Plants For Landscaping - Three Important Considerations For A Great Design
2008-06-08 04:54:00 Where does one begin when selecting plants for landscaping? There are a few main factors that should be considered to not only attain a beautiful planting design, but also one that has plant material that will flourish over time. Here are some important things to consider: Sun and Shade Conditions I list this first, because a plant must be located in an area where it receives the required amount of sun or shade. If not, at the least it won't perform well and at the worst, it won't survive at all. We have all seen plants that look dried out and even burnt as well as those that are spindly looking and weak. When a plant's requirement states that it needs sun, typically that means four hours or more. If a plant is a shade lover, then it should get no more than four hours of shade. The amount of hours of sun or shade does not have to be continuous; it can be filtered throughout the day. Plant Sizes Understand and know how tall and wide a landscape plant will get. That lovely plant th...

Our Perennial Flower Garden
2008-06-05 21:14:00 We created a large perennial flower garden in our front yard when we built the new house. Over the last two summers we've been slowly adding plants to the garden. This summer we also added a concrete bird bath which our son finds rather amusing. This summer we also added a few petunias to add some color. Finally things are starting to blossom and give us some nice flowers to look at. My wife is a big fan of purple and pink flowers so most of the flowers we've planted are that color. I've managed to get a couple of yellow and white things in because I want to see lots of different things. In addition to the flowers we've also planted a few strawberry plants, some chives and rosemary. The great thing about planting perennials is not having to plant these year after year. I hate the idea of buying a bunch of plants that are going to die off. I'm sure in a few years this garden will be full of great plants and really be self-sustained.Tags: home improvement, home improvement blog, pe...
Hydroseeding Lawn Update
2008-06-05 20:58:00 Two weeks ago we had a small area in our lawn hydro seeded. Finally today when I checked on it I see that the seed has germinated and the grass is about 2 inches tall. I've been a bit disappointed in how fast the seed started but the reality is the weather has been awful. The last two weeks has been hot and dry around here which is opposite of what you need for good grass growing. It's been so dry around here our back yard grass looks like it typically does in the heat of August so I really should be glad this seed even came up. I'm looking forward to seeing how this grass grows over the next year or so compared to the grass we planted by hand. I'm also curious to see how well this grass roots into the sub-grade because I didn't really prepare it as well as I wanted to. I'll post another update in a few weeks to let you know how our new hydro seeded grass is coming along.Tags: home improvement, home improvement blog, hydroseeding
Lawn Core Aeration
2008-06-05 16:42:00 What is Lawn Aeration?Aerating a lawn is a simple process of removing small cores of soil and grass to allow air, water and nutrients into the root zone. Another way of aerating a lawn is to use a spike aerator that punches spikes into the lawn to make small holes. However, this method isn't considered as effective as core aerating. What are the Benefits of Aerating Your Lawn? The biggest benefit to aerating your lawn is allow sufficient oxygen to reach the grass roots. Heavy soil compaction severely reduces the pore space around grass roots which limits the amount of oxygen in that region. Roots require oxygen to grow and absorb water and nutrients. Core aeration benefits lawns by:Increasing the activity of soil microorganisms that decompose thatchEnhancing water infiltration from rainfall and irrigationImproving root growthIncreasing water, oxygen and nutrient movement in the root zoneHelping to prevent run off of fertilizers and pesticidesHow do you determine if your lawn needs ae...
John Deere Plug Aerator Update
2008-05-28 03:02:00 Several weeks ago I wrote about the new John Deere plug aerator that I ordered. It seems as though there has been a glitch in the order. I must confess it seems as though the error was on my side and not the supplier although I can't see anyway I could have made this error...but I'm a big boy and I can admit when I'm wrong. Apparently I ordered the spike aerator and not the plug aerator. NOT GOOD! The spike aerator really doesn't do what I want.Anyway, the supplier has graciously agreed to track down a plug aerator and only charge me the difference in the correct price. They are certainly going above and beyond on this matter and I truly appreciate it. I'll be sure to share with you this great site for ordering genuine John Deere products once I get all this straightened out.Tags: home improvement, home improvement blog

