Promises and Trust, Words and Linguistics
2009-02-13 21:34:00 Following my previous post, I very much appreciated metal sunflower's response:This is an open letter, and if I thought that it would be welcome, I?d have started it with the words ?Dear Incurable Hippy?. But if I?m angry with people, the last thing I want is for them to be civil without saying anything helpful. So I?m not going to do it here. What I would like to say is that the Sheffield Fems as a group have been wrong, and have done wrong, and that I, personally, have done wrong. And for all of that, I am sorry.I don?t want to try to offer any glib explanations.I have been wrong. I haven?t done enough. I saw your post last time you publicly showed how angry you were. I saw it and brought it up at a meeting and asked that something be done about it. I didn?t follow up on it. I should have done. I should have kept asking, and kept looking for different venues, and kept insisting that we did something about the pub, and I didn?t do any of those things. I don?t hold the Sheffield Fem...
The Moriori and the Dangers of Pacifism
2008-11-27 11:10:00 Updated November 28:The saga of Moriori is instructive. The Maori have long been known as ferocious headhunters and cannibals who had one of the cruelest and evillest cultures on Earth. The Moiriori seem to be a Maori split dating back to about 1500 or so. They left New Zealand and colonized the Chatham Islands. The Chatham Islands are small, very cold and isolated, and there is not a lot of food other than from the sea.Moiriori legend has it that initially, widespread tribal warfare, headhunting and cannibalism was practiced as the normative cruel Maori culture. On such a small island, this savagery was disastrous, and soon the population plummeted to near extinction. A leader arose among the Moiriori, Nunuku-whenua, who preached a new doctrine of extreme pacifism, Nunuku's Law. Nunuku's Law was strictly adhered to 300 years.Fighting was allowed between males, but it had to be conducted with each armed with a stick the width of a finger. At the first sign of blood, the duel was ca...

The Origin of the Amerindians
2008-10-18 14:10:00 The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here. The famous Russian neo-Nazi video is on this blog here.Updated October 18. I am republishing this post because I added a lot of new photos and text. Enjoy. As we noted in an earlier post, the view is converging that Amerindians can be traced back to the Altai Mountains in Southwest Siberia where China, Mongolia and Russia all come together.Yet another study found that of all Asians, the Turkic-speaking tribes of the Sayan Mountains (west of the Altai Mountains and north of northwestern Mongolia) are the closest to the Amerindians. This group includes the Shor, the Tofalar, the Altai, the Khakass, the Soyots and the Tuva. The Mongolic-speaking Buryats are also included. The Altai live in the Sayan Uplands. The Soyots and the Buryats are from the Eastern Sayan Mountains. The Shor and the Khakass are from the northwest slopes of the Sayans. The Tofalar are from the northern slopes of the Eastern Sayans...

Some Remarks on the Minority Languages Question
2008-10-12 08:53:00 The recent posts on minority languages have elicited some interesting comments. Commenting on The Record of Communist Language Policy, silver, a Serb, notes: In Eastern Europe, a similar thing occurred with the fall of the Communist regimes. In general, nationalist regimes took their place and quickly began attacking minorities and minority tongues. This has been most pronounced in the former Yugoslavia.I'm not aware of Serbian nationalists attempting to suppress Hungarian or Albanian. Even throughout the supposedly nationalist Milosevic era I think Hungarians were able to graduate university in Hungarian (and, of course, Albanian in Kosovo). I'm pretty sure Albanian has fared better in Macedonia under independence than during Yugoslavia; little-known Vlach certainly has. A new poster, A Jew Coming to Get You, who will be tolerated as long as he behaves, notes: A relevant book discussing Soviet nationality policy is called Affirmative Action Empire. Regarding the Chinese dialect...

Genes and Language Match Well
2008-10-08 21:00:00 This post will look into whether or not genes and language line up well. The question may seem academic, but it is important for linguists in the battle for whether or not there is anything to the large macro-families that the "lumpers" are creating. It's yet another skirmish in the lumpers versus splitters battle in Historical Linguistics. Historical in the branch that deals with language families, language relationships and reconstruction of old languages that are no longer spoken. The debate has heated up in recent years due to the prominence of lumper theories publicized by the late Joseph Greenberg and his followers and disciples, notably Merrit Ruhlen at Stanford University. Ruhlen and Greenberg use a technique called mass comparison which has come under a lot of wild and irrational abuse, but seems to be a valid scientific method in the hands of an expert.Greenberg used to come up with the four major language families of Africa a long time ago and his classification there has ...

