Chocolate Eclairs - A Labour Of Love!
2008-11-30 09:08:00 I must say that today has been one of those days that you have to just love being in the kitchen. I have had the most amazing day. Sunday at home with the kids and Chopper just kicking back, doing our own things, coming together at meal times and basically just relaxing at home. I have been promising everyone that I would make chocolate eclairs for ages. I have been putting it off and putting it off, because of fear. Yes fear, it's like the puff pastry, I just can't bring myself to do it. But today I put that fear aside and pulled out Stephanie Alexander's The Cooks Companion and I did it. I made the Choux Pastry, I made the Pastry Cream with a real vanilla bean, and I made the Ganache for the top. What a process but well worth it. So I can not take any credit for the wonderful recipe but I can take credit for how I turned those magical words into such gorgeous chocolate eclairs. Oh they are so good. The pastry cream so sweet, thick and creamy. The gorgeous smell of that vanilla ...

BBC turns when Labour spins
2008-11-24 10:10:00 BBC says,"Chancellor Alistair Darling is due to announce plans to raise the top rate of income tax in his pre-Budget report. He is expected to say a new 45% rate on earnings over £150,000 will be brought in if Labour win the next election. Such a move would mark the end of New Labour's long-running pledge not to increase people's income tax rates.... BBC political editor Nick Robinson said the increase in the top rate of tax was of "huge symbolic significance", but stressed it would only raise a fraction of the sum needed to get the public finances back in order. The fact that it would only be brought in if Labour won the next election, meant the party would be able to claim it had not broken its 2005 election promise not to increase income tax rates. "Why is the BBC publicising Labour spin? Their tax pledge was a trick. They did somteing worse than raising income tax They raised National Insurance contributions by 2%; 1% for both employeees and employers. They said it was to fina...

New Labour old shari'a
2008-08-29 17:14:00 The Christian Institute says, on Friday, 29 August 2008'Councillors in Tower Hamlets, East London, have been told not to eat in town hall meetings during the Muslim month of Ramadan. But the same council has renamed a staff Christmas party as a ?festive meal? and banned Guy Fawkes at bonfire night. All elected councillors have been sent an email asking them to support Ramadam by not eating during daylight hours.Special arrangements have also been made to disrupt council meetings to allow for Muslim prayer. The move has led to accusations that the Labour-run council is favouring one religion over others.Councillor Stephanie Eaton, leader of the Liberal Democrat group, said: ?I was rather disconcerted to see that the arrangements put in place for Ramadan, which we support for Muslim colleagues, have been imposed upon all councillors.?We object to the request that non-Muslim councillors observe the fasting rules for Ramadan. This sends out the wrong message to our community.?'

The public mood in Britain is still (just) with the parties of the Left.
2008-08-09 19:35:00 Americans and others who live in two party democracies must be puzzled by the political scene in Britain. Ever since the Liberal Democrats started to gain significant numbers of parliamentary seats (46 in 1997, 52 in 2001 and 62 in 2005) we have had a three party system across the whole of Great Britain. If ...
Will David Cameron Now Eschew The Centre Ground?
2008-07-04 06:22:00 The political genius of Tony Blair, and unquestionably the main reason that he won three successive British General Elections, was that he colonised the centre ground. The traditional rhetoric of British politics was always predicated on the ideological divide between ?Left? (Labour) and ?Right? (Conservatives). In essence those on the left were socialists who believed ...
Populus poll gives 20 point Conservative lead.
2008-06-09 23:55:00 From the Times:Public support for Labour and Gordon Brown continues to plunge to new lows with the Prime Minister's leadership rating falling to a level even below that suffered by Iain Duncan Smith according to a new poll for The Times.Labour?s rating has dropped by 4 points since early May to 25 per cent, with the Conservatives up 5 points to 45 per cent. This is by far the worst Labour position since 1997 and the best Tory one. The Liberal Democrats are up one point at 20 per cent, according to the Populus poll. Only three-fifths of those who voted Labour in 2005 say they would do so now, compared with 95 per cent of Tories staying loyal. Almost one in five of those who voted Labour in 2005 say they would vote Tory in an election now. Moreover, Mr Brown has lost the benefit of the doubt of voters. His leader rating (on a 0 to 10 scale of very bad to very good) has fallen for the fifth time running, down from a peak of 5.49 last July to 3.9 now. This is lower any of the other sev...

