Audibles From the Long Snapper
2009-10-20 05:23:00
There's a new debate in town regarding whether the Bears are a running or throwing team.  Well, they can throw it really well and they can't run it at all.  So what am I missing?  Where's the debate?  I've heard the argument for balance but it just doesn't hold water.  If you can move the ball, you can move the ball.  How you do it doesn't matter.  For those who suggest we'll need to run the ball in December, fine.  But it's not December.  So let's win some games in the meantime.I find this headline funny: "Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith won't hit panic button".  Making changes to your starting roster should not be considered hitting the panic button.  Changing...
Wolves Drop Two in Long Weekend of losses.
2009-10-18 23:21:00
Friday night the Chicago Wolves lost in Rockford to the IceHogs in a 4:1 physical contest. Although the Wolves seemed to keep up with the always hard hitting Hogs they never played at the same level or intensity as their closest rival. It was to be the start of a long weekend.Rockfords's Brian Connley and Mark Cullen box up Nathan Oystrick of the  Chicago Wolves during Friday nights physical play....
Audibles From the Long Snapper
2009-10-13 08:52:00
Brad Biggs' gives his definition of a "number one receiver" in this abbreviated mailbag column over at the Sun-Times.  Believe it or not, I actual got texts from people claiming we should have traded for Brandon Marshall (6:11 ET Sunday) and Braylon Edwards (11:01 ET Monday).  This coming off a weekend where media and fans seem to be pining for the quarterbacks and running backs of yesteryear.  Why?  Because nobody in Chicago seems to notice that our defense gives up third-and-longers faster than the French gave up France to the Nazis while our offense WILL carry us into the playoffs. Matty Ice has only been sacked twice in four game this season.  That's the same number of times as Peyton Manning.  Goal number...

Nobel Peace Prize To Obama. India?s Past Candidate Sathya Sai Baba Long-for
2009-10-09 23:38:00
The Nobel Institute has just awarded US President Barach Obama the Nobel Peace Prize. News of the Obama receipt of the Prize stirs memories of those involved in submissions contra Sathya Sai Baba to the Nobel Institute a decade ago. They cannot but be reminded of the resounding failure of Sathya Sai Baba-disposed forces within the Indian government to nominate the guru for this same prize. Well-remembered is all the excitement generated among devotees when news that his name was being put forward was announced in Sai Centers around the world. The strange notion of quite how tasteful it was that 'God' should receive such an earth-bound award was remote from their consideration. He and his officials badly misrepresented the status of Dr Michael Nobel, a major player in WorldSpace International Satellite Radio Service, which broadcasts Sathya Sai Baba propaganda to many countries in the world.
Trip Idea: A Long Weekend in Denver
2009-10-09 19:45:00
Scott Ingram Photography via Flickr Did you know that the flight from Chicago to Denver is only 2.5 hours long? On the way back, it's closer 2 hours flat, making it an easy jaunt for a long weekend. Southwest, United, and Frontier operate dozens of low-cost flights between the two cities each day, with prices ranging from $180 to $250 per person. Drinking and dining is relatively cheap and mid-priced hotels average $130 per night so it's a trip you can pull off on even a smaller budget. If you only have the weekend, concentrate your time in just Denver or Boulder. If you can stretch your vactation to 3 or 4 days, it's worth getting out of the city to explore....

US looking to deploy long-endurance hybrid airship over Afghanistan

The connection between two long sentences or paragraphs sometimes requires
2009-09-22 13:06:00
Diversity increases the chances of interesting material and just as it works with evolution so does it apply to communication. The interspersing of long statements with those of shorter length in a narrative keep it interesting and serve to give it a seamless continuity. The audience is therefore able to gain the facts being related in the narrative as well as develop some emphatic feel for the characters. With the transition of the shorter sentences, the audience is able to go back to their own resources and try judge for themselves the end to which the narrative is pointing. Along the way however, they may be proved farther away from the truth but in one way or the other they become an active part of the narrative. The longer statements with all their facts seem to pose a question to the audience on what they think will happen in the next stages of the story. With the transition, the short statements serve to relieve some of this tension and therefore throw the audience off-guard ...
Well, That Didn't Take Long!
2009-09-21 02:09:00
I received R.'s first phone call home from the teacher. Already. Yup, I knew the day would come, I just didn't expect it to be so soon.R., though very feisty, can also be quite the scaredy cat. She can be clingy with me when faced with a new situation or with new people. Once she sees that she is safe, she warms up quite quickly. But until the thaw has begun? She wants no part of anything.A prime example was Kindergarten orientation. She cried. She clung. She refused to go to school. When the children lined up with their new teacher to be taken on a tour, she begged for me to go. I walked along with her to her classroom and stopped at the door. She went right in and that was that. She came back skipping and waving. She continued going to school every day with a smile on her face. Then on Thursday, R. got the rug pulled out from underneath her tiny body. The teacher's voicemail explained that a new student had joined their class and R. became extremely upset. My brow furrowed.Mrs. C....

