Despite Sending Many Letters, the USOC Has Only Brought Three Suits Since 2
2009-09-21 06:33:00
For all of the reasons discussed here, here, and here, STL has not been a fan of the United States Olympic Committee’s efforts to enforce its near monopoly rights in the U.S. over commercial&-nbsp;use of the word “Olympic.” Is- anyone really going to think the “Olympic Pizzeria” that exists in almost every town has anything to do with the Olympic Games? Nonetheless, the USOC hasn’t appeared to hesitate to dash off cease-and-desist letters to the owners of such establishments, sometimes causing small businesses to go through the expensive and disruptive process of changing their name. That’s particularly painful around here, where hundreds of companies (500 by this business owner’s count) have taken the name of the Olympic Peninsula, the Olympic Mountains, and Olympic National Park as their own. That said, the USOC has been much more circumspect about filing suit. I found it...

Dear God,
2009-08-28 16:22:00
I know that you and I haven't always been close. I don't have to remind you of the issues I had with you when I was a kid. You know, the whole, where are you when I need you, thing. But then again, I guess I can't complain, seeing as what your own son gave up for us and all.Though I have questioned your existence periodically, in my heart, I do think you are out there. It's just difficult to comprehend at times, when there are so many bad things in the world. So much hurt. So much anger. But, belief in you must also bring belief in evil, I suppose. And I know that I don't attend church very often. Some will find fault with me for that. But I have my reasons and none really have anything to do with you. I've never felt comfortable in the institution of my faith. Something never seemed quite right.I talk to you. I thank you. I praise you. I just don't find the need to do so in a building. Only you could understand my innermost thoughts and you can do that no matter where I am. P...

Rejection Letters on Display
2009-07-14 05:44:00
Rejection letter recipients of Chicagoland, rejoice! As if this past weekend's rejection letter shred-and-catapult wasn't fun enough, now, truly absurd rejection letters can be cause for online publication on a blog-gem I stumbled across recently called Literary Rejects on Display.I'll let the blog speak for itself, but I would like to point to a few posts bearing a particular level of snicker-worthy greatness including:"More Lesbian Sex, Please (Less Story)""Your Entire Gender Is Unprofitable""Your Work is Gross or Disgusting In Nature"and "It's Not Us, It's You"The blog also includes an archived post concerning how to rate your own literary performance, as explained via "the progression you make, without stress, without writer's block, without angst", which-- okay, I'll admit it-- I geek...
Cultural Norms As Law Enforcement Mechanism. Why Demand Letters Still Work
2009-07-07 13:12:00
Wikipedia defines a demand letter as a "letter stating a legal claim (usually drafted by a lawyer) which makes a demand for restitution or performance of some obligation, owing to the recipients' alleged breach of contract, or for a legal wrong." Typically, these letters conclude with the lawyer threatening to sue or the non-lawyer letter writer threatening to go his or her attorney. Such letters have become so commonplace in the United States that they most of the time fail to instill much fear into or much action from their recipient. I know of some lawyers who no longer will write such letters, believing that US companies will not seriously discuss any settlement until sued. I know of a company that manufactures a somewhat dangerous product and it receives maybe 100 lawsuit threatening letters a year from around the world. Before I started representing this company, they would respond to every letter by seeking a quick out of court settlement. I convinced them to change...

2009-06-24 16:30:00
Photo Credit: Leslie Hindman Auctioneers I just got a tip that two letters written by Queer Activist Harvey Milk will go on the auction block in July. I found out that Leslie Hindman Auctionneers has obtained two letters penned by the famed Queer Activist in the 50's.  A time when he was enlisted in the Navy as a diving officer and worlds before he became a Gay Rights Activist in the 70's.  The letters were written to his friend Patrick Morman, whom he met while he was serving in the Navy. The first of the two letters was written as Milk was about to enjoy a 10 day furlough and travel to Dallas, TX to meet a  man who...

Rejection Letters
2009-04-09 03:07:00
Lorina Stephens, author of Shadow Song reviewed here previously, has posted to her blog the rejection letters she received from the mainstream press before turning to self-publishing. I found the letters -- the reasons she was given by various publishers for not publishing her historical cultural fantasy novel -- fascinating, both as someone who read and loved the book, and as an aspiring writer myself. I asked Lorina if I could reprint her column here; my own commentary on the letters follows: ======================== Every writer gets them, those dreaded letters, forms, slips of paper or, more currently, emails that either cryptically or in detail describe why it is their work won't be appearing on that publisher's list.Given the reviews and success I'm meeting as a self-published author, who grew weary with excuses and the ritual of the publishing world, I thought I'd post five of many rejections I received for my novel, Shadow Song. You may, or may not, find them of inter...

