Manny Comes To Fenway In 2010
2009-09-16 19:33:00
Major League Baseball released the 2010 schedule on Tuesday and while the Boston Red Sox will open and close with the New York Yankees, one weekend of dates is what stands out. And that’s Friday, June 18 to Sunday, June 20. Why does it stand out? When Manny Ramirez went to the Los Angeles Dodgers, many Red ...
That?s A Lot of Benjamins
2008-10-24 19:35:00
Or should I say that’s a lot of Ramirez’s. According to the New York Post, the Los Angeles Dodgers have offered Manny Ramirez a 2-year $60 million dollar contract. That offer isn’t likely to get the job done though as I’m sure Manny and his agent, Scott Boras, will be looking for at least 4-year deal ...
Dennis Eckersley Is Once Again The Sacrificial Lamb

During the EJ’s Neat-O Stat of the Night portion of the TBS broadcast after the ALCS Game 4 massacre, Dennis Eckersley was once again the sacrificial lamb as he was picked him on yet again, this time for it being the 20th anniversary (October 15, 1988) of Kirk Gibson hitting the memorable home run off ...
Monday Morning Links and Other Thoughts
2008-09-08 15:54:00
It?s so nice to have football back! To see the Steelers have an impressive season debut in defeating Houston. To know that there are games on for approximately 10 hours from Sunday early afternoon to Sunday night. To walk around the grocery store on a Sunday and see people wearing their football jerseys. (Although why was one guy wearing an A.J. Hawk Packers? jersey when the team doesn?t play until Monday?) To follow your fantasy football teams and hope that Terrell Owens can score big points while his quarterback Tony Romo does not (or worse to root for Reggie Bush for one league and against him in another). Welcome back professional football!Have you watched any football highlights from yesterday? If so, you may have noticed every announcer gushing over Brett Favre?s touchdown pass where he threw a terrible ball on a fourth down that somehow manager to find an open receiver. It?s only a matter of time (probably next week) when that same pass is intercepted.On to the links?...
Rumors: Vidro, Bedard, Ibanez +
2008-07-15 14:42:00
A lot of us thought it absurd that Richie Sexson was let go before the even more useless Jose Vidro, but it seems order is slowly returning to the universe.  This from Prospect Insider’s sidebar: There are some rumors starting to swirl around the team as they left Kaufmann Stadium today that designated hitter Jose Vidro’s ...
Game Report: Chicago Cubs vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
2008-06-09 18:30:00
In a game that started with some early thunder, the fireworks were put out relatively early. The major league leading Chicago Cubs handled the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1, behind 6 1/3 strong innings from veteran starter Jason Marquis. With the Dodgers already training 1-0 in the bottom of the first, LA lead-off man Juan Pierre singled. ...
Hu?s RBI single off Trevor Hoffman gives Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 win over S
2008-04-07 03:45:00
Trevor Hoffman’s sluggish start this season is beginning to look a lot like the end of last year. Hoffman was charged with his second loss in his last three games, allowing Chin-lung Hu’s tiebreaking RBI single in the ninth inning of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday. Read the ...
Scouting Report: Chad Billingsley, RHP, Los Angeles Dodgers
2008-04-04 09:30:00
I’ve always been very interested in Major League scouting. I’m not a scout myself, but I thought I’d take a stab at learning the art this season. So for the rest of the season, I’m going to cover some hitters and pitchers who I feel are primed for big seasons and cover what ...
Los Angeles Dodgers coach Larry Bowa ejected (AP)
2008-04-02 07:07:00
Dodgers third base coach Larry Bowa was ejected in the sixth inning of Tuesday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants, apparently for arguing after he was told to stay within the boundaries of the coaching box. The Dodgers had two on and two outs in a scoreless game when third base umpire Larry Montague ...

Hello, Joe. So long, Barry. Joe Torre makes his managerial debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the San Francisco Giants play their first game without Barry Bonds on the roster since 1992 when the longtime rivals meet Monday to open the season. The 67-year-old Torre managed the Yankees to 12 straight postseason appearances including ...
