Stephen Leahy: FoodEthanol Worse Than Gasoline
2008-02-10 10:17:00
It is insane to use food stuffs for motor fuel.   It causes more damage to the environment and increases the cost of food.   Stephen Leahy. Environmental Journalist:L Feb 8 (IPS) - Biofuels are making climate change worse, not better, according to two new studies which found that total greenhouse gas emissions from biofuels are far higher than those from burning gasoline because biofuel production is pushing up food prices and resulting in deforestation and loss of grasslands. “Emissions from ethanol are 93 percent higher than gasoline,” said David Tilman, an ecologist at the University of Minnesota and co-author of one of the papers published Thursday in the journal Science. Leahy, Mukasey, Torture and Anthrax: Connecting the Dots
2007-11-04 12:36:00
The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee Patrick Leahy said Friday he won’t support Attorney General nominee Michael Mukasey because Mukasey hasn’t taken a firm enough stand against torture. Leahy said: “No American should need a classified briefing to determine whether waterboarding is torture.” Separately, Patrick Leahy at last report is very dissatisfied with the briefing the former US Attorney General Gonzales had promised to give him on why he had been sent mailed anthrax. He repeatedly criticized Gonzales for allowing waterboarding. Judge Mukasey, who likely would make a great Attorney General, is in a difficult spot through no fault of his own. I had repeatedly blogged over the years that Senator Leahy, one of my favorite Senators, was targeted in Fall 2001 precisely because of this issue of torture, and that the folks connected to the WTC 1993 prosecution overseen by Judge Mukasey were responsible. After the assassination of Anwar Sadat, Cai...

The Dishonorable Leahy (Leaky Leahy) Wants An Investigation
2007-08-17 06:51:00
I have lived over a half a century and at no time have I seen a pathetic CONgress as that which we have now, in these trying times.Call me crass. Call me crude. Call me brass. Call me rude. I care not.Leahy is an international embarrassment.Never before have I witnessed a political party going after an administration such as we see now via ghosts and non-issues.In a letter to the Inspector General, Leaky Leahy has the nerve and the audacity to continue chasing ghosts and another non-issue.As in the case of Scooter Libby, this AG Gonzales issue is a Democratic Party and Moron Moonbat Fruit Loop Brigade led Witch Hunt. The BDS is so bad, it has clouded reason and good judgment. This is a nation at war and there are bigger fish and more pressing issues to "attack".EVERY President has fired lawyers at their discretion and there are absolutely no "lines drawn in the sand" as to when the act transpires and I don't care what the "norm" has been thought to be. Leahy: Is Bush Directly Responsible For Firing US Attorneys?
2007-08-02 21:27:00
by- Suzie-Q @ 12:28 PM MST The Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee started a hearing on the firing of eight federal prosecutors by asking if President George W. Bush was directly responsible for the termination of the prosecutors. “We are quickly reaching the point where, given the claim of executive privilege, the logical question is what did the President know and when did he know it?” asked Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) in his opening remarks. “By his claim of executive privilege, is President Bush now taking responsibility for the firing of such well-regarded and well-performing U.S. attorneys?” Leahy also pointed to Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald’s statement that a cloud was hanging over Vice President Dick Cheney during the trial of his former aide I. Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby, and compared it to the current situation. “Federal prosecutors observed that such a cloud hangs over the Vice President in the Libby case,&rdquo...

Leahy Says He'll Fight
2007-07-02 09:40:00
Is the rumble on? AP reports Patrick Leahy won't take "no" for an answer from the White House when he was asked on Meet the Press if he'd ask for a vote on contempt citations he said, " If they don't cooperate, yes I'd go that far," in the matter of the US Attorney firings. Then there's the White House spokesman Tony Fratto, "...there's simply no merit for this overreach."Separately Leahy and Rep John Conyers have subpoenaed the White House for documents related to the warrant less wiretapping. BushCo has until 7/9 to explain their claim of executive privilege and Leahy and Conyers seem disinclined to care why. The White House makes the usual claim to need confidential advice. There happens to be a fly in that particular ointment, criminal activity certainly is excluded from any legal counsel shield, an officer of the court -as any lawyer is - is specifically barred from illegal activity or counseling it and loses all shielding.Legal experts seem to think that this might ...

Leahy & Conyers’ Letter To The White House
2007-06-29 15:44:00
Today Senator Leahy and Congressman Conyers have put the Executive Privilege ball back in the White House’s court: Dear Mr. Fielding: …We had hoped our Committees’ subpoenas would be met with compliance and not a Nixonian stonewalling that reveals the White House’s disdain for our system of checks and balances.   We urge the President to reconsider this step and withdraw his privilege claim so the American people can learn the truth about these firings.   If he is unwilling to withdraw these claims, we call on you to provide more specific information to facilitate ruling on those claims and our consideration of appropriate action to enforce our subpoenas. […] Our Committees rejected your “take it or leave it” offer of off-the-record, backroom interviews and severe limits on the scope of our requests as unacceptable, more than three months ago.  Since that time, despite our many attempts to narrow the dispute and begin to obt...

Leahy Promises ?Real? Oversight of FBI
2006-12-14 16:19:01
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bush administration should expect tougher oversight of its war-on-terrorism strategy and perhaps some all-expense-paid tickets to Iraq to help train the corrupt police force there, the incoming chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said Wednesday. Sen. Patrick Leahy’s agenda includes a look at about a dozen recommendations by the Iraq Study Group to send law enforcement officials from the FBI and other offices in the Justice Department to the war-torn nation to boost a police force riddled with corruption.
