Lou Piniella settles on Chicago Cubs? opening lineup, Kosuke Fukudome stays
2008-03-22 21:57:00 So much for tinkering with the batting order. Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Saturday that Kosuke Fukudome will bat fifth, Alfonso Soriano will remain in the second spot and, barring a trade, the opening day lineup is set. Those comments came a day after the manager said he might try batting the struggling Fukudome ...

Lou Piniella Is Getting Scruffy
2007-09-10 08:02:00 With the Cubs in the thick of a playoff race, nothing is escaping the attention of their fans. Even Lou Piniella’s Brett Favre-like stubble is causing a stir. This weekend Piniella was finally forced to address his whiskers and he wants everyone to know he’s not growing a beard. “There’s nothing to read into this thing. Believe me. Absolutely nothing. I can’t remember the last time I shaved. But I don’t like beards, so I’m not going into a beard…this will come off — it’s just a matter of when. I’d rather go to a barber shop or go to somebody who could just shave me. I like that. Nice and relaxing — it’s a face massage.” Looks like we can close the book on the Piniella beard mystery. Now Cubs fans can go back to important things like figuring out to sneak weight loss pills into Carlos Zambrano’s food.

Learn Your Lesson
2007-08-05 22:35:00 Mr. Clutch has already written about the folly of attributing the Cubs' recent success to Lou Piniella's petulant rage. It has come to my attention, however, that certain professional sportswriters have (inexplicably) failed to "get the memo." How a six-time "US Sportswriter of the Year" could have missed one of BTL's official communiques is beyond me, but whatever CNNSI veteran Frank Deford's excuse might be, a stern talking-to is definitely in the offing. Oh, woe is sport. The summer of our disgrace, the month the fun went out of fun and games. Has ever sports been so unhappy?Frank Deford could also use a little refresher on subject-verb agreement. Treating "sports" as a singular noun is apparently acceptable, if incredibly awkward. But how can "sport" and "sports" both be singular? I'm not letting Frank Deford get away with writing "woe is sport" and following it up two sentences later with "has ever sports." Not on my watch, Frank. A referee accused of fixing NBA games. One...
And All It Took Was One Tantrum...
2007-07-24 18:47:00 As the Cubs continue their speedy rise towards the top of the NL Central, and are now contending with the Brewers, theories as to their sudden spurt are arising everywhere. Of course, those of us ?in the know? are not surprised. The Cubs had been underperforming their run differential for a long time, and those who knew this also knew that it was likely that they would eventually play well again. Those who didn?t know this, however, have taken to theorizing about the galvanizing effect of Lou Piniella?s ejection a month or so ago. Jeff Passan, over at Yahoo! Sports is one of these people, as is Alfonso Soriano, so let?s hear their feelings on the topic."The biggest thing to me is when Lou got kicked out of the game," said outfielder Alfonso Soriano, whose story begins with the events of June 2.That was the biggest thing to Soriano. Not his own enhanced performance, nor the rebound of Carlos Zambrano from mediocrity, nor a number of improvements on the part of the players. Of course,...

Giants Talk With Lou Piniella
2006-12-02 15:23:06 ESPN reported Tuesday that the Giants have had preliminary discussions with Lou Piniella about their managerial opening. Pinella was supposedly the front runner to take the New York Yankee job if it became available, but Joe Torre reported Tuesday that he'll be back with the Yankees next year. Now that the Yankees are out of the mix, it appears that the Giants, Cubs and Rangers are the 3 most likely destinations for Pinella. Pinella was interviewed Monday about all the possibilities, and he surprisingly had the most to say about the Giants. Pinella mentioned how much he likes the city of San Francisco and also said that he and GM Brian Sabean are very close friends. If the Giants did hire Pinella, it would give Brian Sabean a manager who he would actually be on speaking terms with. It wasn't a secret that Felipe Alou and Brian Sabean, while they did respect each other and got along okay, weren't friends. That being said, I also think that if the Giants did hire Piniella, they wou... |
