Lince-Who?
2008-04-27 19:43:00
The San Francisco Giants currently sport one of the worst offenses of all time, but have posted an 11-14 record on the strength of some quality pitching. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum, both of whom have been anointed by various pundits as the ...

SF Giants: Lincecum for Rios?
2007-12-06 18:01:00
The Toronto Blue Jays and San Francisco Giants have been going back and forth adding players to the deal and taking them away. The deal that started out as a one for one remains a one for one. The big question is, will the Giants pull the trigger? The Toronto Blue Jays have offered up an amazing
Rios For Cain Or Lincecum?
2007-12-06 01:17:00
UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 6:16pm: Jeff Blair says the Jays' offer on the table is Rios for Lincecum, straight up. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 12:34pm: Brian Sabean wants more than just Rios for Lincecum (yes, the Jays prefer Lincecum based on service time).  The Giants want an improved proposal from the Jays, and Toronto could add Robinzon Diaz, Curtis Thigpen, or Brett Cecil.  Cecil would have to be a player to be named later since he was drafted in 2007.  He signed on June 22nd, so he can't even be named as a PTBNL until December 22nd.  showad(); UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 10:56am: Peter Gammons via Amy Nelson is saying it's Lincecum for Rios currently rather than Cain. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 10:10am: Ken Rosenthal has some more details on these talks.  He says the Jays won't add pitching to their side of the deal.  Additionally, they don't want to move A.J. Burnett.  The Jays have a potentially elite rotation for 2008 if they can get Lincecum for Rios.  FROM 12...
Giants Rumors: Lincecum, Tejada, Sexson
2007-12-04 18:43:00
Andrew Baggarly gives his take on the Giants hot stove buzz. One Reds official think the Giants almost have to trade Tim Lincecum to build an offensive core.  It seems the Mariners and Reds in particular are pushing for Lincecum.  The Ms could offer Adam Jones; the Reds have Jay Bruce, Joey Votto, and Josh Hamilton.  The Mariners could've had Lincecum with the fifth overall pick in 2006, but opted for Brandon Morrow instead.  The Reds could've had him too but went for Drew Stubbs. The Giants and Orioles discussed Miguel Tejada, and the O's like players such as Jonathan Sanchez, Brad Hennessey, Fred Lewis, and Guillermo Rodriguez.  Outside of Sanchez those guys don't seem like what the Orioles would ask for to me.  No deal is close. Baggarly talks of the rumored Richie Sexson for Ray Durham or Rich Aurilia swap, though Larry LaRue says it's bogus. The one team inquiring on Bengie Molina was the Mets, and that was before they got Brian Schneider. sho...

Cafardo's Latest: Drew, Pettitte, Lincecum
2007-11-04 08:15:00
The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo works his way through all the teams in anticipation of Monday's GM meetings.  Here are some of the rumors we haven't seen much before. The Rays want a defensive-minded shortstop and veteran starter.  Maybe they'll make a play for Cesar Izturis or Omar Vizquel.  A rehab guy like Freddy Garcia or Randy Wolf could be interesting. The Indians are looking for a power bat for left field.  Haven't seen them mentioned with Barry Bonds at all, could that work? Cafardo proposes the idea of the Cubs acquiring J.D. Drew as their OBP-minded right field acquisition.  Drew has a limited no-trade clause allowing him to block two unknown teams.  I imagine the Red Sox would have to eat some salary. Cafardo also speculates that Andy Pettitte could follow Joe Torre to L.A.  Pettitte has previously talked about a Yankees or retirement stance. The idea of the Giants trading Tim Lincecum seemed crazy at first, right?  Cafardo sa...
Odds and Ends: Lincecum, Wakefield, Schilling
2007-11-02 22:34:00
More random rumors.  You know you love it. Tracy Ringolsby has some hot stove musings.  It's a fairly sloppy article with one new tidbit: "Tim Lincecum can be had for a quality bat."  Either Ringolsby is misinformed, or Brian Sabean has lost it.  Lincecum has Cy Young potential. A couple of Red Sox mainstays will stay for '08 - Tim Wakefield and Julian Tavarez.  Wake was a no-brainer at his perpetual $4MM, while Tavarez was debatable at $3.85MM.  Tavarez expected it to be declined, since the team left him off the World Series roster. The Ms will decide very soon whether to exercise Jose Guillen's $9MM option.  Even if they do, Guillen then can decline it and forfeit a buyout.  He most certainly will pass since he can get a two or three-year pact on the open market, mercurial nature and all. Re-signing Tony Clark is appearing more difficult than the D'Backs anticipated. Reliever Masahide Kobayashi filed for free agency and is inte...
Rest Lowry and Lincecum
2007-09-07 01:51:00
The Giants have to keep Noah Lowry on the shelf for the rest of the year. It makes no sense at all to let him make another start with his elbow not at 100% and the Giants playing for nothing but pride. It's too bad for Lowry because he was on pace for a 17+ win season, but it's a lot more important to have him healthy for 2008 than stretch him out in a meaningless 2007 season. I also think they should do the same thing with Tim Lincecum as his velocity has plummeted in recent starts, an indicator that he's getting tired. During his latest start in Colorado, he was being clocked around 88-89 mph which is a huge drop off from the 97-98 he was throwing just a few weeks ago. A drop like that in velocity usually means injury or tired arm and in Lincecum's case it's a tired arm. Resting Lowry and Lincecum for the last 3 weeks of the year would also give the Giants an opportunity to asses some of the other younger pitchers in their system. They are going to have to fill at least one ...