Migration and Language Policy
2008-10-07 03:25:00 In comments on the The Record of Communist Language Policy post, James Schipper notes astutely: One very important aspect of language policy is migration. The more migration there is within a multilingual state, the more minority languages are threatened. If Russians are free to move move into Latvia, then the Latvian language will be in danger, even if Latvian remains an official language in Latvia. We are seeing this in Tibet too. The influx of Chinese in Tibet is the real danger to the Tibetan language. In the capital of Tibet, the Chinese are already the majority. The smaller a people is, the more they have to be able to control immigration if they want to survive as a nation.Of course, by making its territory rigidly unilingual, the minority can create a linguistic barrier to immigration. If Latvian is the sole language of administration and instruction in Latvia, then Russians will think twice before settling there. For minority languages there are two basic rules: concentrate ...

The Record of Communist Language Policy
2008-10-07 01:30:00 A commenter posting on the Cool Neo-Latin Websites post critiques what he sees as a disconnect in my views: That's funny you support preserving small languages, because most communists do not and prefer centralization and one mass-language for everyone. For instance, the communists in the USSR did much to stamp out local languages by forcing all people living within its boundaries to learn Russian first and foremost in state schools (which they were forced to attend). They did somewhat try to preserve local languages in the so called "autonomous regions" within the Soviet empire, but still many local languages were lost in the forced shuffle from locally-based economies to the centralized/state-run economy where Russian reigned supreme. In China a similar situation is taking place...many languages and dialects have been lost and are continuing to be lost as the communists there forcibly centralize everything in sight and institute Mandarin over all else. I respond: First of all, I w...

Cool Neo-Latin Websites
2008-10-06 07:47:00 Updated October 6:Forgive me a bit while I trip off into obscure Romance linguistics here for a bit, but I'm really getting off on this little journey. Here is the website for La Quotidiana, an online and printed daily newspaper in the Romansch language. This is the closest Romance language of all to Latin itself.Below are a couple of websites entirely in the Ladin language. Ladin is spoken in northeastern Italy, in the Eastern Alps. The specific range is called the Dolomites. Ladin is a weird-looking language. At first you think it's French, then...no, it can't be. Wait, it's Italian, no, not quite. You keep thinking Romanian, but that's wrong too. The one thing that keeps hitting you is that it looks so much like Classic Latin.Noeles.net is said to be the only online Ladin newspaper. Ladins da Friul is even better. It's also entirely in Ladin, but it has lots of really cool photos. The people in this region are isolated in small mountain valleys, wear strange but fascinating ...

Really Cool Friulian Site
2008-10-03 20:22:00 Updated October 4:This very well-done site is all in the Friulian language. Has lots of good graphics and tons of great links. I can't read it, but it's cool to look at it. If you can read Friulian (or Furlan in Friulian) give it a go. It's also interesting how many bloggers are blogging in Friulian.Italy now accepts Friulian as a minority language and schools are now offering it as a course. It's still spoken by 794,000 speakers in the region. It's spoken in far northeastern Italy. Friulian is closest to Ladin and Romansch. That is, it's straight up from Vulgar Latin along with those two. Those three languages are probably the closest to pure Latin of any of the Romance languages. There are quite a few Friulian speakers in Canada. Until recently, the region was quite poor, hence many speakers left the area. There are also some speakers in Argentina and Brazil. Good overview here.

