Thoughts on Liberalism
2008-05-30 14:13:00 This was originally a reply to a comment by Kevin Tracy to an earlier post about the new Professorship of Conservative Thought at the University of Colorado Boulder, but I didn’t want it to get lost in the comments, so I’ll share it here. I assume that most liberals are liberal for all of the right reasons. They are seeking justice, equality, freedom and a better life. Unfortunately, liberalism can’t provide this if the lessons from history are to be remembered. I probably wouldn’t be somewhat conservative today if I hadn’t been exposed to liberal thinking in college. (I’m never “full-on anything” because nothing in life is perfect). Some of the attractiveness of liberalism to youth comes from being uncertain about ones future. The thought of a “safety net” is always a great thing when the future is uncertain and when someone is just starting off on their journey through life. The same is true during tough economic ti...
What is liberalism anyways?
2008-05-29 22:33:00 Contemporary political discourse commonly takes place in terms of liberal vs. conservative. The former is used synonymous with "left" and the latter synonymous with the "right." From time to time we hear of libertarians who are often see as left on social and right on economic issues. Yet, while modern liberals are left of center, there are other distinct ideologies on the left: social democracy, democratic socialism and Marxist socialism. Equating modern liberals with democratic socialists, as some libertarians or conservatives do, is little more than an extravagant display of what is either ignorance or an over-zealous attempt to show once ideological opponents in a negative light. So what is liberalism? Well there are two main kinds of liberalism: classical liberalism (think Friedrich Van Hayek, CATO Institute, etc...) and modern liberalism (what is simply called liberalism in the U.S.). Both classic and modern liberalism see the advancement of freedom as key to the perpetuation o...
Andrew Min: We are NOT thugs. We are NOT an empire. We are NOT a class-bas
2008-04-02 21:07:00 I meant to link this up when I read it, but I am very easily distracted, so I forgot. Andrew Min wrote a great article on Newsvine about the far left’s typical attacks on our country. Check it out: #3: America != Nazism This one really ticks me off. We are not Nazis, and anyone who says that obviously knows it. Why? Because if America was run by a dictator reminiscent of Hitler, you wouldn’t be allowed to write such stuff. The fact that one of the strongest anti-America writers uses his actual name is a sign to me that he believes that America really isn’t as bad as everyone says. Heck, John McCain (the current wanna-be leader of the GOP, which is apparently the ally of Nazism) wants to let talk radio stations publish what ever they want. I haven’t seen any censorship right now. Right now, there are so many anti-Bush columns out there, it’s obvious there is no censorship. Have we killed everyone whose skin and religion are different? Maybe two hundred...
Liberalism vs conservatism vs fundamentalism
2008-04-02 04:43:00 Liberal is the person who favors progress or reform; he or she is tolerant with other beliefs and views, and is free from prejudice. A liberal person must be generous and abundant, and not, in a stricter sense, literalist when interpreting texts, situations or experiences. He or she advocates for liberty seeking freedom from arbitrary government system, freedom from foreign rule or policy, freedom from captivity, and freedom from any forms of oppression and injustice. The liberal person adheres to the libertarian tradition where there is freedom of expression, thoughts and thought forms. But you can only distinguish or classify ?liberal? when you have identified what is ?conservative.? To be conservative is to spend your life preserving the status quo or the existing conditions of society, cultures, institutions, etc. Usually when the person is conservative, his or her tendency is to limit and moderate change. Major reforms should be avoided in order to preserve peace and order, and ...
Anti-War Jackasses Interrupt Mass to Protest War
2008-03-24 12:11:00 I would be so angry with these clowns, I would need another mass just to ask the Lord to calm me down. There are places to protest and there are places to respect. Sunday mass on Easter morning is not the place to protest: As Cardinal Francis George began the homily at the 11 a.m. mass in the auditorium at 375 N. State, the group stood and shouted anti-war slogans, then splashed theatrical blood on themselves. They were portraying people wounded in war. They dropped to the floor before being removed by security and police, witnesses said. Police charged the six, members of Catholic Schoolgirls Against the War, with criminal damage to property and simple battery. Arrested were Donte D. Smith, 21; Ephran Ramirez Jr., 22; Ryane J. Ziemba, 25; Mercedes Phinaih, 18; Regan Maher, 25, and Angela Haban, 20. “Catholic Schoolgirls Against the War?” There are a couple guys in that group. What kind of freaky club is this? Seriously, these anti-war jackasses have no respect for ...
Moving Beyond Liberalism
2008-03-20 06:05:00 Whenever political pundits or writers are invited on mainstream television shows, it will not take more than three minutes before you hear this phrase: ?We need to move beyond partisanship and get stuff done.? Well, I am getting really tired of this faux moderation and it really needs to stop. This argumentative tactic is so infuriating because it is nothing but a way to disguise unabashed... ?Infidelity Is Acceptable - Get Used To It? So Psychologists Are Saying
2008-03-20 05:00:00 How lovely. When we heard all these glowing remarks and unending praise for David Paterson who stepped in for the now former Governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer - we find that we are getting another man who is guilty of infidelity. Sunday Edition: In Defense Of Pastor John Hagee
2008-03-16 07:09:00 Pastor John Hagee needs no defending, but as a faithful follower of the man for an upward of 11 years I deem it necessary to come to his defense. My conscious dictates this. Doggie Style Fine, Dogs Off Leash Fined
2008-03-14 16:36:00 Amsterdam’s Vondelpark will become a “sanctuary” park for the city’s gay men looking for uncomplicated sex. The city has decided to allow homosexuals to have sex, in public, in the park’s rose garden: Why should we try to impose something that is actually impossible to impose, which also causes little bother for others and for a certain group actually means much pleasure?”, he said. Amsterdam’s beautiful Vondelpark in the centre of city draws hordes of summer visitors, families, skaters and joggers. But the park’s rose garden has become famous as a trysting spot for gay men looking for uncomplicated sexual encounters. Mr van Grieken stresses that tolerance to “cruising” gays, aimed at protecting homosexuals from violence, will have “strict rules attached”. “Thus, condoms must always be cleared away, it must never take place in the neighbourhood of children’s playgrounds and the sex must be rest...
Audacity: Obama?s Spiritual ?Mentor?

