Farewell and Thank-You Lou Piniella
2010-08-22 19:24:00
As we end the Lou Piniella era today, let me say how grateful I am to have spent 4 seasons around one of the great managers in Major League history.  Lou is a brilliant tactician, lives and breathes baseball 24 hours a day and can hold court in his office with the best of them. I really appreciate his willingness to listen and to solicit outside opinions.  I've long said the smartest people I know are great listeners and he is in that group.  I can't think of one visit to his office before a game during which he didn't ask my opinion or Bob's opinion about the ballclub.  And when he asked, he wanted our honest opinion.  He...

Dusty Baker: A Better Cub Coach Than Lou Piniella
2010-07-22 17:58:00
Dusty Baker was a better Cub coach than Lou Piniella. When it comes right down to it, Lou made us all believe in the regular season but Dusty atucally gave us, albeit breif, hope in the playoffs- which was something very special for a Cub fan to feel.
Lou Piniella retires; recounts fabulous afternoon at Ponderosa
2010-07-21 09:03:00
"I usually go in there at about 3 p.m. Park the car. Walk through the front door. I'll pay for the buffet-You pay for the buffet right there. You just grab the tray...and that's what they do at the Ponderosa...they let you grab the tray and pay at the same time...and I just grab myself a chocolate milk, right off the bat...chocolate milk makes me feel like I'm back in grade school...really smooth taste...Well, after that, I should go to the salad line (insert Lou laugh) heh. Heh. Heh. Heh. You know...heh. Heh. Heh. But, I wind up heading right for that pasta line. I'll be honest, I grab just about everything. Stuffing. Really moist stuffing. Then I'm gonna go with turkey, gravy, cranberry...just a regular thanksgiving feast. My seconds usually include a breakfast arr-arr-arr-array, if you will. Some eggs, bacon, sausages...I like their pancakes, too-I'll be honest. I eat a lot. And, as a matter of fact, I'm usually smuggling in some wine, too. Heh, heh, heh. Well, what do you...
Lou Piniella and the Curse of the Hairless Lip
2010-07-20 22:40:00
So, it looks like Lou Piniella has finally decided that the burden of being the Cubs skipper was more than he cared to carry anymore and is retiring at the end of the year.  As a long-time fan of the 'beloved Cubbies', this geek is sorry to see him go.  But if you ask me, it was inevitable.See, there's a reason that "Sweet Lou" couldn't get that woe-begotten squad of overpaid "baseball players" (be sure to use 'air quotes' there) past the first round of the playoffs.  And it had nothing to do with the lack of a potent left-handed batter in the line-up.And it's funny that it took your truly, a nerd with OCD and an obsessive need to...
Lou Piniella Rants About Chicago Media And Puts Foot In Mouth....
2010-06-11 21:19:00
As I wrapped up my Blackhawks celebration day watching the parade from a comfy air-conditioned apartment on the north side of town, I got word that Lou Piniella got a little testy with the assembled media this morning.  In his morning press conference, Lou went on a solid two minute rant about being "nitpicked" about his decisions as a manager by the same media he was spewing his rant to.  Lou...Lou....Lou....I think your rant is as lost as your managing style sometimes.  Here's why ...
Dusty Baker v. Lou Piniella: Who will win?
2010-03-13 23:33:00
Heading into the fourth season under a manager, Uncle Lou, that I have waning trust in, I have found myself reminiscing about heading into the fourth season under Dusty Baker in 2006. Although Lou's record is obviously the better of the two, to this point Dusty brought the team closer to a World Series than they have been since 1945. What does Lou have to do with the Cubs this year to distinguish himself as either better or worse than Dusty? On this, I offer you a little help...
If Lou Piniella Tweeted
2010-02-26 17:20:00
So after Cubs skipper Lou Piniella said he's not a big "Facebook or Twitter guy", you know you were left wondering what he would tweet if he did end up joining Twitter. Wonder no more. The Mob brings you some of the best Lou Piniella tweets."Thinking about soup. Dempster looks good.""Raring to go today. Fresh out of Sanka so I had to drink regular. Might be a bit late.""Darn VCR is on the blink. Clock keeps flashing 12:00. Guess it'll be right twice a day!""Boy, the only thing more foul than Ozzie's mouth is the toilet after Zambrano's done in there.""Pleasure to have Lifetime Movie Channel here in Arizona. Love that Meredith Baxter.""Boy, this new hitting coach is something...
Throwback Hottie: Sweet Lou Piniella
2010-01-25 21:03:00
So Saturday I'm flipping through the channels, looking for something sportsy to watch, when I happened upon ESPN Classic showing a 1983 game between the Royals and the Yankees,  otherwise know as "The George Brett Pine Tar Game." While I'm always up for a good freak out from George Brett, what intrigued me far more about the game was the fact that the Cubs' very own Lou Piniell was playing. You wouldn't know it now, but Lou used to be seriously dishy back in his younger days. Check him out:...
Lou Piniella Gets a Warning for Jaywalking In San Diego
2009-08-19 05:14:00
Cubs manager Lou Piniella was stopped by San Diego police today when he was warned about jaywalking while talking on his cell phone. Piniella was looking for a place to get a haircut and was warned about crossing on a red light. He becomes the 2nd Chicago baseball executive to be stopped by police regarding jaywalking in the last 8 days. White Sox GM Kenny Williams was fined $56.00 after receiving a jaywalking citation in Seattle while on his cell phone....
Put This One Squarely on Lou Piniella
2009-08-18 06:59:00
Don't blame Cubs closer Kevin Gregg for tonight's brutal loss instead blame Cubs manager Lou Piniella who should never have used him in the 9th inning of a 1-0 game. How many times must someone watch the same movie over and over and see the same ending before they finally wake up and realize that the ending will not change.Tonight, Kevin Gregg gave up a game tying double with two outs in the 9th that let the Padres tie the game and then after an intentional walk he gave up his 12th home run of the season, blew his 6th save of the season and cost the Cubs another game in the standings to the St. Louis Cardinals who won...

