Louisiana Committee Approves Repeal Of Helmet Law
2008-05-06 19:28:00
L ouisiana should get rid of a law requiring adult motorcycle riders to wear helmets, a House committee voted on Tuesday. The House Transportation Committee's approval moves the bill by Rep. Mert Smiley, R-Port Vincent, to the House floor. Smiley's bill would require bikers under age 18 to wear helmets, but not adults. Smiley and others argue that helmets can contribute to crashes, by limiting bikers' vision. Louisiana is one of 20 states that require all motorcyclists to wear a helmet, a statute that safety activists say saves lives in accidents. The measure moved forward despite opposition from James Champagne, former head of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, who mocked Smiley's position as "tantamount to believing in the tooth fairy." "If you get into a crash, that helmet may be the one thing that saves your life or saves you from a serious injury," Champagne said. Champagne was removed earlier this y...

LA-6 Special Election
2008-05-05 02:17:00
In a stunning victory, Democrat Don Cazayoux defeated Republican Woody Jenkins to replace retired Republican Congressman Richard Baker. Cazayoux won the district 49% to 46%, this despite Republican ads, which tried to tie Cazayoux with Nancy Pelosi, Obama and Rev. Wright. If anything, this Republican defeat is a sure sign of things to come this November. The 6th Congressional district has remained Republican since 1975 with about a 7% lean Republican.

Domestic Elder Abuse in Louisiana: The Case of August Baxter
2008-05-01 13:30:00
Ray,Could I post something about my late father's abuse? -Eric C. BaxterMy late father, August Baxter, was an elderly and disabled man when, as his wife lay dying, his home was invaded by interlopers who appointed themselves to be his "caregivers". He was coerced into signing legal instruments he could not read and which were artfully designed to imprison him and rob him of his assets. His body was ultimately found in the lake behind his home, just days before a legal resolution seemed at hand. The manner of his death was classified as "undetermined", but his apparent drowning in two feet of water resulted from negligence, violence or the application of psychological abuse.Throughout his long ordeal, family members reporting his exploitation, urgently warning of his endangerment and attempting to arrange the legal assistance he requested were subjected to acts of official reprisal and intimidation. State law defines elder abuse and criminalizes any failure to report it; it does not...

McCain Tours Louisiana Wasteland, Vows to Learn Lessons of the Past
2008-04-25 01:31:00
John McCain went to New Orleans today, or as the natives call it, “Nawlins.” He walked around and looked at piles of junk and empty houses and then more piles of junk, and then said next time the federal government would be far more efficient in solving everyone’s problems: The presumptive Republican presidential nominee toured a residential street in the neighborhood with his wife, Cindy McCain, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, also a Republican, before addressing about 50 activists, journalists and Katrina survivors in front of a local church. He also attended a town hall meeting at Xavier University, a predominately African-American institution in New Orleans. “Never again will we experience such mishandling of natural disasters and the suffering that ensues from it,” McCain said. “There are so many lessons that are learned and need to be learned.” Lessons, huh? You say there are lessons to be learned? OK, let’s start with the l...
HUD Charges Louisiana Couple With Housing Discrimination
2008-04-24 00:00:00
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development today announced it is charging a Louisiana couple with racial discrimination in connection with the sale of a privately owned townhome. HUD claims Reggie and Kimberly Collier complained to a local real estate firm showing the home and threatened to deny the new owners utilities after they observed an African-American woman viewing the property. The African-American woman was, in fact, a sales agent representing prospective homebuyers who were white.

Louisiana Senate Passes a Bill that Allows Sex Offenders to be Castrated
2008-04-16 18:00:00
I admit, I had to do a double take on the headline of this story when I was scanning my Google Reader, but there it was, “La. Senate Passes Sex Offender Castration Bill“: BATON ROUGE, La. ? The most serious sex crimes should be punishable by castration, with drugs or surgery, the Louisiana Senate voted on Tuesday. The bill by Sen. Nick Gautreaux, D-Meaux, would give judges the option of imposing chemical castration on those convicted of sex crimes including aggravated rape, simple rape and indecent behavior with a juvenile. Chemical castration would be mandatory on second offenses, and the offender would have the option of choosing physical castration instead. Senators voted 32-3 to send the measure to the House. Chemical castration is where the convicted takes a drug that reduces his sexual urges, or is supposed to anyway. The drug can be countered with another drug, but the bill says the offender can’t take it, so there’s no chance of that happening. The ...