Liberalism - christiansquoting.org.uk
2008-03-09 15:58:00 Liberalism is a disease masquerading as its own cure.If I had to choose between putting a saloon or a liberal church on a corner, I'd choose the saloon every time. People who drink up the pay check in the saloon are less likely to become Pharisees, thinking that they don't need the Great Physician, than those who weekly swill the soporific doctrine of man's goodness. Jay AdamsIn the United States today, we have more than our share of the nattering nabobs of negativism. --SPIRO AGNEW, Speech, San Diego, 11 Sept 1970.A man who has both feet planted firmly in the air can be safely called a liberal as opposed to the conservative, who has both feet firmly planted in his mouth. Jacques BarzunWhat all liberals have in common is a touching certainty that they are right. Liberalism is a missionary faith, and proselytising zeal is not normally conducive to sceptical inquiry. Whatever the core values of liberalism, they can surely conflict with one another - and with other goods such as soc...

Nightly Ramble: Emergency services, Liberalism is the real totalitariansm,
2008-03-03 22:19:00 Actually Billy, it likely WAS about that. … Allow an illustration: You know, there are a lot of people who figure that the right… IE: the power, to keep and bear arms is one that is directly connected to increased numbers of murders… ignoring of course the facts which run exactly in the opposite direction. They’ve never figured out that the power to do something is not directly connected to the worst case scenario for the abuse of that power. So it is with the power of government, as a whole. Because a power gets abused doesn’t make it power that should NEVER be used. That the power of government is being abused in this case doesn’t make the original concept of government run emergency services a bad one. What you’re describing is a situation where the betterment of the community and the individuals in it, was the idea. However, that idea got perverted. We agree it’s an abuse of power. But why? Why would such a thing be required to...

Nightly Ramble: Clintons Over? McCain’s liberalism a handicap when ca
2008-02-21 23:09:00 Billy “I’ve always believed that he’s the easier candidate to beat in the Fall.” (McPhillips: “Are The Clintons Over?”) I think his general position is correct: these people won’t be “over” until we see their boxes getting dropped into the ground. She’ll be back as long as she can get someone to point a teevee camera at her. Yea, I do, too, really. And you’re right about Clinton being wherever there’s a camera…. but then again, that’s standard issue for any pol, isn’t it? I mean, look at Ron Paul as an example. The man’s been over since the first week of primaries. Yet he always manages to find a camera. I think it would be a toss-up whether McCain could be elected against Rodham. Well, again, agreed. Then again, as I’ve been saying here for weeks now, I consider the question of one being better than the other an open one, as well. Which, perhaps, is why the whole thing is so clos...

Lockean Liberalism and the Declaration of Independence
2008-02-18 10:14:00 Leonard O Goenaga Professor Boronat POT3054 February 18, 2008 LockeanLiberalism and the Declaration of Independence Scholars and historians have continued to probeinto the political theories behind our Declaration of Independence in an effort to locate the source of itsinspiration. Although they have often held Lockean Liberalism as a centraltenant of the Declaration’sideology, such scholars as Gary Wills and Stephen Lucas have attacked hisinfluence, arguing instead for the important role of Scottish philosophers andthe Dutch. Although the sway of Scottish moralist and the Dutch Oath ofAbjuration may have influenced Thomas Jefferson, the central role of Locke’s SecondTreatise cannot be undermined. This paperwill analyze and argue the important role Lockean Liberalism had in thedevelopment of the Declarationand its ideology by analyzing the Declaration’s second paragraph along Lockean concepts ofliberty, freedom, instituting government, and the right to alter that government....