It is a breakdown of Lincecum’s mechanics and how he can extract such force from his slight frame.   Controlled Fury: Tim Lincecum Possessing a slight frame myself, I am fascinating by guys who can bring serious heat while weighing 165lbs.  The names Pedro Martinez, Jason Frasor, Billy Wagner and others spring to mind. Add SF Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum to the list.  Although it looks like he wakes up every morning with a sore neck, the writers at baseball think factory assure he has an efficient delivery.  Pay close attention to how in slow motion it looks like he steps over an imaginary object in his delivery, almost jumping off the mound. Pretty interesting.

Lincecum Gets Spanked
2007-08-12 07:27:00
Lincecum was on a roll - he had a 1.55 ERA over his last seven games, the Fox announcers were talking about he was the best pitcher in the NL since mid-June, his pitching coach was answering questions about how filthy his stuff was on camera, and he had a one-hit shutout going through the first three innings against us including striking out six of the first ten batters he had faced. Everything seemed perfect until he forgot the Pirates are a very aggressive free-swinging group who tar and feather anyone that has a fastball as their only plus pitch - especially when it's pretty much straight and they get too greedy trying to throw it too much. That's what happened in the fourth inning as you can see the buzz saw Lincecum hit in the video below. And be sure to note LaRoche's massive cannon shot: The young man who was throwing "pretty" strikes was spanked so hard he looked like he just lost game 7 of the World Series as he left the field. I thought he was going to cry ...
Puzzle Pieces: On Lincecum, Broxton, Durbin, and Those Precious Pirates
2007-07-23 18:52:00
Kind words from Hall of Famer Jim Palmer regarding Tim Lincecum, after the latter twirled eight scoreless innings against Milwaukee on Saturday (via Baseball Think Factory): ?He?s got overwhelming ability,? Palmer said. ?Jim Kaat was saying back in ?90, ?If a guy?s got great velocity, great movement, great location and deception, that guy?s going to the Hall of Fame. This kid looks like he has those four things. Now, he?s just gonna have to figure out how to stay healthy enough to pitch.? The health issue is always trumpeted when a young pitcher as talented and undersized as Lincecum comes through the chute, which is to say, it doesn’t happen often. He’s still only 29, but the slight Roy Oswalt has been the poster child for major league durability in his career, and — what do ya know? — he is leading the NL in innings pitched in 2007. Of course, this comes on the heels of the news that Oswalt will miss a start with chest soreness.  You’re lucky you don&...
SF Giants: Lincecum Looking Like "The Franchise"

Lincecum Looking Like "The Franchise"
2007-07-22 23:31:00
The Giants two best pitchers at the moment helped them to a series win in Milwaukee over the weekend. Noah Lowry won his 10th game on Friday as he turned in another solid, quality start. Tim Lincecum turned in his 5th straight quality start on Saturday and he did it in impressive fashion going 8 shutout innings while striking out 8 and only allowing 5 baserunners against one of the best lineups in the National League. Those who had their questions about whether Tim Lincecum should be sent back down to triple A or be sent to the bullpen when he was struggling a few weeks back are now seeing the answer. The rook has now turned his season around in a few short starts as he's knocked about 2 points off his era in the last month while continuing to strike out over a batter per inning. Lincecum is really starting to find his groove. With the season pretty much all but over as far as contending for the playoffs, I like focusing on the young players, and I'm definitely looking forward to ...