Uk Troops to be out of Iraq by end of year - ish.
2008-06-09 23:03:00 The BBC reports:The final withdrawal of British troops from Iraq could be announced by the end of the year.So what are they saying? Well, they are not saying it will be announced, only that it could. And even then they are saying that the announcement could be made by the end of the year - NOT that troops could be withdrawn by the end of the year. The government could announce that troops will be withdrawn in five years time - by the end of the year. I've got to ask - are the government paying the BBC to come out with this crap to try and save Gordon Brown's neck? Also in the news:Moon monkeys could fly out of my arse by the end of the year.My pear tree could produce solid gold pears by the end of the year.Gordon Brown could make a decision by the end of the year.Guido Fawkes could link to me by the end of the year.Nick Clegg could explain his position on the Lisbon Treaty by the end of the year.UPDATE: Guido has linked to me - I guess the BBC could be right after all. Cheers Guido!

Stuart Wheeler takes Government to court over Lisbon Treaty.
2008-06-09 08:00:00 Stuart Wheeler gets his day in court today. He intends to prove that Gordon Brown's refusal to allow us the referendum his government promised in their manifesto is:"Not only immoral but illegal, too . "This was a referendum the people of Britain were promised well before the last election, during it, and after it. "But instead of fulfilling that promise, Gordon Brown has tried to push the Constitution in via the back door by rebranding a document and presenting it as a completely different text. "This is a ridiculous argument. Leaders across Europe - including Valery Giscard d'Estaing, the author of the EU Constitution - have acknowledged, indeed almost gloated about the fact, that the Treaty is the Constitution in all but name. "Furthermore, regardless of what name it is given, the vast majority of the British public want a referendum on this Treaty as demonstrated by the results of a YouGov poll last month."I had to laugh at the response from the Foreign Office spokesman: "Hard...

Labour MPs warn of rebellion - again (Planning).
2008-06-05 20:04:00 How long does it take for a government to realise that its policies are a load of old "pony". It's not as if there haven't been any obvious signs:Your party is polling lower than any time in its history. You lose a safe seat up north by a massive swing. The police are taking part in mass demonstrations.Your Leader as an approval rating is lower than a snake's jake. You are becoming dizzy from performing U-turns.Your grass root supporters give you two weeks to get your sh*t in one sock or step down. You face a summer of industrial action.Your Cabinet ministers are jockeying to replace you.Your MPs are rebelling week in week out - if it gets any worse they will start calling Brown "Darth" as he seems to spend most of his time fighting the rebellion.I could go on but I'm getting bored.Anyway, this brings me to today's threat of a rebellion from the Labour backbenchers. MPs are worried that removing the need for ministerial input into planning will make the system less accountable. No ...

Gordon Brown's pork pies to parliament exposed.
2008-06-04 19:29:00 Since Gordon Brown came to power he has consistently dodged questions put to him in PMQs by spewing out an endless stream of Tractor production figures. The thing is, we all know that a vast majority of them are total and utter bullsh*t. Cameron was recently asked why he allows Brown get away with it. Well it looks like David has taken that to heart and will now expose Brown's dodgy figures. From the Conservative party website (If it's in red it's me):Mr. Brown's claim that the majority of drivers will benefit from changes to the road tax has been exposed as an error (polite parliamentary way of saying he's a lying git).Brown's claim, made in Prime Minister's Questions, contradicts previous Government statements:- In Alistair Darling's Budget Red Book, it was stated: "As a result of these reforms, the majority of motorists will be better or no worse off in 2009."- Treasury figures from April indicate that 81% of cars will be worse off (shocker!)after the changes to Vehicle Ex...

Personal Carbon Credits - Are they mad?
2008-05-27 09:21:00 Just when you thought that Labour could not get any more unpopular, up pops the idea of introducing Personal Carbon Credits. I hate this idea on so many levels it's hard to know where to begin. For a start it winds me up when MPs talk about rationing our carbon. Who the hell do they think they are telling us how much fuel we can use? I could understand it if there was a war on and we had a shortage, but this is ridiculous.MPs involved in recommending this madness say it will help fight climate change. I would like to point out that the temperature has actually dropped over the last decade and scientists are now saying it will drop again over the next decade. So do the MPs think that Carbon Rationing will warm the planet up? I'm confused. Then of course there's the cost. Estimated at £2bn to set up (that will be at least £6bn then) and a further £2bn to run each year (again let's call that £6bn). Where is this money going to come from? You guessed it - out of our pockets as bloody...

