Letters to the Editor

I ghost-wrote letters to the editor for the McCain campaign
2008-09-25 03:41:00
I spent a morning in John McCain’s Virginia campaign headquarters ghost-writing letters to the editor for McCain supporters to sign. I even pretended to have a son in Iraq. Editor’s note: The following article was originally published on Sept. 13 in Dutch in the newspaper NRC Handelsblad, where Margriet Oostveen writes a weekly column called “Message ...
"Tip of the Week" - The PR Value of Letters To The Editor
2008-01-27 06:02:00
Hat tip to Paramjit Mahli over at Profiting With Public Relations for this important reminder about the great PR value of a Letter to the Editor that costs you nothing but can reap great rewards:How many times have you read a newspaper article about a topic  that is your area of interest and legal expertise —and felt disheartened and disappointed that you were not the person who was being quoted? How could you be quoted, the reporter doesn't know who you are and what you do. Here’s what you do: Write a letter to the editor referencing the article and the date it was published.  In the body of the letter, you have several options you can: (1) Present a different view point. (2) Agree with original letter writer's viewpoint and expand on the issue (no longer than a few paragraphs). (3) Showcase your expertise by introducing  a little-known fact or issue related to the subject of interest to the public. It is important to note that letters to the editor a...

OnlineAthens.com wrote: James Garland: Defending gun lawsuit will waste tax dollars Story updated at 6:07 PM on Thursday, December 13, 2007 I certainly hope my tax dollars will not go toward defending the Athens-Clarke County government’s prohibition of the otherwise legal practice of carrying firearms in local parks. As a legal matter, the pre-emption statute incorporated into the state ...

Yesterday, Judge Sidney H. Stein of Federal District Court in Manhattan ruled against Debbie Almontaser, the former principal of the Khalil Gibran International Academy, New York’s first Arabic-themed school, in Brooklyn.  Debbie was pressured to step down after her discussion of the word “intifada” during a press conference in August.  The word had been used on a t-shirt, ...

Letters To The Editor
2007-08-04 04:29:00
Dear Ray:Thank you for taking the time to provide such helpful information about Elder Abuse and for making it available for victims and for people like me, concerned family members. My father is a VERY "with-it", yet grumpy at times, 83 years young. He and my brother work in our family business and have done so for over 20 years. My father has worked hard all of his life only for one single reason - to be certain that my brother and myself will be financially secure when he will no longer be with us. My dad is never concerned about himself. He is most happy when he is able to help one of us, or anyone needing help. I for one, as his daughter, have nothing but enormous respect and love for him. I have always followed the belief that we as children are to honor and respect our elders and parents.I have just learned that my brother, who will be 60 this year, has been physically abusing our father during frequent arguments at the office. There is a long history of verbal arguments and l...

Underpaid women: Stupid Letters to the Editor
2007-07-26 03:07:00
You know, I have no one to blame but myself. I know how the National Post makes my head spin, and yet some macabre force compells me to read it. Anyways, today I found this little gem of a letter to the editor:Underpaid womenRe: Why Men Earn More, editorial, July 23.The bottom line is that if women want to earn as much as men, they have to behave like men in the employment marketplace. That usually means: work longer hours at intellectually challenging, personally unrewarding careers that offer a poor workplace environment, physical hazards, pay linked to performance, an imposition on nonworking lifestyle choices or some combination of the above.Furthermore, women would have to take on more responsibilities, make family sacrifices and be more productive in the jobs they have. That's how men do it. Women can do it too, if they so choose. Now I could politely tell the author to climb back into the cave from whence he came, and let us women go back to eating bonbons while our menfolk h...

Letters to the Editor

During a recent conversation with a friend who works for a newspaper, I came to know a lot of unknowns about ?Letters To The Editors.? For the average Joe (and that doesn?t mean the 165 cms tall Joe living in Texas, US) Letters to the Editors mean nothing, but if you are a journalist and ...
Letters to the Editor
2007-05-31 13:41:00
An interesting "Letter to the Editor" in the Eagle this morning from Billsville resident and sometimes thorn in the side of Williams College Ray Warner. It seems the college has rewarded the Track and Field coach, Ralph White, for winning the Division III Women's national championship by giving him...the boot. I dug around a bit, and found Dave Fehr's "Advocate" column mention by Mr. Warner, and an interesting exchange on the "Ephblog" concerning the "non-renewal" of his contract. What gives, Williams College? This is reminiscent of the canning of Baseball coach Dave Barnard last year. Win too much, complain too much, push for better athletic facilities, and out you go.My apologies to Adam Bloch and the Transcript. Here's Adam's account of the story, from last Thursday's T. Thanks to glennd for the heads up...

Becoming a Citizen-Activist, Part Three: Letters to the Editor
2007-03-30 15:20:00
Just as important as voicing your views to the decision-makers on local issues (see parts One and Two of this series) is mobilizing support amongst local people in your community for Green Issues. An easy and very important way to do this is through your local newspaper. Local news is where ideas are hashed out? Local media tends to be much less dominated by corporate interests than national or even regional media, and as a result can take firmer stances on pro-conservation, anti-development issues. Even if a local media outlet is unwilling to take a stand on an issue, they are often quite willing to give voice to that issue through involved readers. That?s where you come in. Writing a letter to the editor is as easy as typing an email. Submissions to the Editorial page don?t need to be extremely verbose, or even well-spoken. They do, however, need to be well-thought out and respectful. Angry jabs or diatribes will rarely get printed in a newspaper. Well-reasoned arguments, h...
