Rockies interested in adding Livan Hernandez (AP)
2008-08-06 10:43:00 The Colorado Rockies confirmed that they are interested in adding veteran pitcher Livan Hernandez, put on waivers Friday by the Minnesota Twins. A Denver Post report on its Website cited a major league source confirming the Rockies put in a claim for the Hernandez. After the team’s 8-2 win over Washington on Tuesday night, Colorado’s ...

Could Livan Hernandez Become Available?
2008-05-28 14:07:00 Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press doesn't exactly say that the Twins are willing to trade Livan Hernandez. Here's what he wrote: It's too early, with the Twins still in contention. But starter Livan Hernandez's trade value probably won't be higher than it is now, and it will be interesting to see whether the right-hander, 33, is dealt for some power by the All-Star Game in July. Hernandez has interesting numbers. He has the second-lowest strikeout rate in baseball, coupled with the fifth-worst hit rate. To counter that, Hernandez has the 10th-best walk rate. Walter's suggestion that Hernandez is at peak value seems accurate. Could Hernandez bring back a decent power bat? Buster Olney names the Braves and Astros as two teams that might be looking for a pitcher like Livan. The Twins are only two games out, however.

Livan Hernandez (P-MIN)
2008-04-01 14:36:00 Hernandez stuck to his plan of getting outs the old-fashioned way: he used his defense. He pitched seven innings on Opening Day in Minnesota against the Los Angeles Angels and allowed two runs on seven hits as the Twins won, 3-2. He threw just 84 pitches and did not walk a batter. He struck out one. None of this pitches topped 85 mph, including a curveball that crossed the plate at around 60 mph. That led to some easy ground-ball outs.

Nats Made Offer To Livan Hernandez?
2008-02-01 10:36:00 According to Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News: Right-hander Livan Hernandez, who had been on hold with the Mets in case they didn't land Johan Santana, now is telling interested teams that he has an offer to return to Washington. The Nationals have been interested in Hernandez since at least November. He pitched for the organization from March of '03 to August of '06. Livan made $7MM in '07, which was actually down from $8MM each of the previous yearse. The Nats probably don't want to go beyond one year.

Livan Hernandez Close To Deal With Mets?
2008-01-25 09:27:00 Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News writes: Right-hander Livan Hernandez, who is a workhorse, is close to a deal with the Mets, where he will be reunited with brother Orlando Hernandez. This would seem to have Johan Santana implications, if it is finalized. Livan and Kyle Lohse were kind of the Plan B if they couldn't acquire an ace via trade. But, as some commenters mentioned, signing Hernandez would not preclude a Johan trade.

Mets Pitching Plans
2007-12-31 18:43:00 Many readers have written me asking what the Mets are going to do to upgrade their starting rotation. Matthew Cerrone as a man in the know, and he's written a summary over at MetsBlog. Cerrone senses nothing much cooking on the Johan Santana front, yet the Mets remain "oddly confident." Cerrone believes the Mets will probably sign one rehabber - Freddy Garcia or Bartolo Colon. He says reviews on Colon in the Dominican Winter League have been positive. Omar Minaya knows Colon well, having traded the farm for him as GM of the Expos. Garcia may be ready to pitch around June. Coming off a frayed rotator cuff and labrum he may not contribute much in 2008. Bullpen wise, Cerrone says Octavio Dotel is on the radar, especially if Aaron Heilman is traded. There's a lack of buzz with the Mets for Kyle Lohse, Livan Hernandez, and Joe Blanton currently. showad();

Today's Arbitration Decisions
2007-12-01 19:18:00 The decision whether to offer your own free agent arbitration can affect your team in two ways: you may end up retaining a player you didn't want, or you may score a draft pick or two as compensation. With that in mind let's run down the rumors regarding some Type A and B free agents. The Red Sox plan on offering arbitration to Type B Eric Gagne. Worst case scenario, they hang onto him for one more year. Best case, they get a sandwich pick. The Astros have to decide on Trever Miller and Mark Loretta. Both are Type Bs, but the Astros might not want them back. Richard Justice notes that the old Astro regime made a mistake not offering arbitration to Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte. The Angels decided not to offer arby to Bartolo Colon, because the most they could give him would be a 20% pay cut. So best case scenario they could get him for one year, $11.2MM. Colon is not a Type A or B, so there's no compensation regardless. The Phils will ...