Mark Sweeney and Jeff Kent lead Los Angeles Dodgers to 3-1 win over Boston
2008-03-29 07:32:00
Mark Sweeney doubled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Boston Red Sox 3-1 Friday night in the opener of a three-game series that will include a nostalgic evening at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum. Sweeney doubled off Lincoln Holdzkom to score Andre Ethier, who had drawn a ...

James Loney not taking anything for granted with Los Angeles Dodgers (AP)
2008-02-24 00:17:00
James Loney thought he earned a spot with the Los Angeles Dodgers during spring training last year. He ended up starting the season at Triple-A Las Vegas. He’s got more job security this year but still isn’t taking anything for granted. “I try to come into every spring training trying to earn a spot, and ...

Baseball Prospectus' Top 11 Los Angeles Dodgers Prospects
2008-02-01 19:09:00
Baseball Prospectus has posted its Top 11 Los Angeles Dodgers Prospects.  I'm sure raygu has seen them as he specifically asked about them in BP's chat yesterday, but, in case he did, I'll post them. I am surprised about a couple players.  Chin-Lung Hu as a five-star prospect and Scott Elbert as a four-star one.  Neither player is getting much hype this off-season - Elbert because he had shoulder surgery (understandable) and Hu for some reason I cannot figure. As a fantasy player, Elbert means very little, but Hu is ready to step-in at SS once the season ends and is a good sleeper in the event Furcal is injured this season. Five-Star Prospects Clayton Kershaw, LHP Andy LaRoche, 3B Chin-Lung Hu, SS Four-Star Prospects 4. Scott Elbert, LHP Three-Star Prospects James McDonald, RHP Josh Bell, 3B Chris Withrow, RHP Jonathan Meloan, RHP Ivan DeJesus, SS Blake Dewitt, 3B James Adkins, RHP

Rangers Rumors: Guardado, Cameron, Hamilton
2007-12-21 22:16:00
MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has all the latest hot stove buzz around the Rangers. The Rangers are nearing a deal with Eddie Guardado.  Everyday Eddie might be a dark horse to close, if he can flash his late season form again.  The Reds decided in October that he was not worth $3.5MM, and declined his option.  Guardado is 37. The Rangers hope to add some kind of veteran starter.  Bartolo Colon and Jason Jennings are still options, but Mark Prior and Freddy Garcia pretty much are not.  Sullivan names Mike Maroth, Mark Hendrickson, and Josh Towers as pitchers of interest. Mike Cameron could be an option for center field if he'll take a one-year deal.  A multiyear demand would also take the Rangers out of the running for Corey Patterson. Sullivan notes that the Reds want Edinson Volzquez for Josh Hamilton, a possibility he first mentioned three weeks ago.  Jamey Newberg doesn't think Volquez would cut it.  Other trade options could include Andre Et...
Los Angeles Dodgers 2008 Top Ten Prospects
2007-12-18 11:46:00
The Dodgers have been spending money this off-season faster than a drunken sailor with a goal of sneaking by in the strong National League West. The problem now is they have too many outfielders.   1) Clayton Kershaw, 20, LHP, first round, 2006 Kershaw played varsity baseball on his Texas High
Reds Still Searching For A Starter
2007-12-17 05:20:00
John Fay writes of the Reds' continued search for a starting pitcher.  That's Wayne Krivsky's focus; his main limitation is that Jay Bruce is untouchable. The Reds couldn't get Dan Haren because they wouldn't give up young starter Johnny Cueto.  The focus remains on Erik Bedard; the Reds seem willing to offer Homer Bailey as a starting point.  Fay indicates that the Dodgers lead for Bedard, which is odd given their current six-deep rotation. I have a feeling the hot stove is going to turn to Joe Blanton now.  The Reds may be in the thick of it, especially if they'd give up Bailey for him.  What do you think, would that be a wise move? showad();
Kuroda Remains Undecided
2007-12-15 04:50:00
After all the ruckus about Hiroki Kuroda earlier this week, his agent said today that he still has not reached a decision.  The decision is "very close," and may come by the end of the weekend.  The Mariners, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Royals have offers out. No word yet on whether the D'Backs will pull their offer after snagging Dan Haren.  I know they're going with the three-year payroll plan, so they can probably still fit Kuroda in. showad();
Dodgers In Lead For Hiroki Kuroda?
