The Conservative candidate won with 1,168,738 first and second preference votes, compared with Mr Livingstone?s 1,028,966. Politicians of the Year
2008-05-01 14:00:00 Congratulations to both Joan Burton and Sean Sherlock who received Magill politician of the year awards yesterday. Those of us within the Labour Party are well aware of the work of both Joan and Sean and would agree that these awards are richly deserved. Joan received the TD of the year award and Sean received the One to Watch award. Well done to you both!! Full story here
Labour Party select strong team for Election 2009
2008-04-24 00:17:00 Last week at a very well attended selection convention I was selected to once again stand for the Labour Party in next years local elections in Ward Three electoral area in Waterford City. The selection convention was chaired by Party Leader Eamonn Gilmore and was also attended by Brian O'Shea TD Party Chairperson. It is a great honour for me to be chosen as a candidate for the Labour Party and I look forward to the campaign. I was very heartened by the attendance of members and supporters and the expressions of support I received since I was chosen.Cllr Pat Hayes and Cllr Jack Walsh were also selected on the night to complete the Labour Party's team in Waterford city for the Local Elections 2009. I look forward to working with both Pat and Jack as we continue to work hard and effectively for the people of Waterford. Of course I will be returning to this issue in future posts.

Famous figures deny donations as Labour Party appoints new funding Tsar
2007-12-06 23:54:00 The controversy surrounding the transparency of Labour Party fund-raising was ratcheted up another notch when the Prince of Darkness, a noted non-British citizen of ill-repute, denied being the true donor of several millions of pounds given through numerous proxies. "Whilst it is true that I act through others, especially those whose hands are idle," said the supernatural being who is also known as Beelzebub. "I would never wish to have my name linked to an organisation with the reputation of New Labour. After all I have been a life long Conservative supporter." Despite ongoing reforms to... Will capping union donations cause a civil war within the Labour party?
2007-12-02 22:49:00 Gordon Brown must decide whether he is going to stay in the donorgate frying pan or jump into the trade union capping fire. Either way he's in for a torrid time of it. If he doesn't agree to union capping, then he will have reneged on his comments made in the last few days of this fiasco. If he does agree to cap union donations then he is facing a potential civil war within the party. This post (and comments) over on Labourhome gives us a good indication of just how deep into the mire Gordon could be taking his party. If there is a division of opinion on the Labourhome blog, then this will surely translate to the rest of the party. There is talk of Gordon and Hoon being on the wrong side of the fight to keep union money, and strong hints of looking for an alternative leader. Gordon may have leapt into serious trouble in an attempt to rid himself of his current predicament. A tactical error which could see the Labour party destroy itself in an internal war. This all could have been a...

Democratic Labour Party Candidate ‘Fingered’ In Confidential Me
2007-11-26 13:31:00 A confidential document seen by Barbados Underground (BU) has implicated a Democratic Labour Party candidate nominated to run in the upcoming General Election in some rather murky activities. Should we pay our taxes directly to the Labour party?
2007-11-16 06:21:00 Labour have got some cheek to complain about Lord Ashcroft's donations to the Conservative party:The Government gave £12.8m to the unions (Modernisation Fund). The unions gave £17m in donations to the Labour Party. That?s money from the TAX PAYER to the GOVERNMENT - from the GOVERNMENT to the UNIONS - and from the UNIONS to the LABOUR PARTY.Can anyone spot a link? In fact, wouldn?t it be better to cut out the middle men and pay OUR TAXES directly to the LABOUR PARTY?Fair enough, it could be said that the money given to the unions, by the government on behalf of the tax payer, is different to the money the unions are giving to the Labour party. But why do we the tax payers, need to give the unions £12.8m, when they obviously have £17m to burn on Labour party donations? Can you smell something? Does it smell like a rodent that likes to frequent our sewers?I feel sorry most of all for the union members. They are paying their taxes, some of which is finding its way into donations to the...

