The League Cup takes centre stage with all eyes on Urawa
2008-03-20 04:43:00 After sensationally sacking coach Holger Osieck in the aftermath of Urawa's second successive league defeat of the season, all eyes will be on Saitama Stadium for the beginning of the Gert Engels era as Urawa Reds kick off their Nabisco League Cup campaign at home to Vissel Kobe.Club president Mitsunori Fujiguchi claimed that Osieck had lost the support of the players, and former assistant coach Engels will hope to win over players and fans alike with some positive results in Urawa's upcoming League Cup matches. In contrast to Holger Osieck, Nagoya Grampus coach Dragan Stojkovic was ecstatic with Nagoya's 2-0 win over Urawa last weekend, and the Toyota-backed club kick off their League Cup campaign when they face Kyoto Sanga FC for the second time in two weeks. The League Cup is comprised of a six-game group stage, with the four group winners and two best-placed runners-up joining AFC Champions League participants Kashima Antlers and Gamba Osaka in the quarter-finals.The fixture li...

The Tarnishing of the F A Cup
2008-03-09 21:25:00 For the uninformed the F. A. Cup is the equivalent of the Super Bowl in the States, a very prestigious honour. The first game was in the 1871-2 season; the Wanderers won, beating a team from the Royal Engineers 1-0. In 1923 Wembley Stadium was completed as the showcase of English football, and to celebrate the occasion Bolton beat West Ham 2-0. Since Wembley was destroyed, (and rebuilt to host this year's Cup final) and the final played at other locations there seems to have a insignificance given to this oldest of competitions. I believe the glory years are gone from the F.A. Cup, which is unfortunate as it is truly the only significant English competition left.Managers do not seem to appreciate the history of the cup, and now we find them using it, as they do the Football League Cup, to field experimental weaker teams. (The League Cup is a competition limited to teams just within the four professional leagues of England, 72 teams, while the F A Cup's initial rounds are also ope...

The Lerner Galleries and Spurs reach League Cup final
2008-01-23 02:25:00 First to the £5mn. donation by Randy Lerner to the National Portrait Gallery (http://www.npg.org.uk). The cynic in me says he's looking for a knighthood or residency but the nice guy side says, he's simply a generous chap. If you don't know what I'm talking about, I'll explain. Randy Lerner has given the institution's largest single donation to date and the ground-floor galleries are being renamed the Lerner Galleries in recognition.

Teen Fires Gamba To League Cup Glory
2007-11-04 01:40:00 Teenager Michihiro Yasuda couldn?t have picked a better time to claim his first professional goal, scoring the winner in Gamba Osaka?s 1-0 win over Kawasaki Frontale in the final of the Nabisco league cup in Tokyo on Saturday.Yasuda, 19, scored the lone goal of the afternoon in the 56th minute by redirecting a cross from Brazilian striker Bare.Gamba?s first-ever cup title comes just two years after their disappointing penalty-shootout loss to JEF United Chiba in the final of the 2005 tournament.Defender Yasuda, a product of the Gamba youth system, was named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance in an evenly matched affair witnessed by 41,569 at National Stadium.?He is a very attack-minded defender,? Osaka manager Akira Nishino said of the young left back. ?He is very quick, has a good attacking sense and is a fine utility player. I told him at halftime to get forward and try to score if he could, and voila!?Comments from Kawasaki manager Takeshi Sekizuka:?I?d like to say ...