2007-12-12 20:41:00
UPDATE, 12-12-07 at 1:40pm: Jerry Crasnick checks in, noting that Kuroda is visiting his California-based agent.  They'll go over the four offers they have in hand. UPDATE, 12-12-07 at 8:56am: If the Diamondbacks are out of the running for Kuroda, they haven't been informed of it.  Tony Jackson of the L.A. Daily News wrote early today that Kuroda was on a flight to L.A. - either indicating he is doing his recruiting tour or he signed with the Dodgers.  Jackson believes the latter is the case. UPDATE, 12-12-07 at 8:21am: The Kyodo News, found via RotoWorld, reports that Kuroda has chosen the Dodgers and he informed his former team on Tuesday night.  The signing could be announced today. UPDATE, 12-11-07 at 11:18pm: Geoff Baker tells us all to calm down.  Kuroda hasn't made his decision yet, though the Dodgers and Mariners remain the frontrunners.  Baker believes it might take several days to reach a conclusion. Mariners Leading For Kuroda?
2007-12-11 15:46:00
John Hickey has an update on Hiroki Kuroda this morning.  It seems the Mariners, Dodgers, and Diamondbacks are competing for his services.  Kuroda only wants a three-year deal, giving himself a chance to go back to Japan for the 2011 season if he chooses.  According to Hickey, "Kuroda's final decision will be between the Dodgers and the Mariners." Mariners: Hickey thinks they're in the lead with a three-year offer in the $33-36MM range.  The rumors of a four-year offer were false. Dodgers: They're at 3/30 and are considered the Mariners' biggest competition. Diamondbacks: Hickey says they're also close to 3/30 but on the fringes, which might imply his source was not aware of their recently improved offer. It seems Kuroda will make a decision within a week or so.  Maybe by then the starting pitching market will start moving. showad();
Phillies, Dodgers Not Interested In Inge
2007-12-07 17:26:00
According to Jayson Stark yesterday, the Tigers are indeed shopping ousted 29 year-old third baseman Brandon Inge.  He says the Dodgers and Phillies have already said no.  My guess at the rationale: the Dodgers will go internal and are less concerned with the position, and the Phils want a good hitter at the position. Inge seemingly peaked in '06, hitting 27 HRs with fine defense.  That earned him a four-year, $24MM extension.  He's got three years and $19.1MM left.  His stock is down after posting a .688 OPS last year.  Inge was a catcher as recently as 2004, so maybe he can don the tools of ignorance once again.  There, his offense wouldn't look nearly as poor.  Still, it's hard to figure out a team that would pursue him. showad();
Baseball America's Top 10 Los Angeles Dodgers Prospects
2007-12-06 19:30:00
With all the rumors the LA Dodgers have been involed in, Baseball America has posted their list of Los Angeles Dodgers Top 10 Prospects.  At the top of the list are two players mentioned in most of the rumors, Clayton kershaw and Andy LaRoche.  The third player is the 2007 Futures Game MVP, Chin-Lung Hu.  He is a player I am surprised hasn't gotten much hype. Between AA and AAA, Hu hit 325/364/507 with little drop in performance in the jump from AA to AAA.  His OBP is dependent on his AVG, but a contact rate of 90.1% mitigates that to an extent.  Maybe the Dodgers hope he remains unasked about given SS Raphael Furcal is a free agent following the 2008 season, but that still doesn't explain his absence in trade rumors. Los Angeles Dodgers Top 10 Prospects Clayton Kershaw, lhp Andy LaRoche, 3b Chin-Lung Hu, ss Scott Elbert, lhp Blake DeWitt, 3b Chris Withrow, rhp James McDonald, rhp Jonathan Meloan, rhp Delwyn Young, of Pedro Baez, 3b

Andruw Jones on a two-year contract? Nice work, Ned. But now you have an expendable outfielder and you’re still looking for a starting pitcher. Hiroki Kuroda Rumors: Wednesday
2007-12-06 00:59:00
UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 5:59pm: Per Scott Lauber, the Phils are out on Kuroda. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 10:46am: Todd Zolecki says Kuroda will visit the D'Backs, Mariners, and Dodgers next week, so it's fair to assume those are three of the four finalists. FROM 12-5-07 at 9:41am: Yesterday morning it was reported that the Mets had reached "Round 2" of the bidding for free agent Hiroki Kuroda.  At that time 8-10 teams were in on him. Now, the Kuroda derby is down to four finalists and the Mets aren't one of them. David Lennon agrees, saying the Mets were "drifting to the back of the pack" for Kuroda. My guess on the four finalists: Mariners, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Royals. showad();
