This time of year gives me anxiety.  It is the over indulging, dark afternoons and intense socializing.   One tradition that makes December brighter is giving back and helpings others.  In 2010 I wrote about Bundle of Joy, a charity that gives diapers to babies that don’t have clean diapers.  If you have diapers that don’t fit... Federally Mandated Literacy Tests to Buy Newspapers, Religion Classes to At
2010-07-10 02:56:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Democrats might be right. It's obvious that Americans have become a stupid people. Our schools have disgorged students who have fallen to the bottom of the barrel in literacy, math and science scores, late-night comedians have no lack for citizens on the street that have no cue about law or history, and as voters.... well, as voters we've been stupid enough to elect people like James Traficant, John Edwards, Robert "KKK" Byrd, "Benedict" Arlen Specter, Pete Stark, or for that matter Jimmy Carter and Barack Hussein Obama. We need help and what better entity than government to rescue us? So, we need some new rules so that Americans can be better controlled. I've gotten this great...
"Comic Book Literacy" spotlights learning to read through love of
2010-03-14 18:43:00
I've written before about how I gained a love for reading through comic books.I grew up in a primarily Spanish-speaking household, and as an incentive to help me read English, when I was young my dad would buy me comic books at the local grocery store. Not only did reading comics help me learn to read, but they instilled a love of reading all kinds of literature. Now I am very pleased to see that there is a new documentary film that addresses that very phenomenon.  The film is called 'Comic Book Literacy' and it will be screened at the upcoming Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo (C2E2).  Woot!Read the press release after the jump!...

“Video” = Literacy?
2009-03-03 14:20:00
Phillip Hodgetts at The present and future of post production business and technology blog posed the question: What if “video” is just another form of literacy?. Of course!. Think about what a rich communications environment we would have! Phillip is a very well respected and talented video professional and I hope his rhetorical question resonates in that community. It actually gets to the core of what we talk about here at DoingMedia. ALL media production disciplines are necessary to fully communicate your messages. That includes video but also, audio, websites and blogs, even live (eww, PowerPoint) presentations. The semiconductor chip has made all of this possible. The availability of cheap machines that enable sophisticated functionality allow anyone to be a video maven. Of course, that’s the risk. Anyone CAN create video (or other media) because so many people (the Digital natives) have never known a time without that ability. But there’s literacy and then there...

Literacy Chasm Exists Between Shills For "Financial Crack Dealers"
2008-12-17 07:16:00
Some schmo actually wrote this "steaming pile" entitled "How To Sell So-called Structured Settlements""Structur-ed settlements do guarantee a steady flow of income, but they are given in "bits", or periodic payments. For some that settled a case with this method, there does come a time when they need a lot of cash during some point of time, usually when the payment from the structured settlement isn't due yet".First it's "point in time" NOT "point of time". For example  "at some point in time", although in my case I could say what's the point of wasting my time with this schmo's run on sentence? A "steady flow" and  "bits" is a non sequitur. Perhaps the cash now pushers in question could add to their "to do list" that a modicum of literacy is prerequisite to hiring shills .

"The Debacle of Testing Literacy Ability"
2008-05-10 22:19:00
As those who follow the education scene know well, literacy testing takes up a huge amount of time, effort and money. Tom Sticht, an international consultant in education, in reviewing the field has termed the situation "The Debacle of Testing Literacy Ability." He summarizes the state of affairs as follows: "Despite extensive use of standardized tests by the 50 states, 30-year reading trend data show minimal if any improvement for 9-, 13-, or 17-year-old children since the early 1970s...Further, the testing of adult literacy in 1992 and again in 2003 shows little or no improvement in literacy at the lowest levels and a decline at the highest levels."

