Read this report from Reuters retelling what an Arabic language paper said Laing’s Dubai-based owner is thinking …. Emaar Properties, the largest Arab developer by market value, is seeking opportunities in the United States and Europe where property prices have become “attractive”, a newspaper said, citing the chairman. “A property whose price was $100 in the U.S., now costs $10 … and we expect it to become $5,” Mohamed Alabbar told Kuwait’s al-Qabas daily in an interview. The newspaper did not specify what opportunities the Dubai-based company was seeking and a spokesman for Emaar could not immediately comment. Emaar, which owns U.S. company John Laing Homes, has consultants in the U.S. working on developing low-cost residential units at no more than $12,000 a piece, Alabbar said, according to the paper.

2008-02-03 21:47:00 The saturated palette of Bauhaus artist Joseph Albers and his "Homage to the Square" paintings were Laing's starting point. You could see the Albers influence in the first look, an easy dress sewn together from two squares of silk, decorated with a block of Swarovski crystals. Loose-fitting tank dresses in vivid shades of orange and pink, with rectangles of fabric fluttering up and down the side seams, were a less literal take on the concept. The theme, though, threatened to get the best of the designer with the sleeveless dresses with nipped waists and slashes of extra fabric suspended from rivets at the neckline or waist; these, like the "skirt-pants" (which, as their name suggests, appeared to be slacks from the front and a long skirt from the rear) looked overdesigned. A year and a half ago – “the good old days” in real estate life – Laing from Newport Beach was sold to Emaar, a real estate giant from Dubai for a billion bucks. You think that such generous pricing for a builder in tough markets like California and Colorado would be available today when U.S. homebuilder stocks, as a comparison, have been roughly sliced in half since that sale? So I needed to know: What did Webb and the investor group that owned Laing know? Builder Laing’s profit margin falls to 7% from 18%
2007-11-08 02:13:00 O.C. builder John Laing, which primarily works in California and Colorado, is owned by Emaar, an international real estate company from the United Arab Emirates. Since Emaar stock publicly trades, we get peeks into Laing’s operations now and then. This week Emaar told investors that Laing’s operating profit margins (before land write-offs) were 7% in the first nine months of ‘07 vs. 18% in ‘06. And what did Laing write down on its land holdings? $104 million worth. Larry Webb, Laing’s top local exec, told me that “the business has been tough on everybody.” Webb says as a unit chief of a larger multinational corporation he can’t speak to financial specifics. But he admits that the speed and steepness of this dropped surprised him: “This credit crunch will only get bigger and bigger before it gets better.” Still he’s hoping for a turnabout in mid-to-late 2008, especially in more traditionally attractive markets like Orange County.