Kuroda Wants Four Years
2007-12-04 20:26:00
Previous reports floating about had the Mariners offering four years, $44MM to Hiroki Kuroda.  Not so, according to MLB.com's Jim Street.  Street says the Mariners, Dodgers, and D'Backs have all made offers in the three-year, $30MM range.  None of the three clubs wants to go to four years on soon-to-be 33 year-old pitcher with no MLB experience. Kuroda may make his decision early next week, after his agents meet with the interested parties. Street adds that the Ms plan to meet with the Orioles today to discuss Erik Bedard possibilities.  Also, he mentions the rumor that the Mariners inquired on Ben Sheets.  Maybe it was both the Dodgers and Mariners. showad();
D'Backs, Dodgers, Royals After Kuroda
2007-11-28 06:30:00
UPDATE, 11-27-07 at 10pm: The D'Backs' offer is rumored to be for three years and $27MM.  The Royals were connected to Kuroda today also, but that rumor surfaced on November 8th.  It was also revealed tonight that the Dodgers sent three people to Tokyo last week to talk to Kuroda, including Takashi Saito. FROM 11-27-07 at 9am: According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks made an offer to free agent Hiroki Kuroda ten days ago.  Piecoro suggests Kuroda could receive $10MM annually for three or four years.  A recent Japanese report indicated it might take four years, $45MM.  The Phillies also have an offer out to Kuroda.  Jim McLennan of AZ Snakepit has some additional info on the Japanese starter. The Mariners are in the lead for Kuroda; they sent a contingent to Japan to speak with him.  Interest is huge - we've got the Rangers, Dodgers, Cubs, Phillies, Tigers, Royals, Mets in the mix as well.  The Cubs might be out no...

Rangers, Hunter Talking Five Year Deal
2007-11-20 16:55:00
According to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan, Torii Hunter denied the Chicago Sun-Times report that he would sign with the Sox this week.  The White Sox, Dodgers, and Rangers remain the major players for Hunter.  The Rangers had dinner with Hunter last night; he's their top priority.  Currently the two sides are talking about a five-year deal but Jon Daniels doesn't expect anything to happen this week. showad();

Rivera Wants Four Years
2007-11-15 18:08:00
Why is that three-year, $45MM offer to Mariano Rivera from the Yankees still on the table?  According to Ken Rosenthal, it's because Rivera wants four guaranteed years.  He's looking at the contracts of Jorge Posada, Billy Wagner, and even Alex Rodriguez in demanding to be paid through his age 41 season.  As I said before, I think it's time for the Yankees to go to Plan B. Rosenthal says the Yanks are still the favorite for Rivera, despite his quote about playing for the Dodgers.  Rivera has apparently told his agents to shop him around, as he's annoyed by Hank Steinbrenner's public comments about his age.  Hank seems to make a lot of public comments that don't seem professional or well thought-out.  showad();
Rangers Rumors: Rogers, Gagne, Hunter
2007-11-14 04:41:00
MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has some new info regarding the Rangers' plans this offseason. Kenny Rogers has already had three separate stints with the Rangers, the last one ending with the cameraman incident. The Rangers would like to bring him back for a fourth tour, if the price is right.  One emailer speculated that the team also wouldn't mind an apology to management for the incident, also.  Sullivan says the Mariners, Phillies, Dodgers, and Mets may also have Rogers on the radar.  Seems like Ned Colletti is letting bygones be bygones with Scott Boras.  UPDATE: Boras reiterated tonight that the Tigers are Rogers' priority.  He seemingly wants one year and $10MM. The Rangers have interest in another Boras client, Eric Gagne.  I think I read this in ESPN Magazine recently - how about re-signing him and flipping him all over again at the '08 deadline? Owner Tom Hicks and GM Jon Daniels had dinner with Torii Hunter tonight.  I heard they had the r...