Tiny Bit Me: The Long and Short of URL Shorteners
2009-09-09 10:25:00
A long long time ago, a friend of mine asked me how Twitter plans to make money, he was pursuing a similar idea and even then it wasn’t completely difficult to make your own Twitter clone. Many months have passed since and some one asked me why are there so many URL shorteners. For lack of better wisdom he decided that there is lots of money in it and therefore so many players. That was just his view though and not very credible, however the larger more wiser online world hold two sets of opinions – that URL shorteners are bad and the other that they are useful. The Short URL Market At last count I knew of 18 URL shorteners, and there could definitely be more, another buddy of mine made one last week just for the kicks. That’s a very competitive market we are looking at for a product that not many have scripted a scalable business model yet. TinyURL and Bit.ly hold the largest share of this market followed closely by Cli.gs, at least as per US traffic data which i...

The Long, Slow Near-Death of the American Streetcar
2009-09-09 07:00:00
With the end of World War II, America underwent an automobile-driven explosion of sprawling suburbs. This demographic development continued during the 1950s and 1960s, and the streetcar industry gradually lost the support it needed to continue operations. Many government agencies did little to

They are meant for private devotion. It is believed that the diptych of St Jerome and the Virgin was used as a visual aid by a learned monk in the monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence, where Lorenzo also lived and for which he made many works of art. The devotional theme of the Madonna of Humility ("Madonna dell'Umiltà") arose in the late 13th century, spreading across Italy during the next century and becoming particularly popular in cities such as Siena. From Italy it spread to other countries including Spain, where it was widely accep...
How long will DirecTV keep Versus in the penalty box?
2009-09-08 15:29:00
So when exactly is it time to start getting worried?  It has now been a week since DirecTV dropped Versus as a channel option to all customers.  The satellite provider is in a dispute with Comcast - their main rival and owner of the Versus cable network. DirecTV argues that it's about money and fairness.  Comcast is concerned that DirecTV will move Versus into another a tier of channel offerings therefore reducing the overall viewers of the fledgling sports channel.  I could care less who's right or wrong.  I just want access to hockey games. DirecTV has approximately 18 million subscribers.  14 million of their customers subscribe to the Total Choice Xtra package which, until last week, included Versus. ...

Facebook, So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Good-bye!
2009-09-05 14:03:00
Do you hear those 'Sound of Music' lyrics emanating from  the hallowed halls of Socialgraphica sending out our early good-byes to Facebook? The NY Times might be right when it talks about its imminent demise. In an article titled "Facebook Exodus" they refer to things falling apart when the center cannot hold the weight. Is Facebook about to implode at the hands of its own critical mass?
A Long Wait in the Emergency Room
2009-09-04 02:46:00
Ever gone to the emergency room? What do you notice?     You immediately see the crowded waiting room and you know you're in for a long wait. As a matter of fact, you'll wait an average of 222 minutes or 3.7 hours before being seen by a doctor. Even though the Cubs have spring training in Arizona, be glad you don't live there. Their average wait times are 297.3 minutes or 5 hours. However, if you move to Iowa, you'll only wait a little more than 2 hours....

Long time since I post here.
2009-08-28 20:25:00
Sorry for the long wait, folks. Lately I been enjoying working out on my punching bags ever since I ordered a set of them from online. It took me a long time to do this because there were special styles of punching bags I want to buy at an affordable price and had to spent a lot of time looking for them online to buy with my paypal account. My favorite bags to punch are the UFC MMA training bags. Especially the 100 lb training bag with a very wide diameter and lots of room for me to punch the bag to my hearts content. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get the bag, yet. All I could afford is a 70 lb UFC training bag which I ordered from KarateSupply.com for $119.99 plus free shipping. Now that's a great deal in comparison with other sites that sells such bags for higher price plus shipping and handling charges. I also bought an Everlast 2-station punching bag stand, a large Everlast speed bag, and a pair of MMA gloves for me to wear when I work out on my bags even though it's not th...
Call up Phillipines Long Distance (PHI)
2009-08-21 14:00:00
International investing expert Yiannis Mostrous suggests that investors ring up Philippine Long Distance Telephone (NYSE: PHI). Here's the latest from The Silk Road Investor."Philippine Long Distance is the dominant provider long-distance and cellular services in the Philippines."Recently its wireless subsidiary, Smart, launched an aggressive unlimited call promotion to compete with similar offers from other providers. The decline in price for voice services could lead to higher voice usage and bolster revenues."Note that short messaging service (SMS) is far more popular in the Philippines; subscribers send about 600 SMS texts per month but use just 10 minutes of voice per month."The launch of this new promotion is Smart's first significant attempt to gain market share in the under-penetrated voice market. "With a penetration rate of 70%, cellular operators are increasingly targeting the lower-income segment while looking for the new r...

