2008-05-23 16:26:00 Some anonymous donor just cut a check for $20 million dollars and saved St. Brigid's Church from being destroyed to make way for more plastic bullshit condos or another NYU dorm in the East Village!The dioscese headed up by Edward Cardinal Egan didn't do much to help. The 160 year old building hit his shitlist in 2001 due to rising costs, falling attendance, and crumbling conditions. The archdiocese argued it was too dilapidated to save. Church supporters led by attorney Marisa Marinelli were able to stave off demolition with a series of (expensive) legal challenges.So as usually happens where larger institutions fail to help humanity, the people succeeded!It makes me wonder if some real estate developers didn't put a little something extra in the collection plate to keep His Excellency in line...The church is over on Ave B and was slated for demolition even after a huge grassroots efforts by the community and historic preservationists to stop the wrecking ball.
