For the last 9 months, I have called Chiang Mai, Thailand home. Today--May 12th--a sense of anxious accomplishment fills me as I begin my return trip to America. I wouldn't say I am ready to leave this beautiful country nor am I ready to leave the friends and influential people I have had the pleasure to be with; but, I am ready to return to Wisconsin and try and pass on some of what I have gained from Northern Thailand.I have spent second semester at Chiang Mai University studying Introductory Photography with Ajarn Por. It has been an extremely rewarding experience, and I ended up putting many more hours into it than I had originally anticipated. I am deeply grateful to Ajarn Por for his instruction and encouragement throughout the semester. Through the experience of photography I have had the chance to interact with a number of Thai people that I probably would not have met without a camera in my hand and the courage to ask "????????????? (Can I take your photo?)": street mus...
A Day Trip to Lamphun
2007-11-14 10:30:00
Aacaan Siddhichai--my host--and I took at day trip to Lamphun last Saturday. By car, it is about 45 minutes from Chiang Mai city. Lampun was once the center of the Haripunchai Kingdom that was ruled by Queen Chama Thewi and founded in 680 AD--it claims to be the oldest existing city in Thailand. The Chamdhevi dynasty was able to maintain independence from outside rule until 1932 when Thailand began a democratic country. Today, Lamphun remains a fairly quiet provincial capital. Being so close to Chiang Mai, it is a nice place to retreat to. The day that Aacaan Siddhichai and I went was beautiful--blue skies and a cool breeze. We stopped along the Highway 106 on the way to Lamphun to browse through a number of teak wood shops. I bought a present for Mother and Father, but they'll just have to wait to see what it is.Our first stop in Lampun was Wat Phrathat Hariphunchai. This temple was built on the site of Queen Chama Thewi's palace in 1044 AD. Khrubaa Siwichai--one of Nort...

Another ancient site related to the old history of the town is Wat Phra Yun . The Ku Chang-Ku Mah Chedi at the temple is surrounded on four directions by standing statues. The Chedi itself is cylinder-shaped and commemorates Queen Chamthewi's war elephant and her son's steed.Technorati Tags: Lamphun/Wat Phra Yun/ancient/thailand/Wat

Wat Phrathat Hariphunchai was built in the reign of King Athittayarat of the Raman dynasty in 897. Later on in 1433 during the reign of King Tilokraj, the King of Chiang Mai, it was repaired and renewed ; five new pagodas in the Srilanka style were built and added. The pagodas enshrine the ashes of the Lord Buddha. Religious ceremonies of the province are performed here. The Phrathat Hariphunchai Pagoda has a nine-tiered umbrella made of gold weighing about 6500 grams. The square-shaped base of the 46-meter-high gold-topped chedi in the center of the courtyard is the oldest structure in the temple. Ten centuries younger world. The sala was restored in 1915 after it was damaged by fire. Technorati tags : Lamphun /thai wat /Thailand /Wat Phra That Hariphunchai /Wat