Lou Piniella settles on Chicago Cubs? opening lineup, Kosuke Fukudome stays
2008-03-22 21:57:00
So much for tinkering with the batting order. Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Saturday that Kosuke Fukudome will bat fifth, Alfonso Soriano will remain in the second spot and, barring a trade, the opening day lineup is set. Those comments came a day after the manager said he might try batting the struggling Fukudome ...

Lou Piniella Is Getting Scruffy
2007-09-10 08:02:00
With the Cubs in the thick of a playoff race, nothing is escaping the attention of their fans. Even Lou Piniella’s Brett Favre-like stubble is causing a stir. This weekend Piniella was finally forced to address his whiskers and he wants everyone to know he’s not growing a beard. “There’s nothing to read into this thing. Believe me. Absolutely nothing. I can’t remember the last time I shaved. But I don’t like beards, so I’m not going into a beard…this will come off — it’s just a matter of when. I’d rather go to a barber shop or go to somebody who could just shave me. I like that. Nice and relaxing — it’s a face massage.” Looks like we can close the book on the Piniella beard mystery. Now Cubs fans can go back to important things like figuring out to sneak weight loss pills into Carlos Zambrano’s food.
Learn Your Lesson

Mr. Clutch has already written about the folly of attributing the Cubs' recent success to Lou Piniella's petulant rage. It has come to my attention, however, that certain professional sportswriters have (inexplicably) failed to "get the memo." How a six-time "US Sportswriter of the Year" could have missed one of BTL's official communiques is beyond me, but whatever CNNSI veteran Frank Deford's excuse might be, a stern talking-to is definitely in the offing. Oh, woe is sport. The summer of our disgrace, the month the fun went out of fun and games. Has ever sports been so unhappy?Frank Deford could also use a little refresher on subject-verb agreement. Treating "sports" as a singular noun is apparently acceptable, if incredibly awkward. But how can "sport" and "sports" both be singular? I'm not letting Frank Deford get away with writing "woe is sport" and following it up two sentences later with "has ever sports." Not on my watch, Frank. A referee accused of fixing NBA games. One...
And All It Took Was One Tantrum...

As the Cubs continue their speedy rise towards the top of the NL Central, and are now contending with the Brewers, theories as to their sudden spurt are arising everywhere. Of course, those of us ?in the know? are not surprised. The Cubs had been underperforming their run differential for a long time, and those who knew this also knew that it was likely that they would eventually play well again. Those who didn?t know this, however, have taken to theorizing about the galvanizing effect of Lou Piniella?s ejection a month or so ago. Jeff Passan, over at Yahoo! Sports is one of these people, as is Alfonso Soriano, so let?s hear their feelings on the topic."The biggest thing to me is when Lou got kicked out of the game," said outfielder Alfonso Soriano, whose story begins with the events of June 2.That was the biggest thing to Soriano. Not his own enhanced performance, nor the rebound of Carlos Zambrano from mediocrity, nor a number of improvements on the part of the players. Of course,...

Giants Talk With Lou Piniella
2006-12-02 15:23:06
ESPN reported Tuesday that the Giants have had preliminary discussions with Lou Piniella about their managerial opening. Pinella was supposedly the front runner to take the New York Yankee job if it became available, but Joe Torre reported Tuesday that he'll be back with the Yankees next year. Now that the Yankees are out of the mix, it appears that the Giants, Cubs and Rangers are the 3 most likely destinations for Pinella. Pinella was interviewed Monday about all the possibilities, and he surprisingly had the most to say about the Giants. Pinella mentioned how much he likes the city of San Francisco and also said that he and GM Brian Sabean are very close friends. If the Giants did hire Pinella, it would give Brian Sabean a manager who he would actually be on speaking terms with. It wasn't a secret that Felipe Alou and Brian Sabean, while they did respect each other and got along okay, weren't friends. That being said, I also think that if the Giants did hire Piniella, they wou...