We don't even HAVE razors on this unit, and I'd like to think that no one you know would be stupid enough to bring you one. Now then, let's say I don't even think you are a suicide risk. Let's pretend that my nursing license means nothing to me. Do you seriously want to be the only person in a lock down unit full of crazy people with a razor?Trying to keep your stupid ass alive,HoneybellDear Escape Artist,Dude. You are VOLUNTARY. The Hundred Letters of Sharafuddin Maneri, the Sufi Saint of Bengal
2008-12-17 04:52:00
1.Imagine the power of few correspondences in form of letters during the medieval period between two persons, which were so rich in their content that the letters were copied by seekers of truth, was kept as priced possession by kings and rulers and were made compulsory text in religious schools (madrasas), where the letters were not only read but fractionally memorized as part of the religious, spiritual education. These letters after compiled became known as The Hundred Letters and were written by a celebrated saint of Bengal, Sharafuddin Maneri (1263 - 1381). The Hundred Letters was prized among all the sufi circles of medieval India. Known by the title "The spiritual Teacher of the Realm", Sharafuddin Maneri, may God be pleased with him, is venerated as one of the most famous Islamic saints (awliya Allah) and sufi master.2. Context of the LettersThe then governor of Chausa, Bihar (northeast India), Qazi Shamsuddin frequently petitioned the spiritual master Sharafuddin Maneri to s...

Writing love letters

With the world turning literally virtual and technical, simple (but ancient) practices can easily be forgotten. Take love letters. With Six Letters, Three Cauldrons Of One Torah

?"? ???? ????"?Faunus 19Scribal oddity of two 'n's as found in Torah scroll (shown aove). The Celtic Ogham alphabet of the Druids is called Beth-Luis-Nuin. Through designating the Ogham alphabet beth-luis-nuin, in some manner then, the three letters (beth, luis, nuin) call out the soul of the Ogham into active creative manifestation. In other words, the letters symbolize the three creative rays of Awen, and the creative energy of the Divine Feminine known in kabbalah as hashra'ah.From the perspective of a Jewitch, beth-luis-nuin have correspondences to the Hebrew letters Beit-Lamed-Nun. Reader's letters #1: should we all go back to the iron age?
2008-06-07 01:01:00
We do get emails from time to time, and as far as I'm concerned, whatever mail is received is between you and us unless you state otherwise (and unless you're a particularly juicy specimen of our opponents). So when we were challenged to publish an email we received the other day, it has to be fair game to do so. A gentleman by the name of David Bridge sent this email, so below we'll outline the questions asked (bold) with my response (italics):You appear to be against everything that Glossop wants to progress in modern societyNo one knows what 'Glossop wants' because, as far as we are aware, no one has asked the people of Glossop. Or at least asked in a way that elicits a truthful and considered answer. What Glossop wants, is not the same thing as what High Peak Borough Council wants, nor what David Jones at the Glossop Chronic wants, nor anything that comes out of the mouths of the local bourgeoisie. If progression means the slow strangulation of the High Street and the const...

Beaded Letters
2008-06-02 16:31:00
I hope everyone had a great weekend. I was busy working on the beaded letters for my Boston Citgo sign. Each letter only measures approx. 1.5" - 2" wide, but for some reason they take a long time to bead! I am using 4 different blues - 3 transparent ones and one silver-lined blue. I'm also using several grays and black. Altogether, I counted 11 different types of seed beads! I chose these colours because I want the sign to look dark. Like a neon sign that is not lit. I'm stitching the beads onto felt with backstitch in the same direction of the LED tubing that is on the real Citgo sign in Kenmore Square. Hopefully, when I put everything together (including my beaded Boston trolley) it will all make sense. But, first I have to figure out how to do that. Wish me luck! :D
How To Get Rid Of Bad Information On Your Credit Report By Writing Letters

Assuming you already have a copy of your annual credit report you may have already found some errors that should be removed. Many graduates think that the six months they have before the required scheduled repayment of their various college debts seems like forever. The six months is nothing compared to the years and years of payments ahead of you. A consolidation of student loans can make the monthly much less painful. Read more about finance and student loans.

Letters to Editor -A Most Terrifying Story
2008-05-30 06:06:00
I would like to tell my families most terrifying story, of abuse and neglect. It is abuse of a good law gone badly, abuse by the very court system that is supposed to be protecting our elderly and disabled. It is an abuse that is going on all over the US. This abuse is happening with the courts of our states approval. The judges and attorneys, and people that are appointed to care for and guard from abuse, are the very ones who are doing the abusing. My mother in-law was taken from the safety of her home kicking and screaming by Adult Protective Services, she was hidden from her husband and family, in ICU and observed for a week. Within 3 to 4 days of taking her, she fell and had to have stitches in her knee, with in a week and a half, she was in a vegetated state, all while in the care of the court and its appointed guardians. You see, she had Alzheimers, I had known her at this time over 25 years, and she had always bruised easily, all her life. We do not know who for sure, called APS...