Seamless Aluminum Gutters
2008-05-22 22:57:00 Last week I had seamless aluminum gutters installed on the garage. When the house was first built I had them installed on the main house but I skipped on the garage to save some money. The reason I decided to put them on the garage was really two fold. The first was to keep the water away from the garage and keep the water from destroying the garden alongside the garage. The second reason was, I plan on installing a couple of rain barrels at some point and the extra water will come in handy. Both times I've hired the same gutter contractor to do the work and they always do a nice job. I like seamless gutters for a couple of reasons. First off they don't leak at joints and they are much "tougher" in my opinion. Secondly when they are installed right they actually look like a piece of molding from the ground level at a distance. As you can see in the close up photo, the gutters are pretty strong after all the supports are screwed into the fascia board. Each of those horizontal support...
Hydroseeding Part of Our Lawn
2008-05-21 23:12:00 Today the Hydroseeding contractor came and sprayed a small area in our back yard that I've had trouble getting grass to grow. As you can see in the picture the area that is bright green was sprayed with a combination of seed, water, fertilizer and paper mulch (recycled newspaper).I prepared the area by raking it to loosen the top layer of soil and remove small rocks and twigs. It only took them about 10 minutes to do the job. I lucked out by having a neighbor that was having the entire back yard done so they were willing to spray my small 500 sq. ft. area.Hydroseeding ranges from about 5 cents to 10 cents a square foot. My small 500 sq. ft. area only cost me $25 so I thought it was well worth it. I didn't take a picture of the truck today but it was pretty similar to the one in the attached photo. Hopefully we'll have some nice grass in a few weeks and then I'll be sold on hydroseeding.Tags: home improvement, home improvement blog, hydroseeding
Hydroseeding
2008-05-20 02:57:00 We have a patch of lawn out back that I've not been able to get grass to grow on. I've tried planting it a couple times and it just doesn't seem to want to grow. One of my neighbors is having a Hydroseeding Contractor re-seed his lawn later this week so I'm going to have the hydroseeder stop by and squirt my small area out back.Hydroseeding is a pretty simple yet extremely effective way of seeding new lawns. Hydroseeding involves mixing, water, seed, fertilizer and mulch into a slurry type mixture and then spraying it onto the soil as shown in the picture. The mixture promotes quicker germination and in most cases quicker thicker growth. The water serves two purposes, first it acts as a carrier for the seed, fertilizer and mulch. Secondly it helps the seed germinate. You can even have "pre-germinated" seeds used if you're short on time late in the fall. The mixture typically uses a high phosphorus starter fertilizer to promote good strong root growth. The mulch is typically a pa...

Green Grass
2008-05-09 22:52:00 So far this spring our grass seems to be doing VERY well. Last year (first growing season for the new lawn) the lawn just never really grew very well. It wasn't very green, didn't grow very fast and overall seemed to be struggling to stay alive. So last fall we had our soil tested and found out that our soil was very acidic and lacking in some important nutrients that grass needs to grow well. The biggest thing our soil needed was lime in order to "sweeten" the soil and increase the pH. We also had to choose the correct fertilizer based on the soil report.I think the combination of the lime and fertilizer that we applied has worked wonders for the grass. As you can see it's very green and it appears to be growing in much thicker. I'm hoping that the lawn will establish itself much better this summer so we won't have to rely on fertilizers as much.Tags: home improvement, home improvement blog

Proper Edging of Flower Beds
2008-05-03 03:35:00 The easiest way to edge a flower bed is by using a simple half moon edger. This tool is used to cut the sod along any shaped flower bed. You simply work your way along any line you want and use the tool to cut the sod. By cutting the sod along a nice clean line you are cutting the roots. As you can see in the photo, you want that cut edge of the sod to remain exposed. This prevents the grass from working its way into the flower bed. When you put your mulch in the flower bed make sure you taper the thickness down as you approach the sod edge. If you keep the roots exposed of the sod then they won't invade the flower bed.The half moon edger is very easy to use. When you're creating a flower bed you can use a rope or garden hose to lay out a nice curved design. Then all you have to do is follow that curved design around and cut the sod with the edger. This is a really easy home improvement project that will spice up your flower beds. To maintain that nice edge just use your string tri...

