Lisbon Treaty - Lib Dems - the most dishonest party?
2008-05-21 07:48:00
Last night Tory peer Lord Blackwell proposed a motion to make it law that a referendum is held on whether Britain joins the Euro. The motion was defeated by 195 votes to 135. Now this is a surprise seeing as Labour promised to hold a referendum on the Euro during their 1997 election campaign. Why would they vote against their own policy? As Lord Strathclyde said: there was "something very fishy" about the government's refusal to back its own policy. I wonder if Gordon Brown has promised the other European heads of state that we will join the Euro shortly after ratifying the Lisbon Constitution Treaty. If that is the case, then this is another example of Brown denying the people their democratic right to vote. There's a good chance that if entering the Euro did go to a referendum we (like the Lisbon Treaty) would vote NO. And Gordon can't let that happen. It looks very much like Gordon Brown is going to railroad us into the Lisbon Treaty, shortly followed by forcing the Euro on us....
Timing is everything. Lib Dems and the EU.

After last nights vote on the Lisbon Treaty referendum it's fair to say that I was not in the best of moods. Imagine how pleased I was to find a Focus News Letter from my local Lib Dem councillor on my doorstep this morning. I thought about writing something unpleasant on it and posting it back through the offending councillors own letterbox. After a few deep breaths I thought that such action would be too severe so I considered just screwing it up and pushing it through his letterbox. In the end I just dropped it in the bin with the rest of the rubbish.Later I found my Conservative MEP ballot paper on my doorstep. Obviously I can't say who I ranked as my number one choice. On a totally different tack: that Daniel Hannan seems like a nice chap.
Lisbon Treaty - I would leave the Lib Dems.
2008-02-28 15:09:00
I've had enough of Nick Clegg and his deceitful policy on the Lisbon Treaty. It's policy designed to dodge the real question. The problem is that granting a referendum on the treaty should be the most important aim in politics today. Some Lib Dem bloggers understand this and so do many Lib Dem members. The farce of an "in or out" vote, and the pantomime we saw in the house on Tuesday should turn their stomachs. Very few people in this country want an "in or out " vote, but the majority do want a vote on the Lisbon Treaty. Nick Clegg and his front bench know this, and yet they still insist on putting up this smokescreen. Many of those who oppose a referendum love to tell us that the public aren't interested. I assure you they will be if they don't get one. What Clegg and Brown must understand is this: there are many members of their respective parties who do understand the situation and do care passionately about the public's democratic right to have their promised referendum. Th...
Lib Dems plan to ban gas-guzzlers by 2040
2007-09-18 19:48:00
At their annual conference in Brighton, the Liberal Democrats have passed a whole range of proposals which they are calling ‘Zero Carbon Britain’. Under the party’s proposals to make the UK carbon neutral by 2050, the Liberal Democrats would also set a target for 30 per cent of UK electricity to come from non-carbon emitting sources by 2020 and 100 per cent by 2050. I wish politicians would not throw phrases like ‘Zero Carbon’ around with such abandon. It is misleading to suggest that we can run economies like ours without producing some CO2. The objective should be to reduce it as much as possible. Whatever solution we end up with, I defy anyone to show me how we can produce the amount of energy we are going to need by 2050 from purely renewable sources.
Oh God I hate the Lib Dems! 4p tax cut my arse!
2007-07-12 13:20:00
So the Lib Dems master stroke is to propose a 4p cut in income tax, what a complete and utter load of bollocks. It would be fantastic if what you got was what it said on the tin, but you don't. They plan to pay for this tax cut by - yes you guessed it: taxing us in other ways! Do they think that the public are stupid enough not to realise that they will being given a tax cut with one hand, while the other takes it away? Not only that, but it will cost the country extra to implement these new taxes, what a bunch of incompetent cretins. They also plan to raise money to cover the cut by taxing the well-off even more. I'm in no way well-off, in fact I'm positively working class and I cannot see why the rich should subsidise the rest of us. They should pay their fair share but that is all they should pay. Thousands of people are leaving this country every day and this kind of stupidity is only going to increase that flood.Sir Menzies said: "Our new proposals will put fairness at the h...
Lib Dems pledge to end 'CAP millionaires' and introduce TB badger cull
2007-07-01 18:27:00
Liberal Democrat leader Menzies Campbell has paid a visit to the Royal Show to promote a new set of policies for rural areas which include badger culling in TB hotspot areas and clawing back support from what it terms 'CAP millionaires'
Lib Dems won't do a 'Lib Dem'

A while back, I wrote a post titled Red + Green = Brown. It seems I was being more prophetic than I had intended, since it was written on the day Gordon Brown came to town. From that moment, the Red-Green deal has had a whole lot more momentum. Why?Well, Gordon doesn't really fancy beginning his premiership with two rogue Celtic states gnawing at his ankles. A rainbow coalition in Wales would see the Tories back in power and would give David Cameron a huge PR boost. Worse still, Labour would look like a party of opposition again.New Labour arguably won the last two general elections on the waning momentum of their enormous first victory in 1997. Ten years ago, Tony Blair had his cake and ate it, feeding on a Britain bloated with optimism. Now, there's barely a crumb of that good will left. Gordon Brown is going to have to rebuild. Scotland is already lost, but he can't afford to lose too much more ground. Rhodri Morgan says he spoke to the PM in waiting about the situation in Wale...