Labour Party Conference goes online
2007-11-14 12:51:00 All roads lead to Wexford this weekend for the 62nd Labour Party National Conference. Over 1100 delegates and observers from all over Ireland and abroad will meet in White's Hotel Wexford to debate motions and to formulate policy. There are some very interesting and relevant motions on the agenda which will be debated over the weekend. The Conference will also elect a new National Executive and Party Chairperson. I also notice that the Party will be making good use of the Internet with live streaming of conference sessions, online question and answer sessions and the use of Flickr for hosting photographs of the Conference. The Labour Party is the first Irish political party to use technology in this way to bring the National Conference right to your desktop. Hope you can join us at some stage over the weekend.

Barbados Underground Responds To The Barbados Labour Party Blog
2007-10-29 02:42:00 The following was posted on the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) blog last night. After perusing it we doubted whether the writer was serious in expecting that the public of Barbados would believe that the diatribe would serve to debunk anything. This is the first time we will respond to a BLP organ which has accused BU of being a partisan blog, BLP blog you are entitled to your opinion! We made a few notes in blue which we hope will evoke comments and discussion from the BU family: Pollster Peter Wickham is clearly mistaken when he claims that Prime Minister Owen Arthur has not produced any major improvements in the quality of our governance during his thirteen years in office. Yes, Arthur does have political savvy, this I will acknowledge, but I refuse to accept the other claim. In debunking this piece of foolishness, Wickham is advised to peruse the following: (1) Over the past 13 years the Owen Arthur’s administration has consistently received the commendations of rating agenci...
Another Green Party U- Turn
2007-10-11 20:16:00 Being in government can do strange things to people. Prior to the General Election the Green Party were very vocal in their opposition to the use of Shannon Airport by the US Military, the co-location of private hospitals on the grounds of public hospitals, the destruction of the Tara Valley and the use of electronic voting machines to name but a few. All of these policies fell by the wayside in their pursuit of the ministerial bicycle. Now the latest principle abandoned by the Green Party is their opposition to the use of incineration as a means of waste management. The latest announcement by Green Minister for the Environment John Gormley that Ireland will need two incinerators to deal with its waste must surely rate as another complete u-turn of Green Party policy. This ongoing failure of the Green Party to implement their pre election agenda must surely be an opportunity for the Labour Party.
Joan Burton elected Deputy Leader
2007-10-04 19:43:00 Well the new leadership team is now in place following today's election of Joan Burton as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. Congratulations to Joan and indeed commiserations to Jan. Without a doubt the leadership team of Eamonn Gilmore and Joan Burton will need to hit the ground running with the local and European elections not too far away. For the record the result of the contest for Deputy Leader was as follows:Burton: 1480 53.7%O'Sullivan 1276 46.3%The Labour Party now heads into its Conference in Wexford in November in a buoyant mood. Speaking to party members in Waterford recently there certainly is a mood of confidence with new members continuing to join the party. It is important that we capitalise on this renewed interest in the party in the run up to the local elections which will be the first real test of the Labour Party. It will also be the first real test of the leadership of Eamonn Gilmore and Joan Burton.

Dutch Labour Party will not allow a Referendum on the EU Treaty.
2007-09-26 14:08:00 The Dutch Labour party (PvdA) will not allow its voters a Referendum on the EU Treaty. Their stance exactly mimics that of Gordon Brown and our Labour Party. An opinion poll by Maurice de Hond, indicated that 77% of those questioned believed the cabinet was against a referendum because ministers were afraid the Dutch would again vote 'no'.In a move that looked like he and Gordon Brown shared the same spin doctor, Labour parliamentary leader Jacques Tichelaar said: 'This treaty is fundamentally different to the constitution rejected in 2005.' However the Dutch Labour Party had said it would support a referendum during last year's election campaign - does that sound familiar? Opposition MPs described the decision as 'political suicide'. I hope they are right, the Dutch Labour Party should pay for going back on such a massive election promise - and so should ours.

Gordon Brown's address to labour party conference.
2007-09-24 15:22:00 If you can stand it, you can watch Gordon's address by clicking HERE Rolling comments:. Was Max reading from the Big red book of Labour sleaze?. Little babies and little children. Isn't that sweet?. Didn't Hitler promise German jobs to German workers?. Throw foreign criminals out? not if the EU have anything to say about it.. He's got some neck to mention manifesto commitments. EU?. Red lines my ar*e. Thank God, I thought he may have done a U-turn on this. We've got him now.. This is an election speech. It's a good job he didn't have to travel to an English hospital to get his eye looked at. He would have further to travel because the local A&E has been shut down. And to add insult to injury he would have to pay for the parking.

