The Men Behind The Bluesmen: Lester Melrose
2009-05-05 09:01:00 Lester Melrose was born on December 14, 1891 and he passed away on April 12, 1968. He was one of the first producers of blues records. According to Wikipedia;...a freelance A & R man, combining the roles of talent scout and record producer. He started to promote many blues artists who became popular, recording them mainly in Chicago. His first big success was "It's Tight Like That" with Tampa Red and soon-to-be gospel music legend Thomas A. Dorsey, then still known as Georgia Tom.He worked for several record companies simultaneously in the 1930s, including RCA Victor and its subsidiary Bluebird records, Columbia records, and Okeh Records. Phillies Upend Dodgers; Rays Shock The Formerly Invinicble Jon Lester
2008-10-14 17:25:00 The 2008 NLCS seems close to being wrapped up as the Philadelphia Phillies thanks to late homers by Shane Victorino -- who has seemed to be in the middle of everything -- and Matt Stair's long shot in the 8th led them over the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-5.Tuesday's action had none of the drama of the previous night, and Philadelphia staged a dramatic comeback as the knocked up the Los Angeles bullpen in the latter half of the game. Derek Lowe was strong -- especially giving up two runs in the first inning -- and went only five innings; however, he kept the Dodgers in the game long for them to take the lead in the bottom of fifth by taking a 3-2 lead. Now, why he was taken out by Joe Torre early -- who knows (maybe it's the fact he pitched on 3 days rest); however, that decision might have cost the Dodgers.Joe Blanton -- the starting pitcher for the Phillies -- went five innings and gave up three runs, but it was Chad Durbin who opened up the flood gates by giving up a 2-run-homer to C...

Lester Pummeled As Tampa Bay Tilts The Red Sox 9-1
2008-10-14 10:51:00 After a tremendous pitching effort in game one, the Boston Red Sox have seen two terrible outings. One, of course, was from the injured and hurting Josh Beckett. And the second was from Mr. Dependable, dependable until yesterday. Jon Lester gave up five runs in only 5 2/3 innings as the Red Sox went down to Tampa Bay by a score of 9-1. It was 5-0 after Tampa Bay's top half of the third, and I'm sorry to say, against Matt Garza, it was over. Finished. Gone. Garza worked six full, giving up only one earned run on six hits, walking three but striking out five. That's a far cry from Lester's numbers, and Paul Byrd in relief was no better, although he did save the Boston bullpen from unneeded work...here's what manager Tito Francona & Jon Lester had to say after the important defeat, thoughts of Lester and Matt Garza...?I didn?t stay away from the big inning,? Lester said in a quiet Red Sox clubhouse. ?You can?t give them momentum like that.??It certainly wasn?t his sharpest outing,...
Game Three - Boston Red Sox & Tampa Bay Rays...JON LESTER IS IN THE BUILDI
2008-10-13 11:35:00 Boston Red Sox baseball returns to Fenway Park today, Monday, October 13th. Happy Coumbus Day to every one of you. The weather will be downright perfect with sunny skies and temperatures in the very low to mid 70s for those of you lucky enough to be holding onto tickets for the important contest. The Red Sox have their best pitcher going. Jon Lester will face the sometimes tough Matt Garza in front of 38,000 plus of the Fenway Faithful. The shadows will affect those players in the batting box, which has to give a slim advantage to the lefty Lester. But he's been lights out this year day or night. The game will start at 4:37pm EDT and the winner will have a 2-1 series lead with two more games coming up at Fenway tomorrow and Thursday. If needed, the last two games will be Saturday and Sunday down at the Trop. But first things first...what happened to Josh Beckett? Here is what he and manager Terry "Tito" Francona had to say on that very subject..."I can understand it," Beckett said ...

