Last King of Scotland

Last King of Scotland - Dir: Kevin Macdonald

The critical and awards buzz surrounding this film has been pretty big and in some parts it truly deserves it. The movie meshes fact and fiction regarding the meeting of a fresh Scottish doctor played by James McAvoy and Ugandan dictator Idi Amin played by Forrest Whitaker. The latter is truly exceptional and deserved his Oscar for Best Performance. After seeing it, you wonder how he ever had to audition for the role, but he did! McAvoy is ok but his performances are becoming a bit samey with that constant pissed off steeley eyed looked he does. The screenplay is the biggest let down in that it all seems quite thin and never really digs deeper than the surface. It's watchable because of Whitaker's virtuosu performance, but the film around it isn't engrossing enough. This a JM SUCK IT AND SEE.

*** May contain spoilers *** The plot: Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy), Scott, graduated from medical school and randomly picked Uganda to practice his skills. He arrived in the poor, but beautiful country just in time for Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker) to take over the country from deposed president Milton Obote after a military coup. To Nicholas it appeared ...
The Last King Of Scotland

The Last King Of Scotland is a very exciting film and is far more a thriller than a biopic, which some people might expect because it deals with real life people. The main difference with a movie like, for example, Walk The Line is that Idi Amin is more of a side character to Nicholas Garrigan who is thrown into this historical world of this great figure who once was president of Uganda. Nicholas Garrigan who never lived, but is fictional, is based on the character from the novel by Giles Foden on which the movie is based. This aspect of fiction makes you wonder, though, if replacing the film to a different country and different background would have changed the story or that it wouldn't have really mattered where the story took place, in what particular period of time. Is it necessary to tell this story through the life of Idi Amin or could it have the same effect if told entirely with fictionalized people? I think a big part of the strength of the film is Amin's character and th...

Yes, I was right, I should have gone for it last night itself. Watching The Last King of Scotland is a fulfilling experience. It?s rich in drama, performance and storytelling. Hate Idi Amin as much as you can but you?d love Whitaker playing him. Last King of Scotland is cinematically so mature that I?ve difficulty believing that it?s Kevin Macdonald?s debut feature. Kevin carefully builds the character of Amin. He chooses a huge Whitaker to play Amin. And quite often his round and plump face... [[Click on the headline to read this post and comment on it]]

WINNER: Actor in a leading roleForest WhitakerThe Last King Of ScotlandACCEPTANCE SPEECHThank you. Thank you. Just a second, just a second. OK. Take it. OK. I wrote something down, because I thought if it would happen that I would be a little overwhelmed and I am. So, OK. When I was a kid, the only way that I saw movies was from the backseat of my family's car. At the drive-in. And, it wasn't my reality to think I would be acting in movies, so receiving this honor tonight tells me that it's possible. It is possible for a kid from east Texas, raised in South Central L.A. in Carson, who believes in his dreams, commits himself to them with his heart, to touch them, and to have them happen. Because when I first started acting, it was because of my desire to connect to everyone. To that thing inside each of us. That light that I believe exists in all of us. Because acting for me is about believing in that connection and it's a connection so strong, it's a connection so deep, that we...