No influence for Labour Party members in policy making - nothing new there
2007-09-08 11:11:00 When does extending party democracy mean exactly the opposite? When New Labour want to curtail members rights and influence even further.Suggested motion for New Labour CLPs. "We, the undersigned Constituency Labour Party Officers, are alarmed at the proposals in the document 'Extending Party Democracy', that would remove the right of CLP's to send motions to our annual conference. Rank and file Labour Party members must have the right and ability to influence and direct policy within their own party if the party is to have any claim to democratic legitimacy. We have mandated our delegates to oppose any proposals which would threaten this right, and call on all delegates to do the same."Alarmed at last? Bit late now!As I pointed out below..only 30% are delegates or Labour Party Visitors - LP visitors can't go in the main conference hall perhaps because they don't pay enough.10% elected representatives20% Mediaand 40% exhibitor /Commercial/Corporate the Labour Party boasts so yo...
Deputy Leadership Contest
2007-09-05 22:59:00 An interesting contest is underway for the Deputy Leadership of the Labour Party between Joan Burton TD and Jan O'Sullivan TD. Both candidates have a lot to offer as Deputy Leader but of course there can only be one winner. The hustings will hopefully result in an open debate on the future direction of the party and will help members make up their minds. This debate is long overdue and eagerly awaited by party members and supporters. The dates and venues for these hustings are as follows:Dublin, Monday 10th September, Westbury Hotel, 8.00pmMullingar, 11th September, Bloomfield House Hotel, 8.00pmCork, Thursday 13th September, Imperial Hotel, 8.00pmKilkenny, Tuesday 18th September, New Park Hotel, 8.00pmGalway, Thursday 20th September, Flannery's Hotel, Dublin Road, 8.00pmIt will be interesting to hear what each candidate is proposing to bring to the post of Deputy Leader. As we now know Eamonn Gilmore will become party leader and I would like to hear a commitment from both ...
Bruce Golding’s Jamaica Labour Party(JLP) By A Nose From Portia Simps
2007-09-04 05:37:00 Tonight, the early result of the General Election in Jamaica has given the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) 31 seats to the People’s National Party 29 seats. Portia Simpson-Miller in a late evening speech, when the projected result became known has sent her intention to challenge the result. The issue of recounts and candidates which hold dual citizenships will come into focus. If Portia carries out her threat to challenge the result, we may see the PNP continue as a lame duck government for some time to come. Here is what Portia said in what was anticipated to be her concession speech last night: “The election is too close to call,” said Simpson Miller, seeking her first election mandate after replacing retiring Prime Minister P.J. Patterson last year. “As of now we are conceding no victory to the Jamaica Labour Party.” Source: Reuters BU say, shame on you Portia, demit office with grace and let the courts decide the outcome if it has to! This is more like it Eamonn
2007-09-02 17:00:00 Today's statement from Labour Party leadership candidate Eamonn Gilmore that he wants the US military out of Shannon Airport is more of what we expect from our party leadership. In a straight talking, straight to the point speech Eamonn said "I want to see the US military out of Shannon and I do not want to see any Irish facility used for the conduct of the Iraq war" He can't be much more clearer than that.It is refreshing to hear this type of unambiguous statement from a potential party leader. Issues such as the use of Shannon Airport by the US Military do matter and we must take the lead in the campaign to bring this to an end. The Labour Party has been to the forefront of the campaign to end the use of Shannon by the US Military. And now with the sellout by the Green Party on the issue we must continue to lead this campaign. Keep it up Eamonn.
Pat Rabbitte resigns as leader of Labour Party
2007-08-23 16:44:00 It was announced today that Pat Rabbitte has resigned as leader of the Labour Party. Speaking at a press conference this afternoon Pat said that he felt that the beginning of the new Dail term was the right time to step down as Party Leader. Pat has served 5 years as Party Leader, a period that has seen an increase in the number of party councillors and senators however we failed to make the inroads that I believe that Pat Rabbitte's leadership deserved. I believe that the decision to resign today is an unselfish act by Pat Rabbitte who has put the interests of the Labour Party before any self interest. Pat is an excellent parliamentarian and remains an effective Dail representative on behalf of his constituents. He made it quite clear that he felt that by resigning now it would give the new leader plenty of time to organise the party ahead of the next local and European elections. All thoughts now turn to the election of the new party leader. The Labour Party constitution means th...
Crocodile tears being shed for Shannon - Heathrow flights
2007-08-20 00:35:00 Recent protestations by Ministers O'Cuiv and O'Dea regarding the decision by Aer Lingus to terminate flights from Shannon to Heathrow are nothing short of political opportunism. I am not surprised however to see government Ministers and politicians all running for cover following this latest decision by the board of Aer Lingus. Indeed words such as "rebellion and split" as reported in this article are not what you associate with one of the most conservative political parties in Ireland. So when I read of this latest "rebellion" in the cabinet on the Aer Lingus issue I take it with a pinch of salt. In the months preceding the privatisation of Aer Lingus the Labour Party repeatedly warned of the consequences of selling one of our national assets by this government. I don't take any great pleasure in saying "we told you so" when speaking of this latest debacle.
Barbados Labour Party Spin Machinery Moving Into High Gear~Is The Democrati
2007-08-02 09:35:00 Minister Gline “wuk fuh wuk” Clarke, the battled hardened Minister and Owen Arthur loyalist has boldly stated that:- “We do not envisage an increase in bus fares either” he added, “because it is this Government’s belief that public transportation is important; it is this Government’s belief that there is no need to increase fares, and we believe that the Government should provide a subsidy since transport is one of the leading sectors in order to keep the country viable.” Source:Nation Newspaper Over the years the Barbados Labour Party has sent mixed signals on whether there is a plan to increase bus fares in the face of increasing petroleum prices. Barbadians remember when the then Minister of Transport Anthony “Too Silent” Wood indicated in a bold pronouncement that he would propose that bus fares be increased. Little did he know that he was being set-up by his boss, Prime Minister Arthur, to test “the waters&rd...

