Libraries: Eliminate DRM!
2008-05-14 06:11:00 Recently, we took action against the Boston Public Library (BPL) demanding that they embargo the use of DRM technology on their collection and create a policy that respects the motto that hangs above their door: "free-to-all." To send a message to all libraries that they too should respect their patrons' freedom, we urge you to sign our open letter. To take action against your local library, we urge you to customize a letter from our template. Please, let us know if you have contacted or written your local library, and please let your friends and fellow patrons know about the open letter. In solidarity, Josh, John, Matt, Peter, and the DRM Elimination Crew.

Do Pakistanis Read? (And the Missing Libraries of Pakistan)
2008-04-26 07:44:00 Adil Najam I have often wondered - and seriously - if Pakistanis read? No, not whether they can read. Illiteracy being what it is in Pakistan, there are many - too many - who obviously cannot. But this question does not pertain to them. This is about those who could read if they chose to do so. But ...

2008-03-24 18:25:00 It's the same here across the pond. Libraries always come in for funding cuts because county and city councils see them as soft options. They justify the attacks in terms of dropping numbers of borrowers. But of course, how can libraries win them back if their stock is constantly being depleted?

Even Libraries Get the Birthday Blues
2008-02-10 23:00:00 The award winning, downtown Salt Lake City Library (where I happen to work; I'm productive, yes?) just celebrated its 5th birthday a few days ago on February 8th. Happy 5th Birthday, Salt Lake City Library! Like any 5-year old celebrating its birthday, the Salt Lake City library celebrated its birthday by having a party with all of its friends, blowing out the 5 candles on its birthday cake, and having an endless stream of homeless people fall aseep inside of it.

411 on Local Libraries by Tech Savvy Mama
2008-02-03 03:33:00 Sometimes winter just makes me want to curl up under a blanket with a great book. Nowadays my regular reading consists mainly of books with large font and lots of colorful pictures. Like every good parent, I foster a love of literacy by spending lots of time reading to my children. But I do get tired of reading the same old books over and over again! When it is time for an infusion of new reading material, we head to the local library. Armed with the largest L.L. Bean Boat and Tote around, we fill it to brim until it is too heavy to carry and must be dragged from the library to the car and into the house. Maybe it is the former teacher in me, but I love the library. I love the selection- books on tape, books on CD, videos, CDs, picture books, chapter books, and best sellers. I love the librarians at the information desk. They can always tell me where to find my daughter?s favorite book even though I?ve checked it out so many times and should know exactly where it lives....

#113: INTERNATIONAL DADA ARCHIVE - THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA LIBRARIES
2008-01-30 16:28:00 This Web site is designed to provide information on the resources and services of the International Dada Archive at the University of Iowa Libraries. It is the gateway to the International Online Bibliography of Dada. As the site is developed, it will also become a resource for additional information about the historic Dada movement and the individual Dada writers and artists, as well as links to other Internet resources. At a campus festival when I was an art student, we opened a Tacos bar called "Cavalet Voltaire". I named it and of course the name came from the cavalet which was opened by Hugo. I was really into the ideas of Dada, at that time. I've just found this website. This is a very valuable archive. Enjoy! --> International Dada Archive

Arabic Online Libraries -- A Frustrating Story
2007-11-21 21:58:00 With all the wealth that their oil generates, it is a shame that it is only now that at least one government in the Middle East is trying to do the obvious (see story in the bottom of this post).Bookyards list of six Arabic libraries is here.My Comment: I have spent the past six years trying to get someone in the Middle East to pursue an Arabic online book project such as Bookyards or Project Gutenberg .... but to no avail. Ambassadors, book publishers, Middle East government officials .... the list of people that we have contacted during this time can fill a Rolodex. This has personally become very frustrating to me, because I know that it is education, books, the free flow of information ….. these are the powerful counter-terrorism tools that we in the West have in our arsenal. I know that this is true because (if I may quote Strategy Page ) past experience has shown that education and books diminishes enthusiasm for the old customs, as well as Islamic conservatism or any oth...

Libraries Reject Google In Favor Of Open Source
2007-10-22 15:33:00 The Google Library Project gains new members fairly frequently, and a comparable service from Microsoft also does all right. A number of libraries have steered clear of the corporate rivalry, though, and have instead opted to side with the Open Content Alliance (OCA). Interestingly, both Microsoft and Yahoo have ties to the OCA; they’re actually listed as “contributors” within the organization’s site. But, as reported by Katie Hafner, “Libraries that agree to work with Google must agree to a set of terms, which include making the material unavailable to other commercial search services. Microsoft places a similar restriction on the books it converts to electronic form. The Open Content Alliance, by contrast, is making the material available to any search service.” And that seems a little more true to library form, even if there weren’t other matters at stake. “Scanning the great libraries is a wonderful i...
