Hacker Shuts Down Phoenix Lander Website
2008-05-31 21:42:00 Overnight, a hacker got into the Mars Phoenix Lander at the University of Arizona and changed the mission page to his signature with a link pointing to some overseas website. This kind of behavior is totally unacceptable. This website is very popular now, and is providing us with the most up to date information about the Phoenix lander findings. If you remember correctly, the last update was that there may be a possibility of water-ice just barely under the surface of the retrorocket blast zone. I don't know about anyone else, but I have been feverishly checking the mission page to see if that was in fact water-ice or just rock. However, some foreign moron hacked the page, robbing the whole world of real-time mission data we've come to expect.Hackers like this are just total scum. The thing that makes me mad is that if you are smart enough to hack a website like this, you should at least be smart enough to understand what it's trying to do. And why did you do it? For emails? Spam?...

Phoenix Lander Tweets From Mars
2008-05-31 17:26:00 Spotting the power of Twitter to keep people up-to-date in a concise format, scientists at NASA have programmed the Phoenix Mars lander to send Tweets with updates from the red planet. The New York Times’ Kenneth Chang writes about the Phoenix Mars lander using Tweeter: Whoever thought a NASA spacecraft could be so adept at social networking and Web 2.0? For users of Twitter, a Web microblogging service, the Phoenix Mars lander has been sending pithy news “tweets” to the cellphones and computers of interested “followers.” Excellent use for this new technology. Cavern Lander - Tech Demo 1
2008-03-25 12:38:00 Over the Easter weekend I've had a browse through the code for "Cavern Lander", which started as an experiment with the RetroRoids code to see how much work it would take to add in gravity effects.I'd got it to a point where it pretty much worked before a large dose of the curse of the hobby programmer known as "real life" stepped in and curtailed my coding activities for a couple of weeks. To get myself back up to speed I decided to pick up the code again - and after sorting out some niggling bugs and cleaning the code up further I'd got a stable code-base to build the game on.I'm not counting this as a proper demo release purely because the game is so early in its development - but as a technical demo to see how a gravity game would work I think it does its job quite well. The initial feedback has been positive too so I'll spend some more time on the game over the next couple of weeks and see what I end up with. The game itself plays a bit like a cross between Lander, Thrust and...

X-Prize Lunar Lander Competition
2007-12-05 00:58:00 To paraphrase Austin Powers - "Yay Capitalism!" I think there is a remarkable group of efforts going on right now in the world of space technologies. And all of it is being spearheaded by private companies. Not by huge governments. Where NASA is struggling to set a roadmap and plan for hundreds of different missions, here we have small nimble private corporations creating solutions to problems. Here is Armadillo Aerospace attempting to capture the Lunar Lander X-Prize. > > > They're sponsored by nVidia, which to me seems a cool corporate investment. Google is in the act as well. > > > The next couple of decades could be very interesting. I would like to wholeheartedly encourage the multitude of high-tech billionaires that read the Rivet to invest in the emerging private space race. C'mon you already have 3 Ferraris, what's left? How about a moon base. Related articles: SpaceX Flight Review

Mars Phoenix Lander
2007-11-11 23:29:00 My thoughts frequently drift to the Mars Phoenix Lander, which at this moment in time, is hurdling through space at astounding speed to the red planet Mars. The Phoenix will once for all run definitive tests on the orangish-red soils of our less than hospitable neighbor. In honor of my thoughts and wishes for the Phoenix team, I am creating a countdown clock until the day Phoenix lands. Once it lands, who knows what it will find out about the organic (or inorganic) history of Mars' geology.Countdown to Mars Phoenix Lander touchdown!