BreastCheck delayed even further for Waterford?
2007-07-26 16:00:00 Regular readers of this blog will be aware of our ongoing campaign to bring BreastCheck to Waterford. BreastCheck is the national breast cancer screening programme for women between the ages of 50 - 64. Currently the service is available only in certain parts of the country despite repeated broken promises by both BreastCheck and indeed the government that the service would be made available locally. The Labour Party in Waterford has been campaigning to make this service available to women in Waterford City and County for a number of years. As part of this campaign we collected over 4,000 signatures and here on this blog I collected another 700 signatures in an online petition. However it seems this campaign is going to have to go on a bit longer as once again it seems there will be further delays.I received an email this week from BreastCheck via the HSE stating that they are unable to provide a date for the roll out of the service to Waterford. This failure to provide the BreastCh...
The Barbados Labour Party Fails To Deliver On The Important Question Of A R
2007-07-13 12:04:00 The Republic of Barbados - or not?  Last night I blogged about the public opinion battle on the island of Barbados becoming a republic. There are really two arguments in this contest. 1. The head of State should be Bajan. The queen is a relic of a brutal and exploitative past and should be consigned to the garbage bin of history. 2. We’ve done very well under the present arrangement. The British Tourists like to come to a commonwealth state (?). The queen is mostly symbolic anyway Of course there are the rest of us who wonder, is all this fuss really necessary? What will this changeover cost? And what really do we get for the trouble. Of course the passions run high on this one (among the proponents of the the two camps) either you are the hothead or you are the reactionary, and the discussion gets more and more heated with each go around.  Here’s what I propose:  Full Article ...

Quentin Davies Joins the Labour Party
2007-06-26 17:33:00 Quentin Davies the pro-EU, left leaning, Tory MP, has defected to the Labour Party. I think he does not like the way the conservatives are going i.e pushing for a referendum on the so called EU Treaty (Constitution), Oh dear, how sad, never mind.In his letter to Cameron he said: Under your leadership the Conservative Party appears to me to have ceased collectively to believe in anything, or to stand for anything. It has no bedrock. It exists on shifting sands. A sense of mission has been replaced by a PR agenda.Unfortunately he's not far from the truth. Dave needs to grab at least two policies by the scruff of the neck and force them down the media's throat. If he doesn't make a stand soon, he could find himself out of a job.