Make Your Home Beautiful With Landscaping
2008-04-21 05:21:00 Planting done near to the house foundation, is of great importance because it may make or break the appearance of the home as it is seen from the street. Yet, it is often done with little understanding of the problems involved; disappointing results are all too common. There will always be differences of opinion as to the kinds of plants to be used. Some prefer narrow-leaved evergreens, some want flowering shrubs, and still others use a combination of the two. Narrow-leaved evergreens will provide green color through the year with some variation in the different varieties. Flowering shrubs will have bare stems in winter, some of which are very colorful, but will give an informal effect, as well as life and color to the planting during the summer. Broad-leaved evergreens, where they may be grown successfully, will be green throughout the year and give some flower color in spring. With these facts in mind each home owner should use the plants of his choice. Pit the Planting to Style ...

Whether you have a large yard or even just a small piece of yard off a backyard patio, the options for landscaping are endless. But before you head out to the local home and garden market for shrubbery and lawn enhancements, you should examine exactly what type of landscaping you wish to have and the maintenance factor that will come with your new yard. There are many places to search for outdoor landscaping ideas if you are new to this type of development. Local home and garden centers are a great place to start if you prefer to implement it yourself rather than hire a professional landscaping service. The Internet has a huge online resource of information for anyone that is a beginner or for someone who is knowledgeable in landscaping but just needs a few new and creative ideas for their ho...

Simple Rules for Landscaping to Sell Your Home
2008-03-01 16:47:00 We all like easy answers, preferably with a short list. That's why titles like "Five Easy Ways to Make Millions" seem to sell so well. With that in mind, let me provide a few very simple rules of thumb for staging your Silicon Valley home to sell in any real estate market. But let me warn you: I'm going to be painfully, brutally blunt. The first rule for "staging your home to sell" is the topic of today's post and it involves landscaping and curb appeal. The front of the house needs to look great. Seriously. If the front doesn't look wonderful (or at least really good), the buyer will never go inside to see how great your home is. Especially now, when the majority of homes are not selling. Here's Mary Pope-Handy's "Simple Rules for Landscaping to Sell Your Home": Get rid of juniper. I'm not kidding. And ivy too, while you are at it. These two plants are hated by most buyers and tend to give them the sense of "if they...
Consider your landscaping
2008-02-26 21:40:00 In this article Peg Guinta, CRP, Projects Director for RIS Consulting Group, gives some guidelines for taking that curb appeal from average to super. It's no wonder home staging has gotten a lot of attention lately. Expand interior appeal to a larger buyer group and you may sell the home sooner and for more money. Companies that track home staging results report that a staged home can potentially reduce selling time by half and improve sales prices by 5% -7%. In fact a national survey of 2000 real estate agents conducted by HomeGain in 2003 found that "…moderately priced home improvements, ranging from $80-$2,800 made in preparation for sale actually yield the highest returns when a house is sold." So, if broader interior appeal translates to increased economic value, an improved exterior should, too. Because most buyers form opinions 'at the curb' - before they even get out of the car - a home's exterior is a powerful, pre-emptive stage...
Developing Your Own Best Landscaping Ideas
2008-02-26 04:15:00 It is not always easy to come up with your own landscaping ideas. In fact, it's not uncommon for beginners to use professional help in developing their first landscaping ideas and plans. First off -- don't allow yourself to feel overwhelmed. Take your time and realize that this is suppose to be stress relieving -- not stress inducing. Take a stroll around the yard and really look around. Get a good feel for your area. Note where the trees are. Note where the open areas are. What areas get sunlight and when? Where is the drainage? What areas should be converted to other uses (patio, pond, garden, etc.) Really note the area though several days and weather patterns. It would be very bad to find that the area you set aside for a volleyball court is underwater for days after a rain, for instance. Now imagine what you would like to see and do with your yard in the future. This is the best way to develop landscaping ideas. Do you want a showplace with flowers and herbs or do you want a r...
