Ford Statement on Driver Distraction Legislation
2009-09-14 13:24:00
A responsible and realistic statement from Ford on a critical issue. At DrivingEnthusiast.net, we endorse a ban on all texting and a requirement for hands-free voice-activiated support of cell phones. Lets put the distractions away and focus on driving! STATEMENT ON DRIVER DISTRACTION LEGISLATION The following is a statement from Sue Cischke, Group Vice President for Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering: WASHINGTON, D.C., September 10, 2009 – “At Ford, we think driver distraction is a critically important issue. Drivers experience many different types of distractions on a daily basis. Drivers are going to have conversations, read maps and directions, and listen to music while they drive. The most complete and most recent research shows that activity that draws drivers' eyes away from the road for an extended period while driving, such as text messaging, substantially increases the risk of accidents. Ford believes hands-free, voice-activated techn...

2009-08-04 04:57:00
In a comment to a recent post, reader Paul expressed one of the standard (but inaccurate) criticisms leveled against the Republican Party: In my opinion the Republican Party has been taken over the most extreme religious right (people who love to push their beliefs on others while trying to take away their rights)  Many of those who ...
Obama Faulted Bush Administration for Rushing Legislation
2009-07-28 10:28:00
If someone found a tape where George W. Bush, long before he had been elected President faulted a Democratic Administration for using tactics that he would use once in office, you can bet that the media would be playing that audio clip on a regular basis. Well, while reading what was on the mind of various ...

Yep....
Waxman-Markey Passes:Job-killing Legislation Crafted by Men who Never Creat
2009-06-27 20:57:00
While my Congressman has, to his credit, never taken an earmark to benefit our district, he has also never held a job in the sector he so delights in regulating.  He doesn’t understand how money is made, innovation fostered and jobs created.   For over forty years, Henry Waxman has served in government, six years in ...

Maine?s Marriage Legislation & the State?s ?Citizen?s Veto?
2009-05-07 09:17:00
Over the past few years when citizens across the country organized to put initiatives on their respective state’s ballot enacting a law or amending the state’s constitution to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman, I, while opposing their initiatives, appreciated their motivation.  They did not want their state Supreme Court ...
House Passes Hate Crimes Legislation; Delays DADT Repeal
2009-04-29 23:45:00
With the House passing H.R. 1913, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009 (by a 249-175 vote), gay groups are cheering.  I guess the White House is too; the President had urrged Congress to pass this bill. Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell Repeal Legislation Introduced
2009-03-02 20:13:00
Kudos to Rep. Tauscher for introducing this legislation and at least getting the ball rolling. It is precisely the sort of knife fight no president wants to get into, especially in his first 100 days. But it seems that President Barack Obama is about to get dragged down the same dark alley as Bill Clinton when ...
Senator Sobel Introduces Domestic Partnership Legislation
2009-02-19 02:49:00
The Senate’s version, SB 1642, will have a version in the House sponsored by Rep. Richard Steinberg. Many polls show 77% of Floridians favor benefits for unmarried couples, even at a time when a woman is suing a South Florida hospital for refusing to grant her access to her partner while she lay dying. This case proves that gay couples are especially vulnerable when there is no legal protections for their families. When passed, this bill will make sure that committed, unmarried couples in Florida have access to basic legal rights like visiting each other in the hospital. About. F*cking. Time. Let’s hear it for Eleanor Sobel and Richard Steinberg. Hmmm…I like those names.

Michigan Democrats pass abortion legislation
2008-05-28 16:37:00
One of the arguments for supporting the democratic nominee this fall is that a failure to put a democrat in office will result in the further erosion of reproductive freedom. This argument annoys and angers me because 1) it’s fear-based and 2) democrats have been selling out women for years now. If there’s one ...

Programs And Legislation At Hand To Fight Foreclosures
2008-05-15 15:03:00
Many far-reaching proposals are ongoing to help poor homeowners in debt to be bailed out of a difficult situation. Some of them may be assisted through constructive programs that aim at active participation in places such as FHASecure. This program, though moderated through its eligibility parameters, along with Hope Now, tends to have a limited time span of delivering aid. A more legislative aspect is thus needed to ensure proper prevention of the foreclosure epidemic. Allen Fishbein, the director to the credit as well as housing project allied with the Consumer Federation of America, said that he supports the foreclosure prevention legislation. Though things are still under considered consolidation, there remains no better alternative to look up to or even choose from, under these situations. The legislation under Congress however requires a principal that would get to the bottom of bankruptcy problems allowing judges to revisit the conditions for mortgage contracts which should h...

Vermont Passes New Legislation limiting Lead, Phthalates and Mercury!
2008-05-07 17:00:00
As Vermont's legislative session closed, I held my breath and hoped that all or most of the environmental health bills would pass. And happily, most of them did. The bill that I had been most involved in, S.152, the Lead in Consumer Products bill, passed both the House and the Senate. Some of the provisions were weakened over the process, but the bill is one of the strongest lead product safety bills in the country. The bill sets new standards to be phased in on lead in children's products. No, the levels are not zero, but they are a good start in protecting our kids from lead exposures from children's products such as toys, bibs, diaper bags and pads. It also phases out lead in wheel weights and non-residential paints and primers and according to VPRIG, "Sets a standard on lead in plumbing fixtures and related supplies (we will be the 2nd state in the nation to have this protective standard on plumbing)". In a most helpful provision, it requires warnings to be posted for jewelry...
