Easy, Old Fashioned Lemon Snaps Cookies
2008-05-14 19:23:00
Lemon snaps are an easy old fashioned cookie that you really don’t hear much about anymore, and that is a pity.  They are crispy on the outside, tender on the inside and lemony sweet throughout.  There is just nothing that compares with them for an old fashioned treat…unless it is gingersnaps…or molasses cookies…or… I don’t know, ...

SHF #43: Citrus - Lemon Yoghurt Ice Cream
2008-05-14 00:00:00
Helen of Tartelette chose citrus for the 43 rd edition of Sugar High Friday. Last weekend we already had summer in Northern Germany. And like ice in the sunshine the familiy was melting away on a sunny day. So I prepared a refreshing Lemon Yoghurt Ice Cream It's easy to prepare and if you have an ice cream maker with compressor you are only 50 minutes from your ice cream away! Just mix together 600 g greek yoghurt, 90 ml lemon juice, 160 g cream and 100 g sugar together and give it into your ice cream maker. Follow the instructions and refreshment is waiting. Birthday Girls: Sharing A Lemon Meringue Ice Cream Cake
2008-05-13 06:29:00
Happy Birthday to you...Happy Birthday to you...Happy Birthday to you Kate !Happy Birthday to you...Happy Birthday to you...Happy Birthday to you Tartelette !Yes, Kate from Aaplemint and I are doing it again! Last year we found out through back and forth banters and emails that we shared the same birthday and decided to bake each other a surprise cake. I just checked Kate's site and she made me Apricot Financiers, and she did not even know they were among my favorites!! Yipee! We decided to make it tradition, which I hope we last as long as we are both blogging, and here we are again! So my dear Kajal/Kate, here is to you a delicious Lemon Meringue Ice Cream Cake. The cake is composed of layer of meringue with a hint of lemon zest, lemon curd and homemade lemon ice cream inspired from one in my favorite all lemon book. I actually changed propotions, removed some ingredients, and used my usual curd recipe. I liked the idea not necessarily all of what she did. Except the ice cream.......
BBD #10 - Breakfast Breads! Honey Wheat Bread With Poppy Seeds and Lemon
2008-05-13 00:00:00
Melissa from Baking A Sweet Life hosts the 10th edition of Bread Baking Day. She chose Breakfast Breads. In our family we normally don't have special breads for breakfast. During the week we enjoy the breads I've baked. Sometimes the children eat muesli/granola, I prefer plain yoghurt. At weekends we prefer Brötchen, which means small breads in German. I can't say what's the definition for a breakfast bread. If you look at Webster's Online Dictionary there is only a definition for the German word, not for the English one. For BBD#02 I already chose a bread from the breakfast bread section in Daniel Leader's Bread Alone, this time I chose Honey Wheat Bread With Poppy Seeds and Lemon I used white poppy seeds, so you only have the crunch but not the black flecks in your bread. Only a hint of lemon emphazises the light sweetness of the bread. I followed the recipe below except the fermenting. After shaping the dough into a ball I did the fermentation in the fridge, becau...

Ultimate Lemon Pound Cake and Lemon Thyme Strawberries
2008-05-09 22:17:00
First of all I would like to thank all of you for leaving such kind comments and sending emails after my last post. I surely did not mean to bring your spirits down and I forwarded each piece of advice and kind notes to M. Like me, she is deeply touched by your thoughts and prayers and was truly amazed by the generosity of bloggers and anonymous alike. I tell you, you guys rock!!Life goes on and she is fully committed to enjoy the time she has and do the things she has been postponing for too long like coming to Pilates with me or dragging me out of bed to go strawberry picking this morning...I know she enjoyed bugging me after the ab torture I made her go through yesterday!! We got caught by the rain, but like many times in May around our parts, it pours ocean for 5 minutes and then the sun shines through as if nothing happened. We picked about 10 pounds of juicy red strawberries, so flavorful I feel the urge to put my nose in the basket every couple of hours. The house has taken o...
Lemon And Honey Tangerine Gratins
2008-05-07 18:04:00
Everyday I wake up I count my blessings. Everynight I go to bed I think about the things I need to improve and realize that both my blessings and my shortcomings are numerous which makes me a standard-normal human being, and I am ok with that. What I am not ok with is being helpless when faced with death or diseases and which I were a rocket scientist or super duper doctor working on some cure to help people. There are days I want to kick for not being a brainie and there are days I am fulfilled to focus on the things I know how to do, we all have to find our strong points and should stick to them. Being envious is a waste of time: maybe a rocket scientist can't make a good a pie as my grandma's?!!Last Monday we had a couple friends of ours over for dinner, and as usual they came early in the evening so we could sit on the back porch and watch the sunset over the water (one of those blessings I am counting). We like to open a bottle of wine and get dinner ready together. He is an ...