Dodgers To Seek Pitching Via Trade
2007-11-13 05:15:00
Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times has some insight into Ned Colletti's gameplan this offseason. Colletti still isn't a fan of the free agent market for starting pitchers.  He feels that the Dodgers' best chance of upgrading the rotation is via trade.  Though the Dodgers have been previously linked to Hiroki Kuroda, Colletti seemed unimpressed by the Japanese market.  Trade options might include Erik Bedard, A.J. Burnett, Cliff Lee, Jon Garland, Jose Contreras, Johan Santana, Dan Haren, Joe Blanton, Chris Capuano, and Dave Bush.  Did I miss anyone?  As far as third base, Colletti says the Dodgers haven't decided whether to go after Alex Rodriguez.  He was able to tolerate Scott Boras enough to talk with him briefly last week.  The other options for the Dodgers would be Mike Lowell and Miguel Cabrera.  Giving Andy LaRoche a try wouldn't be a terrible idea. It sounds like the Dodgers really want to sign a center fielder and move Juan Pierre...
Torre: A-Rod to Dodgers?
2007-11-10 15:36:00
The hot stove buzz this morning is Joe Torre's coy remarks about Alex Rodriguez ending up in Dodger blue.  Said Torre, "It's possible.  It's possible.  It's possible."  There are a number of articles, but Dom Amore of the Hartford Courant reminds readers that Torre and A-Rod have been exchanging phone messages. In Amore's article Torre adds that "you've got four or five clubs that figure to be in the sweepstakes."  The Dodgers were on Jon Heyman's list of possible teams.  If the Yankees offer Rodriguez arbitration, which he would decline, and he signs with the Dodgers, the Yankees would not gain a first round pick; however, I'd say the Dodgers and A-Rod make a good deal of sense.  They'd certainly make room for him at 3B or SS.  And Frank McCourt is the kind of owner not afraid to make a big splash. showad(); Posted by Nat Boyle
Cafardo's Latest: Drew, Pettitte, Lincecum
2007-11-04 08:15:00
The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo works his way through all the teams in anticipation of Monday's GM meetings.  Here are some of the rumors we haven't seen much before. The Rays want a defensive-minded shortstop and veteran starter.  Maybe they'll make a play for Cesar Izturis or Omar Vizquel.  A rehab guy like Freddy Garcia or Randy Wolf could be interesting. The Indians are looking for a power bat for left field.  Haven't seen them mentioned with Barry Bonds at all, could that work? Cafardo proposes the idea of the Cubs acquiring J.D. Drew as their OBP-minded right field acquisition.  Drew has a limited no-trade clause allowing him to block two unknown teams.  I imagine the Red Sox would have to eat some salary. Cafardo also speculates that Andy Pettitte could follow Joe Torre to L.A.  Pettitte has previously talked about a Yankees or retirement stance. The idea of the Giants trading Tim Lincecum seemed crazy at first, right?  Cafardo sa...