Savage and Coulter are right… Liberalism IS a sickness.
2008-02-17 16:57:00 Says Fellow Swamp Stomper, the Dread Pundit Bluto: Dr. Lyle Rossiter says that liberals are actually insane: “Based on strikingly irrational beliefs and emotions, modern liberals relentlessly undermine the most important principles on which our freedoms were founded,” says Dr. Lyle Rossiter, author of the new book, “The Liberal Mind: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness.” “Like spoiled, angry children, they rebel against the normal responsibilities of adulthood and demand that a parental government meet their needs from cradle to grave.”… “The roots of liberalism - and its associated madness - can be clearly identified by understanding how children develop from infancy to adulthood and how distorted development produces the irrational beliefs of the liberal mind… That analysis is why the two… that is to say Savage and Coulter… are so popular. The accusations ring true. Which, in turn, is precisely wh...

Need a Better Reason to Support Senate Republicans?
2008-02-16 17:43:00 Democrats and liberals have been working against the military since they took over the Congress. I have show how they “Support the military.” Now they refuse to denounce these anti-American, communist peaceniks who are assaulting not only our people in military, but anyone who tries to support them. I especially like how the cops are observing a crime, yet trying to stay neutral. What B.S! These leftist, liberals knuckleheads would sell the country down the crapper for peace. And these people would be the type of people our enemy would kill first. Peace is a beautiful thing, but you have peace by being stronger and deadlier than your enemy. Their whole plan is to weaken our military, and by that action, weakening our ability to wage war. But if we cannot wage war, we cannot defend ourselves. It is outside a liberal’s skill set to be forward thinking. We must have a strong military. Without it, we are as vulnerable as a dessert buffet at a Jenny Craig ...

A Letter from Sen. Jim DeMint
2008-02-08 23:40:00 I got this in my inbox today: Dear Fellow Conservative, The City Council of Berkeley last week voted to ask the U.S. Marine Corps to vacate their recruiting office in town, and that if they chose to stay they did so as “uninvited and unwelcome intruders.” Berkeley also voted to give the radical liberal group Code Pink a parking space to protest the Marine Corps and urged them to “impede, passively or actively” the work of Marine Corps recruiters. During debate of the resolution, one council member called the Marines “the President’s own gangsters” and “trained killers.” Another said the Marines had given the country “horrible karma” and said they had a history of “death and destruction.” In a document drafted to support the resolution against the Marines, the council stated: “Military recruiters are sales people known to lie to and seduce minors and young adults into contracting themselves into milit...

13 Step Program for Recovering Liberals
2008-01-27 14:21:00 American Thinker has a treatment program for recovering liberals called LibAnon. There is only one requirement to joining LibAnon: The only requirement for LibAnon membership is the desire to stop being a Liberal. This can occur as a Heisenbergesque quantum leap or a lengthy, drawn out process. If the morally-relativistic, anti-capitalist, all-expressions-of-thought-are--equally-valid-moral-and-ingenio-us, who-am-I-to-be-discerning liberal in your life is aghast at the idea a formal code of behavior may actually be required to live genuinely in this world (and make amends for his past), you can put your mind at ease - eventually, either in this life or the next, he will see the light. There are 13 steps in beating liberalism in LibAnon. Like any bad habit, it will be tough, but worth it: THE 13 PRESCRIPTIVE PRINCIPLES (”STEPS”) OF LIBERALS ANONYMOUS 1. Mother Sacrfices Her Life to Save Her Son?s
2008-01-26 19:10:00 So many pro-choice liberals have asked me what I would do if the pregnancy of my wife would cost her her life. Wouldn’t I abort the child? I reply that I hope that I am never in that position, and pray for those who are, but I would not ask my wife to kill our baby so she could live her life knowing what she had done. They never believe me. I’ll bet they wouldn’t believe this couple either: Lorraine Allard, 33, was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer when she was four months pregnant, the Telegraph reported Saturday. Allard rejected the idea of an abortion and delayed her cancer treatment, giving birth to son Liam 15 weeks prematurely, the Telegraph reported. “She knew all too well she didn’t have long to live. So she put little Liam’s life before her own,” said her husband, Martyn, an oil field technician from St. Olaves, near Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Allard had hoped to live long enough bring her son home from the hospital. Her chemoth...

What?s the Last Thing You Want If You Go to Court for Defacing a Leathernec
2008-01-19 00:36:00 A Leatherneck judge: The case was called at 13:33, and the Defendant did not show up. There were 2 heavy hitter State’s Attorneys here to handle it. The Judge increased his bond to $20,000.00 or 10 percent cash, and put out a warrant for his arrest. The Defendant called at 13:40 to say that he will be a half an hout late and was waiting for the media to leave. The Judge said in open court that if he does shows up he will be taken into custody, and if he doesn’t he is fair game for any law enforcement agency that wants to pick him up. Will report further developments as warranted. And I heard that Grodner was arrested upon showing up! Update: Source says Grodner pled guilty, will pay $600 to Semper Fi Injured Marine Fund. There were probably 15 folks who showed up in support of Sgt...

But what kind of liberalism is emerging as the dominant voice in the Democratic Party?Well, it isn't your father's liberalism, the ideology that defended the interests and values of the middle and working classes. The old liberalism had its flaws, but it also inspired increased social and economic mobility, strong protections for unions, the funding of a national highway system and a network of public parks, and the development of viable public schools. It also invented Social Security and favored a strong foreign policy.Today's ascendant liberalism has a much different agenda. Call it "gentry liberalism."
