Anti-Male Bias at the Los Angeles Times
2008-03-04 01:06:00
The Los Angeles Times article Next speaker enjoys broad support (3/2/08) details the rise of Karen Bass, the incoming leader of the California assembly and the first African American woman to be elected to lead a legislative house in the U.S. The piece was a nice example of the subtle and not-so-subtle societal bias against fathers and fatherhood. The article begins: “Anyone who knew Wilhelmina Bass might understand why her daughter Karen Bass, the Los Angeles Democrat elected Thursday as the next leader of the California Assembly, has devoted her Capitol career to making the state a better parent to its 80,000 foster children. “A former beauty salon owner who raised Karen and three boys in a well-appointed house in the Venice-Fairfax area, Wilhelmina Bass was a kind, poised, contemplative mother, and ‘the notion that people would come into this world and not have loving parents has always caused Karen pain,’ said Sylvia Castillo, Bass’ district directo...

Traffic, weather, gas prices, even movie times -- the SYNC knows all. SYNC, the Ford/Microsoft on-board cleverness system, is now even smarter. As well as being able to link up to iPods and Bluetooth-bearing cell phones, and then obey spoken commands, SYNC’s latest upgrade includes one more bell. Or is it a whistle? In conjunction with Sirius satellite radio, this is a new take on GPS-based navigation, known as Travel Link. It provides real-time traffic information (including speed and flow), five-day weather forecasts as well as current conditions (taking in hurricane and tropical storm tracking, and conditions at ski resorts), and information from 120,000 gas stations, so users can choose by price, distance or brand. The system can then calculate a route to the chosen forecourt. This improved SYNC system will be introduced on the all-new 2009 Lincoln MKS luxury sedan, available this summer. A six-month introductory subscription to Sirius Travel Link will ...

SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: The Los Angeles Times Travel Show was held this past weekend at the Long Beach Convention Center. This was to be my first visit to this event and I was excited to learn what it was all about. The exhibitor list included official tourism offices and boards of many cities, regions and countries , travel agents, a few travel product manufacturers, tour operators and more. It would be a good opportunity to learn what this year's cool destinations are, find some good deals and chat with like minded visitors. I drove into the parking lot of the convention center around noon on Sunday, February 10th and headed towards the entrance. It was a ten minute walk to the main gate. Shuttles were also provided for those that were not in walking mood.

Insincerity And Lies From The Los Angeles Times About Prop 93
2008-01-25 00:34:00
As usual the Los Angeles Times manages to not only come down on the wrong side of an issue but under the guise of "reform" they twist facts to reward the very politicians they are supposedly criticising. In this case it is the Evil Twin Mexican socialists Fabian Nunez (D-Los Angeles) and Don Parata (D-Oakland) that will be rewarded. The Times makes a feeble attempt at hand wringing about how they really do hate to see treacherous politicians like Nunez and Parata rewarded in the attempt to "fix" our states political problems. You see Nunez had promised to attach Redistricting to this bill then backed out of his promise at the last second once he had gotten the endorsements he needed. And the justification they give is straight from the Prop 93 commercial about "increased expertise" of more seasoned politicians. What it really does is give Parata and Nunez an additional few years to rob the state blind before switching to the other side of the House and ...
LA Times: Another editor out for refusing to make budget cuts
2008-01-22 21:46:00
Today I’d hate to be the managing editor of The Los Angeles Times, John M. Arthur, 60, or its innovation editor, Russ Stanton, 49. That’s because rumor has it they’re on the short list to be the next top editor at one of the nation’s finest newspapers. If named, this is what publisher David Hiller will expect of either: Cut The Times’ approximately $120 million budget by 1 percent. That would mean firing people. If either wishes to keep that job, they’d better do it ? because Hiller fired the previous two editors who refused to make cuts he demanded. Hiller told editor James E. O’Shea to make that cut. Hiller instead requested a $3 million increase due to anticipated coverage needs of the China Olympics and the presidential election. Hiller says O’Shea quit; O’Shea says he was fired for that refusal. In 2006, editor Dean Baquet was forced to resign for refusing to make budget cuts demanded by the paper’s owner, Tribune C...

The Los Angeles Times Apologize to Roger Clemens; Jason Grimsley's Document
2007-12-22 17:45:00
The other big news from the week in terms of the world of steroids and the Mitchell Report is that former MLB player Jason Grimsley's documents were unveiled, and there was a surprise -- Roger Clemens' name not mentioned in the affidavit despite being reported by the Los Angeles Times it was.The Los Angeles Times issued a full page apology on Friday, and perhaps this shred of news helps to bolster Clemens' case that he did not use drugs. From the New York Times: The judge who unsealed the Grimsley affidavit had harsh words for The Los Angeles Times, which printed a report in October 2006 headlined "Clemens Is Named in Drug Affidavit." Clemens was not named in the affidavit, although he was named last week by Mitchell. The newspaper had been challenged on the accuracy of its story by the United States attorney in 2006. It had said its report was based on two sources and that its reporter, Lance Pugmire, had seen the affidavit, and the newspaper stood by the report. In fact, the Los ...

A visit to Dracula's castle in Romania
2007-11-22 11:26:00
After touring Suceava and the painted monasteries in Bucovina, I board a bus for the seven-hour ride south to Bucharest. When I take my seat, a friend turns to me and says, "Bucovina is seeing Romania in Technicolor and Bucharest is seeing Romania in black and white." I press play on my iPod and look out the window. Red-tasseled horses draw wooden carts laden with potatoes or watermelons, sharing the road with cars and pedestrians. Haystack mounds march upon grassy fields and disappear over purple hills. Water wells, a symbol of good fortune, dot the roadside. Three carved wooden crosses, as tall as me and enshrined in a glass room not much bigger, give thanks for crops, water and good harvests. Three small crosses top its blue-porcelain-tiled roof. Peonies, roses and marguerite daisies bloom around the foot of the shrine and cascade over a white picket fence in shades of orange, purple and yellow. A wrought-iron cross stands in front of the fence, staked in the grass. An ivy wreath...