In the past decade, there has been a spate of books with titles of the year, their authors believe, was seminal in national or world history.  Perhaps, their attention to the significance of dates is in response to the trend in the 1970s to de-emphasize dates in studying the events of the past.  On book, ...

So long, Rahm. Adios, Axelrod.
2009-08-16 22:49:00
Now that the polls are showing that the America public is jumping ship on President Barack Axelrod and EmanuelObama's health care fantasia, he'll be looking around for someone to blame. And blame shall be placed.Consider: By jamming every possible thought and every proposal that every reformer has ever had into a single bill, Obama has aggregated every possible opponent into a single place. If he had, instead, segmented the bill into more manageable packages, he would have split the opposition into, likewise, smaller segments. Now, he has brought every opponent of every provision into a single place, where they all have one thing in common: defeat  the legislation. It was truly awful political strategy. One strains to figure out why...

The Long Hot Summer
2009-08-11 04:19:00
It's been one of those summers where it passes by so fast, you don't even realize what's happening right before your eyes. My first week of August can literally be chalked up as wasted time, as most of my waking hours were spent devising new ways to stay cool. I can't recall a summer where I endured such hot temperatures when relief (A/C) was not just around the corner. The rest of my time has been consumed by the daunting task of being a first-time home buyer. Even though I don't have a home yet, most of my summer has been spent searching for a better place to call home. This is one of those phases in my life where complex life decisions seem to be taking precedent over my creative endeavors. However, since my girlfriend and I are closing in on making a decision on buying a new home, I hope to be able to post more often in the near future. Since most of the music I have been listening to in my car has turned into a Plain Brown Wrappers post anyway, I have decided to kill off ...

How long should your home search take?
2009-08-01 21:28:00
I've asked a number of Realtors this question, and checked out a number of websites that make suggestions, but each seems to have a different timeline or . Here's some tips I have: 1. Don't see too much in one day. Everyone's memory and tolerance is different, but I tend to forget the difference between homes after looking at more than six. Or I find myself unable to fairly compare the first and last properties. 2. Know some of what you want going in. If you don't, you'll waste time seeing 20-30 properties that you know you don't want. You can't know everything right at the start, but if you at least know what your dealbreakers are, you can avoid...
Unacceptable harm: Nearing the end of a long run ?
2009-07-30 13:37:00
As many of this blog?s readers know, I?ve been researching and writing a history of international efforts to address the humanitarian impacts of cluster munitions as part of a project commencing at UNIDIR in March 2008 funded by the Government of Norway.I?m pleased to say that the total book manuscript of Unacceptable Harm: A history of how the treaty banning cluster munitions was won is now done, and is in the hands of UNIDIR?s copy editor.Writing a manuscript of 140,000 or more words is not something I?ve done before, and as I mentioned in April (as I was plodding along the long, uphill straight of drafting the book?s eleven chapters), running it can be a bit of a difficult, lonely business:?It?s quite tricky psychologically to keep myself properly motivated and I, for one, tend to get depressed easily about my lack of pace, especially as deadlines begin to loom. All of this, of course, against the backdrop of story of how cluster bombs were banned that?s complicated, fascinating...
QuESt releases long-awaited mixtape 'Broken Headphones'

Feature And RTOS, The Phones India Will Still Need For Long
2009-07-28 08:00:00
Smartphone sales growth was very impressive in last year and in the first quarter of 2009 too, while the total mobile phone sales dropped around 8.6% globally Smartphone sales surpassed 36.4 million units, a 12.6% increase from the same period last year, Gartner reports. Now increasingly more number of ODM’s and OEM’s are eyeing the smartphone businesses and turning to the smartphone OS’es like Symbian, Android and Moblin, besides Apple’s MAC which is not licensable by other’s. What makes this market all the more interesting is the competition between device manufacturers slowly turning into a war between opensource Mobile OS‘es. Rightly pointed out by Ben Hookway on Visionmobile, amid all this adrenaline rush created by Google, Intel and Nokia, nobody talks about the other 85% of the market contributed by feature and RTOS phones. If you don’t know already- RTOS is an abbreviation for Real Time Operating system, which is a multitasking oper...
