However, recent recalls of millions of Li-ion batteries due to overheating have raised safety concerns, with researchers seeking new materials to make safer, more powerful batteries. In the new study, compared the performance of Li-ion batteries made with electrodes composed of lithium nickel nitride (LiNiN) to conventional Li-ion batteries containing carbon electrodes. The new materials are more efficient than the conventional electrodes and less likely to overheat, the researchers suggest ( for example Ni-MH JVC BN-V22U never overheat). Now Auto Motor und Sport out of Germany is reporting that an updated version could begin testing in the U.S. as early as 2009. The current model uses high temperature sodium-nickel-chloride Zebra batteries. The new generation will switch to a lithium ion pack and could be tested in the Los Angeles area. There are no specs available at the moment, but Smart's Anders Jensen has said that if the testing provides positive results the car could move to production quickly. Given the relatively disappointing fuel economy of the gasoline-powered version of the ForTwo, an electric drive model could prove quite popular. It now turns out the companies have been working together on the technology since 2000. Not only that, they have been field testing a fleet of twenty hybrid Nissan Tinos equipped with lithium batteries since 2004. At the SAE Hybrid Vehicle Technology Symposium in San Diego this week, Nissan's Toshio Hirota revealed the test program that they have been running. One of the twenty cars has run over 150,000 miles. According to Toshio, they are evaluating many different chemistries, but the test program has been running with cells that use a manganese spinel anode. That's the same type being supplied by LG Chem for the Chevy Volt development program. The packs have so far proven to be very efficient and provide more consistent power than NiMH packs. 2008-02-03 11:06:00 John Reed inthe Financial Times reports that Johnson Controls and Saft, a U.S. supplier group and French battery producer, respectively, are set to break ground on a factory dedicated to the exclusive production of advanced lithium-ion batteries for cars. The facility, which will supply a range of automakers, including GM, Chrysler and Mercedes-Benz, is based in Nersac, France; its yearly production capacity will initially be 5,000 battery packs with the option to scale up if demand warrants it.Lithium-ion battery packs, which are about half the size and weight of nickel-metal hydride batteries, will power the next generation of hybrid, electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The factory plans to expand its operations over time to supply other facilities around the world, particularly in Asia. Among other projects they are one of the two suppliers chosen for GM's Saturn Vue plug-in hybrid program. Saft has also provided lithium ion battery packs for concept vehicles such as the Chevy Sequel and Ford HySeries drive Edge. The two companies are opening a new plant in Nersac, France to manufacture lithium batteries for a variety of car-makers including Mercedes-Benz, Chrysler and General Motors. The €15million plant has an initial capacity of 5,000 packs a year and will be able to scale up as demand increases. Toyota and Panasonic are also doing feasibility studies for an automotive lithium battery production line at their joint venture battery plant. But that should not be interpreted to mean that Toyota feels the technology is ready for prime time yet. Watanabe made it very clear that the PHEV fleet would comprise only a few hundred vehicles for a field test and would not be offered to the public. The company wants to evaluate how the batteries perform in the real world, but still keep them relatively under control until they achieve a certain degree of confidence.
