussen report, 48 percent of those surveyed back Walker while 38 percent on unions' side. A near-majority believe that teachers, police officers and fire fighters should not be allowed to strike. Even more striking, a Clarus Poll finds 64 percent of those surveyed believe that government employees should not be able to join labor unions. My guess is that the longer that the teachers abandon their classrooms to demonstrate at Wisconsin's state capital in Madison and the longer that Democratic senators continue their self-imposed exile in Illinois to stymie Walker's Budget Repair bill, the higher those numbers will climb....
Human Experiment: Labor cookies!
2011-02-01 00:14:00
My friend Nicole pointed me in the direction of a recipe for labor cookies. Hey, why not, right? Maybe I go into labor, and if not I get to eat a bunch of cookies. I modified the original recipe (of course) to double the spices. Labor vibes times TWO!Here's my version: 2 1/2 cup flour 1 1/2 t. baking soda 1.5 t. cinnamon 2 t. ground ginger 1 t. ground cloves 1/2 t. salt 1 t. cayenne pepper 8 T. butter (that's one stick!) 1/2 c. sugar 1 c. brown sugar 1/3 c. molasses 1/4 c. egg whites Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine flour, baking soda and spices and set aside. Cream the butter and sugars together. Add the molasses to the creamed butter, then add the egg whites until combined....
Look good during labor? Yes you can!
2011-01-08 23:37:00
Mothers who primp immediately following the birth of their children have come under recent criticism. Some women take a post-push moment to gloss their lips for their Facebook audience and others really take it to the extreme by bringing stylists to the delivery room. Either way, the practice of postpartum primping is seen as vain.Boston.com recently ran an article about the Facebook and Twitter phenomenon increasing social pressure to look good in those sweaty, euphoric moments after a child's delivery. Reaction was fierce: The moms must be crazy.Well throw me in the pile of crazy because I don't go anywhere without looking my best, and in the labor and delivery ward was and is no exception. However. When a child...
What other states (but not Illinois) are doing to curb labor costs
2011-01-04 21:02:00
Reports the New York Times: Faced with growing budget deficits and restive taxpayers, elected officials from Maine to Alabama, Ohio to Arizona, are pushing new legislation to limit the power of labor unions, particularly those representing government workers, in collective bargaining and politics. State officials from both parties are wrestling with ways to curb the salaries and pensions of government employees, which typically make up a significant percentage of state budgets. On Wednesday, for example, New York's new Democratic governor,Andrew M. Cuomo, is expected to call for a one-year salary freeze for state workers, a move that would save $200 million to $400 million and challenge labor's traditional clout in Albany. Not in Illinois, though. In Wisconsin, its new Republican...
Obama's Labor Dept. to Force Employers to tell Employees They Have a R
2010-12-24 17:50:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Obama's intrusive National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the government regulatory agency responsible for making rules to govern the relationship between employer and employee, has decided that as an employee you are stupid. Worse, the NLRB also decided that it has the power to force your employer to waste its resources holding your hand as an employee and notifying you of your rights to join a union under the National Labor Relations Act. Essentially, this government agency has summarily decided that employers must do the government agency's job for it. What American doesn't understand that they have a basic right to unionize? And for those who don't it is incumbent upon them to learn enough to become...
Majority of Chicago's disabled population estranged from the labor mar
2010-12-23 18:42:00
This week, we've chronicled the plight of disabled people working or trying to work in Chicago. It's certainly not easy. On Tuesday, we showed how people with a disability make substantially less than people who work around them, especially in the most well-to-do neighborhoods. On Wednesday, we showed that only a small percentage of the working-age population that's disabled actually holds down a full-time job.Today, we're looking at how long it's been for people with disabilities since they last had a job. The 2009 American Community Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau can look at this in three different ways: For those who had worked in the last 12 months, those who had worked in the past one to five...

