China Agitates To Undermine American Liberties
2008-08-18 15:49:00
-By Frederick Meekins It’s bad enough that those living under the heal of tyranny have their God-given rights suppressed but one expects to hear of this transpiring in less-developed countries that have never really known freedom to begin with. However, things have really gotten out of hand when those living in the United States have ...
Seaching Computers For Porn: Civil Liberties Alert
2008-06-19 21:00:00
I once was asked by a friend to clean up his computer. He had antiviral software, but never bothered to update it, or run scans. As a result, whenever he would open his browser, he found the homepage had been reset to a pornography site. No big deal. I updated his viruses, ran the scans, removed the ...
Will the Constitution Be Altered to Eliminate Key Liberties?
2008-04-14 16:41:00
AlterNet Though little discussed on the campaign trail, a crucial issue to be decided in November is whether the United States will return to its traditions as a constitutional Republic respecting "unalienable" human rights or whether it will finish a transformation into a frightened nation governed by an all-powerful President who can do whatever he wants during the open-ended "war on terror." That reality was underscored on April 1 with the release of a five-year-old legal opinion from former Justice Department official John Yoo asserting that President George W. Bush possessed nearly unlimited authority as Commander in Chief, including the power to have military interrogators abuse terror suspects. While most news coverage of Yoo's March 14, 2003, memo has focused on the legal gymnastics justifying harsh treatment of detainees -- including possible use of mind-altering drugs -- the centerpiece of Yoo's argument is that at a time of war the President's powers are essentially...
Civil Liberties, Habeas Corpus, and Abraham Lincoln
2008-03-12 21:16:00
It's been a while since I posted this, and with the President's recent veto of the torture, bill I figured it needed a repost.------------------------------------------------------A- controversial Republican president during a time of war, utilizing controversial new powers. Many, even in his own political party, were outraged when he suspended the right of habeas corpus and imprisoned many without trial. Military tribunals were authorized to try suspects quickly; money was spent without congressional authorization. Who was this president? None other than the great Abraham Lincoln.Abraham Lincoln:? Suspended the writ of habeas corpus. [1]? Spent money without congressional authorization. [1]? Imprisoned 18,000 suspected Confederate sympathizers without trial. [1]? Conducted at least 4,271 trials by military commission. [2]George W. Bush:? Defined captured enemies as "enemy combatants". [3]? Denied "enemy combatants" habeas corpus. [3]? Tried "enemy combatants" through military tribu...

Obama vs. Clinton on Civil Liberties
2008-03-02 08:01:00
I’ve frequently noted that the conventional wisdom is wrong in saying that there is little difference between Obama and Clinton on the issues. There are significant differences between them on foreign policy, social issues, and civil liberties which lead me to support Obama but make me unlikely to vote for Hillary Clinton should she win ...
Jeep Liberties - top of my list for gas guzzlers
2008-02-28 18:11:00
Well, now that I sold my 06 Jeep Liberty Limited at auction, I'll be happy to tell you that when I drove it to St. Louis from Springfield Missouri it just about bankrupted me in gas fees. You would think a small SUV like that would not be any big deal on gas, but if you combine automatic, 4 wheel drive, V6 and heater blowing it adds up quick. I've taken that trip a hundred times (literally) and I never gave gas prices a second thought. I have the receipts but I must have spent $60 there and back. I guess it was the fact that it was such a small vehicle that really set me off about it. I could understand if I was driving a Yukon or Navigator, you would at least expect it then. But what a surprise this was. While I'm on the subject of Liberties, have you ever driven a 5 speed liberty? It kind of reminds me of driving a 3 wheeler for the first time. It has a very strange feel to it, just not natural. I'm mentioning this because a friend of mine just bought one to resell. It turned ...
The American Civil Liberties Union Asks You To Thank Congress
2008-02-24 06:21:00
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) issued both a statement and a call to action today regarding the recent acts of Congress, thanking them for standing up to bullying from President Bush, while President George W. Bush gave his radio address warning Congress to renew the ironically-titled Protect America Act to allow government e-mail and wiretapping without a court order. The ACLU is hosting a strongly worded petition to Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, asking them to stay firm.
Loss of Civil Liberties Since 9/11

This is a great resource, documenting how, and how much liberty has been lost since the government attack on 9/11. Loss of Civil Liberties since 9/11 There’s tons of information there, but unlike the Reddit morons that complain about not having “bullet points” to entertain you, you’re going to have to read.

Hillary Clinton and John McCain are two presidential candidates who have something in common. Ciivil Liberties Rebellion Grows In British Parliament
2007-12-27 15:32:00
Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s problems continued to foster growing resentment against his leadership. his proposal to extend from 28 to 48 the number of days a suspected “terrorist’ might be detained without any charges being filed has run into a stone wall of opposition from members of his own party. Labor has a 67 seat ...
Still No Smoking Ban In Michigan
2007-12-16 06:07:00
A smoking ban bill that cleared the Michigan House earlier this week seems to have stalled in the Senate.  The bill would ban smoking in restaurants, bars, and other workplaces. The Democrats tried to send the bill to the Health Policy Committee, where the Republican chair, Dr. Tom George (R-Kalamazoo) supports the ban; instead, the bill was sent ...

The Jena Six, Ahmadinejad and Civil Liberties
2007-09-25 02:43:00

The Gena Six, Ahmadinejad and Civil Liberties
2007-09-24 20:14:00
On this first full day of autumn, with the leaves beginning to change colors and students back in school, we await Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s speech at Columbia University in New York City this afternoon. We’re struck by the incongruity of last week’s civil rights march on Jena, Louisiana and a nationwide insistence that civil liberties be preserved in Jena, while the clamor to quash Ahmadinejad’s speech is everywhere. His trip to Ground Zero has already childishly been nixed. We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Iran wasn’t the cause of the World Trade Center attack on 9/11…Maybe the man would have learned something there, or gained new perspective. Why is this any different than, say, an Iranian student going to visit the Washington Monument? Deliberately offending the leader of a foreign nation can’t be wise. (more…)

Be afraid. Toss your liberties. Trust me.
2007-09-12 16:22:00
The odds? Even if terrorists were able to pull off one attack per year on the scale of the 9/11 atrocity, that would mean your one-year risk would be one in 100,000 and your lifetime risk would be about one in 1300. (300,000,000 ÷ 3,000 = 100,000 ÷ 78 years = 1282) In other words, your ...

Uncivil Liberties and the Empire's War on Its Citizens
2007-06-18 21:07:00
By Carolyn Baker 6/18/07 Speaking Truth to PowerIn the seventh year of the current presidential administration which has eviscerated more aspects of the Bill of Rights and U.S. Constitution than any previous administration in American history, I recently had the opportunity of viewing a new documentary ?Uncivil Liberties: What Lies Between Liberty & Security?, written and directed by Thomas Mercer. I am pleased to offer my review of the film; however, it is not possible for me to authentically review this work of art or any other pertaining to civil liberties without attaching to it my own addendum of the history of attacks on the well being of its citizens by the United States government.Unlike Robert Greenwald?s ?Unconstitutional? or Aaron Russo?s ?America: From Freedom To Fascism?, Mercer?s film is not a documentary but fiction, closer in purpose to the genre of ?Star Wars?, ?Farenheit 451?, or ?Brazil.? It is intentionally murky in its message, filled with purposeful ambiguity, ...

Women bear brunt of crackdown on civil liberties in Iran

Thirty-one were women, all activists were accused of receiving foreign funds to stir up dissent in Iran.
