Are You Ready For Local Indian Language Domain Names?
2011-11-29 08:25:00
India, being the 2nd largest pocket of people in the world has immense potential. While it already has one of the largest populations of netizens in the world, there is still a lot of scope for growth. One barrier to people using the internet has been their inability or discomfort with using the English Language. Yahoo already offers its content in 6 Local Indian Languages. A lot of Apps too have recognized the need to reach out to Vernacular users. According to the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), who recently held a workshop on IDNs or International Domain Names in an effort to spread awareness, Internet Domain Names may soon be in Indian Languages. The Indian Government and the ICANN have both taken it upon themselves to push for local language domain names on the worldwide web. The workshop, while spreading awareness, had put special emphasis on promoting Kannada. Tulika Pandey from the Department of Information Technology said, “In the past, IDNs we...

Dogs Have a Universal Language. Why Don?t Humans?
2011-10-30 13:12:00
Cait is going on a foreign exchange program soon. We're in the countdown to liftoff, with its attendant flurry of activity. That means that along with going over packing checklists, we're running through cultural and language checklists as well. Having lived in other countries, I'm keenly aware of the fact that because all humans essentially look the same--two eyes, two ears, a mouth, etc--we tend to make assumptions that people everywhere else are pretty much like us. And therefore we can mostly accurately interpret all other people's actions and behavior through our own cultural lens. I can tell you from firsthand experience that, while some would argue that the world has gone flat andhomogeneity is the new norm, there are still plenty of differences that set each culture apart. Interestingly, one of the experiences that tipped me off to this fact happened before I even had a chance to set foot outside the US. In having had the opportunity to study three languages from two...
Critical Fragments: Reification
2011-10-04 05:17:00
As vehicle for conveyance of ideas, language has its weaknesses ? context, semantics, and cognition ? but we persevere. Simply put, the very nature of the language system has built-in fragility and misrecognition within its contextualization. With that in mind, we move blindly forward, optimistic and a little nave of the futility of the efforts expended in our attempt at communication. In pedagogical models, language is indispensable. The faux determinacy of ?Q&A? promises analyses and documentation of knowledge. In scientific, mathematic and certain biological areas, this inductive reasoning allows for the certainty of gathering, compiling and quantifying such knowledge. Matters of aesthetics have an inherent indeterminacy; the subjective experience, insidious and subsumed within ?taste,? very nearly prohibits absolute answers such as those of science, math and biology. There is the flux of perception, the weight of preference and the foreground of habitus. In essence, wit...

Sathya Sai Baba Scandal: RJ Ratnakar?s Body Language In NDTV Interview On S
2011-06-29 04:21:00
Although Sai Baba once famously wrote a letter in which he renounced his family - as renunciates in time-honored Indian tradition do, along with (except for those such as tantricists) his nephew RJ Ratnakar is at centre stage in the Sathya Sai Central Trust. In one moment, we are told that ex Chief Justice of India P.N. Bhagwati is head of the Sai Central Trust. Next thing, we learn that Ratnakar is at the helm. In fact, many Sai devotees see him as having usurped the rights of Sai Baba's chosen successor, Satyajit. Bhagwati himself had affirmed Satyajit. Word has now come through that Bhagwati, Chakravarthi (longtime Trust secretary, and the father of one of my students whom I most respected) and others have tended resignations, as have the highly reputed Dr A.N. Safaya, along with a number of doctors and nurses. See: Head of Sai Baba Mega Dollar Hospital At Puttaparthi Resigns. New Language, New Mass Settings ... But Will It Fill the Church?
2011-06-24 15:00:00
My husband and I talk a lot about our Church and where it's headed.  With the new language to be implemented at Advent and the talk of using more Gregorian chant for the Mass settings, we both often find ourselves scratching our heads and wondering, "Why?"Will these changes really bring people to our faith?  Will it bring those who have left it back?  Will it keep the young people, who after 8 or 12 years of Catholic education, suddenly stop going to church altogether?  As Bishop Fulton Sheen said, "I tell my relatives and best friends, 'If you want your children to fight for their faith, send them to public school. If you want them to lose their faith, send them...

Reliance Ramps Up R World; Indian Language Content Coming Soon..
2011-02-16 15:10:00
In December, we wrote that Reliance Communications had tied up with Motricity for a 3G ready R world. Days after that it began the roll out of its 3G services. Today, the company announced that after a good initial response to R World, it will continue to use Motricity’s m-core platform to offer a wider range of advanced services related to mobile commerce, advertising and location. It also announced that it intends to make the platform multi-lingual. Not surprisingly Hindi will be the first language, though the company added that other popular Indian languages would follow as well. It also highlighted that R World will offer highly targeted marketing and ad campaigns for better mobile monetization. Apart from Indian languages, localized content was on the cards too. As were Location Based Services to help users get relevant information. In related news, Ericsson announced yesterday that Reliance would use its estore solution to power its Application Store. Other N-Words
2011-01-09 05:56:00
News that a new and politically correct edition of Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn would be published this year by NewSouth Books has been met generally with derision and condemnation from Twain scholars.(1) The concept seemed suspect from the start. As proposed by Auburn University professor and the NewSouth edition's editor Alan Gribben, the plan is to eliminate Twain's over-abundant use of a certain racial slur, the n-word, and replace it with the slightly less offensive, presumably more humane, and thus imminently more "teachable" word, "slave." Gribben's waffling explanation didn't help much to dispel the disingenuousness of it: "The n-word possessed, then as now, demeaning implications more vile than almost any insult that can be applied to other racial groups. There is no equivalent slur in the English language. As a result, with every passing decade this affront appears to gain rather than lose its impact. Even at the level of college and graduate sc...