Lester AL Pitcher Of The Month...Drew, Lowell Might Play In Anaheim
2008-09-30 11:42:00 Jon Lester was named American League Pitcher of the Month (Sept.) for the second time this year. In September, he was 4-1 with a sparkling ERA of 2.17. He struck out 28 and walked 14. And the buzz around Boston and all of Red Sox Nation is one of hope and eternal faith. As for Josh Beckett, no news is good news, I guess. He will throw on the sidelines Thursday in preparation for his Sunday Fenway Park start. I have a funny feeling that he'll be fine and the Sox will have split the first two games in California, winning game one and falling short in game two. But, as Bruce (the Boss, who is playing the Super Bowl halftime show-WITH the E Street Band. How great is that?) would say..."living in the future and none of this has happened yet." Here are a couple comments about Josh, Daisuke and Jon..."We love what Beckett can do and we respect what Beckett can do," Francona said Monday. "We're starting to get that feeling about Lester.""You want Josh Beckett to go for you," Kevin Youkili...
Red Sox Ace Jon Lester KO's Tribe...Boston Red Sox 6 Cleveland Indians 1
2008-09-26 11:38:00 Jon Lester led the Boston Red Sox to a 6-1 Thursday night Fenway Park victory, ending the season series with the Indians. And he did it in style, not allowing a hit until the sixth inning. Lester was on a Tito Francona-imposed pitch count of 85, and even if the no hitter was intact through six, he would have come out of the game. Think of all the boos that would have echoed throughout the park! Lester becomes the first Red Sox lefty to win at least 16 games since Bruce Hurst accomplished the feat in 1988. He also became the first Sox lefty to top 200 ininngs pitched since Frankie Viola in 1992. With that in mind, he said this..."For me, I associate that (200 plus innings) with guys like a Beckett, Andy Pettitte, Roger Clemens, guys that are pretty much the horses of the team," Lester said. "They're going to go out there and pound the strike zone and give you good efforts every night. That's an honor to me, to get to that number. Early on, I struggled a little bit in April. Beginni...
Lester Dominant As Sox Take 3 Of 4 From The Jays...Boston 4 Toronto 3
2008-09-15 11:17:00 Sunday afternoon's series finale with the Toronto Blue Jays ended up to be a one run game, but that's the way it was until the Sox scored single runs in the 7th and the 8th. But first things first...let's give credit where credit is due. Jon Lester was simply superb, going 8 full and giving up a single run on 4 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 6. He has become one of the 3 top lefthanders in all of major league baseball. Bar none. Jonathon Papelbon came into the 4-1 game to finish Boston's third win out of four from the Jays and it was quickly nailbiting time. Two runs came across on 3 hits before Jason Bay threw out Lyle Overbay after taking the carom, Yaz-like, off the wall. Overbay might have snuck his hand in before Pedey's tag was applied, but the ump might have been blocked on the play. Paps regained his senses and recorded the final 2 outs. Again, the location of his fastball has to be his major concern - the velocity is there. Nothing else he threw was anywhere near whe...

2008-09-14 22:59:00 Despite a little scare from Jonathan Papelbon in the 9th inning, Jon Lester outdueled Roy Halladay to help the Boston Red Sox to a 4-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in front of 37,007 at Fenway Park. The win for the Red Sox narrows the gap to just 1 game in the AL East as ...

Lester does job again as BoSox get win
2008-08-19 09:13:00 Before he came to the Boston Red Sox, Jason Bay didn’t know much about Jon Lester. Bay likes what he’s seen. And, to be sure, the Red Sox are also pretty pleased about what they’ve witnessed thus far from their new left fielder. YOUK And LESTER Fuel Red Sox Victory...Boston 8 Texas 4
2008-08-14 11:39:00 Jon Lester recorded his 15th quality start of the year Wednesday night at Fenway Park as the Red Sox pummeled Texas pitching once again in an 8-4 victory. The Sox belted out 12 hits in support of the lefthander, and Lester blanked the Rangers until the 8th inning, when Mike Timlin relieved him after a Texas run came across and two men were on base. The boos echoed around Fenway as Timlin promptly gave up a 3 run home run to Milton Bradley. Two of those runs were charged to Lester, who deserved a better fate, but by then the Sox had an insurmountable lead. Lopez bailed Timlin out of the 8th and Masterson made it official by pitching a one hit, one walk scoreless ninth. A great job by Jon Lester. Here's what a nameless baseball scout, someone who knows his baseball inside and out, said about Lester... "He's becoming one of the premier lefthanders in the game," the scout said. "He's starting to be one of those guys the team can depend on every time he pitches. Now he's getting domi...

