De facto a capela de Nossa Senhora da Lapa foi construída já no século XVII pelos jesuítas, mas o culto é muito anterior, havendo quem o remeta para o século X, quando as investidas dos mouros fizeram com que a população cristã tenha escondido uma imagem da Virgem numa gruta ou "lapa". Mas histórias, lendas e milagres são o que não falta neste santuário com muitos ex-votos e com uma curiosa passagem entre rochas por onde só se consegue esgueirar quem não cometeu pecados graves." 2007-08-13 19:30:00 O culto de Nossa Senhora da Lapa iniciou-se no longínquo ano de 1498 com o achado de uma imagem entre a penedia e debaixo de uma enorme lapa.Nesse lugar foi construída uma pequena ermida. Em 1576 a Companhia de Jesus tomou conta do local em fez erguer o actual Santuário com os penedos e a lapa no seu interior. No ano de 1685 iniciou-se a construção do "Colégio da Lapa" junto ao Santuário.A devoção à imagem encontrada pela pastorinha muda que foi a primeira a beneficiar dum milagre espalhou-se por Portugal e pelos quatro cantos do mundo.
