An International Language
2008-05-18 18:20:00
European languages have been around a long time. Many of them are even older than the true international language, English. Many a-reader will know how the English language was transported around the globe - yet, many still don’t understand that as English was - so were many others. It wasn’t a matter that Elizabeth I decided ...

2008-05-16 16:04:00
Organisations in Sweden 82 Språkrådet The Language Council of Sweden The official language cultivation body of Sweden. What is language cultivation? The Swedish word "språkvård" is a loan translation of the German word "Sprachpflege". Literally, språkvård means 'language care', but is often translated as language cultivation or language planning. This involves the making of handbooks, giving lectures and linguistic guidance and raising people's linguistic awareness, but also entails longer-term efforts to influence the language situation in the country. What does The Council do? The Council publishes books and handbooks and two journals, "Klarspråksbulletinen" and "Kieliviesti". We register new words and deal with fields such as terminology and language technology. We offer lectures as well as free consultation in linguistic matters. In the last two years, we have published several handbooks, e.g. a handbook on correct language use and a dictionary of ...

The Best Song In A Language Other Than English
2008-05-13 22:57:00
A lot of people who read this are going to look at that headline and say "Don't you mean The Best Song In A Foreign Language?" But I don't. Because TBOE is an international website, so people from other countries read it, too. Even if those countries don't have the good sense to speak English, they are kind of real countries with kind of real feelings and their own cultures that I should respect, but to respect them I'd have to know about them and to know about them I'd have to do something other than watch my new Newhart Season One DVDs which Sweetie gave me as an anniversary present. So I'm not likely anytime soon to understand other cultures, but I do know that they speak languages that are not English, and I do know that they think those languages are not "foreign languages." In fact, I understand -- if you can believe this -- they think English is a foreign language. I'm sure they'll see the light of day once we either start shipping them iPods or invade them or both. Un...

What?s the easiest language for an English speaker to learn?
2008-05-12 21:10:00
In theory the answer is Scots or perhaps Ulster Scots although there’s a lot of debate as to whether either count as a language. Thoughts on Language Acquisition
2008-05-10 13:46:00
I was talking to someone the other day (I forget who), and this individual brought up the fact that Condoleeza Rice?s Russian is ?so bad.? This person thought it was reprehensible that someone who studied Russian in university spoke the language so poorly. But the thing is, I completely understand. In order to maintain one?s foreign language abilities, one must constantly practice and study. I received my BA in Russian in 2001. At that time, my spoken Russian, while not fluent, was pretty damn good. However, from Summer 2001 to Summer 2005, I neither practiced nor studied Russian. Additionally, during that time I made two extensive trips to South Korea, traveled all over Costa Rica, and lived in Southern California within walking distance of the Mexican border. By the time I returned to Russia in August 2005, my Russian skills had greatly diminished; I spoke something I referred to as Spanglorusskikonglish.I was in Russia from August 2005 through June 2006, during which time my Russi...

Islam in Xinjiang (China): The survival of Uighur language
2008-05-09 11:10:00
The Chinese Turkestan was always known to have a majority Muslim population but not much was known about Muslims in this region and other parts of China till recently. With the Communist country, at last, opening its doors to outsiders and journalists rushing to Tibet and Xinjiang, new facets of Chinese life are emerging. The photographs of the streets of the Western region of Xinjiang surprised me. Like the photograph on the left (above) that shows Arabic alphabets. The signboards were readable and the script was Arabic and similar to Urdu. Such signboards are common in this region of China. The Uyghur language which is written in Arabic script is spoken by over 10 million people but it is surely a miracle that despite state oppression, the script has survived to this day.In India, within sixty years after independence Urdu script has almost gone out of public life even in Muslim dominated towns of North India. Here the State governments may be apathetic to the language but the situat...

Firefox Vietnamese Language Pack Infected
2008-05-08 18:54:00
Mozilla has published in its blog some news regarding the incidence with the Vietnamese language pack for Firefox 2.In February, a Vietnamese language pack for Firefox was published. The problem was that before being uploaded to the corresponding server, it had been already infected, as the internal code of the *.xhtml files had been modified and included the following instruction:The files which contain that malicious code are detected as W32/Xorer.T.This instruction resolves to: http://js.k0102.com/01.asp , don’t worry because this URL is currently offline. The question is: how can anybody be sure that their computer is malware free? You can check it in http://www.infectedornot.com, and scan your computer with the ActiveScan 2.0 online scanner, a security solution that operates on the basis of 'collective intelligence', which allows many more threats to be detected.

Sezu ni
2008-05-08 15:26:00
???The ?zu suffix on verbs is one that - once you know enough Japanese, but perhaps not quite enough yet - can be rather difficult to grasp the gist of. Because it is not used that much, it can seem difficult. But despite its obscurity, in terms of meaning it is actually very simple.-zu means ?without doing?. It is basically the same as the more commonly heard ?naide, but could be said to have a stronger nuance of having failed to do, or missed out on doing, something before doing something else, or for something not happening that would otherwise normally be expected to happen.Suffixing -zu to verbs takes a bit of getting used to. For example, suffixed to the verb suru, or to do, changes it to sezu: ?without doing?. This is an irregular one, but one of the most common, so let?s look at a couple of examples of it first. (NB For the sake of clarity, the English translations of the following example sentences follow the Japanese sentence structure, even if often at the expense of soun...