Barry Bonds is headed back to the All-Star game. If Tim Lincecum keeps this up, it won’t be long before the rookie right-hander is there, too. Lincecum struck out a career-high 12 batters and got a key hit — and rare praise — from Bonds as the San Francisco Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks ...
Lincecum's Struggles Continue
2007-06-14 00:43:00
Tim Lincecum turned in his 3rd straight sub-par outing on Wednesday, a game in which the Giants had a chance to sweep a series, something they haven't done in about a month. Lincecum's lack of control continues to be his downfall. His stuff is amazing, but he's consistently getting himself behind in counts and putting himself in situations where he has to give in to hitters. Wednesday's start was his worst start of the season, even worse than his debut outing vs. the Mets, and it was the second time in a row Lincecum failed to complete five innings. His recent struggles have raised the question to some as to whether it's time to start thinking about Lincecum in the closing role? My feelings on that... No Way. You can't decide to alter a guy with this much potential because he's had a few bad outings early in his rookie season. We all know young pitchers go through ups and downs in early on, and even guys praised as highly as Lincecum are not always going to come up and domina...

Lewis and Lincecum Give Giants a Lift
2007-05-14 01:07:00
The Giants finally made a couple of roster moves heading into the weekend series vs. the Rockies. It was no secret that Todd Linden was not getting it done at the major league level, as he was having trouble just making contact with the baseball, so the Giants designated him for assignment. It was also evident that the Giants would need another center fielder after Dave Roberts had surgery Friday. They called up Dan Ortmier to take Lindens spot, and Freddie Lewis to take Roberts' spot, and the two call-ups have already made an impact. Ortmier along with Kevin Frandsen both swung the bat very well in Denver, but the surprise was Lewis. Freddie Lewis became the 23rd major league rookie in history to hit for the cycle on Sunday as he went 5-6 with 4 RBI's and 3 runs scored. Lewis hit a home run, drove in 7 runs and is had 7 hits in his 14 at-bats over the weekend. Lewis has already done more in a couple of games than Linden did in a month and a half with the team. Matter of fact, he ...

Lincecum Learns In His Debut
2007-05-07 23:58:00
The Giants most praised farm prospect in years, even more than Matt Cain and Jesse Foppert, made his much anticipated major league debut on Sunday. It wasn't a debut to write home about for Lincecum as he gave up 4 earned runs in 4 1/3 innings work. He gave up to long home runs to a new Giants' nemesis, Shane Victorino, as well as a majestic shot to reigning MVP Ryan Howard. Besides the two mistakes to Victorino and Howard, Lincecum's location was a little shaky as he walked 5 batters. For a highly hyped major league debut on national television, I wasn't too surprised with the results we saw from Lincecum. There was no doubt he was amped, making his major league debut and all so It shouldn't come to any ones surprise that he hung a few pitches and walked some guys. The only thing that I noticed that gave me a little concern was how Lincecum's velocity seemed to drop as his pitch count rose. He came out of the gate throwing 97-99 in the first inning, but by the 5th, he was d...
Tim Lincecum's Debut Line
2007-05-07 04:12:00
Tim Lincecum's Major League debut is officially in the books: 4.1 innings, 4 ER, 5 hits, 5 BB, 5 Ks.  The performance was less than inspiring; his biggest mistake was a two-run home run to Shane Victorino in the first inning.  That Victorino has been playing the way he has is clearly an example of the fantasy gods mocking me for dropping him. Off the cuff I do wonder whether Lincecum will end up a reliever.  Yes, it was one stinking start, but he did lose a decent amount of velocity by the fifth inning.  He was blazing at 95-97 in the first but was around 92-93 with shaky command by the end.  Obviously we need to give the kid a good 40 starts before we can say where he belongs with an ounce of confidence. Anyway, who was able to guess Lincecum's line with the most accuracy?  I'll start by narrowing it down to those who guessed 4.1 innings and 4 runs.  That would be Raindoggg, who predicted "he craps his pants a bit."  Well, yes, I...
Tim Lincecum
2007-05-07 03:09:00
With pitching sensation Tim Lincecum about to prove all the prospect-focused commentators correct, I wonder if he deserves a moniker of royaltyy like his younger counter-part in Seattle or if he can simply be as fearsome as this: Follow. But. Follow only if ye be men of valour, for the entrance to this cave is guarded by a creature so foul, so cruel that no man yet has fought with it and lived. Bones of full fifty men lie strewn about its lair. So, brave knights, if you do doubt your courage or your strength, come no further, for death awaits you all with nasty, big, pointy teeth. As Arthur King of the Britons asked:Q:Who are you who can summon fire without flint or tinder? A:There are some who call me... Tim. Can Tim the Enchanter conjure up images so fearsome that opposing hitters will soil their armor like Sir Robin?