Pleidiol wyf i'm beth?
2007-05-31 12:11:00
Ydy Cymru'n gwlad yntai'n genedl? Dyna dw i'n gofyn yn fy ngholofn yn Golwg yr wythnos hon.Ymhlith yr holl drafodaethau clymbleidio rhwng y pleidiau wedi'r etholiad, mae'n debyg fod y mater hwn wedi dod i'r brig. Yn ol pob son, roedd yna gwrthwynebiad egwyddorol yn y Blaid Lafur ac ymysg y Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol i'r gair 'cenedl' yn nogfen Plaid Cymru. Yn wir, newidiodd y Blaid Lafur yr is-deitl 'Adeiladu Cenedl' yn nogfen Plaid Cymru i 'Gymru Cryfach' yn ei ddogfen ei hun.Ond beth ar wyneb y ddaear sy?n bod â?r gair 'cenedl'? Wedi?r cyfan, mae?n syniad sydd wedi codi mewn nifer o areithiau amlycaf Gordon Brown.Dwn i ddim. I fi mae Cymru yn gwlad ac yn genedl. Mae Prydain yn wladwriaeth ac mae Ewrop (ar hyn o bryd) yn gawlach llwyr. *******************************-***********************A topic pinched from my column in Golwg this week...One of the sticking points in the post-election coalition negotiations was over the alleged nationalist rhetoric in Plaid Cymru's ...
Lib Dems: what went wrong?
2007-05-24 00:34:00
I haven't been at the Lib Dems' meeting in Llandrindod Wells, but the outcome was hardly surprising giving the monumental struggle within the party that emerged once the election result was announced. Here are a few reasons why I believe it all went pear shaped.: Discontented AMs - Peter Black and Mick Bates publicly announced they would not support a Rainbow Alliance option. Both seemed to prefer four years in opposition to reorganise the party and up their game ahead of 2011. This includes replacing Mike German as leader. OK to clarify, Mick Bates said he wanted Labour to continue in minority government, rather than express dissatisfaction with a rainbow coalition.: Distracted AMs - Kirsty Williams has remained silent, though many suspect she preferred a deal with Labour all along and didn't want the Rainbow Alliance to get off the ground. Now a reluctant contender to replace German at the top.: Worried councillors - the party's councillors sitting in cabinets at four Lib Dem-l...
Scotland In Crisis After Lib Dems Refuse Coalition with SNP
2007-05-07 09:14:00
Scotland was in turmoil last night after Liberal Democrat leader Nicol Stephen refused Alex Salmond's offer of a share in a coalition government. Stephen demanded that the SNP instantly drop their demands for a referendum on independence. In a powerful statement issued after two days of talks Stephen said that the way was now open for nationalists to try to form a minority government as the
It's between Labour and the Lib Dems here
2007-04-15 20:50:00
Haven't you heard? The whole of Cardiff is a two-horse race between Labour and the Lib Dems. At least that's what they will tell you.Laughing in the face of the actual statistics, the Lib Dems argue with some gall that 'everyone knows the Conservatives and Plaid can't win here'. Well, it's news to me, and news to Tory candidate Jonathan Morgan too I'm sure; he'll be devastated to learn he has no chance in Cardiff North despite being 6,400 votes closer to Labour than his Lib Dem counterpart. So, how do they do it? Surely it's not an outright lie? No, even for politicians that would be going too far. Instead, the Lib Dems cheekily use council election results to calculate their graphs, making it look as if they are in second place, whereas they are actually in third. But where they genuinely lead, as in Cardiff Central, suddenly the council election results are an irrelevance and assembly election history is of primary importance. The most staggering thing about this ploy is th...
Somebody save the Lib Dems!
2007-03-20 09:42:00
Concern is mounting for the well-being of the Welsh Liberal Democrat Party, missing for almost nine days. They were last seen at the Richard Ley Development Centre in Swansea for their Spring Conference a week last Sunday. Police are said to be puzzled by a note left on their website, claiming that the conference is still the Lib Dems' 'top story'. They were alerted after a link to 'today's conference update' brought up information over a week old. UK party leader, Sir Menzies Campbell, has issued an impassioned plea for information. He said: "Conferences are only supposed to last two or three days. Either the Welsh Lib Dems are still in Swansea, frantically finalising plans for a policy a second between now and the election, or something terrible has happened."Conspiracy theories have already started to emerge, among them the suggestion that they've already teamed up with another party two months ahead of schedule.
Lib Dems attack increase in ministers' use of cars
2007-03-02 16:15:06
CAR travel by ministers and officials has risen by a fifth despite the Government's high-profile battle against climate change, it was claimed today. Whitehall's fleet of vehicles covered nearly three million miles last year, enough to travel to the moon and back six times, according to figures obtained by the Lib Dems. Their transport spokesman, Alistair Carmichael, accused the Government of failing to "lead by example", adding: "Transport accounts for over a quarter of the UK's CO2. Ministers need to start leading by example." The taxpayer will shell out around £18 million for ministers' and officials' car journeys this year, and Whitehall uses more than 200 chauffeurs, he said. "It is time to bring these spiralling costs under control. The Government must justify this massive increase in ministerial car use," Mr Carmichael added. The figures released by the Government Car and Despatch Agency show its fleet tra...