Steinbrenner praises Lester no-no
2008-05-21 12:49:00 New York Yankees boss Hank Steinbrenner, who watched highlights of Jon Lester's no-hitter Monday night, said he hopes some of his younger pitchers can begin performing like Lester did the Boston Globe reported. "Obviously, a great, great story," said Steinbrenner on his cell phone. "Certainly both Lester and [Clay] Buchholz are tremendous young pitchers and it shows you what a good job Boston has done developing those two kids. You have to develop your own. Nobody's going to give you talent like that."Asked whether it bothers him that the two young Sox starters have pitched so well and his youngsters have struggled, Steinbrenner said, "Well, I think Joba [Chamberlain] has a chance to do that eventually once he's in the starting rotation. I think the kid we drafted last year [Andrew] Brackman has that chance. And I think Philip Hughes and Ian Kennedy will also eventually show what they can do. The AL East is gonna be tough in the future. There are a lot of good young pitchers in t...

My Take & Experience of Jon Lester's No-Hitter Last Night
2008-05-20 19:19:00 Jon Lester Celebrates his no hitter last night. (AP Photo) Yesterday as I sat in Ticketmaster hell trying to get tickets to Game 2 of the Celtic Eastern Conference Finals I decided that since I wasn't going to be able to go to the C's game, I might as well piggy back with a couple of my friends who were already going to the Sox game (Krazy Kris & Dr. J). The night started off fairly inconspicuous as we headed over to Cornwall's in Kenmore Square after work to get some grub and shoot some pool. I bounced early because I still didn't have a ticket and scalped a grandstand seat in Section 24 for face value. The scalper (please note I hate all scalpers, but sometimes ya' gotta do what ya' gotta do) tried to charge me $70 for the ticket, but I talked him down to the face of $45 explaining that: A) This was a Grandstand seat B) The Royals were in town C) It was a cool night in May Best $45 I ever spent that's for sure. I ran into some other friends randomly on my way ...

As if his story wasn't great already, Lester throws no-hitter
2008-05-20 13:14:00 Let's throw in a no-hitter for good measure. There are times these days when one wonders what New England sports fans did to deserve this glut of riches wrote Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy. On Sunday, Paul Pierce and LeBron James engaged in one of the great Game 7 duels in NBA history and tonight the Celtics play Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals. Our thrice-crowned local football team is coming off an 18-1 Super Bowl season, and the Red Sox are defending world champions. And last night Jon Lester threw a no-hitter, blanking the Kansas City Royals, 7-0, at Fenway Park — just to remind us that we are in the middle of baseball season. Jon Lester is 24 years old. He's a cancer survivor. He's the winner of the clinching game of the 2007 World Series. Now he's the first Sox lefty to throw a no-hitter since Mel Parnell turned the trick against the Chicago White Sox in 1956. It was the first complete game of Lester's major league career."He's a wonderful kid, not...

***JON LESTER NO-HITS ROYALS 7-0***
2008-05-20 12:01:00 130 pitches, 9 strikouts, 2 walks, 11 groundouts, 7 flyouts and only 29 batters faced. Oh, and ZERO HITS allowed! Jon Lester made history Monday night at Fenway Park by pitching his first complete game and first no-hitter. The Red Sox beat the visiting KC Royals 7-0. The fans were loud, and by loud I mean LOUD, and after the ninth inning ended with a strikeout, Lester raised his arms in triumph as first Varitek and then the rest of his team mobbed him. It's only been two years since Lester's grim cancer diagnosis, and boy, has he come a long way. Terry Francona had tears in his eyes as he spoke about his releationship with the young pitcher and his performance on the mound. Here's what he had to say..."I looked up in the ninth and you're trying to keep your emotions in check," manager Terry Francona said, "and I went to say something to John Farrell and he was being a big baby next to me. It made me feel a little bit better. This probably isn't fair to say, but I feel like my s...
