Ford losses 8.7 Billion - and accelerates transformation plans
2008-07-24 16:05:00
Ford announced an enormous loss today for the 2nd quarter. The loss was larger than expected at $8.7B. Ford also announced that it is accelerating the move to small cars by stating that a total of 6 small vehicles form Europe would be manufactured in the Americas for our market. Only 3 of the vehicles were named: Fiesta, Focus, and Transit and these three had already all been announced. Two of the remaining three will probably be crossovers, and the third is speculated to be the Mondeo. However, the Mondeo overlaps with the Fusion - so how Ford will work this out remains to be seen. An updated Fusion will also come out next year, with enhanced engines and a hybrid powerplant for the first time. Past examples of European Fords brought to North America were all de-contented from their European counterparts. The European Mondeo for example, was an up-market product in Europe but was de-contented for North America as the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique. Now that small cars are impor...

Just a week after it announced cuts on its domestic and trans-Tasman services, the Australian carrier has cut capacity on its Japan and South-east Asia routes, including some services launched barely a year ago. Retirement Plan Losses May Be Able To Be Recovered Posted By : Katie Kelley

Planning for the future and especially for retirement can be a daunting task in and of itself. However, individuals often seek the help of investors who specialize in pension plans and knowing the law can often be a saving grace for many. That is until recently, as the rash of unethical practices of stockbrockers, investors and corporations has reached an all-time high. Schwab YieldPlus Losses

In a decline that has been described as ?one of the more spectacular meltdowns in mutual fund history? by this San Francisco Chronicle article, the Schwab YieldPlus fund has declined by over 25% this year.  The Schwab Yield Plus fund was supposed to be an ultra short term bond fund which was a ?smart alternative for your cash,? but investors who expected the safety of a money market fund have suffered significant damages.  As shown by this Morningstar report, the fund invested almost 50% of its assets in mortgage related securities. Investors who invested in the Schwab YieldPlus fund expecting a cash or money market alternative and subsequently lost a portion of their savings should contact an attorney to discuss their legal options.  Greco & Greco is a law firm experienced in filing arbitration claims against brokerage firms based on misrepresentations, omissions, securities fraud, and other wrongful conduct.

Meralco, whose acronym came from Manila Electric Railroad And Light Company, and later changed to Manila Electric Company, has been railroading its consumers to pay a high electricity bills. It had transmuted from the Lopez clan to NAPOCOR and back to the Lopez family after the EDZA Revolution. The Lopez reacquired only the controlling ownership and its aging power generating plant such as Rockwell and Tegen power plant stations and substation facilities were retained to NAPOCOR. CNN Money: Florida Cities Still Set for Steep Losses

CNN Money put out an article titled “10 markets set for steep losses” and topping the list, Florida cities like Miami and Orlando.  The list breaks down their forecast for continued losses in the housing market and a forecast for the bottom. While I don’t put much weight into their analysis, it is interesting to see what the are saying, at least worth sharing, in my opinion.  Here is the breakdown of which Florida cities made the top 10 list and their respective forecasts… 1.  Miami, FL:  12-month forecast is for prices to drop another 24.9%, having only fallen 9.8% over the last year.  The bottom is expected to be in the Spring of 2010.  The median home is currently $329,000.  The change in foreclosure rate is forecast at 370%. 2.  Ft. Lauderdale, FL:  12-month forecast is for prices to drop 22.2%, after a drop of 17% over the last year.  Spring of 2010 is also expected to be the bottom.  Median home pr...

The T-38 Losses and Supporting Our Military Families
2008-05-02 15:29:00
I have been watching and reading the news about the two recent T-38 crashes in which 4 aircrew have been killed in a week and having flown that plane for several years I can really empathize. Our prayers and thoughts for the families of the crews reflect the same concerns and feelings for our sad losses in Iraq and Afghanistan. The pain is real and we all feel it in some way. I can remember when my father went out to the Sheppard AFB Runway Supervisory Unit at the end of the runway to watch me do some takeoff and landings. I felt a lot of pride and then a short time later a family doing the same thing watched their son's plane crash in front of them. What a loss and what pain! Why do we do these things that put us at risk? Psychologists have a great time trying to figure that out. A very high percentage of military personnel have a deep confidence in their own abilities and do not believe bad things will happen to them. We do our own self assessment and risk management (whethe...

3G Apple iPhone creates losses on unsold O2 & T-Mobile stock
2008-04-22 12:04:00
With the 3G Apple iPhone expected this June we are hearing that the next version of the iPhone is creating losses on unsold O2 and T-Mobile stock, the cell phone companies significantly overestimated how many of the first-gen phones would sell in Europe. Those mobile operators may have had the exclusive contracts but this may also cause a big loss in the pocket if they have really over-ordered on a big scale and the question is will they keep these exclusive contracts on the 3G versions. The “significant” losses on the early model iPhones may not be as bad according to Kathryn Huberty, an analyst at Morgan Stanley. Huberty said that some of the losses might be recouped from the monthly revenue they get from customers who bought the first devices. Now the phone users who brought the first-gen iPhones like myself will have to have a device that will lack not only in 3G but also many other improvements (better camera, bigger hard drive, faster etc). You would think we would...
Minimizing Trading Losses: Two Overnight Trades That Didn’t Go So Well
2008-04-19 15:46:00
From a few days ago, just hadn’t gotten around to writing about it…as I mentioned HERE, I shorted 2,000 (KOG) at $2.75 near the market close when it cracked sideways price action so I thought it’d go negative on the day—I was right that it did go red, but I didn’t take my 10 cents/share gains cuz I wanted a big drop—not a pesky $180 profit. Unfortunately, I had a flight to catch the next morning… Took a later flight to watch the market open—wasn’t comfortable at all since it opened above the sideways price action crack of $2.80, covered at $2.82, a $160 loss including commissions. Screw that, played I safe…I can take $160 losses all day long. Later in the day, it went decently red down to the $2.60 area, so I wasted $400, but when I play volatile stocks, I don’t worry about predicting every 10-20 cent move—I take my 20-50 cents-$1/share gains thinking stocks will make much larger swings (so I won’t have to be perfect in my timing) (such as THIS tra...

Despite Writedowns and Loan Losses, Core Banking Businesses Remain Very Pro
2008-04-14 18:24:00
Since earnings season gets underway in full force this week, the headlines are going to look bad for the financial services industry as loan losses and asset writedowns lead to severe first quarter losses. However, investors need to focus on where these losses are coming from and how the core banking business is holding up during this mess.I bring this up because the media would have you believe that the banking business is broken and loan defaults by consumers on their mortgages, credit cards, car loans, and student loans are crippling the banks. Interestingly, that is simply not the case.Consider the first quarter earnings report from Wachovia (WB) issued this morning. The company reported revenue of $7.9 billion and a loss of more than $300 million, or $0.20 per share. That sounds bad, and it is, but digging deeper into the company's income statement reveals that more than 90% of WB's business remains extremely profitable, as you can see from the numbers below. Why is this impor...
