life between lives
2009-11-03 19:43:00
Having had far too many experiences of life continuing after death, I am an unshakeable believer. What I have less time for are the army of ?mediums with messages?. I used to see so many about all sorts of standard issue topics. God knows why I went back to see two or three of them ...

Low-Lives or Elegant Beauties?....The Organic Splendor of Lichen, Revisited
2009-08-30 17:12:00
Branching with the grace of trees; sparkling with the light of stars; spreading with the hope of life; imbued with the energy of Creation; pastel-colored like fairies and rainbows. What am I talking about? LICHEN, of course!Welcome to my "Garden of Earthy Delights!" Here are some recent macro shots of majestic trees whose bark presents a cornucopia of smaller lifeforms. They represent a microcosm of organic form that rivals the beauty of any flower garden. Form, color, infinite configurations: the peaceful symbiosis of bark, moss, insects, and lichen defy the hungry eye to ignore them. At first glance you might feel these shots are redundant, but if you look closely, you'll see a great variety of abstract compositions!I LOVE photographing lichen. I think that some of my Abstract Expressionist paintings reflect my fascination with the kind of bursting forth of life force reflected in the orderly disorder of lichen! If these images awaken your sense of wonder and you'd like to ...

Jackson Browne - Lives in the Balance
2009-08-22 19:11:00
Jackson Browne - Lives in the Balance I've been waiting for something to happen For a week or a month or a year With the blood in the ink of the headlines And the sound of the crowd in my ear You might ask what it takes to remember When you know that you've seen it before Where a government lies to a people And a country is drifting to war And there's a shadow on the faces Of the men who send the guns To the wars that are fought in places Where their business interest runs On the radio talk shows and the t.v. You hear one thing again and again How the u.s.a. stands for freedom And we come to the aid of a friend But who are the ones that we call our friends-- These governments killing their own? Or the people who finally can't take any more And they pick up a gun or a brick or a stone There are lives in the balance There are people under fire There are children at the cannons And there is blood on the wire There's a shadow on the faces Of the men who fan the flames Of the w...

A Look At Rural VAS Services - Set To Change Lives
2009-06-22 08:24:00
The other day I was discussing “Rural VAS business in India” with couple of my friends, and one of my friend argued that information about the right prices is always available with the farmers and making market price information available on mobile is little if not of no value addition to the farmer. Another friend of mine Ashok, An IIT KGP graduate pointed out that he used to go sell vegetables in Jaipur city and he never knew what the correct price was, there it was one of the problem’s Rural VAS is trying to solve, making information easily accessible to farmer because information put’s him in a power position  and helps him get more profit for all the hard work he has put into. Innovations in Rural VAS: It is quite amusing to see how mobile phone has already changed and still continues to change the lives in third world countries for better,be it Grameen phone in Bangladesh providing employment and connectivity to millions of Individuals in that countr...

The CD lives again, but let history not repeat itself !
2009-06-18 09:47:00
29 May 2009 was a red-letter day in the Conference on Disarmament. The Conference has secured a new lease of life. Its future must be informed by its past.Just over 30 years ago, the UN General Assembly held a special session devoted to disarmament. It saw the need for a ?single multilateral disarmament negotiating forum of limited size taking decisions on the basis of consensus?, i.e., without voting. This Geneva-based body became the Conference on Disarmament (CD) comprised now of 65 states.Important treaties emerged from the CD, culminating in the Comprehensive Test Ban agreement in 1996. Since then, the CD has failed to agree ? with one exception ? even on a mandate to negotiate a treaty, let alone a treaty itself. Meanwhile several disarmament treaties have emerged from processes other than the CD. Conventions banning anti-personnel landmines and cluster munitions were agreed in negotiations that were purposely conducted by like-minded states outside of another consensus-observ...
On the Private Lives of Public Figures
2009-06-16 00:14:00
I just learned that quite recently a detail of the private life of a prominent gay person (very likely not a Republican) was made public.  I had always thought it was primarily for political reasons that such things were exposed.  But, I guess people’s prurient obsessions transcend politics. It does seem that in this internet age ...

The Cubs Think Signatures Are More Valuable Than Little Kids' Lives. (Take
2009-05-08 13:27:00
I got the answer from the Chicago Cubs yesterday. Remember, I wanted the Cubs to take a book -- which I'd give them free of charge -- and have some baseball players sign it - -and then give it back to me, at which point I'd auction it off and give the money to Mateo and McHale Shaw to help cover their medical bills.Total cost to the Cubs for that effort? Some ink and a few seconds' of time. The Chicago Cubs are a sports team valued at $448,000,000 dollars, and a team which will pay their players more than $130,500,000 this year alone. So let's see what the Cubs had to say about having a bunch of millionaires sign a book:I suppose I could have offered to send them the pen, too? And maybe driven down there to move the players' arms as they signed, so that there was no cost? Also, do you get the feeling that Mr. Anonymous Community Affairs Department Writer didn't read my letter?UPDATE: When I went to Digg this post, I found this link as one of the similar ones. So the Cubs...

This is especially true for malaria and dengue fever, now claiming 5 million and 50 million new victims a year respectively.

Duke University bioengineers have created the first "brain helmet" capable of detecting a stroke in a matter of minutes, compared to the four hours it takes to detect from a traditional MRI or CT study. Particularly for the most common types of strokes, the brain helmet's rapid diagnosis could make the difference between recovery and disability, or even life and death.

Media: The Most Dominant Force in Children?s Lives
2009-01-15 18:39:00
Several decades back, Dr. David Hamburg, an astute psychiatrist, gave a talk on the new health problems that our nation was starting to face. In contrast to the problems that earlier generations had to deal with (such as infectious epidemics), he pointed out that the new health problems were the result of ?having too much??too much food, too much alcohol, too much stimulation.
