2007-11-25 05:52:00 The Eagles release a new album “Long Road Out of Eden”. Yes I know, anyone born after 1982 is saying “Eagles who?”. But stay with me here. Guess who the band released thru? Atlantic Records? Sony? MCA? WalMart? Yo, hold the fort — WalMart? Yep WalMart. The Eagles are self publishing and releasing primarily thru WalMart. No major label for this CD. No middleman taking 80% of the revenue. This deal has an interesting angle as far as distribution. WalMart is the world’s largest retailer as a consequence they are the single largest source of shelf sales. I always considered that the Suits in the music biz would just slowly wither as internet sales choke off their income streams. Now I see the possibility of the Suits losing their income streams like a log rolling over a waterfall. Major name bands might consider after their contracts expire going the Eagles route. Eagles' Long Road Out Of Eden "Appears" to Be a Huge Seller
2007-11-01 04:34:00 There's a problem in the new era of music merchandising. Stores that hold exclusives with bands sometimes don't want anyone to know how many units they've moved.Such is the case with Wal-Mart and this week's release of the first Eagles album in 28 years. While a final decision has not been made, the company is yet to report any first day sales on the album and has, in the past, refrained from doing so (i.e. Garth Brook's exclusives).The album would only be eligible to appear on the Billboard Top Comprehensive Albums Chart as only product that is generally available can appear on the main chart, the Top 200.So far, nothing has been announced and Wal-Mart has until the end of the week to make the decision on releasing the sales figures. According to ABC News Radio, Wal-Mart has told them that "Eden posted the best first-day total "by far" for that chain, which includes Sam's Club stores. The source did not reveal that total, but said it exceeded projections by 50%."
