Ride on the London Underground - ?Thrilling?
2008-02-06 00:00:00
London Underground passengers had a surprising ride recently when a group of people rose from their seats to perform the dance to Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Had they read the recent story about pole dancers on the New York Subway? London Underground VIP
2007-12-24 09:50:00
As far as I have figured out, London Underground staff refer to blind people as ‘VIP’s - which stands for ‘Visually Impaired Person’. I call that Political Correctness gone good. I was on a tube carriage earlier in the week while a VIP was boarding the train. A staff member helped him board, and then presumably ...

Voice of London Underground sacked
2007-11-26 17:35:00
Okay I've just read about this today and I just have to say that officers at the British Underground are just a bunch of "gits" and "prats" with no sense of humor at all. They fired the official announcer for the London Tube System just because she posted some spoof messages ON HER WEBSITE!!When I was reading through the news article, I thought that she actually said it over the loudspeaker but I went over the article again and saw that she just posted it on her website for fun. Some of the spoof messages she posted that were in the original London Underground voice were: "We would like to remind our American tourist friends that you are almost certainly talking too loudly."* "Would the passenger in the red shirt pretending to read the paper but who is actually staring at that woman's chest please stop. You are not fooling anyone, you filthy pervert."* "Would passengers filling in answers on their Sudokus please accept that they are just crosswords for the unimaginative and are n...

RMT union stops three-day strike on London Underground following last night
2007-09-05 11:53:00
The Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers' Union (RMT) has called a halt to a three-day strike on the London Underground rail network, following marathon peace talks last night. The industrial action involving 2,300 RMT workers was suspended after 30 hours, bringing respite to London's underground network, as nine of its 12 lines had been affected. Rail contractor Metronet went into administration in July after running out of funds. Members of RMT voted to strike after the union failed to get "unequivocal guarantees" over jobs and pension rights from the administrator. A second 72-hour strike is still scheduled to start at the same time next Monday, 10 September however, further talks are scheduled for Friday to prevent any further industrial action. "We are pleased the RMT has suspended its strike action," Transport for London said in an e-mailed statement. Prime minister Gordon Brown earlier called the strike "wholly unjustified" and urged strikers to get back to work....

London Underground maintenance staff to hold two three-day strikes in Septe
2007-08-24 16:58:00
Tube maintenance staff will go on two three-day strikes this September, after unwelcome proposals for redundancies and outsourcing look set to steam ahead. Members of the Unite union working for failed privateer Metronet will go on strike from 6pm on Monday 3 September until 5:59pm on Thursday 6 September. The second stoppage will occur between 6pm on Monday 10 September and 5:59pm on Thursday 13 September. Industrial action from Metronet staff, voted for overwhelmingly by members of Unite, the RMT and the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association, will have a massive cumulative impact on Tube services, as the firm operates nine of the 12 London Underground lines. Yet the administrator is still set to slash jobs and outsource up to a thousand more to rail transit company Bombardier. Unite assistant general secretary Jennie Bremner said: "The administrator seems to be intent on continuing Metronet's failed policies, which led to the company being taking into administration in...

Cities in Flight: the London Underground overground
2007-06-12 15:17:00
It appears that Transport for London have been commissioning artwork. Thin Cities commemorates 100 years of the Piccadilly Line, which connects Heathrow in the southwest to the suburbs in the northeast. A series of pieces were produced, most of which are pretty insipid. More interesting is the Station of the Future competition TfL ran, which ...
London Underground maintenance contractor Metronet Rail to axe up to 290 fu
2007-05-24 13:40:00
Metronet Rail will axe up to 290 full-time administrative and middle management positions as part of a streamlining exercise. The firm responsible for the renewal of two-thirds of the London Underground, Metronet is seeking a review of its public private partnership (PPP) contract as a result of increasing overspending, reported to be more than £1bn. Metronet said it would reduce the number of management levels between the senior management of the business and the shop floor. Andrew Lezala, chief executive at Metronet said: ?While I have already introduced significant change within Metronet, it has been necessary for us to conduct a further review to ensure that we have the right number of people in place - doing the right jobs in our business.? Reacting to the announcement, transport union RMT said workers would not pay the price for Metronet?s failures. Bob Crow, general secretary of RMT, said: ?It is Metronet that needs to be sacked, not our members. Metronet?s death...
