Reader Suggestion: College Lectures
2008-02-16 03:27:00 I had asked yesterday if anyone desired a specific entry. The first reply wanted me to discuss what a typical college lecture was like. So, I'll do my best to describe class fairly, without my bias interfering with the facts.Disclaimer: Every lecturer is a bit different in style and delivery, so this is what to generally expect.Classes fall under three different categories. The first is a lecture, the second is a discussion, and the third is a read-along.Lecture classes are typically the toughest for students. They require constant note taking and incessant attention. The lecturer bases his exams on the material presented in class, so if you miss a day try to get the materials from a classmate. A lecturer, using the blackboard, white board, or power point, presents and discusses the information he deems most important for the subject at hand. He may refer students to the text book if they want to explore other topics, but on the whole, he is only interested in what he himself has t...

Mes lectures "Djerbiennes"

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Lectures On Treatment Of Women
2008-01-15 02:49:00 Anyone else find this patently absurd? Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who rules over a nation where men are allowed to have four permanent wives and as many “temporary” wives as they like, declared in a recent lecture to Iranian students that Iran honors women, while the West abuses them. The ayatollah said one indication of ...

The 2007 Dewey Lectures
2007-12-02 05:02:00 ...begin tomorrow! This year, Columbia University's Dewey Lectures will be delivered by Tyler Burge. Although I have only recently began examining Burge, I am already a big fan of the clarity and precision of his writing. As for his ideas, let's just say that he is one of the main philosophers I hope to spend lots of time thinking about over the course of my future philosophical career. In short, I am quite excited that he will be delivering the Dewey lectures this year. The overall title of the talks is "Self and Self Understanding", and the schedule is as follows:Lecture One: "Some Origins of Self"December 3rd 2007, 6:15-8:00 PM, Davis Auditorium (Shaipro), Reception to FollowLecture Two: "Self and Constitutive Norms"December 4th 2007, 6:15-8:00 PM, Davis Auditorium (Shapiro) Lecture Three: "Self-Understanding"December 5th 2007, 6:15-8:00 PM, Heyman Center Common Room

Paul Levinson Lectures on Freedom and Media
2007-11-11 23:32:00 Apologies for the third person in the title, but I thought it would make a more informative title than "I"... (You can click on "Guide" at the bottom of the screen, for a complete list of available episodes.)The videos in this series will usually be at least 30 minutes in length, and often an hour or more, in contrast to my YouTube videos, which are usually interview clips of me of just a few minutes. iTunes U — are the canned lectures a benefit to the students … or to th
2007-10-28 18:40:00 In his article YouTube U. Andy Kessler suggests it’s the professors. Some highlights: Without much fanfare, college lectures are being put online, for free. MIT lectures can be downloaded from iTunes University, and you can watch Cal professors pontificate on your computer via YouTube. Is this some new trend? Do colleges feel threatened by Wikipedia? Something funny is going on. No one gives anything away for free without some ulterior motive. I mean, don’t they know college is big business? Right now, 17 million students are involved in higher education, some higher than others. As a business, college is growing faster than sales of multicolored Crocs. Since 1980, the population of students under 25 has grown 40 percent–and for those over 25, it’s up even more at 52 percent. Is this what your neighbors are doing during the day? Could be. Even better (for colleges, anyway), since 2002 tuition has jumped 35 percent in real terms (that’s adjusted for ...

Saudi Arabia Lectures the EU on Human Rights
2007-10-09 10:00:00 Brussels Journal - The “Human Rights Commission” of Saudi Arabia, a country where slavery was formally abolished as late as the 1960s and is still practiced more or less openly (it is allowed according to sharia law), now lectures Europeans on Islamophobia. Notice that this is not an isolated incident; it is part of a sustained, ongoing effort with the explicit goal of surrendering half a billion Europeans to Islam.Saudi Arabia’s Human Rights Commission (HRC) will urge its counterparts in the European Union to ask their governments not to link terrorism to Islam and also to issue regulations to protect Muslims from prejudice and discrimination because of their faith. The government-funded rights body will also address various human rights issues in Europe: when Muslims are unjustly interrogated, treated with disrespect, physically or mentally abused, or not allowed to practice their faith freely such as Muslim girls being prevented from wearing the hijab (head cover) in some s...

2007-10-04 18:15:00 YouTube is now an important teaching tool at UC Berkeley. The school announced on Wednesday that it has begun posting entire course lectures on the Web's No.1 video-sharing site. Berkeley officials claimed in a statement that the university is the first to make full course lectures available on YouTube. The school said that over 300 hours of videotaped courses will be available at youtube.com/ucberkeley. Berkeley said it will continue to expand the offering. The topics of study found on YouTube included chemistry, physics, biology and even a lecture on search-engine technology given in 2005 by Google cofounder Sergey Brin. "UC Berkeley on YouTube will provide a public window into university life, academics, events and athletics, which will build on our rich tradition of open educational content for the larger community," said Christina Maslach, UC Berkeley's vice provost for undergraduate education in a statement.

Homeopathy lectures & courses by Prof Vithoulkas
2007-09-15 09:35:00 George Vithoulkas is a teacher and practitioner of homeopathy.. Vithoulkas asserts that the paradigm of conventional medicine has been disastrous for the health of mankind, having failed to prevent or cure disease, and that the excessive use of powerful chemical drugs is responsible for a worldwide degeneration of health. In his view conventional treatments for serious diseases lead to a reduced quality of life rather than longer life. He contends that this is due to medical researchers ignoring the "eternal truths" that underlie the "true principles of medicine and health", and foretells a spiritual crisis if this is not changed. He believes that "conventional medicine, instead of curing diseases, is actually the cause of the degeneration of the human race." He blames modern medicine, vaccinations, and antibiotics for mental disorders including various neurosis, hay fever, asthma, cancer and AIDS, claiming that "immune systems of the western popul...
