Drop in Calif. real estate licenses continues
2008-05-13 22:27:00 California Department of Real Estate statistics show that the number of real estate licenses has plateaued. But even though the number of licensees has decreased for a fourth consecutive month, the total remains close to record levels. Real estate licenses peaked in November at 549,244. That’s 1.5 licenses for each house sold in the state in all of 2007 by the California Association of Realtors’ count. Licensee numbers have decreased steadily since then, falling to 546,247 in March, the latest DRE number out. California real estate licenses soared during the housing boom, and people continued taking the state license exam in near-record numbers for a year after sales began to slump. Professionals say that their colleagues have now been forced to leave the business in droves, taking full-time jobs elsewhere. But many are keeping their licenses active and staying in local Realtor associations, either working part-time as agents or hoping to return to the business when the ...

2008-04-07 05:42:00 Remember that little outfit that sued Apple and AT&T over use of the Visual Voicemail system on the iPhone? Right, well it looks like Sprint's going after the very same look and feel for their newly announced iPhone-fighting Samsung Instinct - except Sprint opted to pay Klausner licensing fees. Sprint has licensed the technology from Klausner Technologies and is even calling their CDMA-flavor of Visual Voicemail, wait for it… "Visual Voicemail." The move should keep Klausner's legal beagles off of Sprint's back. The Visual Voicemail technology not only required AT&T to overhaul their voicemail back-end, but it also changed the way we work with and retrieve voicemails. The full-body touchscreen handset will not only be rocking GPS, but will apparently ship with this Visual Voicemail for the iPhone-shunning masses. I didn't see (or even know about) Visual Voicemail during my hands-on with the Samsung Instinct at CTIA Las Vegas 2008, so I don&...

Sprint announced that it has licensed Klausner's Visual Voicemail (yes, Visual Voicemail) for use in the familiar looking device, adding weight to the argument that this is the carrier's official play for the iPhone market. If you'll recall, Klausner sued AT&T and Apple over the feature, which it claims violated two of its patents. Now all they need to do is throw Cover Flow, Google Maps integration, and some wiggly icons on there, and this race will really get heated.[Via I4U News] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Calif. real estate licenses fall for 2nd month
2008-03-22 01:01:00 California Department of Real Estate figures show that the state’s real estate license total fell in January for a second straight month. Although the decrease from December to January is slight, it’s the first back-to-back monthly decline since November and December 1998. The number of licenses fell to 548,879 in January. While still the third highest on record, that’s down 0.01% (or 80 licensees) from December’s total of 548,959. December, in turn, fell 0.1% from November’s all-time high of 549,244 licenses. A related item posted here on Jan. 31 reported incorrectly that December marked the state’s first year-over-year decrease since March 1999. That upward trend remains unbroken, with current license figures still higher than a year ago. The state’s real estate license total also had climbed steadily month in, month out since March 2002. That upward trend ended in December. Here are statewide license figures for the past 13 months: Mont...

Microsoft licenses Flash lite for Windows Mobile Devices
2008-03-17 13:12:00 At the recently concluded Mix 08, Microsoft showcased Silverlight 2.0 working on Windows Mobile. In addition, Nokia licensed Silverlight to display on its mobile device. In a recent news, it is said that Microsoft is licensing Flash Lite for display with Windows Mobile Devices. Here's what ZDNET thinks of it: http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=8-240 Now i don't think what ZDNET thinks is at all on the mark for the following reasons: it has already being displayed at Mix 08 and I don't doubt that it is going to come out soon. If MS has to dissect Flash lite to learn it, there is no need to license the same. Why wud MS want to make Adobe look relevant, when it is fighting Silverlight war with Flash and Expression suite war with Adobe designer suite? I think: Microsoft will continue to prefer Silverlight for its mobile devices. Flash Lite provides Windows Mobile owners additional avenue of using content. In the new found Interoperability "karma", Microsoft may want various technologies...

Huh? Fewer 16-year olds are getting their licenses
2008-03-01 02:26:00 Have teenagers gone nuts? The Federal Highway Administration is reporting that the percentage of teenagers with driver's licenses is going down. Yeah, decreasing! What is up with that? When I was growing up, my teenage years focused on just one objective... driving. All I wanted was to get my driver's license. That little card with your picture on it was the golden ticket. You could borrow your parent's car, fill the tank (and grab a candy bar) for $20, and nobody could reach you until you returned. We didn't have cell phones, text messaging or GPS tracking. A driver's license represented freedom. So, what happened? Experts aren't blaming unmotivated teenagers. Instead, they point the finger at the environment in which we are raising our kids. In today's world, parents are much more likely to chauffeur their teenagers from place to place. Tighter state laws govern when kids can drive, and in many cases legislation has pushed the driving age limit higher. Fewer high schools ...

Calif. real estate licenses suffer first drop since ‘99
2008-02-01 00:12:00 The California Department of Real Estate reports that real estate licenses decreased vs. the year before in December for the first time since March 1999. As of December, the state had 548,959 folks with a real estate license — still the third highest number on record and equal to one licensee for every 22 Calif0rnia households or one for every 1.4 homes sold last year. But that’s down 0.1% from the number of licensees in December 2006 and from last November. The housing downturn and revised license-exam requirements are possible factors in the decrease. Local Realtor associations are budgeting for membership drops of up to 15 percent in 2008. (See blog post HERE!) Local real estate execs say agents and mortgage brokers have left the business in droves, or taken other jobs to make ends meet as the number of sales fell to their lowest level in at least two decades. (See related story HERE!) The count of licensees is slow to drop since they’re good for four years befo...
IBM licenses System x servers to Lenovo
2008-01-28 18:59:00 When IBM sold its PC division to Lenovo in 2004, Big Blue decided to hold on to its server business and continue to manufacture and sell servers directly to customers. That strategy has now changed. As PC World reports, IBM has licensed its System x servers to Lenovo, giving the Chinese company carte blanche to manufacture and sell the machines directly to small and medium businesses. As part of the deal, Lenovo will manufacture single- and dual-processor System x servers, marking its first foray into the server world outside of the Chinese market. IBM's current System x lineup includes rack-mount, tower, and enterprise servers based on dual- and quad-core x86 processors from AMD and Intel. Unlike the 2004 deal, IBM is retaining ownership of its System x servers and will continue to sell them directly in parallel with Lenovo. According to IBM spokesman Tim Breuer, Lenovo has an "excellent reach" to companies with fewer than 500 employees, so the deal will "give IBM a better reach to...

Michigan says no to drivers licenses for illegals
2008-01-23 18:46:00 I noted this story last niht but couldn’t get out of bed to comment on it. Never fear; Michelle did it. Better late than never, Michigan has put an end to driver’s licenses to illegal aliens. It’s a violation of federal law, say state officials. It is not a federal civil right. Look for open-borders whining in 3…2…1…: Starting Tuesday, the Michigan Secretary of State will no longer grant a driver’s license or state identification to first time applicants unless they can prove that they are in the U.S. legally and permanently. The move by the state is the direct result of a recent ruling by Michigan Attorney General Michael Cox which banned issuing licenses to illegal aliens. “If you are not here legally or permanently, then we will not issue a driver’s license,” said Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, at a press conference Monday at the North American International Auto Show at Cobo Center in Detroit. “From now on...