Words of the Day
2008-08-08 09:47:00 Etiolated and Pecksniffian. Both used in the comments section by avant-garde artist whodareswings.Etiolated refers to what happens to a plant when it is deprived of sunlight. The stems grow tall and wiry and chlorophyll seems to leave the plant, giving it a ghostly, green-white look. Whoredare attempted to use it describe people, and said it meant "effete", but I could not find any good definitions.Pecksniffian is a wonderful word. It refers to a character, or three characters, in the 1844 Charles Dickens novel Martin Chuzzlewit. I've never read the book, but the Wikipedia synopsis was pretty delightful. That man could write a story! The online dictionary defines it as:Unctuously hypocritical, sanctimonious. And offers the following example:"His book suffers from excessively long harangues against Pecksniffian prigs and temperance types who, he claims, are still trying to ruin our fun." (Mark D. Fefer, Seattle Weekly, January 22, 2003).It describes the main character as:Seth Pecksnif...

Tiki-Tiki Has 250 Words?
2008-05-05 06:32:00 Forget it.Via Marilyn Vos Savant in today's Parade Magazine, we are told that Tiki-Tiki, otherwise known as Sranan Togo, a creole with 100,000 native speakers and many more second languages speakers on Suriname, has the smallest vocabulary of any known language - with only 250 words. This claim is credulously repeated elsewhere on the Net.It is true that Internet dictionaries of Tiki-Tiki do show few words, possibly as few as several hundred. The SIL (Summer Institute of Linguistics) page says that Sranan Togo has maybe 3,000-4,000 words, as opposed to hundreds of thousands of words for major world languages (Vos Savant notes that English has the largest vocabulary at 250,000).Many of those English words are neologisms, that is, new words that are being created on the fly, especially on places like the Internet. I actually think that English has more than 250,000 words, but I can't prove it. As slang and whatnot proliferates in a widely spoken language, it gets pretty darn hard ...

Great Site on Endangered Languages of Europe
2008-05-04 10:27:00 Great site on endangered languages of Europe. Tapani Salinem, a Finnish linguist, has done a bang-up job on this stuff. This report was prepared for UNESCO.The last good report I read on this subject was a great book published in 1976 called something like The Endangered Languages of Europe. Great little book if you can ever find it, and it covers pretty much most of the larger ones anyway.Salinem is decidedly pessimistic, but I am not so much so. Furthermore, he often pessimistically notes that this or that language is heavily contaminated by some larger nearby language that the speaker usually also speaks. I don't think that this is all that relevant. Most modern languages nowadays are full of borrowings, often from English, for all sorts of modern words. What matters is that you are speaking. Borrowing is a natural phenomenon, whether for lexis, syntax, phonology, morphology or whatever. It's been happening for 1000's of years. He often notes that not many children are learning...

?eby zmniejszy? zapisy, to w?a?nie wy??czenie edycji i usuwania postów.I am not sure how many languages look like this one. Looks like lots of special characters in the character set. Of course, another European language. I'd be amazed if anyone missed this one, but I've seen stranger things.Lots of hits coming in for a particular video from this country lately. Looks like they have a pretty good IT infrastructure up, strange as it seems. One wonders about their economy and whether things are actually better 17 years down the road. Oh, well, enough clues, as if you needed any, right? One of my readers said these are too easy. He's right. That's the general idea here - I taunt my r...

Every now and again I get links to the blog from sites written in strange languages that I cannot at first identify, but can only identify by running snippets of them through Google and analyzing the results. Here is one, and I do not have the foggiest idea what it says: Snimci koji se ovde postuju mogu da vam zagorcaju ceo zivot. Ocekujte jos kasnije. Ne salim se. Answers in the comments. I'll give you a hint: it's a European language.

The Peopling of the Philippines
2008-02-12 11:22:00 The peopling of the Philippines is a bit better understood than the peopling of Indonesia described in my previous post. At least we know that most of the Philippines was first settled long ago by Negritos. An Aeta Negrito woman of the Philippines. White Nationalists and Afrocentrists both insist that these folks are Black people, but they are very distant from African Blacks. White people are much closer to Blacks than these Negritos. Genetically, these people resemble the Filipinos they live with.Their skulls resemble other Australoid types such as Papuans and Aborigines. Genetically, they are classed as Asians. They are part of the Southeast Asian Major Race. Their minor race is known as the Philippines Negrito Race. It includes the Ati, Aeta and, strangely, the Palau of Micronesia.Unlike many other places where the Negritos seem to have died out or transcended to other forms, in the Philippines they still exist in a relatively pristine form, even if they are going extinct, cul...
