English language legislation gathers steam across the USA
2008-06-19 09:18:00 USA Today - English as an official language has gained momentum as proponents keep going to the ballot box with measures that discourage bilingual ballots, notices and documents. Thirty states now have laws specifying that official government communications be in English, says U.S. English, a group that promotes the laws. This year such bills are under ...

Michigan Democrats pass abortion legislation
2008-05-28 16:37:00 One of the arguments for supporting the democratic nominee this fall is that a failure to put a democrat in office will result in the further erosion of reproductive freedom. Programs And Legislation At Hand To Fight Foreclosures
2008-05-15 15:03:00 Many far-reaching proposals are ongoing to help poor homeowners in debt to be bailed out of a difficult situation. Some of them may be assisted through constructive programs that aim at active participation in places such as FHASecure. This program, though moderated through its eligibility parameters, along with Hope Now, tends to have a limited time span of delivering aid. A more legislative aspect is thus needed to ensure proper prevention of the foreclosure epidemic. Allen Fishbein, the director to the credit as well as housing project allied with the Consumer Federation of America, said that he supports the foreclosure prevention legislation. Though things are still under considered consolidation, there remains no better alternative to look up to or even choose from, under these situations. The legislation under Congress however requires a principal that would get to the bottom of bankruptcy problems allowing judges to revisit the conditions for mortgage contracts which should h...

Vermont Passes New Legislation limiting Lead, Phthalates and Mercury!
2008-05-07 17:00:00 As Vermont's legislative session closed, I held my breath and hoped that all or most of the environmental health bills would pass. And happily, most of them did. The bill that I had been most involved in, S.152, the Lead in Consumer Products bill, passed both the House and the Senate. Some of the provisions were weakened over the process, but the bill is one of the strongest lead product safety bills in the country. The bill sets new standards to be phased in on lead in children's products. No, the levels are not zero, but they are a good start in protecting our kids from lead exposures from children's products such as toys, bibs, diaper bags and pads. It also phases out lead in wheel weights and non-residential paints and primers and according to VPRIG, "Sets a standard on lead in plumbing fixtures and related supplies (we will be the 2nd state in the nation to have this protective standard on plumbing)". In a most helpful provision, it requires warnings to be posted for jewelry...

China story spawns legislation
2008-04-25 17:58:00 HASKINS CREATES BILL TO GIVE SC FIRMS EVEN PLAYING FIELD The Palmetto Scoop’s story about the University of South Carolina’s $36.5 million contract with the communist Chinese government has spurred legislation in the State House to give U.S. companies a better shot at winning the competitive bidding process for publicly-funded contracts. Rep. Gloria Haskins (R-Greenville) introduced H. 5088 that would make it illegal to give foreign companies a contract without first allowing U.S.-based firms an opportunity to be awarded the project. “I am shocked that state officials would send out tax dollars to communist China at a time when thousands of South Carolinians have lost their jobs,” Haskins said in press release Thursday. “It’s bad enough the federal government forces American companies to compete on an uneven playing field with China and other third world countries. But we can stop South Carolina from doing the same thing.” Critics of Hask...

2008-04-23 02:00:00 As I mentioned in a blog post in late October 2007, the IT industry and other stakeholders have been calling for the U.S. Congress to pass legislation that would help empower law enforcement to more effectively investigate and prosecute cyber criminals -- while updating penalties in U.S. criminal code so that the punishment fits the crime. It's stunning to me that the Congress has not yet sent legislation to the President for his signature to address this important issue...

Orphan Works Legislation is back and bad!
2008-04-17 04:05:00 from the SCADATLILLU blogOur beloved representatives in Washington have in front of them a rancid piece of legislation that could shake the Creative world to the core. All us who create images must educate ourselves to the law as it pertains to our business and our livelihood. Brad Holland and the Illustrators Partnership have struggled mightily over the last few years to safeguard our creative work, but Congress is about to yank the rug out from under us all unless we quickly come together and demand our rights as the rightful owners of our own creations. This article sums up what's going on, as well as this radio interview with Brad Holland so please take the time to read it and call or write your congressional representatives and let them know how bad this legislation is.Go here to download sample letters to congress, bullet point letters, and a list of lawmakers to e-mail them to. 'The PEPFAR reauthorization legislation is a sell-out'
2008-04-16 11:04:00 From: What Kind of Movement Are We? "We have to ask ourselves if we care more about our UN badges or about taking a stand for the needs and rights of people around the world." Those words are a paraphrase of those spoken by a committed South African activist who was encouraging civil society at the 2006 U.N. General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) AIDS meeting to risk our badges by protesting the disgustingly weak consensus document reached by member nations. (She was successful in getting us to take action. You can read a blog about that protest here.) I am reminded of her words as I think about how civil society has responded to the PEPFAR reauthorization bill that has now passed both the House and Senate committees and is headed to the floor of both chambers for a vote. I have been shocked over the last few weeks by the number of organizations and prominent individuals who have responded positively, or even neutrally, to the compromise bill. Some who have...

Legislation to mandate minimum vehicle sound levels coming
2008-04-09 20:51:00 Legislation to mandate minimum vehicle sound levels coming With the increasing numbers of quiet-running hybrid or electric vehicles on U.S. roads today, concerns are growing for the safety of pedestrians, and specifically the blind, who often rely on the sound of vehicles to get around safely and independently. As such, legislation that would set a minimum sound level for vehicles is slated to be heard by the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday. If passed, the law would require all cars sold in the U.S. by as early as 2010 to emit a minimum decibel level, one way or another, although no numbers have yet been set. The bill would first require the U.S. Secretary of Transportation to perform a study, with input from organizations representing the blind and other pedestrians, to determine if a minimum sound level is required, and if so, what it should be. Under the proposal, automakers would have two years to make their vehicles, hybrid or otherwise, meet the criteria. L... |