Lemon Rhubarb Mascarpone Mousse Cake
2008-05-03 22:52:00
Yes, another rhubarb post...it's the season and I just can't get enough....Sorry folks! When Marcela was planning her visit, one of her wishes was to get some rhubarb and Meyer lemons so we could bake something with them. She also wanted to keep the seeds of the lemon to grow her own tree back in Argentina. We searched everywhere for both to no avail and decided to stick with our original plan to make macarons instead. She did a fabulous job with the latter and I hope that macarons have no secret for her now and I got to tell you, buttercream and dulce de leche go really really well together!!After dropping her off at the airport, B. and I headed for the farmers' market downtown and guess what I found by the bucket....rhubarb!!! Arghhhhh.....Wish I had it growing in the backyard but one has to do with what they have, right?! I need to add that since I mentioned I had found Loquat trees everywhere downtown, one of my clients told me she had her own tree and I was most welcome to h...

Polish Lemon Cake*
2008-05-02 09:55:00
*Okay, so it’s not really Polish.  But the topping reminded me of a German Chocolate Cake topping, and since (half) my ancestry is Polish, I thought I’d just use the same concept for this cake’s name.    Did you hear the one about the (half) Polish woman who wanted to bake a cake?  Just kidding. All right now! ‘Nuff of those wacky raw dishes we’ve been seeing the last couple of days!! Time for some CAKE. One of the greatest challenges of living in a long-term, committed relationship is dealing with those areas in which you and your partner don’t necessarily mesh.  In order to coexist harmoniously and still retain one’s sanity, it’s sometimes necessary to make accommodations.  (Okay, fine; not only “sometimes,” but pretty much every day.  Okay, fine; several times a day.). Since this union is the second go-round for both the HH and me, we no longer bristle at the petty, quotidien issues that drive some newlyweds...
Lemon And Yogurt Scones And Unexpected Finds
2008-05-01 07:23:00
Marcela is finally here, safe and radiant from her stay in Seattle and New York, ready to chill under the Southern sun. After many late night chats on Yahoo with Lisa over the past year or so, it is a blast to finally laugh in person instead of in front of the computer and discover the many facets of Argentina through her experiences and her eyes. As the nerds that we are, we spent most of the evening of her arrival Tuesday on Google earth checking out the country with the perfect guide. Today was spent downtown Charleston with us showing her some of our favorite places, streets, parks, etc... but I will get to that a little bit later. After my post admitting that I was a clafoutis fanatic, going as far as eating it everyday, I stumbled on a great looking scone post by Julie of A Mingling Of Tastes. Her blog is one of my regular reads where I get my fix of yummy breakfast ideas, and after many weeks of thinking I ought to make scones again, because after all we do like them, she time...

Coconut Panna Cotta - Warm Lemon Poppyseed Cake, Yuzu Mandarin Sauce
2008-04-09 08:02:00
In both my jobs, I work freelance, which means that on Sunday night, the upcoming week on the calendar looks one way and by Tuesday night all the little blocks are filled, scratches and arrows everywhere. By Wednesday morning one side of the fridge (B. has an aversion for magnets and other knickknacks on the front) is completely covered with "production sheets" such as menus, sitting charts, plating, order forms, invoices,.... One could say that my fridge is my office. Where am I going with this?On Sunday night I looked at the calendar and thought this week would be nothing as busy as the week before, which left me a little uncomfortable. I get paid by the event, the gig, the class, the training, which means that a slow week gives me some rest but does not help the pocket book. I admit, I needed a break, it helps regenerate the creative juices and there are a ton of household things awaiting my attention. I am also trying for some extra greens as I have a certain VIB (Very Important B...