Tigers Interested In Livan Hernandez
2007-11-15 22:43:00 According to Jon Paul Morosi, the Tigers are interested in free agent starter Livan Hernandez. Livan, of course, has connections with Jim Leyland, Gary Sheffield, and Edgar Renteria from his Marlins days. The Tigers are a very well-run team but signing Hernandez seems like a bad idea. He'll be 33 if February, and that's giving him the benefit of the doubt. While he is durable, Livan is a career National Leaguer who posted a 1.14 K/BB ratio last year. You have to figure at minimum he'd want three years and $21MM. The Tigers can afford it, but that doesn't mean it's wise. The Tigers hope to re-sign Kenny Rogers. Failing that, they've got Hernandez, Carlos Silva, and Dontrelle Willis on the radar. showad();

Nats Like Andruw, Livan, Jennings, Colon, Glavine
2007-11-07 03:24:00 UPDATE, EVENING OF 11-6-07: MLB.com's Bill Ladson has some more good Nationals information. His source says that both Livan Hernandez and Tom Glavine are interested in the club, but they only have the budget for one of them. Glavine makes more sense. Ladson also mentions that Bowden has his eye on Rocco Baldelli, and idea I like. I can't really think of a great match for a trade though. FROM MORNING OF 11-6-07: According to the Washington Post, Nationals president Stan Kasten recently met with Andruw Jones at the center fielder's home in Atlanta. Kasten, of course, was formerly president of the Braves. Kasten's contact with Jones is described as "extremely preliminary." That makes sense, since technically the two parties are not allowed to talk dollars and cents. But come on - it's not like Andruw's house is bugged by MLB. The Nationals' open-minded pledge has already led them to contact Torii Hunte...

Livan Hernandez Hopes To Pitch With El Duque
2007-08-31 23:32:00 Livan Hernandez, half-brother of Orlando, were all set to pitch together as Expos in 2003 until El Duque succumbed to a shoulder injury. Livan, a free-agent-to-be, mentioned recently that he still aims to pitch with his half-brother. El Duque is signed through 2008 as a Met; could they make room for Livan in next year's rotation? Duque, Oliver Perez, and John Maine are locked in. Tom Glavine's status is in question; Livan could conceivably fill Glavine's rotation spot. If Glavine reaches 200 innings this year, he'll have a $13MM player option for '08. It might be hard to turn that down. The market is weak enough where a past-his-prime innings eater like Livan Hernandez might be a hot commodity. If he's looking for a 3/36 type deal, the Mets would probably pass.

Defending Barry Bonds for Idiots
2007-08-07 03:16:00 Everyone at this point must be a little tired of hearing about Bonds chasing Mays, chasing Ruth, chasing Aaron, and now finally hitting number 755. Nonetheless, since the feat occurred just this weekend, I suppose we can entertain a few more opinions, right? There are certainly a lot of players who refuse to credit Bonds' accomplishments. Since I'm on their side, I won't bother posting their opinions, but rather, I'll post the silly ones?the ones who try to invent some sort of twisted logic to allow them to support Bonds. First up, Andruw Jones:For Andruw Jones, all the talk about Barry Bonds and drug use isn't an issue. "It doesn't matter," the Atlanta Braves star said Sunday. "There's a lot of people that take steroids, and they don't hit 755 home runs."We've all probably heard this argument a few times, and its logic never ceases to escape me. We're talking about Bonds passing Hank Aaron here, so is it relevant that "a lot of people take steroids?" I'm pretty sure Han...
Livan Hernandez Wants To Be The Next Julio Franco
2007-07-30 22:14:00 Livan Hernandez’s ever expanding waistline will not be leaving major league baseball anytime soon. Hernandez says he would like to play 10 more years and break Luis Tiant’s major league record for wins by a Cuban pitcher. Right now Hernandez has 129 victories, 100 fewer than Tiant. In 10 years Hernandez will be 42, but like his brother El Duque, he may be a little bit older than he claims to be. That means Hernandez could still be pitching well into his early to mid-forties before he finally hangs up his cleats. It will be just like he’s Roger Clemens, only he’ll show up to all his teams’ games.