News round-up after event seven: Historic Tour of Flanders
2007-09-13 00:00:00 Click on the picture to enlarge Welcome to the latest issue for 2007 of the post-event news and gossip update for the Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship. The Tour of Flanders wrapped up the asphalt element of the season and produced some fabulous battles for the top places, carried out in a great spirit of sportsmanship. As ever, the thrash around the closed roads of Belgium was a popular and challenging event and remains a worthy round of the championship. News Chris Browne and Ali Cornwell were a late entry after a big rush to rebuild their Escort after an accident in Ypres at the end of June. The car was finally finished in Belgium at 1am on Saturday morning after nine weeks of work. Unfortunately, a gearbox problem (see below) cost them time early on, but they took a top ten finish. After some pretty torrid luck in recent times, Mike Barratt and Jody Watson were pleased with their event, even though it finally ended in a non-finish for the Mini Cooper S....

Round seven of the 2007 Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship was a cracking event on the slippery asphalt of the Flanders region and many crews explored ditches. However, with title contenders David Stokes/Guy Weaver and Dessie Nutt/Geraldine McBride both winning their categories, the overall title will only be settled on the final round in Yorkshire. Category 1 Nutt/McBride put their Porsche 911 into control of category 1 right from the start and were never really troubled as they turned in a typically slick performance. The Porsche ran like clockwork and a commanding victory means that ...

Secrets of Ramadan | Shems Friedlander
2007-09-08 17:21:00 Be not as those who say, we hear, and they hear not. Lo! the worst of beasts in the sight of God are the deaf and the dumb - who understand not. - The Quran 8:21-22Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting. One month of fasting. If all we do is not eat, then our only benefit is that we?ll be hungry. There are many secrets to Ramadan. Each time we do this fast, some secrets may be revealed to us.Fasting is the only worship of Allah done in total secrecy. Only Allah knows. ? We pray openly in front of other people, it is seen. When we give charity, we give it out. But fasting is a secret between each person and Allah. And only Allah knows whether you do it or don?t do it. You can stay home and eat three meals a day and tell people you?re fasting. Nobody knows. Only Allah knows. And you know. But fasting from food is just a small part of Ramadan. We have to fast from our anger. We have to fact from being greedy, being unkind, being unfriendly. We have to have a fast of speech. Only say th...
Tasmanian or Queenslander? Either way it wasn?t a bud.
2007-09-08 13:56:00 The Internet is a wonderful place. I was worried because my Tasmanian Eucalyptus (Citriodora) seedling had lost its little red bud. It turned out upon inquiry that I didn't have a Tasmanian Eucalyptus (Citriodora) and that whatever I had, it didn't have a red bud to begin with! I had searched on the Internet and found a lot of information about Eucalyptus but not the specific question I wanted. Then I found a message board dedicated to Eucalyptus - Yes, dedicated to Eucalyptus! I'm not knocking it; just marvelling at it! - The Hardy Eucalyptus Board (http://members3.boardhost.com/-eucalyptus) and asked the question that was plaguing me. I posted my message last night and when I checked the board this morning, like a child checking under its pillow for the tooth fairy, a guy called Gus had posted a response! His opinion (and of course this is where you have to be careful when you?re getting advice from the Internet) was that the red ?bud? that I saw was in fact the outer layer (...

The closed roads of the Roeselare region of Flanders in Belgium provide a unique challenge for the crews and the trip across the channel is always a popular event on the BHRC schedule. With only the Trackrod Historic Rally to follow Flanders, the championship battle is finely poised. Current overall championship leaders David Stokes and Guy Weaver will be seeking maximum points in their Escort Mk1, but they know that good results for their two major rivals will keep the title race wide open when they head to Yorkshire in early October. With six strong scores already recorded, Stokes/Weaver really need to win category 2 to improve their overall total as final positions ...

Who wouldn't fully support the idea of lowering crime rates, making the streets safer, having fewer murders against civilians and police officers? Even if it takes some of my hard-earned taxpayer dollars, I consider it a worthwhile investment if these dollars went to improving DNA data bases so we could find repeat offenders. I would consider it worthwhile if these dollars went to funding domestic violence services, to better police training and resources, to gang interdiction programs, to resources for victims of violence....

And with its hybrid version, it has become a trendsetter in its class. And for the 2008 model year, the Highlander Hybrid was given more ammo to make it the best in its class.