Lincecum, Wood, Sally & Doumit: Prospect Edition   According to the Giants radio broadcast, super prospect Tim Lincecum is going to be called up and added to the Giants rotation on Sunday. Say what you will about the management in San Fran, but they have recently produced two future #1 ace level pitching prospects in Cain & Lincecum. To say that Tim has dominated AAA so far this season would be an understatement. In five starts, he has an ERA of 0.29, a opposing average of .119 and 46 SO in only 31 IP.   How about this: Lincecum & Cain, Pray for Rain.   (trademark mopupduty.com)….   If your in need of a cheap bat in your fantasy league, give Pirates RF/C Ryan Doumit a look. Originally a hot shot prospect back in 2005, Doumit has faltered in recent times and has even been moved to a corner outfield/1st base platoon role with the emergence of Ronny Paulino. A major source of power, Doumit slugged .717 in his brief 16 game stint in AAA this season, and so far has...
Tim Lincecum To Pitch Sunday For Giants
2007-05-04 13:49:00
The news of Tim Lincecum, the most anticipated rookie starter since Matt Cain, came in Thursday from the San Francisco Giants camp. Following a 4-0 start in AAA Fresno where he sported a 0.29 ERA, a 46:11 k:bb ratio and has given up only 12 hits in 31 innings, Lincecum will get his first major league start Sunday evening, on national television, no less. Lincecum is ranked 11th on Baseball America’s Top 100 Prospects report where he draws comparisons to “Bullet” Bob Feller and Sandy Koufax. Technorati Tags: Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants
Lincecum To Start For Giants On ESPN Sunday
2007-05-04 12:51:00
If you’ve wanted to see Tim Lincecum pitch but don’t live around the Bay Area, you’ll get your chance on Sunday. The Giants announced Thursday night that Lincecum will be promoted to the big leagues to replace Russ Ortiz, who was placed on the disabled list with a sore elbow. As Baseball America correspondent Andy Baggarly explains in today’s San Jose Mercury News, the Giants called up second baseman Kevin Fransden to replace Ortiz on the roster. They’ll make another roster to move to add Lincecum to the roster before Sunday. The callup to the majors completes a rocket-like ascent for Lincecum. He spent only 62 innings in the minors, where his final minor league statistics almost defy comprehension: 6-0 with a 0.99 ERA. He allowed 26 hits and 23 walks in 63 2/3 innings while striking out 104. His stats this season have been even more impressive. After making the jump from high Class A San Jose to Triple-A Fresno, Lincecum allowed only one run in five st...
Puzzle Pieces: Here Comes Lincecum
2007-05-04 04:41:00
There’s so much going on right now that I just feel overwhelmed. So I’ll give you some brief points for discussion, and let you take it from there. After much speculation, Timothy LeRoy Lincecum will start on Sunday in shiny ESPN HD. I figure he’ll be here for the rest of the year; not expecting an ERA in the low-2’s or anything, but low 3’s with a great K-rate is definitely possible. Come to think of it, after seeing what he’s done in the minors this season, anything is possible. Typo-free, I assure you: 31 innings, 46 strikeouts, a single run. He’s been gone for several days in all of my leagues, but if for some crazy reason he’s still on your waiver wire, get him now. Jason Frasor just blew it again, and this strikes me as the last chance he’ll get. I’ve picked up Jeremy Accardo in three leagues now. Something about tonight’s start was so quintiessential Dave Bush: allow zero runs through six innings, allow four ru...
Mailbag: Lincecum For Hamels?
2007-05-03 22:05:00