The Most Extraordinary French Lemon Cream Tartlets
2008-04-09 00:00:00
Mary of Starting From Scratch has chosen The Most Extraordinary French Lemon Cream Tart for this week’s TWD baking. The recipe for the French Lemon cream comes from Pierre Hermé, "the Picasso of Pastry". This cream reminds you of lemon curd, but instead of stirring and cooking all ingredients together you add the butter after the egg mixture has thickened and cooled. The cream was richer and more extraordinary than my lemon curd: More butter makes the cream silky and luxurious. The chilled cream melts in your mouth and you feel like heaven. Instead of one large tart I made individual tartlets with my new purchased tartlet tins. The taste convinced and I intend to do the Fresh Orange Cream Tart, if I ever lose the gained weight from this one. Unfortunately you need barely 1 pound (428 grams) of butter for the whole recipe, which makes it very rich. But every single kalorie was worth the sin. For more The Most Extraordinary French Lemon Cream Tarts and the recipe in English vi...

Click here for the english version! Tuesdays with Dorie - eine schöne Idee, die einen dazu diszipliniert, regelmäßig aus einem bestimmten Backbuch zu backen. In diesem Fall "Baking From My Home To Yours" von Dorie Greenspan.
The best thing about joining up with the kind, funny, supportive and variously talented ladies of the Tuesdays with Dorie blogger's baking group, has been the confidence that I have gained in my baking skills. From tackling brioche for the first time, to baking my first apple pie-cake, I am continuously stretching the limits of my comfort zone in the kitchen, and I love it! Not every recipe has turned out picture perfect and there have even been a few that I didn't care for, per se; but each recipe that I've made from Dorie Greenspan's beautiful ode to home baking has been a worthy challenge and a gratifying lesson in the art of dessert making.

Ice Cold Lemon Strawberry Fraisier
2008-04-05 01:30:00
An abundance of gorgeous strawberries and extra Grand Marnier Mousseline led me to create this little thing. I called it a Fraisier because it looks like one but that's where the resemblance stops....although by taste it was just as good. Like the choux, a Fraisier is one of my favorite desserts, one I would push my mother to buy for Easter it looked so Spring-like. It usually is compose of a genoise, pastry cream, strawberries and topped with a thin layer of marzipan. Rich in composition and ingredients but light in texture like most French desserts tend to be. It seems like we have a knack to pack a million calories in a bite that seems as light as air!!Here I was with the strawberries, the mousseline cream and no base but a serious hunkering for Meyer lemon. Lemon genoise? Lemon meringue?....hmm...decision, decision, hesitation....That was until I remembered a recipe for "The Best Damm Meyer Lemon Pound Cake" on the Saveur Magazine website. With a claim like that I had to check ...
Spring Risotto: Risotto with Asparagus, Peas, Parsley, and Lemon
2008-04-04 06:55:00
When my mom visits me (which she is currently doing), I love to cook meals for her that she would normally never make for herself. Being that it is supposedly spring (it was 50 degrees in Baltimore on Thursday despite the fact that it was 75 degrees on Tuesday…what is going on???), I decided to make a spring risotto. I had bought a few pounds of asparagus a few days ago in a fit of spring fever, so some of it was definitely going into the risotto. (I bought way more asparagus than I needed for the meal I made a few days ago…sometimes I get carried away.) To further springify the risotto, I added a few things that I always have on hand but are springy nonetheless: peas, parsley, and lemon. Oh, and sauvignon blanc. There’s always New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc in my fridge; I have a slight (read: major) obsession with it. 20 minutes and a little bit of stirring later (yes, just a little – risotto isn’t as fickle and stir-crazy as it’s made out to be...

Lemon Pepper Tilapia
2008-03-31 17:10:00
If you read my blog you know that I use this particular fish often in my menus. The reason is because it is a very mild white fish that the kids will eat every way I prepare it.And it is very inexpensive to have on hand.We do eat other fish, but usually reserve that to a few tuna steaks and salmon here and there. And of course fresh fish when we are camping. One thing I miss about Charleston SC are the weekends when my husband and boys would get up early and catch fresh crabs for crabcakes.Heaven.And I do miss the clam bakes and Frogmore Stew get togethers. In fact,my friend Sarah is having her annual clam bake next weekend at her Daniel Island home.Wish I could be there. This fish recipe is very good.It is so easy to put together and bake.I usually have the green onions, but last night I omitted because I forgot to pick them up at the store.Lemon Pepper Tilapia1 small lemon4 tablespoons butter, softened1 tablespoon fresh chopped parsley3/4 teaspoon salt1/8 teaspoon black pepper 1/8 tsp ga...