Dodgers Serious About Andruw Jones
2007-10-30 22:18:00
Bill Shaikin has a small note in today's column: Scott Boras is believed to consider the Dodgers a more serious contender for center fielder Andruw Jones than for Alex Rodriguez. It's not the first time we've seen the Dodgers linked to Jones; David O'Brien suggested it several weeks ago. Ned Colletti, you may recall, wasn't exactly thrilled with Scott Boras a year ago when J.D. Drew unexpectedly opted out.  But it sounded like much of his anger was directed at Drew.  Boras seems to disagree with the notion that Jones should come with a significant price cut this winter.  Before the season he was talking about $20MM annually.  He'd still want at least $15MM per year. The signing could leave the Dodgers with an outfield of Juan Pierre, Jones, Matt Kemp, and Andre Ethier.  One of the last two could be peddled, and the team might have soured on Kemp a bit.  How about Kemp for Miguel Tejada?  showad();

State Of The Dodgers
2007-10-10 23:07:00
The L.A. Daily News' Tony Jackson has a look at the Dodgers' upcoming offseason.  You also might be interested in my recent Needs and Luxuries post on the team.  A summary of Jackson's column: Juan Pierre could be shifted to left field to allow the Dodgers to employ a stronger arm in center field.  It's odd...teams seem to be souring on last winter's signings even when they received exactly what everyone expected (Pierre and Jason Marquis, for example).  It'd be different for the Red Sox to sour on J.D. Drew, he played well below expectations in Year 1.  Anyway, Pierre could be moved to accomodate Matt Kemp (perhaps putting Andre Ethier in right), or the Dodgers could pursue a center fielder.  They've already been connected to Andruw Jones. The Dodgers perceive third base as a big hole, apparently not willing to give Andy LaRoche another look.  Of course we have to mention Alex Rodriguez.  But how about Mike Lowell? The Dodgers will pas...
Los Angeles Dodgers News: Ned's Plan Is Correct
2007-10-07 16:20:00
What we have all seen happen in the NL playoffs tonight proves that Ned Colletti is on the right track by going with the youth movement in LA. Arizona and Colorado are two of the youngest teams in the majors and one of them is going to the World Series this year. Jeff Kent will probably find himself on a team that likes 40 year old 2Bbman....like the Mets. For all the experience the Jeff Kents and Luis Gonzalez's of the world have, neither acted like veterans or leaders late in the season. Gonzo apparently started complaining of lack of playing time instead of acting like a leader, while Kent vented to the press RIGHT AFTER he met the # of ABs requirements for his '08 contract to vest. So, expect Kent to be traded, Gonzo to move on, and Nomar to accept a reduced role as a utility player or be traded. The success of the Rockies and Dbacks may change the way teams manage their top prospects in the very near future....and I see LA following suit in '08.

Well it's what I call an "official possibility" now.  In his ESPN.com chat yesterday afternoon, Jonah Keri of Page 2 confirmed the Johan Santana for Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw rumor that's been generating a lot of buzz here at MLBTR.  Let's discuss, shall we?  Kemp and Kershaw both have 6 years before they reach free agency.  Santana has 1.  There's the obvious red flag right there, Dodgers fans.  But if Los Angeles GM Ned Colletti wants to win now, and he usually does, Santana could be the golden ticket.  I shudder to think of how dominant Santana could be not only in the NL but also in Dodgers Stadium. If you're the Twins, and you know you can't afford Santana, I think this is a no-brainer.   Especially if (big if) you think you have Francisco Liriano returning to form. The question remains:  Is an ace like Johan what the Dodgers need to win?  I'm not so sure.  They're rotation has been solidified by...
Dodgers Willing To Trade Matt Kemp?
2007-09-26 22:07:00
Matt Kemp is an incredibly valuable player.  Some would argue he's worth more than $50MM over the next three seasons of his career, and he'll cost a few million bucks.  Then there's Bill Plaschke, who feels Kemp's power and speed "have been negated by silly at-bats and baserunning mistakes."  By my calculation Kemp would have to make 742 baserunning mistakes per year to negate his .331/.364/.509 line.  Plaschke has insider sources indicating that the Dodgers think their best chance to win would be to trade a very good young player like Kemp for a veteran.  U.S.S. Mariner recently noted just how dangerous the Dodgers' recent brand of "pro-veteran entitlement" can be. The question then becomes: which teams match up for Kemp?  The Dodgers seem to want a veteran position player, and I imagine the guy would have to be under contract for at least two seasons and probably three.  Third base and the outfield corners might be the o...