A rather linguistic Christmas to you all!
2010-12-25 21:36:00
Some interesting observations this very merry Christmas day: Why do some songs refer to the First Nowell and others the First Nol? It turns out that Noel itself comes from the Middle English nowel, which in turn is from the French nol, a variant of nael, from the Latin natalis, or "birth" (day).

I know that Gaby clearly learned Spanish first and was exposed to English in a very limited way prior to starting school.  She was always taught that English is for academics and Spanish is for everything else.  To do day she still knows this. Bullshit language.
2010-10-10 17:07:00
Anyone else tired of bullshit language? Let me give you a couple of examples."Virtually"This is some kind of marketing bullshit speak that really means "Almost". In most cases no one wants to say Almost so they say Virtually. Like "Virtually Fat Free" or "Virtually 100% Effective!".Try this next time you're at the store. Find products that have the word "Virtually" somewhere on them. Read the text and replace "Virtually" with "Almost" in your head. Try it.Here's another. "99.99.99.99.99!"How annoying. Why end prices with .99 or .95? What a load of crap. It's a gimmick to make you think you're getting a better deal than what you are. Apparently 299.99 is a more satisfying price to most people than $300. I'm not exactly sure why, but that seems to be the case. Or least enough people think it's the case to see these kind of prices EVERYWHERE.That stuff pisses me off. You know what DOESN'T piss me off? Punk Kittens that's what.My Zazzle Store

International language breakdown irritates Blue Line riders

My daughter shares this annoying Tattler Tale: I was riding the Blue Line during morning rush to school, which actually seems more crowded than Red Line lately -- even worseThis guy was on his speaker phone trying to use an international calling card. But because he was in the tunnel, he obviously wasn't able to connect the call. He just kept trying over and over to complete this call, and over and over this irritating automated menu message kept asking him to put in his card number and subsequently, "Sorry, your call cannot be connected at this time, please try again in a few minutes. Your remaining balance for this call is $2.55."But he would just do it again, over...
MobileASL Brings Sign Language to Mobile Phones
2010-08-17 09:20:00
Mobile Revolution – the more we talk about, it the less it seems. From talks of mobiles leading digital revolution in India, to the increase in mobile social networking, to mobile internet users increasing exponentially each month, we have spoken about it all. Considering almost everything that could have been done via mobiles has been done and written about, is there scope for more? Of course there is. And University of Washington (UW) emphasizes that point with MobileASL, a mobile tool that they are testing that uses motion detection to identify American Sign Language and transmit those images over U.S. networks. The intention behind conducting such a study is that many-a-times the tone or message send via text are misinterpreted and as a result the next few texts are spent in explaining the initial message. To avoid such confusion, the University started testing MobileASL with a group of 11 students to examine how deaf or hearing-impaired people in the U.S. use mobile vide...

Small Illinois Town Makes English Official Language
2010-07-15 07:25:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Homer Township is not a metropolis commonly in the news in Illinois. Situated to the south and west of Chicago about an hour or so, the small town is generally a quiet place. That may be about to change, at least for this week, because the township's board of trustees just voted to support a new policy making English the official language for government business. Granted this is not much of a change from what they are already doing. The resolution requires that all business that the government of the township does will all be in English only, something that is already the case. Minutes, notices, agendas, all printing, and all the records of the assessor's...
Learning to Speak a Foreign Language for Free
2010-06-03 01:06:00
One of the bigger hurdles on going to a foreign country is being able to communicate. I was reminded on how awful my Spanish was over Memorial Day weekend while I was in Bogota, Colombia. So, now that I'm back and recovered from my trip, it's time to get learning another language so I'm not being "that gringo" again.Luckily for me, the BBC has a very comprehensive list of languages and their travel phrases. They feature 12 week courses in Spanish, French, Italian and German and for 40 other languages, quick phrases you can download in mp3 format. Now it's time to get studying!...

Desi Language Transliteration Comes To Desktop Courtesy Google
2010-01-30 07:47:00
We have earlier told you about the web based language translation tool from Google for Indian Languages. The problem with all web based tools are generic – you can not use them when you are not connected to the internet and are not integrated with the applications that are already installed on your desktop. But with this newly launched Google Transliteration IME (Input Method Editor) you can type into various areas of the installed OS in your regional language. The Google Transliterate IME lets you type or communicate in your preferred language both online and offline and in any installed application. As you type into the IME, a suggestion menu is displayed with alternatives of the word and proper completions. For example, when you type “bhaar”, you can see various suggestions as shown in this screenshot below: The tool is currently available in 14 different languages – Arabic, Bengali, Farsi (Persian), Greek, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi...

Businesses will spend about $680 billion this year to market their products and services. One-third of that goes toward traditional media advertising; the rest goes to things like coupons, rebates, Web site development, contests, trade shows, and public relations.  Over the next five years, the amount spent on advertising is forecast to decline 7.5%.  The amount spent on everything else is expected to increase 24%. Traditional media advertising has entered the era of perpetual decline.  Perpetual decline, my friends.  No more riding the annual tide.

Microsoft Ventures Into Indian Language Transliteration Tools

Only 1.2 crore homes that have PCs versus 45 crore mobile phones in India – Microsoft seems to have a solution to that large difference.