Gordon Brown - It's NOT the economy stupid.
2008-05-26 10:49:00 In the aftermath of the local elections and the Crewe and Nantwich by-election, Labour Ministers are putting a spin their devastatingly poor results. They say it is all down to the economy stupid - the credit crunch - it's not their fault. What a complete and utter load of rubbish. It has very little to do with the economy - it's all down to Labour policy.Where should we start? How many voters did Labour lose over the Lisbon Treaty? How many for the closing of our post offices? How many for the shutting down our local A&E wards? How many for closing our local Schools? How many for shutting down our local Maternity Wards? How many for Shutting our local Police Stations at night? How many for stealth taxes? How many for the 10p tax fiasco? How many for uncontrolled immigration? How many for social decay? How many for the loss of 25 million bank account details? How many for the threat of bin tax? How many for the threat of road charging? How many for letting out prisoners early ...

This is your pilot Gordon Brown speaking.
2008-05-25 14:38:00 John Prescott came up with a strange analogy to defend Gordon Brown's sullen demeanour on the Andrew Marr show this morning: "When you get on an aeroplane, do you go and look in the cockpit to see if the pilot is smiling".Imagine the situation:Hullo, this is the pilot speaking. We have been informed that our arrival in New York has been delayed. This nothing to do with us, this kind of delay is happening around the world and I'm afraid it's out of my hands. Now, normally this is the point where I would say that there's no need for concern.... but, you see, ah - now how shall I put this? You know that we normally carry enough fuel in reserve for occasions like this? Well erm, we haven't today. Not my fault, you see - we've run out of money. Gordon Brown - Leadership challenge to be announced tonight?
2008-05-24 23:27:00 There are several opportunities for a leadership challenge to be mounted against Gordon Brown over the next 18 months. Tonight is the first. Striking while the iron is hot would see a challenge announced in time for the Sunday papers. Some will think this wild speculation, but I remember that months ago Labour MPs were telling the press (off the record) that Brown had until May to turn things around. He most definitely has not. There are Labour MPs and Ministers who have been preparing for months for just the kind of collapse we have witnessed this month. So watch this space. Daily Mirror - Has the pro-Labour tide turned?
2008-05-19 12:17:00 I was amazed to read an article in today's Daily Mirror that attacked the Labour "Tory toff" campaign being fought in Crewe and Nantwich. As Tony Parsons points out: "Gwyneth Dunwoody would never have run such a shallow campaign." Such critique of Labour's campaign comes as a welcome surprise after reading Brian Reade's pathetic article in the same paper last week. So I've got to ask: Are the Mirror going the way of the Sun in their support for Cameron's Conservatives? Has the Mirror's pro-Labour tide turned? Here is a snippet from Tony's article:As Labour supporters shrieked about rich Tories in Bentleys, they did not seem to have the faintest idea that Bentley has provided generations of Crewe families with work. In Crewe, a Bentley is a potent symbol of highly skilled, proud working men and a brand recognised around the world. Pointing self-righteous fingers might have worked elsewhere, but using a Bentley as an example of privilege in Crewe is thick. But there are other wo...

Another Sour Sunday for Gordon Brown.
2008-05-11 08:59:00 The first thing Gordon Brown will think when he wakes up this morning will be: "today can't be as bad as last Sunday". He will be wrong, today will be one hell of a sour Sunday. First of all he will read about John Prescott claiming that he urged Tony Blair to sack him. Then he will read about the ICM survey for the Mail on Sunday which puts the Tories on 43%, Labour on 39% and the Liberal Democrats on 16% in the Crewe and Nantwich by-election. If he can find the will to read on he will discover that when Labour voters were asked who would make the best Prime Minister, 41% said Cameron and only 38% backed Brown. OMG - when your own supporters prefer the opposition's leadership to yours, you should surely start to seriously consider a career change.Believe it or not, it gets worse. According to Louise Bagshawe post on ConservativeHomes CentreRight section, Frank Field has threatened Brown with "no confidence" over 10p tax. And she thinks he is deadly serious. The money is sitting in a non-interest making (escrow) account five months after Scotland Yard told the Labour party that: "the donated money was no longer an issue for the police".Tory frontbencher Chris Grayling said:"This was clearly another attempt by Labour to bury bad news. Without doubt Brown's dithering, poor choice of policy and general incompetence has caused Labour to lose a great amount of support. But, that lost support has not been to the advantage of the Lib Dems. Ever since the highly successful Conservative party conference last year, David Cameron has led his party to historic popularity.