Obama Panders to Union Thugs on Labor Day And Whines A Bit, Too
2010-09-06 23:31:00
-By Warner Todd Huston President Obama dutifully went to Wisconsin today under orders from his union patrons to make a big show of his support for union thugs on Labor Day. The bought and paid for president gave his remarks (text of prepared remarks) as expected but there was a little wrinkle this time. Apparently the poor widdle president is upset at his critics. He whined to his union patrons that his critics "talk about me like a dog." President Obama, I, for one, would never insult dogs like that. Obama: They talk about me like a dog (CNN) - Those following President Obama's prepared remarks during a speech in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Monday were thrown a bit of a curveball...

Whatever Happened to Labor?
2010-09-06 15:02:00
"In a world where labor does exactly what it's told to do, it will be devalued. Obedience is easily replaced, and thus one worker is as good as another. And devalued labor will be replaced by machines or cheaper alternatives. We say we want insightful and brilliant teachers, but then we insist they do their labor precisely according to a manual invented by a committee..." - Whatever Happened to Labor?Seth GodinWhen I read the above quote from Godin, I realized that that is what is wrong with labor (unions) nowadays. They want to be told exactly what to do, Everything has to be systematized and rules and government driven. The current administration is making way too many rules, regulations, mandates....
Worst jobs ever: Happy Labor Day!
2010-09-06 14:05:00
If you think about it, parenting is a pretty disgusting job.  You're always touching something that requires you to scrub your hands for hours.  I can't count the number of times I've giggled at my husband performing a gagging reflex over something that was projected from one of the kids.  I'm amazed that the second I see something unusual on the floor, I don't think twice about asking if it's a turd.  Is this a glamorous job or what?I'm a big fan of the show Dirty Jobs on the Discovery Channel - it makes me feel so much better about the gross parts of my job.  Mike Rowe hosts and interacts with men and women who perform the most disgusting...

Labor Day Weekend Food for Thought
2010-09-03 06:13:00
A few items to ponder over the long weekend, which I hope to expand on next week.More on Street SignsI've been thinking more about street signs--and especially numbering on street signs.  What strikes me is how infrequently block numbers are posted at all.  Every quarter or eighth of a mile on arterial streets is ok when you're driving, because if you miss your turn or turn the wrong way, it doesn't take much effort to double back to where you want to go.  But suppose you're on foot or on bike.  Suddenly making the wrong turn becomes a larger issue.  It's an issue both because of the effort you have to expend to correct it, but also because it will...

The new "hot spot" for cheap labor, America?
2010-08-19 00:19:00
That's how National Public Radio's Steve Inskeep introduced a segment this morning on how an Indian company is looking to locate call centers here in the United States, thanks, in part, to sinking wages. Americans "are open to working at home and working at lower salaries than they were used to," Pramod Bhasin, chief executive from the Indian firm Genpact tells the Financial Times, which broke the story. Turns out, Chicago is one of only a handful of spots on U.S. soil where the Indian company has set up shop. And it's setting its sights on expanding right here in the Prairie State. If the link between wages and food stamp eligibility is any indicator, it's not surprising that the Illinois...
Provisions Added to the FAR Concerning Use of Project Labor Agreements
2010-04-26 22:55:00
By: Joseph A. Hackenbracht On April 13, 2010, the FAR Council published in the Federal Register a Final Rule that adds a new section to the Federal Acquisition Regulation – Subpart 22.5 – Use of Project Labor Agreements for Federal Construction Projects. The Final Rule implements Executive Order 13502, which President Obama signed on February 6, 2009, encouraging Federal agencies to consider the use of a project labor agreement (“PLA”), on large construction projects. Use of project labor agreements by Federal agencies had been curtailed by an Executive Order issued by President Bush in 2001. (See earlier blog article dated February 10, 2009 for more information). As of May 13, 2010, Contracting Officers can include in solicitations for construction projects clauses FAR 52.222-33 and FAR 52.222-34 that will require an offeror to negotiate a PLA and that will “bind the offeror and all subcontractors engaged in construction on the project to comply with...
