Tucked away in some surely obscure corner were these two gems: the 15.6-inch G50V and 17-inch G71V. The first of the two rigs was packing a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9700M GT graphics card, a WXGA '3D display,' Intel's Centrino 2 platform, support for 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a pair of 320GB SATA drives and a sturdy keyboard built for gamers. The larger sibling was said to posses the same GPU and platform, though it was sporting twin 500GB drives and support for DDR3 memory / CPU overclocking. Beyond that, we're left to wonder what on Earth could be hiding behind those somewhat unsightly shells, but hopefully ASUS won't keep us wondering for long.(Via Engadget Laptops.)

"We have taken the measure for passengers' own safety because certain people could use laptops for negative purposes," Herry Bakti, the airport's administrator was quoted by the national Antara News Agency as saying. The tight inspection on laptops was meant as an anticipative measure against the illegal use of documents for certain purposes, including terrorist activities, he said. The inspection on laptops was done with the help of X-ray devices and by body search, he said, noting that laptops could also be used to hide heroin. The job usually requires a custom motherboard and other specialized components, and so the laptop owner who wants to upgrade his or her machine faces a much more difficult task than the owner of a desktop machine with a similar wish. One can swap out the hard drive, add more RAM, and make tweaks in software, but almost everything else requires the addition of external components, which kind of defeat the purpose of a laptop.