Historical Mayoral Election in Waterford
2007-06-25 23:38:00 I have just come from an historical meeting of Waterford City Council where we elected Cllr Mary O'Halloran as Mayor of Waterford City. Cllr O'Halloran of Fine Gael will now go down in history as the first female mayor of the city. It is amazing to think that in the long history of the city that haven't had a female mayor before now. She was supported tonight by her Fine Gael colleagues, Labour Party, Fianna Fail, Independents and Sinn Fein. I would like to take this opportunity to wish Mayor O'Halloran well in her new position and hope she enjoys her year in office.
Co-location hospital in WRH not in the best interests of patients
2007-06-23 16:12:00 Interesting to read today that the Board of Tallaght Hospital has agreed to proceed with the colocation project which will see a private hospital built on the grounds of the public hospital at Tallaght. This policy which is being driven by the current FF/PD/Green government will only result in further strengthening the current two tier health system. The Labour Party remains consistent in its opposition to this policy of selling off public lands in our hospitals to private developers to allow for the building of private hospitals. This also applies to the proposal to build a private hospital on the grounds of our own Waterford Regional Hospital. We acknowledge that there are problems in our health system regarding bed capacity however this can be overcome by investing in public beds in our public hospitals inccluding Waterford Regional Hospital. In the words of Labour Party health spokesperson Liz McManus "The Labour Party remains absolutely opposed to policy of providing up to ...
Keep on Blogging
2007-06-20 20:32:00 The political blogosphere seems to have gone very quiet since the general election. In the run up to the election it seemed every candidate was posting on blogs or posting video messages for their constituents. As a result there existed a growing community of political bloggers. However it all seems to have gone very quiet with some notable exceptions such as Eric Byrne and Dominic Hannigan both long term Labour Party bloggers. Lets hope that this is only a temporary blip and that we will continue to see more and more politicians use blogging as a means of communication.

Blair and Labour Party Waste Another £750,000
2007-06-06 09:39:00 If Blair's £1m farewell tour wasn't enough money wasted, according to Scotland Yard the police probe into the cash-for-honours affair has cost more than £750,000 so far it emerged today. And we wonder why there is a constant lack of funding for schools and health care. If Blair, Levy etc are found guilty they should be made to foot the bill for the investigation. I don't see why it should come
Don't blame me I voted Labour!
2007-05-30 13:01:00 "Don't blame me I voted Labour" was a Labour Party slogan a number of years ago. The slogan has once again taken on new meaning following last weeks election. As we wait for Bertie to put together a mix and match government one thing is for sure s that it we are in for another 5 years of a government that is bereft of new ideas and new policies. From a Labour Party point of view we must continue to put forward our own agenda. We must now get back to what we do best i.e working in our local communties and bringing forward new ideas and new policies that represent what the Labour Party stands for. That task must begin immediately.
Waterford voters return a Labour TD once again
2007-05-27 20:46:00 Once again Waterford Labour Party TD Brian O'Shea has been reelected to represent this constituency. Brian has represented Waterford in the Dail since 1989 and in that time he served as Junior Minister on two occasions in the Departments of Health and Agriculture. His reelection not only reflects his own tremendous constituency work but also the work of Labour Party members in Waterford. Over the last number of years local party activists have been involved in various campaigns here in Waterford. Issues such as the Radiotherapy campaign, the campaign to bring Breast Check to Waterford and the campaign for a University in Waterford all remain a priority with the Labour Party in Waterford.

Election too close to call
2007-05-24 18:20:00 With about 5 hours to go to the end of voting it would seem that this election is too close to call. According to the local commentators there will be no change in Waterford with Martin Cullen, John Deasy, Brian O'Shea and Ollie Wilkinson all being elected once again. However I believe there will be a battle royal for that last seat with Sinn Fein's David Cullinane and Fianna Fail's Brendan Kenneally all pushing hard for a seat. Sinn Fein will be very disappointed if they fail to take a seat because as far back as last October / November Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness targeted the Labour seat as a potential gain for that party. Many local commentators felt that this was a tactical mistake by Sinn Fein who only succeeded in rallying Labour Party members and supporters here in Waterford. Not only is this election too close to call nationally but it is also a close election here in Waterford.
