Oh God I hate the Lib Dems! 4p tax cut my arse!
2007-07-12 13:20:00
So the Lib Dems master stroke is to propose a 4p cut in income tax, what a complete and utter load of bollocks. It would be fantastic if what you got was what it said on the tin, but you don't. They plan to pay for this tax cut by - yes you guessed it: taxing us in other ways! Do they think that the public are stupid enough not to realise that they will being given a tax cut with one hand, while the other takes it away? Not only that, but it will cost the country extra to implement these new taxes, what a bunch of incompetent cretins. They also plan to raise money to cover the cut by taxing the well-off even more. I'm in no way well-off, in fact I'm positively working class and I cannot see why the rich should subsidise the rest of us. They should pay their fair share but that is all they should pay. Thousands of people are leaving this country every day and this kind of stupidity is only going to increase that flood.Sir Menzies said: "Our new proposals will put fairness at the h...

Lib Dems won't do a 'Lib Dem'
2007-06-18 14:33:00
A while back, I wrote a post titled Red + Green = Brown. It seems I was being more prophetic than I had intended, since it was written on the day Gordon Brown came to town. From that moment, the Red-Green deal has had a whole lot more momentum. Why?Well, Gordon doesn't really fancy beginning his premiership with two rogue Celtic states gnawing at his ankles. A rainbow coalition in Wales would see the Tories back in power and would give David Cameron a huge PR boost. Worse still, Labour would look like a party of opposition again.New Labour arguably won the last two general elections on the waning momentum of their enormous first victory in 1997. Ten years ago, Tony Blair had his cake and ate it, feeding on a Britain bloated with optimism. Now, there's barely a crumb of that good will left. Gordon Brown is going to have to rebuild. Scotland is already lost, but he can't afford to lose too much more ground. Rhodri Morgan says he spoke to the PM in waiting about the situation in Wale...
Plaid won't do a 'Lib Dem'
2007-06-13 13:22:00
There's been a lot of chatter over the past few hours about Plaid re-opening talks with Labour over a formal coalition. Some of the usual suspects, bless them, have been getting quite upset. Stomp, stomp, stomp. We want our bloody rainbow.Well, as I said yesterday, they are still odds on to get it. So kem down.Have any of Plaid's rainbowista AMs publicly changed their position? No.Has Plaid's leader given any indication that he's keen on a deal with Labour? No.Has Gordon Brown suggested that he'd whip up Labour MPs to get a referendum on further powers through parliament? No (in fact Tomos Livingstone reports Labour MPs saying quite the opposite). Were Tory and Plaid AMs drinking together in the Eli Jenkins last night? Probably.Do we know who the identity of the 'senior source' that broke the red-green story? No.Worth bearing in mind, I think, that I've seen people quoted as 'senior sources' before who were fourth placed constituency candidates in the assembly election. Can ...
Scotland In Crisis After Lib Dems Refuse Coalition with SNP
2007-05-07 09:14:00
Scotland was in turmoil last night after Liberal Democrat leader Nicol Stephen refused Alex Salmond's offer of a share in a coalition government. Stephen demanded that the SNP instantly drop their demands for a referendum on independence. In a powerful statement issued after two days of talks Stephen said that the way was now open for nationalists to try to form a minority government as the
Lib Dem update: 'we're set for second place'
2007-05-04 03:06:00
After all that fuss about Newport East, Lib Dems are now saying they are set for second in Newport East, Monmouth, Swansea East and West. And despite a huge effort, second in Ceredigion too.We got all excited about the prospect of a Lib Dem constituency gain. Doesn't look like it's going to happen. Still, they're in with a shout for a couple of regionals.
It's between Labour and the Lib Dems here
2007-04-15 20:50:00
Haven't you heard? The whole of Cardiff is a two-horse race between Labour and the Lib Dems. At least that's what they will tell you.Laughing in the face of the actual statistics, the Lib Dems argue with some gall that 'everyone knows the Conservatives and Plaid can't win here'. Well, it's news to me, and news to Tory candidate Jonathan Morgan too I'm sure; he'll be devastated to learn he has no chance in Cardiff North despite being 6,400 votes closer to Labour than his Lib Dem counterpart. So, how do they do it? Surely it's not an outright lie? No, even for politicians that would be going too far. Instead, the Lib Dems cheekily use council election results to calculate their graphs, making it look as if they are in second place, whereas they are actually in third. But where they genuinely lead, as in Cardiff Central, suddenly the council election results are an irrelevance and assembly election history is of primary importance. The most staggering thing about this ploy is th...
Somebody save the Lib Dems!
2007-03-20 09:42:00
Concern is mounting for the well-being of the Welsh Liberal Democrat Party, missing for almost nine days. They were last seen at the Richard Ley Development Centre in Swansea for their Spring Conference a week last Sunday. Police are said to be puzzled by a note left on their website, claiming that the conference is still the Lib Dems' 'top story'. They were alerted after a link to 'today's conference update' brought up information over a week old. UK party leader, Sir Menzies Campbell, has issued an impassioned plea for information. He said: "Conferences are only supposed to last two or three days. Either the Welsh Lib Dems are still in Swansea, frantically finalising plans for a policy a second between now and the election, or something terrible has happened."Conspiracy theories have already started to emerge, among them the suggestion that they've already teamed up with another party two months ahead of schedule.

Lib Dems attack increase in ministers' use of cars
2007-03-02 16:15:06
CAR travel by ministers and officials has risen by a fifth despite the Government's high-profile battle against climate change, it was claimed today. Whitehall's fleet of vehicles covered nearly three million miles last year, enough to travel to the moon and back six times, according to figures obtained by the Lib Dems. Their transport spokesman, Alistair Carmichael, accused the Government of failing to "lead by example", adding: "Transport accounts for over a quarter of the UK's CO2. Ministers need to start leading by example." The taxpayer will shell out around £18 million for ministers' and officials' car journeys this year, and Whitehall uses more than 200 chauffeurs, he said. "It is time to bring these spiralling costs under control. The Government must justify this massive increase in ministerial car use," Mr Carmichael added. The figures released by the Government Car and Despatch Agency show its fleet tra...