Kitchen Literacy 3
2008-02-15 00:03:00
View the video here. In part 3 of Kitchen Literacy, Ann Vileisis talks about the need to start making connections between our consumption of food, and all the interrelated social, health, and environmental consequences that occur. Agricultural pollution is a large source of pollution in the United States. In her book, Ann looks to history to see how food, and our connection to food has changed, so that we may become better aware (again) about the food we choose to eat. Eating well is an effective way to improve our knowledge about food, our own health, and the health of the environment. What does eating well mean to you? Related: The Big Leap Warning: The views expressed in this (related) video are not the mainstream view on western society’s degree of consumption, corporate power, advertising, and effects upon the environment, and on indigenous peoples throughout the world. Regardless, they are worth hearing, and evaluating for yourself; these ideas relate, in our opin...

Cultural Literacy
2008-01-28 03:51:00
Last week I asked several Mexican friends a few basic questions about this country, just to test their cultural literacy. I started out with asking them to name a few Mexican writers. The first insisted that Gabriel Garcia Marquez was a Mexican writer. Doesn't Colombia ring a bell? The second came up with Octavio Paz and Carlos Fuentes, claiming that he couldn't think of any more off the bat. The third admitted that she could not name a single one. Haven't these folks heard of Juana Inés de la Cruz, Carlos Pellicer, Denise Dresser, Juan Ruiz de Alarcon, Ramon Lopez Velarde, Manuel Othon, Manuel Gutierrez Najera, Elena Poniatowska, Anita Brenner, Carlos Monsivàis, Homero Aridjis, Juan Rulfo, Guadalupe Loaeza, Laura Esquivel, Margo Glantz, Sara Sefchovich and and Guadalupe Marín, just for starters? Singaporeans need to boost their investment literacy: financial expert-Sing

Singaporeans need to boost their investment literacy: financial expert-Singapore By Julia Ng, SINGAPORE : Community Development Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan says Singaporeans lack financial and investment knowledge. And he says this is one area the Ministry will have to focus on - which a financial planning expert agrees. Thousands of senior citizens and their families thronged the inaugural Silver Industry Exhibition. Many came to check out innovative products and services that cater specially for the silver-haired. Some also took opportunity to find out if they are ‘retirement ready’. Dr Balakrishnan, who opened the exhibition, says the huge turnout is a good sign that Singaporeans recognise that ageing is an important area worth paying attention to and investing in. But retirement financial planning is one large area which he feels Singaporeans could brush up on. He says: “The level of financial knowledge in Singapore is still inadequate. So I’m also gl...

Media literacy: do people really...
2007-12-21 17:29:00
Media literacy: do people really understand how to make the most of blogs, search engines or interactive TV? The media are changing, and so is citizens' use of such media. New information and communication technologies make it much easier for anybody to retrieve and disseminate information, communicate, publish or even broadcast. The ability of people to critically analyse what they find in the media and to make more informed choices – called 'media literacy' – therefore becomes even more essential for active citizenship and democracy. Following an EU-wide survey last year, the European Commission has announced today its plans to encourage the development of media literacy and the exchange of good practice across Europe. "In a digital era, media literacy is crucial for achieving full and active citizenship," said Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding. "The ability to read and write – or traditional literacy – is no ...

Funniest Children's Books
2007-11-15 16:00:00
National Children's Book Week is November 12-18 so I'm posting more on children's literature. If I can read a book that makes me laugh I'm going to enjoy the experience even more so here are the funniest children's books I've found (though humor is a rather transient, mutable thing and what's funny today may not be funny in 30 years).1. The Ricky Ricotta series. Written by Dav Pilkey of "Captain Underpants" fame (not one of my favorite series as I get enough underwear jokes in my life as it is thankyouverymuch) but Ricky is fun because it's reminiscent of a comic book which is great for early readers yet good for a chuckle or two from the adults. Ricky Ricotta battles Mutant Mosquitoes from Mercury, Voodoo Vultures from Venus, Mecha-Monkies from Mars, Jurassic Jackrabbits from Jupiter, Stupid Stinkbugs from Saturn and Uranium Unicorns from Uranus. With villains like that, you know you're going to enjoy them.2. A Series of Unfortunate Events. Written by Lemony Snickett...