The Dutch Language - A Languages of the World Primer
2008-05-07 07:00:00
Dutch began to develop in the fifth century AD from old Frankish, a Germanic tribal language. At around that time, the southern dialects of old Frankish (including the forerunner of modern German) underwent significant phonetic changes (known as the High German shift) whereas the northern dialects (including the forerunner of modern Dutch) did not. As ...
Communications - Common Language
2008-05-06 13:04:00
Clarity of communication is a critical component of all business transactions. Without understanding, we are prone to execute instructions in a manner different than that desired. So how then, can we as communicators ensure our message is clear and understood by those receiving it? For communications to be clear, they must possess several key qualities, one of which is common language. Common language is more than a specific language; it also includes a common frame of reference. People from different locations often use words and phrases the meaning of which is not broadly understood. And even among individuals sharing a like understanding of this slang, an off-normal word association can inhibit understanding. One of the best illustrations of two people speaking one language, English, but not understanding each other because of a lack of common reference is Abbot and Costello’s “Who’s On First?” routine first performed in the early 1930’s. Video 1: Abbott and Costello...

user labor markup language (ULML)
2008-05-06 06:28:00
The above screen capture is pulled from the explanation for Burak Arikan and Engin Erdogan's exciting new User Labor project. With this venture, Burak and Engin have developed User Labor Markup Language (ULML), an XML format for determining the value of online activity, interaction and connectivity. The project neatly dovetails with other web initiatives like Data Portability and OpenSocial but moves beyond discussions about online identity and data ownership into the realm of quantifying the value of user contributions to web services. The User Labor statement contextualizes the project in light of a Web 2.0 business model we have all become rather accustomed to: Granted, the user is already getting compensated by using the service for free in exchange with advertisement exposition. But, the value of the web service is based on the sum of service facilitation and content production, and the user appears as a stakeholder twice in the service ecology, as the consumer and the produce...

The Art of Writing & Speaking The English Language# Author: Sherwin Cody# Format:PDF 1.13MB# Page Count: 172 pages# Publisher: Echo Library# Language: English# ISBN-10: 1406846570# ISBN-13: 978-1406846577If there is a subject of really universal interest and utility, it is the art of writing and speaking one's own language effectively. It is the basis of culture, as we all know; but it is infinitely more than that: it is the basis of business. No salesman can sell anything unless he can explain the merits of his goods in effective English (among our people), or can write an advertisement equally effective, or present his ideas, and the facts, in a letter. Indeed, the way we talk, and write letters, largely determines our success in life. Now it is well for us to face at once the counter-statement that the most ignorant and uncultivated men often succeed best in business, and that misspelled, ungrammatical advertisements have brought in millions of dollars. It is an acknowledged fact...

Body Language in Communication - Non-Verbal Messages
2008-05-03 17:08:00
Body language is made up of several things including facial expression, gesture, eye contact, and posture. The game Charades that you played as a kid which allowed you to use body language alone to get your teammates to guess the name of a movie or a well-known phrase, the era of the silent movie, and the talent of a mime all teach us that body language is powerful.I am sure you can recall a time when you conveyed a message to another using the power of your body language - a look you shot your daughters when they got chatty in church, an ear-to-ear smile and open arms for your spouse when he/she returned from a business trip, a soft touch on the arm of a friend who was mourning the loss of a loved one, a hug and a tender look for your son who skinned his knee. These are all powerful messages. In addition, your voice, which can include volume, pitch, rate, variation, tone and more, can say a lot. Anyone who grew up with a father who bellowed first, middle and last names at the sight ...

Defending China's English Language Press
2008-05-03 09:17:00
Last week on a Shandong Airlines flight, I overheard someone in the seat behind me say something to his fellow traveler along the lines of the following, in reference to a front page headline in the China Daily (I think): "'Chinese people's feelings hurt by foreign media.' What kind of mature country has a headline like that?" The two of them then launched into a fifteen minute discussion excoriating China's English language media. I was reminded of that conversation today in reading a post on James Fallows' blog, entitled, "The bright side #4: Why I've missed the (English-language) Chinese press." In his post, Fallows rightfully makes light of the May 1 China Daily's lead headline, which reads "Happiness abounds as country cheers" and includes a picture of T1bet*n university students in rejoicing over the Olympics. Fallows tongue in cheek take on this story: There are serious aspects to the enormous gap between Chinese and international coverage of the Olympics, T1b*...

Japanese Word Endings: ppoi
2008-05-01 15:32:00
???A very large part of Japanese grammar is all about word endings.A very useful word ending for the learner of Japanese is the ending "ppoi"the p here being repeated to represent a stop, as an English speaker doeswith the phrase "top price".ppoi has the same role as the -y or -ish or -like endings in English in thatit is used to create an adjective. It could be defined as indicatingqualities usually associated with the noun it is attached to.For example, take apple, or ringo, and kaori, or fragrance. "an apply kindof fragrance" is, ringoppoi kaori.Or the Beatles, biitoruzu, and hairstyle, kamigata. "a Beatles-like haircut"is biitoruzuppoi kamigata.Or a bank, ginko, and atmosphere, foon-iki. Honorific Prefixes in Japanese
2008-05-01 03:35:00
???Last week we talked about some word endings, which are very important in Japanese.Today, we will look at prefixes, in particular the honorifics "o" and "go."Using the noun fish, a simple example is ?? (o-sakana). A literal translation would be "honorable fish" or "Mr./Ms. Fish." In Japanese, though, this sounds quite normal and it should be translated simply as "fish."Why add the "o"?It sounds polite and softens one's language. In general, "o" is placed in front of words of Japanese origin. Other examples are:??? (0-namae) = name?? (o-kusuri) = medicine??? (o-yasumi) = vacation, day off?? (o-kane) = money???? (o-kaimono) = shopping???? (o-isogashi) = busyTo make things a bit complicated, there is another honorific: "go."This is used for words of Chinese origin.??? (go-shokai) = introduction??? (go-jusho) = address??? (go-chumon) = order??? (go-kazoku) = familyFinally, keep in mind that these are terms to be used for others. You should refer to your neighbor's family as "go-kazok...

The first of these was the ...