From the mailbag: Someone offered me Hamels for Lincecum. I'm inclined to take the guy who's already pitching (even though I already have plenty of SP's, so I don't need the innings unless they're good). Whom do you prefer? I'd stick with Hamels here.  His career line: 173 innings3.95 ERA1.26 WHIP8.23 H/91.25 HR/93.12 BB/99.78 K/9 Give him a mulligan for May, June, and July, and he's significantly better.  It's fair to give him the benefit of the doubt given that June and July were the first two full months of his MLB career, and he progressed rapidly in '06. Everyone agrees that Lincecum is going to be amazing, but he's still riskier than Cole Hamels right now.  Plus, can we really count on him topping Hamels's career line by any decent margin?  We can imagine it, but to count on it is a stretch.  Another point is that Lincecum pitched 157 professional innings last year.  Since he's already thrown 31, he's going to be limited and/or fatig...
Ian Stewart on Tim Lincecum
2007-05-03 21:33:00
Triple-A Fresno righthander Tim Lincecum whiffed 14 in his last start against Colorado Springs, getting Sky Sox third baseman Ian Stewart twice. And it’s not like Stewart is struggling this season. A 2003 first-round pick of the Rockies, Stewart is hitting .318/.375/.409 with a pair of home runs in 88 at-bats. The 22-year-old third baseman calls Lincecum ‘the toughest pitcher I ever faced,’ and goes further in this breakdown of what it’s like to face him: “Oh, man that was hard,” Stewart said. “He’s just a max-effort guy with a really different windup and you can’t see the ball at all until it’s right on top of you. It gets on you real quick. “He kind of leans back over second base and then comes right over the top. Guys on our club who have been in the big leagues said he’s the toughest guy they ever faced too, so that should tell you something. “And though you only get a very short glance of the ball bef...
Spot May Soon Open For Lincecum
2007-05-02 22:54:00
The Giants may have a spot for Tim Lincecum without trading anyone after all. Russ Ortiz has separated himself from the rest of the pack of starting pitchers on the team with an awful start vs. the Rockies at home. Ortiz raised his era to 6.44, and also raised some questions as to how many more starts he'll get until the young phenom, Lincecum, is indeed called up from Fresno. Tuesday night's start was the first time all season in which Ortiz was real bad, but besides his start in Pittsburgh, there really hasn't been any flashes of Ortiz pitching that well. He has had a couple of below average starts vs. the Dodgers, one in which he had to get a little bit of luck in order to avoid being knocked out in the 3rd inning. That being said, the Giants are a lot better off having Ortiz be serviceable so, I am not ready to quit on him. If the Giants are planning on trading one of their starters for some much needed offensive help, they are going to need Ortiz to be in the rotation. Howev...
Relief Unlikely For Lincecum
2007-05-01 18:06:00
The most definitive statements regarding Tim Lincecum-as-reliever came out yesterday from the Giants' director of player personnel.  Bobby Evans said there's no reason to force Lincecum to make an adjustment, and the team has no plans to use him in relief.  He'll remain a starter, as Matt Cain did when he got the call.  I haven't heard any whispers about the Giants going to a six-man rotation.  It seems that San Francisco will wait for one more month, perhaps searching for the slightest reason to demote someone from the rotation.  Given the peripherals of some of them, they should have their reason soon enough.

Tim Lincecum
2007-04-30 02:42:00
It's time.  Normally, I wouldn't suggest picking-up minor league players before they are recalled, but I am making an exception in the case of Giants starting pitcher Tim Lincecum.  In his 5th start in AAA, Lincecum (pronounced Lin-ceh-cum) struck out 14 batters in six innings and allowed three hits while walking none. For the season, his line is stunning 31 IP, 46K, 23 Runners Allowed (12 hits and 11 BBs).  46 Ks in 31 AAA innings?  With the Giants bullpen doing all it can to deny #1 SP Matt Cain the 2007 CY Young, Lincecum could be the 2005 version of Mariano Rivera that every team has sought for the past twelve years - in a worst case scenario. For those who don't recall Mo's 1995 season, he pitched 107.1 innings and struck out 130 with a 2.09 ERA and 1.00 WHiP.
